1. Is Ash still alive?
Yes - Ash is alive and making fantastic progress. We've recently posted update videos on him showing how well he is doing. Please search "Update on Tiny Orphaned Howler Monkey Ash". It was uploaded on 18th June. We are unable to link directly to this video within the comments. This howler monkey arrived at our center after his mother was electrocuted by uninsulated power cables.
2. Is the mother dead?
Yes, sadly the other monkey in this video is dead. This is the mother of Ash, the baby howler monkey. He was clinging onto her back at the time of electrocution.
3. How was the mother electrocuted?
Uninsulated power cables. One of the biggest threats to wildlife in Costa Rica. Wildlife mistake these cables for tree branches, often with fatal consequences.
4. Are the cables being insulated?
Over the last few years with our Stop the Shocks programme, we have been working local authorities and electricity companies to log and monitor certain hotspots which required insulation.
100s of areas have been made safe, but there’s still a long way to go. So we have been developing strategies to mitigate the risk from unsafe electrical apparatus (cables, transformers, etc.); but despite the awful impact on wildlife, there has been no direct legal mandate from the Costa Rican government to address the issue. We will be on top of raising more awareness to this.

But wow, that uninsulated power line situation does sound awful. I can only imagine how bad it would be for anyone.
I do feel sorry for the baby. Being orphaned so young in life, on top of those burns, will be a traumatic experience. I know a lot of non human primates that were maternally deprived before they were weaned do develop some nasty psychological issues.
I just hope he gets the care he needs and maybe gets put a foster mother in a similar way to the Vervet sanctuary.

И такое у многих животных. А тут я за птицами аистами наблюдаю несколько месяцев, так они не то что слабого птенца выкидывают с гнезда, а вполне здорового, но самого подвижного, наверное потому что их много. Я не знаю почему, но животный мир тоже жесток

Who help "cute" animals?
As opposed to other animals that aren't as conventionally considered "cute"? Should people/do you only value animals you view as "cute", and only think they're worth saving?
If you saw an injured/sick)dying rattlesnake, eel, goblin shark, pipistrelle bat, tarantula etc would you not commend peoples caring for it/not care about/value/have empathy for it's pain and life as much as you would with a "cute" animal???

It's so sad
It's very hard but remember, this is a rescue meaning ALL their animals come from sad predicaments. It comes with the job and you can imagine how hard it is on the workers themselves to witness such sorrow BUT one can not ignore the positive side. Had this rescue not stepped in, that baby would have starved or been eaten by predators. Very sad for the momma but that baby is truly lucky to be in such trustworthy hands after such a loss.
Keep in mind that life is tough. Especially nature. Not everything is puppies and flowers. Sometimes we need a dose of reality. Look at the positive. The baby was saved.

Да уж...несколько раз спасала обезьян, после удара током. Как только упала, нужно срочно хлестать ее тонким притоком по всему телу. Часто приходит в себя. А один раз пришлось к доктору ехать. Сделали адреналин, ожила, держали 3 дня в комнате, все перевернула и закакала. Но, за то жива осталась. Живу на шри ланке.

Did the baby also get a electrical shock or did the baby find their mommy like this and is holding onto her for safety reasons not realizing that the mommy is dead!
Typically, a baby would stay clinging onto her mother's back at the moment of electrocution. Many of them also receive severe and fatal burns. Ash (the monkey in this video) is VERY lucky!

@@thecelticcrone7927 Of course. Sadly it's as a result of uninusulated power cables and transformers. Due to urban development, there are less natural crossings for the howlers, and their habitat is encroached upon. They mistake the cable for branches, but require them to travel, and sadly get electrocuted.

They probably saved them that way, and keeping baby calm and weren't exactly sure til they got then in their hands what condition momma was in.
We completely understand that this scene is disturbing and shocking, and we did contemplate whether to show this to the public or not. However, it appears to be the only effective way to raise awareness. This scene is a pretty standard day for us, unfortunately.
