This was filmed alongside 73 Yards, at the start of production, this is why we see very little of the Doctor or Ruby actually physically present. In fact their scenes in the bubble were all done over a day with autocue for them to read their lines.
I was hoping that they might show the Finetime people getting eaten on the boat. As for the Doctor crying that is him releasing the sadness he has especially for those stupid, ignorant people.
“When we cast Ncuti people were asking what’s it going to be like when his Doctor goes back in time. How is a black Doctor going to deal with racism? But I’m sitting there thinking, why do people think we have to go back in time to deal with racism? Look at everything going on in the world today.” -Russell T Davies (speaking about this episode)
heres hints all through the episode about the finetime people being racist, like them saying it was his duty to save them, or despite his looks hes smart, and thinking after blocking him that they just "looked the same", also when he hacked into the system she could have used any other word but she used punished, like how an owner puinishes a slave, and calling the tardis voodoo, also being disgusted that the doctor and ruby were in the same room
they didnt go with the doctor because hes a black pilot, thats why he was mad than sad and ruby walked away at the end before the doctor , she understood what was going on and that he couldn't change there minds, despite there prejudice he still wants to help people thats why he had that breakdown he was mad then sad
@@IotaOmicron825 most likely they are just terrible people I would have let them all die but the doctor is a good person and looks past the prejudice against him cuz he wants to help people he at least have them a chance
That makes total sense! I just mainly thought that there will be times that the Doctor cant save someone who doesnt want to be saved, but looking back on the way she and the other characters interact with him, the way the girl listened more to Ruby than the Doctor, and this choice of words like this comment pointed out, damn it puts the whole ep into perspective
At the beginning of the episode I was expecting a fairly standard plot where Lindy would eventually break free from her bubble and help save the day, but I love how they made the person we'd been following the entire time end up just being a terrible person. It's always so interesting when that happens and it makes you look back through the story and re-contextualize different things she did throughout it.
Basically stuck in her bubble even without it. The fact she ratted on her crush was grim enough but the doctor and Ruby saved her life and very little thanks.
At first I thought Ricky might turn out to be a bad guy.... turns out he was probably, sadly, the only one worth saving. 😢 Happily though, I think they all got "slugged" in the woods, so....happy tears for that! 😂
He shouts and screams for no apparent reason. Why didn't he try and convince the people before the silly bitch got into the room about his attempts to rescue them it makes no sense yet again.
@@flaggerify Not completly. Last week and this week had shedule problems with his filming for the new season of "Sex education" So they coupled a few minutes together, just to have the Doctor for context. But, they did it well, jod job.
I highly doubt we will ever get a follow-up for this episode, since I thought the implication was pretty clear that they were going to their deaths. There's no way these young, rich kids who never even learnt to walk or think for themselves, are going to survive out there alone in the "wild woods".. Hence why the Doctor tried so hard to get them to go with him instead. However, they literally chose death, over being saved by a black person. It was so awful and so brilliant at the same time, and the Doctor's reaction was heartbreaking. I absolutely loved it.
As soon as they drank the wild water they all got sick and the predators put them out of their misery. I think the slugs where a weapon and they had a list but given by who?
Absolutely! There is no way these sheltered, pampered kids can survive in the wild. They won't know how to find food, or make shelter and who knows what kind of predators would be out there. They are pretty much dead meat.
The actress was so good. She plays it so well. Even at the end on the boat, you can see that look in her eyes of maybe we should have gone with him. Such good acting. She definitely made us dislike her.
I didn't notice the racism until Lindy accused the doctor of voodoo. Then it suddenly all clicked and I felt as shell-shocked as them. Brilliant episode and social commentary on the racism and elitism inherent in many algorithms: the stupidity of being in your own online bubble/echo chamber. Smart writing and great performances.
@@fayesouthall6604 I was half expecting the doctor to keep his eyes on Lindy as he opened the Tardis door so he could see her reaction when she could see inside.
Ncuti gave an absolutely incredible performance in the last few minutes of this episode. The Doctor, for the longest time, always took command of the room, and people always made sure to follow his lead so they could guarantee their safety and survival. This was the first time that people had refused his help for absolutely no legitimate reason, and he doesn't know how to deal with it. For a Time Lord like him he can't grasp the idea of people refusing his help over something so trivial as preconceived class, appearance, and downplayed intelligence. Like the microaggressions these full of themselves rich kids were giving him despite him being the only reason why any of these people escaped the city alive were infuriating to hear yelled out to someone as patient as The Doctor. The physical performance Ncuti gave was masterful, especially with his facial expressions. At first I was confused why they made the situational main characters such big assholes in this episode but I'm glad they did go in this direction because they definitely went somewhere with it by the end of the episode. RIP Ricky. 😔 Gone but not forgotten. There's no resolution to the racism in Dot and Bubble. No big Doctor Who speech and no redemption; even the Doctor can only cry in anguish against the self-inflicted stupidity of it all. That's harrowing. Incredible episode! I'm giving it a strong 9/10!
