After playing a similar game on armor games, back in the day, it seems like having the ability to choose which units leave the trench for an assault would be helpful. For example if you have riflemen, snipers, and machine gunners but only want to send the riflemen to attack, having a way to do that would be great.

Maybe add supply lines between trenches. Units would have their own supply meter that slowly got drained. So having too many in a forward trench without sufficiently upgraded supply between your trenches for too long could hurt them. And give them the option to pull back to another trench. Then you could force your opponent to pull troops back by striking supply lines with artillery. This way, high value units like tanks or snipers could be balanced by making them drain lots of supply.
You could also add options to deploy mines, or try and tunnel underneath no man's land to plant explosives under a trench which could lead to underground fighting.
Units should have Morale. Seeing people around your dying or routing should give a chance of routing as well.
Finally, units should spawn in small squads like they did in the original 1917 game. And shotgunners ought to have an upgrade that gives them grenades. So upgrades would never be stat boosts. They ought to be qualitative in a way that gives your soldiers more options.

Supply lines sound nice, but i think thats too clunky for this style of game. The potential for having a supply system,
where you invest money into being able to field more units at a time could work out though. But i think simply high cost is balance enough for tanks and snipers.
Deploying mines and the potential for tunnels is a good idea. The mines would have to be neutral, but have only a 10% chance of detonating on your forces (90% on enemy) for balance reasons (deadly defence makes pushing harder). Tunnels can be between trenches, speed up movement, but cost additonal money to rig to detonate in case the enemy pushes into your tunneled trench, and would assault you with your own tunnel.
Morale as maybe a full battle modifier i can see working, but for a WW1 game having charging troops break just isn't immersive. Those guys had to choose between probable death ahead and certain death and disgrace behind.
I think non squading is better. Differentiates it nicely. Balanced by cheaper costs/stronger dudes.
I agree with shotgunners having nades, but simple stat boost upgrades can actually be pretty dynamic if implemented correctly.

I've always liked the concept of individual units leveling up as they get more experience, so maybe instead of adding a bunch of types of officers, you could have them select a perk when they level up.
Also, in an effort to balance the snipers more, you should have them be less effective against higher level trenches. The higher the level, the more they miss.

I think a cool feature would be to have the ability to hide your units in a trench so they can't get hit by snipers. This of course would have a few downsides:
    1. New units coming into the trench would be very vulnerable to snipers since they would be immediately targeted by them.
    2. The units in the trench would have delayed reactions to attack orders and couldn't fire back if the trench was getting attacked.
    3. You could only use the ability on upgraded trenches that had officers in them.
Just a few ideas I had off the top of my head while watching.

    A random unit idea: Engineers
These Units are needed to upgrade trenches. The more in a trench means it upgrades faster, rather than instant. Perhaps even some special upgrades for trenches? Mortar emplacements, machine-gun nests, barbed wire (to slow down a bayonet charge perhaps?). They could also maybe lay some sort of AT mines in no man’s land.

3 ideas, you can make special upgrades to trenches, for example an upgrade to defend against artillery, some dummies that have changes attract snipers attention ect. You can add different AI's
One that rushes you from beggining, one that invests in defences, one that plays heavily with artillery ect. You can also use these to make campaing mode more interesting, like a buffed AI constantly attacking you and you have to defend your base for 10 minutes, you can add multiple attachments to the main base, such as anti tank mines on front, upgradeable machine gun and some barriers on front.

    • @carrott36
      @carrott36 2 года назад +1

you can make dugouts to beat arty, dummies to beat snipers, and board the trenches up to beat mines where sapper units are able to tunnel under trenches (but it takes a lot of time) and plant explosives, destroying the trench. Boarded up trenches would just become regular trenches, and also they may be more resistant to tanks rolling over them.

  • @Stealth_Legendary
    @Stealth_Legendary 2 года назад +37

I absolutely love it! Here’s an idea: a sandbox mode where you could trenches, put down barbed wires, mines, etc. along with being able to create mini bunkers. For preset battles, have your units be able to retreat to a trench behind them. Another idea, different terrain: Snipers for example would be more effective on a hill than on flat land. And the movement speed of troops in general would be lower in mud than that on dry dirt.

  • @Qwerty-co4vq
    @Qwerty-co4vq 2 года назад +4

The main ideas that popped to mind was a retreat function where you could select what and how many units go back to the previous trench if your position isn’t advantageous, maybe overkill but sabotaging trenches upon retreat? And the other thing that came to mind was that when pushing snipers stayed behind if I’m not mistaken to help snipe gunners etc so maybe it wouldn’t be far fetched to implement that, or alternatively give an option for what and how many troops can push to add variety and maybe damage the defences whilst keeping the main unit behind. That is all, looks great so far!!!

