Stewart Lee made a good point, although he didn't specifically say that it was about Jeremy Corbyn, that its just not as funny; and as a comedian, if its not funny, why would you focus on it?
I HATE when people call Stewart Lee 'smug'... He is ANYTHING but that! If he's laughing at (and with) his audience then he's also laughing at himself... NO OTHER COMEDIAN does what he does... His audience know, (and like!!!) more REGULAR comedians... He simply shows us why we PROBABLY shouldn't!!! To know what you are SUPPOSED to do, and then frankly Not Do That, is as sublime as it is RISKY!!! (I've seen him live several times and his shows are FULL of soul, questions and LOVE...) Man's a FUCKING DIAMOND. xx SF
Naughtie appears to be quite obsessed with claw-hammering in Jeremy Corbyn (despite Lee not bringing it up himself, and very few of the pieces in his book referencing the man). Did the man only bring Lee on so he could attack 1) Corbyn and 2) what he perceives to be a coterie of left-leaning comedians that back him? Is this what happens on all the Meet the Author episodes?
Yeah, it was a really odd thing to bring up. He goes on as if every comedian bashes the Tories non-stop when Lee and Frankie Boyle are the only ones with any popularity that I've seen do that, and I'm fairly certain I watch a lot more stand-up than he does.
wasn't it! ..."Since we're talking about Corbyn..." you're the one talking about Corbyn mate! Just a sly way to try and change perception about Corbyn. Self-victimisation of the powerful.
It's also just a weird choice of forum for what he's doing. I understand why they'd want to skewer him in general news coverage even if it is a reprehensible thing to do, but what's the point of doing it in some obscure segment that virtually nobody outside of huge Stewart Lee fans is gonna watch? Who's he even trying to win over?
Independent Man In the arts generally, maybe, but most of the popular comedians in the UK are pretty apolitical. That guy was making it out like comedians are all in some kind of pro-Corbyn cabal and anyone who makes fun of him is outcast when the reality is most comedians just do jokes about being frustrated that their toasters aren't working or something. The only two notable ones I can think of who've been expressly against the Tories are Lee and Frankie Boyle, and they don't really occupy that much space on TV (Boyle has leftover notoriety from Mock the Week and other stuff but he's essentially relegated to making the odd iPlayer show now. Lee only ever had a mildly popular late night BBC2 show, which just got cancelled). So it's not really based on anything real and even if it were it's an odd line of questioning to spend a good third of the interview on
+GiantSandles Actually it's not if you are in touch with the cultural zeitgeist of the day. The presumptive arrogance of the media and the failure of left wing politics that has devolved into identity politics. The media is worse than the arts but the arts have been reflecting the medias views back at them by and large. Just look at the chorus of celebrities that turned out in support of Hillary Clinton.
The Israel lobby is very very strong. Poor guy predictably and farcically smeared as an anti-semite for having once had the temerity to campaign for Palestinian human rights and an end to the brutal and illegal Israeli occupation.
tory media queen asks left comedian why Corbyn gets a pass? wrong show...isnt there a reality irritation show that requires a bad Scottish accent for this dude. waste of space talking to intelligent people.
From body language to discourse dynamics, like an articulate prefect summoned to the head’s office because he has somehow not lived up to the role expectations. Stewart game-fully plays along.
@@andrewtucker94 what do you mean? He had the party whip removed, he was demonised for years by the labour right and the pro-Israel lobby. Where have you been?
Stewart seems like a genuinely affable guy. Very, very different from his onstage persona. Much better than the other way round. Meaning if someone was friendly and jocular onstage, but then was a total self-righteous tool personally.
There's also a point to be made about the constant, almost automatic ridicule in the media and comedy of party leaders for cheap laughs. Comedians should use their mockery to call out leaders on hypocrisy and cruelty etc, not mocking folk like Corbyn for accidentally reading out an autocue line in a speech. If Corbyn proved to be a hypocrite he would be deserving of the same scorn reserved for May et al., attacking him the sake of balance is idiotic.
TheMJNicholls most of the cheap laughs I have seen have come from autocue read jokes on BBC panel shows. Who, instead of using satire critically, will take endless cheap shots at May and Boris etc.
Stuart Lee makes me laugh a lot, but the funniest thing I've ever heard on the BBC is when James Naughtie did his line about "Jeremy Cunt, the culture secretary" live on the Today programme. An edgy comic genius with a great line in giggle-coughing.
An example of how deep the conspiracy against Corbyn was and how complicit the BBC were in it. Naughtie uses this interview as an attempt to undermine him by proxy even though Lee had never been particularly strident in his support of JC.
Pointless punching down on a leader with no power and is a pretty decent, thoughtful, down to earth bloke. When you have a government full of selfish cuts you can tear apart..
Lot of criticism for the interviewer below. Misguided. As an interviewer you need to bring up uncomfortable or contrary issues. At no point did Stu Lee get Ang Lee, er, typo, angry. (Credit S.Lee rather than A.Lee) He seemed entirely comfortable with the interviewer, and seemed to even have a fair rapport with the guy. Interesting video.
Dissect this. Great way of answering your enemies. Pick on words of Naughty. "Tell me more about What you mean by poisonous point of view?" Corbyn Revolution? What this the similar phrase for May?