That you think its racism makes you the actual snowflakes in the episode. That's the irony. You missed the point of the eposide snowflake. You are not the hero with this mindset and ideology. You are makeing political rhetoric posts on social media from the safety of your bubble. Just like the MC of this eposide was. You are acting a revolutionary and a hero, demanding respect. despite not earning it or being any of those things. You think you are the doctor in this episode. But in reality you are the asshats the episode built up. Think about it. You are sitting here talking political and race, out of nowhere. Using terms like microaggressions. And all these words your weak snowflake generation made up. You are not doing anything useful. Yet you demand respect. I say no. You are the people who would throw others to slugs to save your own life. You are the MC. you are the evil every single finetimer was written to represent. And best of all like the finetimers you dont even understand that. You think you are the good guys. You are weak snowflakes postureing for clout. Worst of all for you. there is no doctor who will save people like you in the real world. You will find that out real quick if the current state of your country blows up and escalates. Nobody wants you, nobody will save you, you are not helpful to anyone. There is no doctor in the real world. Thats why he is such a fantastical charictor. He is the good and the empathy that humanity does not actually possess.
Ill be honest I didnt catch the ending was about racism until someone pointed it out... I thought it was a class issue, like you and ruby arent one of us so get fucked....a piece of genius writing for it to be subtle enough that it didnt feel like racism initially but on a second viewing thats what it was. Also sidenote, first main character in doctor who ive legitimately wanted to see dead the entire section she was there.....so fuckin annoying
My heart breaks for the Doctor at the end. It’s him realizing the futility of everything he’s done this episode, that the Finetime system was right to hate these guys, but above all it’s his self-image being so slightly shattered- it’s him realizing that to some dumb, evil parts of the universe, he will always be his skin color first and “The Doctor” second.
This had nothing to do with skin color. By stateing that it does and stating the finetimers are a stand in for the entire white race. Or the proudboys or the KKK. You are ironicly just lindy you are not the doctor. You are a racebaiting social mongoloid addicted to the bubble. Pretending to be a revolutionary thinker. Congrats you are the finetimers isnt it wonderful.
@@darrenrichardson6146 No YOU dont get it snowflake. You are the fine timers with this ignorance and instance on waxing political from the safety of your bubble. Despite being nobody and nothing, and contributing nothing to society. You sit on social media and call for race revolt and such. when you can not even lift 20 pounds, have never fought a real fight or worked a real job in your entire life. Yet you like Lindy, a mongoloid who can not even walk without being told how. Demand respect and to be heard. You are not the doctor or ruby in this episode You are Lindy. You would feed people you claim to represent. to the slugs when they stoped being useful to you.
@@bobm4378 She literally calls the TARDIS Voodoo. Voodoo is an African religion. That's a clear implication that she's attacking his race and culture. Also watch Unleashed, they confirmed it was racism.
Huge Black Mirror vibes. And the racism reveal at the end was such a gut punch. Ncuti and Millie were hardly in this ep (outside of the little screens, at least) but their performances at the end were incredible. I actually thought all the actors firmly bodied this ep, even the ones playing awful characters
I cannot compute what I have just seen..I've rewatched that end several times now & my heart is still broken. Just look at the shell-shocked Ruby as well, she couldn’t even stand there any longer 💔 An unbelievable ending & performance by Ncuti. When the dot & slugs turned out not to be the monsters you thought they were going to be..🤯
I completely missed that the Doctor told Ricky about the number pad and how much he had to input. I thought he was standing there stalling for the slugs to arrive. It wasn’t until he started fighting the Dot off that I felt corrected. That he wasn’t going to betray her. Unfortunately not reciprocated
Yeah that was a good scene it messed with your preconceived cyberpunk/black mirror style. trope knowledge. You think the guy is working for the megacorp or something and that a megacorp is behind this and he is their enforcer and that lindy is the good guy. Particularly if you caught the land mine episode. Then she feeds him to the psyco AI with no mercy. That was a good bait and switch.
