Irene Acosta, I bet most people know just about know or name every song from the original MARY POPPINS. But will not be able to name one or be able to hum a tune from MARY POPPINS RETURNS.
So glad I watched “Saving Mr. Banks” before watching “Mary Poppins Returns”. The author P.L.Travers disliked the Disney 1960s film adaptation that the majority of the public loved and approved. If P.L. Travers were still alive today, she would had approved more the sequel and the performance of Emily Blunt who did stayed faithful to the Mary Poppins from the books.
Even though Emily did great in Mary Poppins Return, but I love the 1964 Mary Poppins. So I cannot choose; there are both supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
1964 Mary Poppins will always be the number classic in every way-hands down. Mary Poppins returns is just that, a sequel and should be rated and understood for what it conveys; The Return of May Poppins and should be enjoyed for it's own worth and different kind of fun it brings to the audience. So enjoy!
Objection! Blunt's take on Mary Poppins, inspired by the version from the books is the superior Poppins. While not exactly like the literary Mary Poppins (that character would be hard to like on screen), her playing up of Mary's various flaws and eccentricities creates a good middle ground between Andrews's version and Travers's. The end result is a surprisingly complex character. She's strict, vain , haughty, sharp and a little batty but is also capable of showing surprising emotional depth at times (like when she's singing "The Place Where Lost Things Go"). Look, Julie Andrews is great and all. Blunt's Mary Poppins has more character, though.
Grief is a important topic, especially in a kids film, but if you don't care or connect with the characters or the love one they've lost.... it's doesn't mean a thing
Both great. Julie's an icon. She will live in my heart for the rest of my lost. I think her voice sounds exactly like love. Poppins and Sound of Music are the best!
Of course the sequel was never going to be as good as the original. We all knew this! But I still loved it and was super happy with the result. Nothing can beat Julie Andrews, but Emily Blunt was amazing and I loved her version. And I loved the music and the costumes and sets in the new one. It felt like a continuation story, which is what I wanted. You can love them both!
I don't care about what anyone says about any of the topics, the original will always be the best for me in every way. Don't get me wrong, the sequel is good but it will never be as special to me as the original.
Mary Poppins Returns made me cry more than Mary Poppins but Mary Poppins made me smile more... lol Both fantastic movies, both INCREDIBLE actresses! No need to compare :)
4:25 “the costumes look as if they were painted on” yeah. it’s because they actually were. the costume designer opted to hand paint them so they looked more cartoonish. mary’s ruffles aren’t ruffles, they’re painted on
The original's songs are used in the score of the new film and they easily upstage the new material. They're moving in a way the newer ones will never be.
I took my grandkids to see Mary Poppins Returns. They had already seen the original many times before. Their initial impression was that they liked Mary Poppins Returns better, but when asked again after some a few years have passed, they couldn't remember much about Mary Poppins Returns or sing any songs from it. But they could sing any song from the original Mary Poppins easily when prompted and knew the story intimately. It seems that the original has a certain magic and soul that RETURNS lacks
The original is a well established classic Disney film while "The return of Mary Poppins" has just been released this past year. I think we have to wait a few years to see how it gets old. If ten years from now the sequel is barely remembered...well, there you have your winner.
Mary Poppins is by far the greatest film ever released. The fact that this sequel at least comes close is a source of great comfort and joy. Looking forward to the next life-affirming instalment.
Original Mary Poppins was of the heart, and convinced Mr. Banks that money isn't everything, rather to fly a kite, feed the birds, and spending time with his family. Mary Poppins Returns centered around money, and the savings of the house. It also had threads that had little, if anything to do with moving the plot along. I see no comparison at all. The writing in MP Returns gave nearly opposite messages, one towards altruism and the other towards materialism.
Who else has been keeping track of which songs from the original have counterparts in the sequel? A Spoonful of Sugar - Can You Imagine That? Feed the Birds - Where the Lost Things Go Step in Time - Trip a Little Light Fantastic and so on. My personal favourite is by far Cover is Not the Book; yes, that means my favourite song from both movies. What's yours?