I'm not much of an expert on mechanics, but some lore on the war you're fighting (probably featuring in the campaign) would be quite cool, themed around the political and technological state of the time of WW1. Some planes or blimps, which were used would also be interesting.

This game is looking great so far!
Here are a few of my ideas for new units/features:
Medics, who can bring units back from the dead
Flamethrowers(I think it's pretty obvious what they'd do)
Grenadiers, who couldn't really defend your trenches but would throw grenades into enemy trenches
Maybe some kind of health system for units? If a health system is added, maybe the medic could regenerate health of other units instead of reviving them.
Upgrading units. You could upgrade a class of unit, like all your riflemen or officers, for example. Upgrades could be things like higher damage or health, faster firing, better accuracy for snipers, etc. Maybe this could tie in to that veteran system you mentioned.
Finally, panzerfaust units, which would be pretty much useless against infantry but strong against tanks.

    2) Maybe the soldiers could flee the battle when you are losing a charge
3)Maybe you could put obstacles like barbed wire to reinforce your trenches
    4) You could also make a historical campaign
    5) When you’re in a trench you should have a defence buff versus when you are charging

  • @aleczhang6132
    @aleczhang6132 2 года назад +46

    My ideas:
Making it so that you have to destroy the enemy base is more fair, because if you just get early rushed it's just not fun. I think that having a option to retreat from a trench would be good because you won't want your units to die cause of a ton of snipers.
I think anti air weapons and mortars would make it more fair for both sides too.
Units: Units on different sides should have bonuses, like the Germans have more damage and fast fire rate but have less health, and the other side can have better accuracy and more health. You can make it so that different units have different weapons, like germans having flamethrowers and other side have poison gas or something.
You should also have melee units since trench battles have units with maces and knifes. You can also add upgrades, like a unit with machine guns can have a rage buff or something. I also think it would be more fun to have like air battles with planes or underwater maps to make the game more enjoyable.
You can also have units make mini trenches or sandbags so there will be different strats. I think units making mounted machine guns or anti air weapons would be nice. After you take that trench all the weapons the enemy made will be yours.
Different game modes can include capture the flag, nighttime, (hard to see) or a sandbox mode.
Balancing is fine, but make it so that snipers aren''t op and you have to upgrade them so they can shoot over.

Nice game. Couple of ideas to add to your list.
    Regards to Base:
Give the base a high defence/HP bar that needs to be overcome before it can be taken over
make it so that it can be upgraded: more HP, more un-moveable defence, produce income faster
    Other units:
A non combatant "Media crew" unit. They are part of the propaganda machine that record what happens in the next charge/defence. If you "win" the charge/defence then you get increased production for a limited time.
Medic - units killed in a charge/defence has a baseline percentage chance to be "injured". Medics can patch them up at the base at set intervals so the unit can be automatically deployed back at the base at no charge. Intervals decrease as more medics are available in the base.
Decoy - add a unit specifically used to distract the sniper with dummies.
Engineer: deploys landmines at slow interval to between current and previous trench you control while defending. takes out 1 enemy mine while charging (helps reinforce your line, doesn't really help at charging).
Additional resource/factor to take into account:
Morale: High moral = damage and HP buff to unit. Low moral is a damage debuff and if really low desertion of units -> opens up to morale mechanics and units
Actual Resources: think rts game called stronghold. You need to manufacture the weapon/resource before you can deploy the unit

-Add a line of barbwire near the last trench that would take some time to destroy. This would prevent early on rushes and easy wins.
-Add an already spawned squad of riflemen and an officer at the last trench that you cant move/command. A last bastion in case of an emergency, prevents early rushes and easy wins.
    - Add an already spawned barbwire line in the middle of no mans land. This would prevent early on territory gain and easy wins.
    ***
    - I would add an already spawned squad of rilemen and an officer at the last trench ect. Then i would add a barbwire line as a buildable.
    - I would probably add a unit that specifies with barbwire cutting. Or add a barbwire cutters as an item to add to your soldiers.
    ***
    Edit:
    - As a lvl upgrade of a trench add helmets on sticks. This would lower the chance of getting hit by a unit in that trench by a sniper.
    - Add helmets on sticks as an item that units could use on a trench. ect.
    - Add weather, a map where its always raining, or when theres always a storm would be cool. There would be also mud, and water could gather in trenches making soldiers that stay too long there sick. As a counter to wether add buckets as an item to equip for units. It would be used to remove water.