Ever since Ncuti was cast, I've wanted an episode where the Doctor's race got in the way of him saving the day (karma for every time the black companions were put into racist heavy scenarios). It's like when Thirteen started getting hindered in The Witchfinders because she was a woman for the first time (in her memory anyway). I will say, I applaud RTD for putting it in the futuristic, social-media influencer based episode instead of a historical episode. Throughout the first 35 minutes, Lindy is throwing so many microaggressions towards the Doctor (there's also not a single person of color in the whole bubble), but the Doctor stays focused on the task of saving whoever he can. It's almost like he doesn't recognize the microaggressions for what they are because he's never been the one to experience it. Then, at the end, when it is so brutally plain that the whole group is racist, he still tries to save the monsters, but they refused to be saved. Of course that's going to hurt, especially when the attack is so personal. And Ruby's immediate reaction of disgust and sadness is perfect. As a white child of a black parent, she would have witnessed microaggressions and racism towards her family and experienced her own white privilege.
Bad news snowflake. You are the vapid evil social media sjws/keyboard warriors this eposide is dunking on, Not the doctor, And true to that reality. and exactly, like the vapid weak worthless evil, MC of this episode. A dumb room tempture IQ forever child, who can not even walk without being told how. Far into their 20s. You think you are the good guys. YOU think YOU are the big heros, and the main characters. That's the funny part. You are not the doctor in this episode you vapid twitter snowflake. You are the Finetimers. You are the MC of this episode. You are as hateable as she and the others are. The fact that you don't see that is the best irony. It proves the episodes message correct. You are in reality. the weak pathetic little Social media addicted forever online, sjws, weak little entitled gen Z snowflakes. Who never worked a day in your life, never fought a physical fight, never suffered any kind of hardship. Posting political rhetoric on social media, as though you are fighters and revolutionary's. When the reality is, you are weak, and will either suffer and unalive. Or you will be come more evil than anyone can imagine. And worst of all for you. there is no doctor in real life to even attempt to save you. Nobody wants to save you, nobody will try to save you, Your erasure from society is a net win from society. You would be actively thrown to the slugs. Nobody would guide you. You don't deserve that. You deserve to be eaten.
I was so glad they did this episode, but was sad to see the doctor go through and experience such a thing for 1st time. He is literally walking a mile in his past companions shoes as you said. And Nucuti did and amazing job of showing that emotion that must of hit him experiencing it 1st hand rather just looking in. It's actually happening to him THE DOCTOR yet none of them care or listen to him. 👀 if I was him I'd be petty an take peak at future to see (or make sure) the bastards suffered for their small minded views. Next ep seems be a historical kinda thing. I wonder if they'll delve into his race being a factor if really going into such a time.
@@sarhahillsburg5142 the reality is there is no doctor to save people like that in the real world. The commen reaction to that ending was "killl them yourself" This is why the doctor is a FANTASY charictor. Humanity does not abide scum like the finetimers when the time for actual action and survivel comes. They are removed for the good of everyone else.
I keep noticing more moments of micro-aggression. From watching you guys, i finally noticed “is this something to do with you?” directed at the doctor, which I hadnt seen anyone mention yet
This is clearly gonna be one of the most divisive episodes of Doctor Who, but only divisive in that it'll weed out the fans who are clearly the intended recipient of this episode's critique - classists and racists. I've been on the fence about if this season was gonna deliver serious issues without pulling punches about the politics that Doctor Who has always stood for, but I never should have doubted RTD. The man is a visionary with the hearts and minds of the disenfranchised front and center in his ethos.
@@LeviPennington-vv2kqMaybe not all but there are quite a few who are down right racist and will never accept a black Dr Who. The characters’ racism is going to kill them. Forgive me if I remain dry eyed.

@@bkray26 she has male friends and she literally goes crazy when she sees Ricky September. I've seen two comments from you and it looks like you're trying to excuse the racism in both of them. please find another show to watch if this is how you think.
@@elektrasgf because they are her friends or her celebrities. She literally knows everything about Ricky. We can see in hindsight, she was racist. But you can't let a male who keeps sending dms and trying to call a girl and think it's not harassing her. Otherwise you are literally claiming any girl is racist if they don't want unsolicited dms. I think you need to have a long hard think about what you think you believe in. This probably isn't the right show for you, if you have no critical thinking skills tbh.
@@bkray26 lmao you're trying so hard. do you just run away when someone of the opposite gender tries to talk to you? he wasn't even harassing her. he warned her the same way ruby did, but Lindy was only aggressive towards the doctor. you're the one who lacks thinking skills if you actually believe blocking him right away was normal, especially in her world where literally everything happened in social media. and the things she said to him only made it worse. stop trying to excuse her racism and go touch some grass omg.