I have to say though that I was impressed by Mary Poppins Returns. However, you can't compare the two because the original is one of the greatest movies and still holds up.
Honestly, I can’t pick! Mary Poppins means so much to me sentimentally but I’ve fallen in love with the new one, particularly the new songs. *A Cover Is Not The Book* is a bop.
Yes I know it was established near the beginning of MPR that Bert was taking a trip around the world; he could've been on his last leg by midway through the film's events. Judging by the movie's story's timing I'd say he'd been back for the first few days of the second week Mary Poppins had been in her charge with the children since he landed that last saturday of the previous week; that would've given Bert plenty of time to set up that little charade.
Emily Blunt lived up to her name in Mary Poppins Returns. She sounded & looked blunt there. Yes, Mary Poppins Julie Andrews is incomparable. She was firm but her happy disposition (which we hardly see in Mary Poppins Returns' Emily Blunt) was and is so lovable & adorable, especially to kids &/or the kids at heart. 😊
I love both movies as most everyone does (those who loved the first one, seem to also enjoy and love this new one too). However; being totally honest with myself, as hard as it is for me to say it, I have to go with Emily Blunt's, Mary. She portrays a character that's more in line with the one described in the original books, she's more blunt/"frank", more stern, more vein, and has a more complex personality. Also; for me the number one reason I like her portrayal of this character better is, her ability to embrace the magic she possess. In the first movie, Burt has to practically beg her to do her magic, at times she seems almost embarrassed by it, and of course denies it all together when confronted. The "new" Mary, really seems to enjoy the fact that she has magic powers, and does not have to be begged by anyone to use them. Take for example her actions and reactions in the scene where she introduces us to the song: "Can you imagine that?!" As she sings the song, she sets up the magical adventure they're about to have by tossing in several items into the bath tub, after the children fall into the bath and disappear; she says with a wide heartfelt smile, "and away we go!" She's totally into it! I love that about her, and for me, she beats out Julie Andrew's version of Mary Poppins. Hard to admit, but true. IMO.
I have the 64 movie on VHS and I have seen the new one two I love both a lot they are soo good big time and I love the songs in the 64 movie and the new one they are very good and I cant wait to get the new one on DVD then it comes out this year and I love your videos guys a lot they are soooooo good on here big time and keep up the hard work making your videos on here guys you rock hard
Stop trying to compare which is better. The original is always going to be on top as it’s a classic. Every kid even in this generation has watched Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins Returns did what many sequel of old classics couldn’t do, it shines in its own success. Blunt played her role for Mary Poppins to the way she was in the books and in a way it didn’t steal the limelight away from the original. They didn’t strive to make Mary Poppins Return to be better than the first one. They aimed for it to keep the magic of Mary Poppins alive and which they all did very well. The sequel was great. They kept the magic of the original but they gave it a fresh new energetic feel. As for those that says there was no connection to the music, I call bullshit. If you stop trying to compare them to the original score, you’ll see the connections and the meanings for each song. I was blown away by how well the movie flowed and the messages it brings. Grief, depression, lost, failure, strength, loss of innocence. I felt that in every song. No it’s not going to be better than the original but they weren’t trying to.
I say it should be a tie cause the original and sequel have same meaning plot (family bonds and magical adventure), their own songs, the sequel respects the 1st, and both Marry's personas r the same; kind, caring, well-mannered, stern, and no-nonsense but most of all classy.
I’ve loved the first film from childhood - in fact a large reason I wanted to work with children is because being like Mary Poppins seemed so fun - but I love the second one too. You can never sing too much in an situation!
Both are very good. Just finished watching both! It's its 60th anniversary this year. It's 50 - 50 for me. Both has its own merits. This is like comparing Nolan's Batman and Reeve's Batman. To me, both shined as a film.