IDEAS!! I think it looks good so far, but you should also look at the the game Trench Warfare 1917, and some ideas it had. I think the ability to send individual units over the top instead of all at one time is good, so you can send the riflemen and shotgunners over the top, and in case you fail, still have the machine gunners in the back to defend. They also have special military units for every army, and the tanks all have different power, speed, etc. for each army which kinda adds in to like specific play styles, so that each army plays a little different and is adjustable to your play style. I would definitely say you should add veterans, especially for snipers and LMG operators, with the levels increasing accuracy and reload speed. On the other hand with riflemen, officers and shotgun units, you could increase the speed of crossing trench lines. For the artillery, I’d say increasing shell amount and maybe throw in smoke or gas on high upgrades.

I think the same old trench warfare may get old after some some time, so my idea is there should be flanking opportunities and stuff like that. Also, I think it would be cool if the actual process of combat (not waiting in trenches) was slower. You could justify that with troops laying for cover, slower fire rates, more health, slower movement, more distance between trenches and stuff like that.

As you said in this vid, i think the base needs to be able to defend itself, sort of like a final boss. Let it give you and the enemy a chance to regroup and counter if the enemy overextends.
Also it would be nice if different troops can have different skins, just so you add a bit of character to them instead of them all being streamlined. This would work well with a veteran sistem where you could see the individual number of kills and maybe some other details of the soldier

    So, my set of suggestions
First, give each unit 2 upgrades. You can buy 1, locking out the other, but the other will be able to pop up in the rouglight cards. Stuff like bayonet charge/rapid fire for the riflemen, camo/scope for the sniper, fast seige/HMG for the machine gunner.
Next, for the base. I agree that killing that should be the end goal. For it's defenses, every time you unlock a new unit it becomes permanently stationed in the base. They can be killed by enemies shooting at the base or by artillery strike, and will respawn after a short time.
For a couple of units: cavalry, who are very fast, very deadly in melee, but cannot be in trenches, engineer, who slowly repairs damaged trenches and buffs the defence of a trench they are stationed in, and heavy guard, who are like infantry tanks. About as slow as tanks, but squishier and less damage, but they can sit in trenches and become almost immortal when doing so.
Finally, an ability that grants a fairly large amount of cash (500 stars?) At the cost of 1/3rd income for a while until the amount of lost income equals the amount the ability gave you up front. Great for a sudden, rapid push/big defence, at the cost of very little follow up.
Oh, and of course: MORE GAME!!!!

The veterancy idea is really cool for example if a sniper gets 5 kills their accuracy is upped by like 5% and repeats as it goes. Bit it could vary for different units like more soldiers under officers gives the officer a boost. The shotgunners could get experience from attacking trenches and machine gunners for defending trenches.

There should definitely be some kind of veteran status.. Some ideas:
Limit on how many guys can sit in a trench - this will avoid simply making a critical mass of units.
Hard cap on snipers active at the same time - at this stage it looks like snipers, despite costing medals could quite easily reach the point of wiping out enemy trenches with little to no problems.
Most basic troops, like riflemen could spawn in small squads - would make it easier to give this grand charge vibe.
Unit upgrades - perhaps a mix of defensive and offensive specialties: for example, rifle grenades for basic riflemen for defence, or bayonet charge for offence.
Some better variety of terrain - mines, barbed wire between trenches, some other environmental hazards like this.
Stalemates - typical for trench warfare, perhaps with some way of winning by going purely defensive?
Backline units - perhaps ability to convert backline trenches to hold mortar teams, medics, some sort of buffing units?

Flamethrowers were built specifically with trenches in mind. Hard to get away from a fire when youre in a hole P:
Theres also some infantry that had full body armor. They were slow, and pretty bad at moving in to take trenches, but once they were there, it was very hard to take them down. They were basically dozers from payday.
Grenadiers also totally existed in ww1, again, mostly because of trench warfare.

All the ideas you mentioned sound great, I would also love to see slow zones in between the trenches by using barbed wire, more defence bonus for troops in trenches so they take longer to take and more losses, maybe also artillery as standard for each base that automatically fires upon the enemy positions(rate of fire to b e balanced) and leaves craters(also can destroy barbed wire) which attackers can use for defence, the barrage can then be increased to 10 shots to really hurt the enemy position. this would make the games longer but also more tactical and i think fun. also a repair button for the trenches to invest into repairing sandbags and barbed wire defences.

it would be cool to keep ammo limited so that units like snipers can't fire indefinitely. Maybe the sniper only has like 7 shots then has to run back to the command center to reload (or you can buy ammo boxes to reload the ammo of all units in one trench for a limited time, exactly like Ravenfield). Or what about bunkers behind trenches that could act as bonus defense? It seems like the AI doesn't pay attention to the fact that they're being attacked, so giving more defensive options could help bolster the AI's difficulty