I feel like the Doctor trying to save them was a really good scene, no matter how ignorant they are, they don’t deserve to die and the Doctor really did try to save them.
I really had lukewarm feelings for a body of this episode but it was the ending that made the whole thing worth it. I rewatched that exchange between Pepper Bean and the Dcotor. And everything about it - the Doctor's reaction, the embarrassment of Ruby, the realization of what was happening - like me as someone having the same color as Ncuti, it was painful. It was frustrating. But it was powerful. Someone willing to help, shot down in the face of discrimination. It's wild. I'm watching it again as soon as I'm up because this one here... this one hit different.
@@Kazeromaruthe Fine time group were racist. If you watch again, there are little comments all through the episode. I did not put it all together until the end.
I liked the way she couldn't even walk normally without the tech, we've all seen those YT clips of people driving into rivers and so on because they're slaves to the sat nav....
@@williamthomas5884dude back off it’s Russel T Davis he is practically and old writer and he is not strict. He wrote and episode of a future of the top of the op of the 1 percent people. Young, thin, pretty, white, and rich. It’s good sci-fi commentary. What did you do when you have to save a bunch of jerks who were raised in a bibles of ideas and don’t what to leave their own bubble
...and now I'm just sat back waiting for the slew of youtube videos shouting about WOKEISM and MESSAGING and SIGNALING and completely missing how extraordinary those performances were whilst simultaneously proving the episode's point
The ending where it is revealed that the entire Finetime society is made up of Bowlestrek and Nerdrotic subscribers was great and very realistic/depressing.
You mentioned Blink. I was actually reminded of that episode in this one by virtue of the separation of the episode's 'protagonist' and the doctor. Obviously she was more of antagonist by story's end, but it did gives vibes of the structure of 'Blink'.
No lie, these 2 episodes ("73 Yards" and "Dot & Bubble") have felt like Black Mirror episodes. So much horror elements with biting commentary on top of it. I don't know how this episode/season will be overall examined after Ncuti's time is done as The Doctor, but, you can't say that RTD isn't giving this new Doctor and companion some damn great material, because Episodes 2-5 so far have been stellar work.
these where likely penned and filmed when black mirror was back at its peak with the new season. Im for it though i love black mirror and the wait for the next supernatual themed version is long.
Revealing Lindy to be a selfish racist coward also adds to the Black Mirror vibes, considering a lot of episodes end by revealing the protagonist to be a reprehensible individual (e.g. White Bear)
With this season’s stories deliberately steered into supernatural elements, this new sci-fi/fantasy mix in Doctor Who is pretty much the underlying algebra of Black Mirror stories. I'm not so sure that Doctor Who is borrowing from Black Mirror so much as deconstructing it into DW storytelling.
Lindy really went "ew old people", "ew poors", a short intermission to throw someone under the bus, and then went "ew black person". It's okay though, because probably none of them know how to start a fire.
Or have enough members to sustain a viable gene pool. Or how to treat illness, or hunt. Some or most plants might be toxic as well as lacking knowledge on potential local predators that may claim some of them. They basically just traded a guaranteed escape for a chance to play ARK: Survival Evolved irl.
Due to the music playing in the last couple of moments when Ncuti enters the TARDIS, I felt like it was hinting to a more darker side of his Doctor that we may see in the future. Probably wrong, but it’s just what I felt when listening to the music.
Im so glad this was posted so fast. I absolutely needed to get another viewpoint on this episode because that ending was so intense. The anguish of the Doctor and Ruby as the penny drops was heartbreaking. And poor Ricky September!
It seemed to me like he was just trying to spare her more heartache, for the moment. I think if anyone would've gone with the Doctor it would've been him.
@@OneGaurdianHe didn’t seem as conditioned into the way of life in their society as Lindy and the others as he seemed to function fine without the dot and bubble and had an interest in learning, so there’s a chance he may not have subscribed completely to their views on race as well. If nothing else he had the most potential to rise above it and showed some level of decency, so I’m hesitant to write the character off completely as he never had the choice at the end. Also don’t recall him doing or saying any problematic things but I could have missed something.
I’m so happy with this season so far. I love Ruby- she actually adds value the way companions are supposed to… the Doctor is so well cast and those classic RTD speeches and social commentaries are back… I liked Jodie’s Doctor but those few seasons felt like a different show to me. This season feels like Doctor Who again and I’m so excited!