I only watched Mary Poppins returns and I’ve heard good reviews of the original. Since I have no context on it yet since I only watched the sequel. But hey, maybe the original might be good.
I am only 12 years old. But In my opinion, I loved or prefered the original and the one and only Julie Andrews. Even though, Emily Blunt did such a great acting on being a Mary Poppins. By the way I loved both of them.
Mary Poppins is one of my favorite movies. I was hoping the sequel would be alright (knowing that it can't compare.) If I didn't have kids with me, I'd have walked out. It wasn't good. Not gonna go into comparing actors and whatnot, the main letdown for me what that the original didn't fall into the tired 'heroes and villains' trope. Yes, there were the bankers but it was minor. Much like 'my neighbor totoro' for example, where the crux is the family. The remake on the other hand is simply derivative. Racing against the clock so not to lose the house... Come on. Anyway, the new movie will be forgotten in a few years and the original will still be popular decades from now.
I agree that Julie is a better Poppins than Emily Blunt, but I actually liked the songs of the sequel better than the original, as I found them more joyful overall, whereas the original had a melancholy sound to it at times, which to me, permeates the film too much. Overall, I like the tone of the sequel much better. The only thing I like a bit better about the original was Julie Andrews- and I was going to say Dick Van Dyke too- but he makes an appearance here during a very pivotal moment. So, to me, the remake is better overall, though they are both very special films.
I like Mary Poppins Returns a lot , but the original just can’t be compared. Blunt plays her role well , but , as good as she is , just doesn’t possess the charismatic charm that is natural in Julie Andrews. The 1964 film was pure magic , for 1964 , and Mary Poppins Returns only reinforces the originals supremacy.
Alot of people likes the original Mary Poppins, and Alot likes mary Poppins returns, then there are those who likes both. Here’s the kicker Julie Andrews who played the original Mary Poppins gave her blessing to Emily Blunt to play Mary Poppins in the sequel, and Julie Andrews herself watched Mary Poppins returns and gave it her seal of approval.
Julie Andrews is the Mary Poppins we all grew up with and loved so much and I totally agree with her and the first movie being the winners of this comparison. Although with the bar being raised that high, i think Emily Blunt did a magnificent job and ,as the video mentioned, her approach was closer to the books. Julie Andrews is the Mary Poppins in all people's hearts but Emily has once again proven her skills and extraordinary talent by stepping into Julie's shoes and continues her legacy ... And I have to admit, I am so happy that people appreciate Emily's work in this one and not being all too stubborn about the og and snubbing the sequel
Just say what you want to say. I dont care. The point this video made is bassicly show why mary poppins is a movie beyond the word "good", "briliant", "excellent" or even "outstanding". Both movies is just simply... supercallifragilisticexpialidocious
For me the storyline of the MP1 is better than MP2. The graphics from the MP1 is better as it holds sentimental worth. The songs of the MP1 are better than those in MP2 although Emily Blunt did a great job!
Did you just compare the animation of a movie from 1965 to one from 2018?! That's not really fair, is it? I like both movies but the original is a classic and magical! ❤️
I watched "Returns" on the BBC on Christmas Day and against all expectations, quite enjoyed it. I especially appreciated Lin-Manuel Miranda's very fine performance. It was an ironic fact that a native born New Yorker could execute a flawless Cockney accent whereas the English Emily Blunt could not pull off a convincing plummy old school English accent ! The improvements in filming techniques were very apparent and the references, both musical and otherwise to the original were timely and not overdone at all. Lovely too to see a brief appearance by Michelle Dotrice and Dick van Dyke towards the end.. The film's biggest failings, if they could be called that by comparison to the original, is that I defy anyone to be able to remember any of the tunes after leaving the film behind. I enjoyed the music, although struggled to latch on to the words (a common fault in modern film making where audible and legible dialogue is NOT a priority). The two best numbers0w ere undeniably The Lovely London Skies and the poignantly lovely Place where Lost Things Go. But will these become part of modern culture like Chim Chim Cheree for example ? I doubt it.