Great game with a lot of potential! You’ve earned yourself a customer!
Just some suggestions of mine for the game:
-Have it so that you or the enemy can put barbed wire in between trenches they own so that when the enemy attacks they are slowed down by the wires
-Make a new artillery ability to sort of counteract the barbed wire, bombardment artillery. This artillery could only be placed in between the trenches and is used to soften up the defenses destroying some barbed wire and or any other defenses. This would also have a downside for the attacker in this situation, since there would be craters where the shells hit and make it so the attacking team would have to navigate around them
-FLAMETHROWERS!!!!! AHAHAHAHAHAH! (Need I say more?)

I left a comment previously but I had another idea involving community creation, weather, and game modes instead of other things. I think it would be cool for you to be able create your own trench formations and layouts, maybe you can add big rocks or artillery stricken could leave holes in the land that would help protect units in no man’s land. For weather maybe it could rain and then that would make units traversing through no man’s land slower cus they have to go through the mud and stuff. And there could also be a survival wave game mode, where instead of trying to conquer the enemies trenches, your just trying to survive a set amount of waves with increasingly challenging enemy waves

They cant add any troops to their platoon during that final take over phase (they can only call in air strikes and maintain upgrades on their trench), so if all the troops are wiped out during this final stand they have start from the beginning trench. Man, this is so sick! I haven't watched Baron in a while but came back randomly to this and this has made me so excited because I can't believe no one has made a game like this, I've honestly been waiting for someone to make a game like this.
Some things I want to see eventually:
+ Upgrades to be in one direction rather both directions
+ Ladders - the more ladders you add to the trench the more quicker the soldiers will be able to rush the other trench rather than everyone going up the one ladder)
+ Cheap Dummy upgrades that act as an extra targets for snipers, however they don't get destroyed by sniper fire.
+ The option to bayonet charge (if shooting is impossible from the high amount of defences)
+ The ability to retreat from a charge, and withdraw troops from a trench
+ When you level up, have an option to summon multiple riflemen.
    + Higher trench levels
+ Soldiers having a basic collision, so they stand in trenches at a more reasonable distance from each other and open to possibilities of funnelling troops and barb wire to slow down assaults.
    - (or if too hard, barded wire could be used to just slow down the passage in that specific no man's land area).
+ Also, levelling up rewards should happen when the assault/defence is done.
+ And I love the veterancy idea.
+ I think the defending trench should be able to shoot onto the attackers before the attackers start to shoot.
+ Upgrade your main base to have a passive mortar that fires every 15 or so seconds on the enemy that are within a range of the main base (idk about this one though, just sort of came to my head just then)
Also with the enemy coming out of trenches as you attack... I think it's because they think there's no enemy in the trench so that's why the ai starts to attack in that moment.

A health system where each unit can take different amounts of shots. A medic to restore health. Defensive traps like barbed wire and mines. Trap removers to remove enemy traps, example minesweepers. Grenadier throws grenades into enemy trenches but slow fire and inaccurate. Flame thrower shoots a long stream of fire into enemy trenches. A supply system where you have to bring supplies like ammo and food to the frontline. An ability that infests a enemy trench with rats that eat supplies and forces soldiers in the trench to fight them so you can ambush them. A fog of war system that you have to gain line of sight. Spy unit that allows you to gain sight of the enemy base for an amount of time. Towers for defense that have to be taken down by explosives. Smoke grenadiers that keep a smoke screen to make defenders inaccurate. A unit or defense that lowers enemy fire rate. Conscription ability makes soldiers able to be bought twice as fast for a short period of time.

  • @b33mack44

Having a way to pick troops to send forward and a way to pull troops back would be great. Like if you have grenadiers and shotgunners to push a trench with riflemen while machine gunners and snipers are used to protect a trench so you don't lose everything in a push. Other than that, having a way to upgrade your base to increase supply lines, have an expert sniper who can reach out to the second closest trench, a heavy machine gunner. Also a way to have those base defenders die if attacked. Other than that, new units would be grenadiers, flame throwers, and engineers who could further upgrade a single trench by putting a heavy gun in place or repair trenches that have been damaged by artillery. If gas is added then having an upgrade to give troops a gas mask that may or may not increase survivability when gassed, air strikes, napalm strikes, maybe a gun emplacement in the center of some maps that are easily defended but slow down resource acquisition. I'm going to stop here and just watch now.