You can prefer the other doctors and still have some reluctance with Ncuti as our new doctor, but it is undeniable that for now the consistency and level of writing is better than the previous 2 seasons
I did have some doubts after the Chibnall era was so disappointing but this season has been great so far and really enjoying the new Doctor. There are parallels with Jodie's first season with a new Doctor and companions and no classic villains but this is how you do it.
@@XanderHarris1023thing is, Chibnall has written well for Jodie in the past. Her performance in Broadchurch is heartbreaking and that was written by him, sci-fi just wasn’t his genre
I am stuck on the idea that "Homeworld" was just a planet that served as the gated space community for the super-rich of the future. The bottom 99.9% of the human race is still doing just fine and will probably be better off with the upper class gone,
No need to worry: they were not human...(if you watch while Lindy is walking through the streets wittering about her wardrobe and the bubble directs her to walk around the person laying on the street who then gets dragged away: the streak of blood she leaves is bluish-green.)
11:11 some funny moments. Vanessa saying, “B….”, then “that’s F’d up”, then your reaction to the guy getting sniped. That last moment for him was so unexpected. Pretty good episode. I’m with Robert. Hated her from the start. Definitely made for an interesting story that she was not redeemable.
Have you read Lord of the flies, or seen the film, no spoilers but a social commentary. Lord of the Flies is the 1954 debut novel of British author William Golding. The plot concerns a group of British boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island and their disastrous attempts to govern themselves. The novel's themes include morality, leadership, and the tension between civility and chaos.
I watched it and then was confused at the ending and did not quite get it. Then I watched it again and saw all the subtle racist comments. I was actually angry after watching it a second time. More mad at the assumed white privilege and assumption of superiority over others. Others may disagree, but this was an excellent episode. It makes you see past everyday nuance to see what is really happening.
Well technically the angels were never as bad as you would think if you get touched your sent back away from danger and in another time just don't get touched again and you should live a good life
@@FlamingoshootsMCI dunno if I’d call that good. Going with the racism angle from this episode, all it would take is a Weeping Angel touching a black man and sending him to the times of slavery for them to become some of the most horrid beings in the universe
The Doctor might still be able to save most of them if he just takes the TARDIS into the forest two or three days later. I'm sure once they're starving and have seen a couple of their friends eaten by wild animals they'd be more receptive to his offer of a ride.
Yikes, just imagine how the Finetimers would’ve reacted to learning about the Time Lords. A race that can basically change their skin color on a whim? They’d be calling for their extermination!
Also, they made Ricky September act like the Doctor would to show how much more trusting Lindy is because he’s white, as opposed to our doctor who she doesn’t trust.
I've seen a lot of "This episode is anti social media" NO. It's about how being in your own bubble where everything looks and sounds the same is dangerous. Literally.
Anyone remember ninth doctor's rant at the imprisoned dalek? If i had a dollar for each time a doctor's defineing moment had a bit of spit escape, id have two dollars. Not a lot etc.
I can't believe you want to see these characters return 😂 I'd be more than happy to never see or hear about them again and just assume they got eaten by a giant leech or something
I don't at all agree with racism I find it disgusting but we shouldn't dictate people's opinions and beliefs either otherwise you be no better than them there has to be a balance in society you shouldn't wish people dead or cancel them because we have a different opinions to them both sides should listen to people's points in view.
This episode is so good it shows how nasty racism is and shows how talented Ncuti is and it’s such a powerful scene for the doctor despite there views on him he still wants to save them such a great episode
I was taken completely by shock at the end. I missed all the clues and nuances left along the way. Not sure if its cause of seeing all the same shade of people and colours blinded me to how the doctor stood out. But the doctor always stands out so I missed that 100%. And I am not even white and I did not note it, but it did makes me think about how easy it is to live in a bubble. You guys are right, the AI was doing the universe a favour by wiping these so very vapid, so entirely entitled, yet so blantently bigoted airheads (hairheads). RIP RIcky. I spent the entire time thinking about how he could be so good at being when others could not even walk without aid. He was a real MVP.