Julie Andrews had a pure , clear soprano voice. Nothing could compare. She was offered a cameo, but turned it down as not to distract from Emily’s performance

Irene Acosta, I bet most people know just about know or name every song from the original MARY POPPINS. But will not be able to name one or be able to hum a tune from MARY POPPINS RETURNS.
Mara Pemberton But It was going to take a little more than a beat by beat storyline to ruin my enjoyment. Because it didn’t not so easily
I’m just gonna guess that the OG Mary Poppins will win due to its impact and pure nostalgia 👌🏽
GØDLY I agree !
I love Emily Blunt, but Julie Andrews IS Mary Poppins.
Not according to P.L. Travers!
I LOVE the original but I actually preferred Emily’s take of character better
1964 Mary Poppins will always be the number classic in every way-hands down. Mary Poppins returns is just that, a sequel and should be rated and understood for what it conveys; The Return of May Poppins and should be enjoyed for it's own worth and different kind of fun it brings to the audience. So enjoy!
As much as I love Mary Poppins Returns, let's face it, you can't beat the original Mary Poppins
I did not hit her, it's bullshit. I did not hit her. I DID NOT!
Oh hi mark
Julie Andrews is the only Mary Poppins.
True
Emily Blunt did a magnificent job, but Julie Andrews IS Mary Poppins.
Walt Disney himself personally picked Julie to play the role, so how can you beat that? Julie won an Oscar for this movie!
I totally agree to you
No, JULIE! No, EMILY! No, JULIE! No,EMILY! It's both for me, but PREFERRED? JULIE!!
No, the best Mary Poppins is Yondu
No one will remember Blunt as Mary Poppins. Julie will always be Mary Poppins.
I prefer Julie's Mary, but to each their own.
My kids think they are both equal because both of them have lovely songs and they are both magical.
Don't get me wrong, the sequel is good but it will never be as special to me as the original.
the original!!!! i always get at the verge of tears everytime i hear feed the birds
Emily blunt terrific outstanding job as
Mary Poppins nobody can't replace Julia andrews
Mary Poppins Returns made me cry more than Mary Poppins but Mary Poppins made me smile more... lol
Both fantastic movies, both INCREDIBLE actresses! No need to compare :)
Mary poppins 1964 is the best i love this movie 🎥 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Couldn’t agree more 👏🏼 Mary Poppins Returns is wonderful in its own way but nothing will beat the classic ❤️
4:25 “the costumes look as if they were painted on”
yeah. it’s because they actually were. the costume designer opted to hand paint them so they looked more cartoonish. mary’s ruffles aren’t ruffles, they’re painted on
The original's songs are used in the score of the new film and they easily upstage the new material. They're moving in a way the newer ones will never be.
@@jcrum417 well thats your opinion
Older one BETTER
That's why she's Dame Julie Andrews!
There is no comparison. The 1964 Mary Poppins is far and away the best of the two.
Who else has been keeping track of which songs from the original have counterparts in the sequel?
A Spoonful of Sugar - Can You Imagine That?
Feed the Birds - Where the Lost Things Go
Step in Time - Trip a Little Light Fantastic
and so on. My personal favourite is by far Cover is Not the Book; yes, that means my favourite song from both movies. What's yours?
Julie is a Legend... but Blunt should also take credit from the author’s (Travers) perspective... :)
I think both are practically perfect in every way.
Julie Andrews is Mary Poppins.🥰😍😘🤩I Love her.
I have to say though that I was impressed by Mary Poppins Returns. However, you can't compare the two because the original is one of the greatest movies and still holds up.
No comparison
TBH I think this tried to make it a close call, I'm sorry but Mary Poppins Returns really paled in comparison to the original.
debatable
@@Gandellion I didnt like new one at all
Honestly, I can’t pick! Mary Poppins means so much to me sentimentally but I’ve fallen in love with the new one, particularly the new songs. *A Cover Is Not The Book* is a bop.