Does Naughtie ask many authors why they don’t write something else entirely? He raised the subject of Corbyn, and went on about him, when Lee says very little about him, and Lee certainly isn’t responsible for any other comedian’s routines. Naughtie might have explored Lee’s stage techniques, his creative processes, why writing for newspapers is different to stand up, why he chose to publish his articles, any plans that he might have for writing a novel or another stage production, or any one of a hundred other perfectly reasonable subjects, instead of which he decided to show his own prejudices and utterly fail to deal with his subject in an artistic and exploratory way to throw light upon his work. Stewart Lee has shown greater insight into his own work within his ‘Comedy Vehicle’ series than Naughtie managed here. A waste of Lee’s time and ours as well.
Wow I never realised how much of a prick James Naughtie is. The arrogance of the guy constantly reminding Stew that he’s perfectly entitled to have a go at the media. Stew did a good job not rising to it imo
Lee makes a really interesting point in his first answer - I wonder how this will affect journalists' writing styles as the gap between writer and read narrows?
I enjoyed this interview, although I think the country is split more than 50-50. Neither is this division any recent development. It has been simmering under the surface for some time. However, I think Stewart Lee is right to point out the lack of courage on the part of columnists and comedians to tone down their making fun of politicians because their own job depends on those that are connected to "that side of the house", as he puts it.
R,isn't a 50/50 split the definition of been SPLIT!? or would it more split in your opinion if the figure was 60/40 or 70/30 even?! I think 50/50 is pretty much as devided (or split) as it gets mate..
It seems to be Stewart Lee's curse to be perpetually interviewed be people who know nothing about him ("fills the biggest arenas"?!), have no interest in anything he has to say, and change the subject with every question -- when they're not talking over him. So frustrating, as Lee actually does have a lot of interesting insights ... so far as I can tell.
"So how come people who mock people in power aren't mocking people who aren't in power?" It's quite amazing to hear a guy who couldn't manage to muster the professionalism to not bring his own politics into an interview criticising those whose job IS to bring their political opinion into what they do for bringing their political view into what they do. What a knob.
Taking someone's old material, replacing the noun and presenting it in a written form is as funny today as it ever was. That this is the person, not the on-stage persona is seemingly lost on many people. Corbyn is an interesting subject. Since the opposition party wields little power it isn't easy to point to any impact they have made to the country and seemingly lacking the skeleton filled closet, it's things like some of the donors and of them, non are widely viewed as dubious. I note Bernie Ecclestone has given up trying to buy his knighthood for services to racial harmony so it's tough going to find something or someone topical. I note Jim Davidson cracked a wonderful 1-liner - 'Vote Corbyn, get Abbott'. Who wouldn't sell their soul for that kind of material? Jeremy Clarkson's effort was 'Why doesn’t anyone trust Jeremy Corbyn to put up the Christmas tree? Because it always leans to the left'. Jokes for official Conservative Christmas crackers (really). Maybe it was meant to be that bad? One can only hope so. Geoff Norcott had 'Corbyn is like fidget spinners - last year massive, this year nothing'. I promise that it was delivered as a joke, but his actual knowledge of politics put me in mind of an inexpert motor mechanic deliberating public transport policy. 'He doesn't believe in money. He's like a vegetarian running a barbecue'. was his next 1,2,3. I didn't rate him and I promise, if it had made me laugh, I wouldn't lie about it. He didn't. Maybe others will? Anyone? Roy 'Chubby' Brown came out with 'I think he (Corbyn) could to with a wash and shave to be honest with you. He needs to go home and have a think about what he wants and stop changing his mind. Everything the Government decides to do he just votes against it'. I am unable to detect if that is or is not a joke, I don't know the man's métier. So it appears that whatever someones political persuasion, Corbyn is not amenable as a topic. I note he is now wearing a white shirt and suit rather than the previous blue shirt with top button undone - a makeover to take the reigns of power? That isn't a strong line is it? How far can you take it? I'm as interested as anyone else to know if there ARE good Corbyn jokes but I have utterly failed to uncover one or even suggest an avenue to research. The recent spy thing came and went so soon and since nobody believed a word of it, that won't fly either. He's not even left-handed...
I think corbyn would rather have the mainstream media on his side than stand up comics. Rupert murdoch and Co hold far more persuasive power than stand up comics.
I feel Stew missed a kind of open goal here, in that comedy as a counter culture always finds its best stuff in contrasting itself to the governing powers. To pick a fight with the opposition, whilst they remain part of the establishment, is sort of pointless, because they're not the people who are immediately affecting futures and lives in that period. Why would you pick upon the lesser of two 'evils' when only one side of the spectrum is ever fully realised in government at any one time?
In a time after Corbyn lost, it shows why it wasn't important to satirise him as much. He was not the leader of the party in power and when that's the case, the need for satire is nowhere near as strong, whereas satire about the tories in 2016 is still mostly relevant
Has anyone else noticed that an awful lot of interviews produce RUclips comments in which people attack the interviewer? Is there some systemic problem with interviewers, or is this actually just a roundabout way of defending the interviewee? Discuss (if you'd be so kind).
the main problem here is that meet the author is supposed to be a fairly gentle interview and naughtie overpersonalises it by using words like toxic and also seems to be attempting to push his own agenda.
If I had to to suggest a theory based on zero research it would be that on radio and TV people follow shows with presenters they like and they judge the guests as good or bad, whereas on RUclips people follow an artist (or whatever) and thus judge the interviewers.
Good point, but if true the question remains of why commenters are paying more attention to the interviewer than the interviewee (who, of course, is the reason they've clicked to watch).
because increasingly they are not benign presences who subtly try to draw out information butare directly confrontational personalities who are trying to boost their own profiles.
I agree to an extent, there does seem to be a post-Paxman effect, if you like, but there also seems to be a phenomenon of interviewers being attacked really just for disagreeing with the interviewee. How cordial do we expect someone to be in a debate?