There were soooo many overt and subtle signs of racism scattered throughout the episode: 1. Lindy was revolted and blocked the Doctor when he first appeared on her feed. 2. Lindy didnt block Ruby. She was more receptive to Ruby when she appeared on her feed. Lindy spoke to Ruby and believed her over the Doctor. 3. When the Doctor appeared for the second time on her feed, Lindy asked him if the monsters "have something to do with you" (she didnt ask Ruby this, just the Doctor) 4. Lindy told her groupcall to listen to the Doctor and that "i know this is wrong and after this is all over he will be so disciplined, i cant wait, and he doesn't look as atupid as he looks" (of course due to the color of his skin) 5. No person of color lived in Finetime 6. Lindy was shocked to learn that Ruby and the Doctor were in the same room together in such close proximity 7. Lindy told the Doctor "Didnt I block you? I knew it. I just thought you looked the same, but you're the same person I blocked. I was so right to hate you." (Implying all black people look the same) 8. When they met, Lindy told Ruby and the Doctor "Gosh, you two, this is strange." (meaning a white and black person working together) 9. And a few more microagressions towards the Doctor before they met in the final scene AND in the final scene where the racism got blatant.
Something felt off the whole episode and I couldn't put my finger on it until the very end reveal. The horror of the monsters and the shocking nature of their social media use were total distractions from the real horrors and micro-agressions... Amazing episode!
(I was the 500th Like!) THANKS for this!!!! This episode breaks two rules of the show. First rule, established in Classic and continuing in Nu: collective racism/prejudice must be overcome for our planet to survive. Second rule, established in Nu: individual prejudice is something to be frowned on but will be overcome one day. (TEARING SOUND AS RTD RIPS UP THOSE RULES :) ) WOW....Um, gee.... Who is RTD going after? Anti-immigration movements in Europe? The Right worldwide, including in America? The Doctor Who anti-woke crowd? Everyone? Although the Jordan Peele/"Black Mirror" crowd will not be losing sleep over this, I deeply appreciate RTD's willingness to put up a very big finger at people who don't like his direction. This is very different from his first, more subtle DW take. There will be a lot of criticism of Ncuti crying *again.* But from the point of view of this American, this cry is more out of the tradition of 19th-century Frederick Douglass than a 20th-century British-created Time Lord, recreated in this century to great impact.
I dont think so.. it is directed at those who ONLY use a phone, only on online forums, y'now , F and W ... if you are not online you are not worth it...
This is another one of those episodes I want to rewatch already. It makes sense she immediately swiped on The Doctor when he was trying to help her at first. It took Ruby bugging her just to get the girl to accept help. There’s probably other clues I missed. A fantastic moment for Ncuti as The Doctor at the end. This does remind me of the 10th Doctor begging Davros to accept his help at the end of S4. The 15th Doctor here takes it a step further by asking the racist kids if they would ALLOW him to save him. Told them they could think anything they want. He would DO anything they want. The Doctor was ready to help people who think he’s scum in any way possible. Even if it meant humiliating himself.
The end of this episode I definitely feel like has been the most bitter for Ncuti’s Doctor so far, when you think how many victories he’s had up to that point (banishing both The Toymaker & Maestro, saving both Ruby from the goblins and the bogeyman, stopping Villengard & the war on Kastarion 3), it must have been absolutely soul-crushing for him to feel like he’s well & truly lost for the first time since bi-generating & having that period of self-healing, especially as well over something so simple & shallow like how he looks
The last scene I agree definitely ncuti doctor moment considering this was his first day filming for Dr who he knocked it out of the park fantastic episode
Ricky being so Bowie and Doctor coded but white is definitely intentional. Lindy happily accepted his help when she was downright offensive to Doc in almost every scene from the beginning of the episode. (It's been very telling to see across the internet who thought the final scene's more direct racism was a twist and who could tell on first watch that it wasn't, with the constant steady flow of setup and foreshadowing) I get why people would ahead of time assume the episode would be some kind of vapid Gen Z on their phones critique from a 60 year old writer, that makes sense, but i hope after watching it's clear to everyone that's not at all what it is about. Bubble in the sense of being literally blinded by privilege, (Russell T Davies said so himself in the BTS, that he was curious how many minutes it would take viewers to realize that Finetime only had white inhabitants. 10 minutes? 15 minutes? all the way to the end? and if it took people a while, he hoped everyone would ask themselves why?) and in the sense of white supremacist echo chambers created by tech companies with equally racist algorithms, not as in the sense of branding a generation
The series is always having characters poking jabs at the doctor in a light hearted joking way so even long time fans don't realize what's actually going on the first time they watch the episode.
they've got no skills, no equipment, no supplies, and oh, there's the slugs after them. the people who can't even walk without help are dead in a few days tops. and they'd still rather take their chances than let the Doctor help them - just because he's "not one of them". Ncuti absolutely nailed it; if it were almost any of the other Doctors, the whole story would have ended better for the FineTime kids.