Fun game idea! One concept I thought of while watching was to not just have a linear battlefield. What if there were multiple, parallel trench systems that you had to send your troops through? For example, at its simplest, there would be a top path and bottom path, and normal troops could not shoot or attack except on the path that they were on. Perhaps soldiers could switch paths at very specific junction points.
You could get some really interesting map layouts that way, where maybe a large no-man's land in the center had two flanking complex trench systems that needed to be actively fought over very intensely, or even something larger and crazier!
Perhaps each path could provide specific bonuses and a reason to capture different trench systems? An artillery dugout, tank supplies, a hardened bunker, etc. Just a thought, but would really up intensity and decision making.

    Ideas:
    Build your own trenches.
If you have any remaining troops some of them carry over into the next battle.
Different areas with effects like in swampy areas you move slower, colder areas deplete your stars, foggy/polluted areas due to artillery makes it so your vision is limited, jungles have tunnels you can build to other trenches etc.
Morale/Desertion chance basically after it hits a certain time milestone without nothing happening There's a chance a soldier can frenzy and charge on their own or ignore your orders or straight up leave the battle.
You should have more sides and teams you can be on with different troops and specialities for each one.

    Edited: more ideas
    New game fixture
Logistics: both human and mechanized units require logistics
    (Bullets, shells & medical supplies)
I'm not saying you should add all of these as a type of currency!
Logistics will be units that bring supplies from the rear to the front lines ( think of it like Stick wars where the miners instead of bringing the gold to the rear they're bringing arrows to the archers in the front lines) (in this case logistics troop units will mostly stay out of fights and bring bullets and shells to the troops in the front lines)
If added this will mean All units have a magazine carrying limit and must be used before receiving more and if no supply unit brings more ammunition to the front lines it means your troops simply won't be able to fire their weapons (supply units can be killed just like any other)
Suppliers will only be able to carry one type of supply at a time but the player will be able to switch between what they want (when all troops are fully supplied supply units will wait two trench lines behind the front lines)
    Supply ratio
    Supply Points = SP
    Bullets 1 = SP:1
    Medical supplies 1 = SP:1
    Grenades 1 = SP:3
    Bazooka ammunition 1= SP:4
    AAA ammunition 1 =SP:4
    Tank shells 1 = SP:5
    Human supplier HP:80 SP:6
    Speed: slow
    motorcycle supplier HP:70 SP:5
    Speed: very very fast
    truck supplier HP:200 SP:15
    Speed: average
    Medium truck HP:300 SP: 20
    Speed: average
Heavy armored truck supplier HP:460 SP:35 S: has a machine gun mounted to defend itself when delivering supplies speed: slow

I think enemies leave their trenches because when you attack there are no longer soldiers on your trench, so the AI checks that and attacks thinking is a guaranteed win without taking your attacking soldiers in account.
The times they didnt got out of the trench under your attack was because they were waiting for reinforcements.

I wish enemy would use artillery barrage more, so you can't just clamp all your forces in one trench

hell yeh, I want this game!
and about things to add hire:
    tanks (obviously)
    flamethrowers
    toxic gas and stuff
    and (maybe) upgrades

being able to tell snipers to stay and defend while the others attack would be a +1 strategy
also make the trenches more usefull, if u need just 2 more soldiers to win like a 7 vs 5 that s useless.
and also troops that damage the trenches.
focus a little bit on the trenches since it s basically the inovative part of the game.

You forgot to mention the 3rd game you based it on with the WW1 trench game also on armorgames. Love that you made this. Good take on the classic browser war games.

Map idea's: a map with normal to trenches but with the middle point in water, a map in the mountains, a map in de jungle as it would buff the snipers damage, same with a snow map
Troop idea's: a flamethrower that would do burn damage over time, rocket launchers as it would be the same like artillery only less expensive, maybe heli's that would be like a troop that needs gas/oil to fly and will be limited time and you would be able to put 4-6 troops in it, olsoo for a water map I mentioned you could have sub troops rifle man with air tanks and oil pump basically just a pump to extract oil from the ground for heli's
Power up idea's: elite force would spawn 5-10 troops 2 rifleman 3 light machine gun 2 snipers 1 officer 2 rocket launcher, another one called "well oiled machine" it would upgrade all oil pumps and guns with 50% extra collection speed and 50% extra damage
Ore idea's: oil, iron, iron would be like gold but for oil pumps and vehicles, olsoo iron could be used for people with pistol not officers but like less health but more speed

love this, a tweak, maybe have the rifflemen take shots from in the trench but at a really bad hit rate, it would slow down turtling as well as add some visual dynamics to the fight