Julie Andrews was , is & always shall remain my Mary Poppins.Flawless in every way❤️
Love how this “which is better” video was unbiased as and only focused on which movie did something that is in both of them the strongest.
I didn’t like Mary Poppins Returns as much as the first film, but I am still thankful that it exists.
IMO.
Agree with this. Only problem with this is that you said when she dived into the bath that she said,"Away we go." She actually says,"Off we go."
The Mary Poppins Returns soundtrack is the best film score of the 2010's imo.
If being "timeless" was the biggest challenge, then no remake or sequel will top the original.
Both are awesome movies but I prefer 1964 version. Emily did her best but her voice is a bit..... Ms Andrews voice is a gem.
I like both, but the firat one feels more magical and the songs are better
They were both fantastic...
But original is 💖
I say it should be a tie cause the original and sequel have same meaning plot (family bonds and magical adventure), their own songs, the sequel respects the 1st, and both Marry's personas r the same; kind, caring, well-mannered, stern, and no-nonsense but most of all classy.
So cute. Altlough I watched Mary Poppins since I was a Child, I love the version of the 1960s But seeing the new version I guess I like both.
I’ve loved the first film from childhood - in fact a large reason I wanted to work with children is because being like Mary Poppins seemed so fun - but I love the second one too. You can never sing too much in an situation!
I went to see the first one tday personally I think the songs in the first one are better! But I can’t pick a winner
Both are very good. Just finished watching both! It's its 60th anniversary this year.
It's 50 - 50 for me. Both has its own merits. This is like comparing Nolan's Batman and Reeve's Batman. To me, both shined as a film.
Mary Poppins Returns also makes references to the original!
The first one is better.
I agree
Thank you for crediting me and making my another suggestion.
Mary Poppins is one of my favorite movies. I was hoping the sequel would be alright (knowing that it can't compare.)
If I didn't have kids with me, I'd have walked out.
Emily Blunt was great, but I don’t think ANYONE would ever beat iconic Julie Andrews.
I love Emily Blunt 😍😍
We all know that no one can replace Julie Andrews. Emily Blunt was amazing but there is no question that the original was 1000% better
My kids (6y and 3y) did not like the music from the new movie. We actually left the movie listening to the original soundtrack.
Just say what you want to say. I dont care. The point this video made is bassicly show why mary poppins is a movie beyond the word "good", "briliant", "excellent" or even "outstanding".
Both movies is just simply... supercallifragilisticexpialidocious
Actually both of these movies are great
For me the storyline of the MP1 is better than MP2. The graphics from the MP1 is better as it holds sentimental worth. The songs of the MP1 are better than those in MP2 although Emily Blunt did a great job!
You have no idea how pissed I was whenever Julie won but same would’ve happened if she didn’t cuz I’m lowkey obsessed with both of them 😂❤️❤️
Julie Andrews 👍🏻😊
Julie Andrews made the original timeless & so perfect
Why wasn't Lin-manuel Miranda mentioned?
Sharkz_73 he’s the best! Not gonna lie, he’s my favourite character!
@@elvispresleyfanforever6898 same
Sharkz_73 EXACTLY THEY THREW AWAY HIS SHOT
Tilly Vlogs I KNOW RIGHT?!?!
The first one is amazing but I love the 2nd one so much more for some reason I'm not sure why but it's my opinion
Ammm… Emily is really great and I love her💝, but only Julie Andrews can make me believe that Mary Poppins is "Practically perfect in every way"✨…
There was no need for the sequel
Did you just compare the animation of a movie from 1965 to one from 2018?! That's not really fair, is it?
I like both movies but the original is a classic and magical! ❤️
The ad before this was the Dear Evan Hansen movie trailer and now I'm crying 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I doubt it.
I was born in 2004 and have never seen the original so I can’t really say which is better but I really enjoyed the new one ❤️