For me it was the worst/best day of her life comment. Before that I disliked how rude she was being, but I can tolerate a certain level of brattiness. That scene was the one where I starting thinking that no, she's just a genuinely bad person.
OOF..... I (like many others) totally despised Lindy Pepper-Bean!!! 😡 And knowing how the episode turned out, I don't even feel ashamed to admit, that I laughed so hard, just out of pure "joy", when she walked into that pole! 🤣 And to be clear : I never laugh, when I see people get hurt!!
Look at everything going on in the world today.” -Russell T Davies (speaking about this episode)
heres hints all through the episode about the finetime people being racist, like them saying it was his duty to save them, or despite his looks hes smart, and thinking after blocking him that they just "looked the same", also when he hacked into the system she could have used any other word but she used punished, like how an owner puinishes a slave, and calling the tardis voodoo, also being disgusted that the doctor and ruby were in the same room
they didnt go with the doctor because hes a black pilot, thats why he was mad than sad and ruby walked away at the end before the doctor , she understood what was going on and that he couldn't change there minds, despite there prejudice he still wants to help people thats why he had that breakdown he was mad then sad
and he said security wouldn't even let him into the dome. i'm guessing they wouldn't let ruby in because she was with him
It was also suspicious that all of the Finetime residents were white people
@@IotaOmicron825 most likely they are just terrible people I would have let them all die but the doctor is a good person and looks past the prejudice against him cuz he wants to help people he at least have them a chance
Her shock at Ruby and The Doctor being in the SAME ROOM really does take on a whole new meaning.
At first I thought Ricky might turn out to be a bad guy.... turns out he was probably, sadly, the only one worth saving. 😢
Happily though, I think they all got "slugged" in the woods, so....happy tears for that! 😂
the fact that the last scene was Ncuti's first day as the Doctor is crazy
Incredible. Last week was Millie’s first day on set.
He shouts and screams for no apparent reason. Why didn't he try and convince the people before the silly bitch got into the room about his attempts to rescue them it makes no sense yet again.
Explains why he was absent for most of the episode.
@@flaggerify Not completly. Last week and this week had shedule problems with his filming for the new season of "Sex education"
So they coupled a few minutes together, just to have the Doctor for context. But, they did it well, jod job.
@@thomasnieswandt8805 Not sure. Two in a row for a new Doctor is not good.
Would you love it if the Doctor was white, and all the kids black? No, get a grip
As soon as they drank the wild water they all got sick and the predators put them out of their misery. I think the slugs where a weapon and they had a list but given by who?
They didn't really get away. They are going to the wild lands and they will die there, like the Doctor said they would.

Absolute racism however the doctor should have told them to watch get in the Tardis and disappear and come back.

Would you be saying that if all the Finetime people were black, and they wouldnt go with the Dr if he was white in this regeneration? No
Ncuti gave an absolutely incredible performance in the last few minutes of this episode.
I assume Ricky was a massive racist also, since it was a colony of white supremacists
Honestly this was probably my least favorite episode of the season but man I loved that ending.
How the hell can you give that absolute trash 9. Pure amateur trash
This felt like Ncuti’s I Am The Doctor moment for me. It’s crazy to know that this was his first episode to record!
Doctor Who legend William Russell passed yesterday. He was by far one of the best companions the Doctor has ever had. Rip William Russell 1924-2024

At the end of the day, Lindy was the true monster. She basically sold out Ricky September and snubbed The Doctor because of his skin color 😣
You mentioned Blink. I was actually reminded of that episode in this one by virtue of the separation of the episode's 'protagonist' and the doctor. Obviously she was more of antagonist by story's end, but it did gives vibes of the structure of 'Blink'.
I did think about that too. It was like "What if Blink ... but Sally Sparrow was utterly awful."
I love how Robert's hatred of Lindy just becomes even more justified as the episode goes on lol
That "awesome Doctor moment" was Ncuti's first scene in the series.

Robert was right from the beginning!!!! Great reaction guys!!!
"you can't change your skin tone! Basic biology!"
I GOTTA get “Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” on my Spotify playlist 😁
Vanessa had the exact same response I had when Lindy ratted out Ricky.
Also, they made Ricky September act like the Doctor would to show how much more trusting Lindy is because he’s white, as opposed to our doctor who she doesn’t trust.
I think that this episode just proves the idea that DW reflects the era it's made. Even the Doctor can't deal with current times
"Late To The Party" is definitely a misnomer at the moment!
We'd rather see them get eaten.
@@LatetothePartysuch hatred it’s just sad, yes they have horrible beliefs but instead of condemning them for it try and change them 😂 i mean come on
@@Caveqpif anything that life has taught me,some people just don't change, they just need to be punished😅
@@Caveqphatred takes years to unlearn
I don't at all agree with racism I find it disgusting but we shouldn't dictate people's opinions and beliefs either otherwise you be no better than them there has to be a balance in society you shouldn't wish people dead or cancel them because we have a different opinions to them both sides should listen to people's points in view.
This episode is so good it shows how nasty racism is and shows how talented Ncuti is and it’s such a powerful scene for the doctor despite there views on him he still wants to save them such a great episode
This was Blink level good. Finally a 100% solid episode. THIS needed to be the season opener!!!
Last 2 have been top notch.
They weren't being entitled in that moment. They didn't want to go with The Doctor because he's Black.
There were soooo many overt and subtle signs of racism scattered throughout the episode:
1. Lindy was revolted and blocked the Doctor when he first appeared on her feed.
2. Lindy didnt block Ruby. She was more receptive to Ruby when she appeared on her feed. Lindy spoke to Ruby and believed her over the Doctor.
3. When the Doctor appeared for the second time on her feed, Lindy asked him if the monsters "have something to do with you" (she didnt ask Ruby this, just the Doctor)
4. Lindy told her groupcall to listen to the Doctor and that "i know this is wrong and after this is all over he will be so disciplined, i cant wait, and he doesn't look as atupid as he looks" (of course due to the color of his skin)
5. No person of color lived in Finetime
6. Lindy was shocked to learn that Ruby and the Doctor were in the same room together in such close proximity
7. Lindy told the Doctor "Didnt I block you? I knew it. I just thought you looked the same, but you're the same person I blocked. I was so right to hate you." (Implying all black people look the same)
8. When they met, Lindy told Ruby and the Doctor "Gosh, you two, this is strange." (meaning a white and black person working together)
Right... so we now know the dots were 100% correct in their actions.
It was in that final act that the people of Finetime revealed to be the real monsters of the story.
Thank you both for existing
Nctui's performance was beautiful! There's always a twist at the end!
This was a dark episode but I think it was my favorite episode of the season so far.
(I was the 500th Like!)
THANKS for this!!!! This episode breaks two rules of the show. First rule, established in Classic and continuing in Nu: collective racism/prejudice must be overcome for our planet to survive. Second rule, established in Nu: individual prejudice is something to be frowned on but will be overcome one day.
(TEARING SOUND AS RTD RIPS UP THOSE RULES :) )
WOW....Um, gee....

Sometimes you can judge a book by it's cover, no matter how hard you try not to. Really loving your reaction to this new series.
Brilliant analysis and review guys, glad I found your channel.
Excellent twist where we find out who the true villain is. This and 73 Yards have been outstanding episodes
Good story tonight! It was definitely better than last week’s episode. Gosh the ending was crushing
Another great episode! Btw didn't mention it on last episode love Vanessa's hair! Looks so pretty 😍
Pretty much sums up my experience working with gen-Zers
they've got no skills, no equipment, no supplies, and oh, there's the slugs after them. the people who can't even walk without help are dead in a few days tops. and they'd still rather take their chances than let the Doctor help them - just because he's "not one of them". Ncuti absolutely nailed it; if it were almost any of the other Doctors, the whole story would have ended better for the FineTime kids.
The slugs were the real heroes of the episode.
This episode of Who has stayed with me since it aired. Hit me right in the gut.
Ngl I started disliking lindy after Ricky died, cause he was helping her and then she threw him under the bus
You were late to that party. Most of us hated her from the start 😂
@@cooluncle4242 yeah I kinda was but I was 50% asleep when watching this at midnight
I'm worried if they are okay. 😟 To be honest, I felt more worried, if the POLE was okay! 😅
Anyway : When they were talking about that Lindy's mummy "had gone to the sky", I just felt like "Yup... She was uploaded to the big cloud. 😏 ".
It's not usual for me, to be this "cynical" - but Lindy, apparently, brought the worst side of my personality forward. 🙄😇😅
yes, online so much you forgot how to walk!!
This is by far a great start to the season in a while!
There's only 3 episodes left. Welcome to modern times. It sucks.
Sucks for those with surnames Q to Z! Even the Doctor didn't try to save them!
He begged them to let him save them, and they turned their backs.
And they were all wiped out by an angry squirrel.
