  • This will show you how to wire a VW Alternator when converting over from a Generator. Don't let it intimidate you, it is very simple. I am not a mechanic so if I can do it, so can you.

    Great tip on the AlumiConn Wire Connector! No fuss and no shopping around for different gauge wire connectors. Love it!

    Great, thanks. I just got a new inbuilt regulator alternator for my beetle. The old alternator started putting out 17 to 19 volts at the battery. I should of fitted a new alternator when I put my new engine in. I just stripped the old one off my 1500 cc to my new 1916cc rebuild. It was not up to the extra RPM. Thanks for the wiring hints.

    So the “blue” wire which is green is supposed to have 12v when the key switch is on? And while engine is running?

      Hello to be honest I don’t remember if it’s supposed to be showing 12 volts I just know that it goes to your warning light on dashboard to let you know something is not working right with your alternator like belt loose, or broken, or just simply not charging. I haven’t worked on mine in years cause floor pan is gone and I was always learning on the fly.

    Do the three red wires stay hot as well? When the key is off.

    • @robotbroken
      @robotbroken 5 лет назад +1

      Yes!
      The three Red Wires that were connected together:
      1) connects to the positive clamp on the battery
      2) connects to the large post (B+) on the Alternator
      3) goes to the front of the car and connects to Headlight Switch,
      Ignition Switch or positive side of the Fuse Box (#30 Terminal)

    Is the alternator hot wire stay hot all the time even with the key off?

    • @robotbroken
      @robotbroken 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, the large post on the alternator is in direct connection to the positive battery terminal.
      The large alternator post should be covered with a rubber boot to avoid shorting for when working in the area with metal tools.

    By repeating "Blue" wire instead of "Green" is confusing people. 1/4" female spade and solder with plastic removed, then shrink tube. You split harness can be tapped just use a dab of black weatherstrip adhesive on end to hold together. Split harness and dielectric grease is sold at home improvement stores for half the cost. Use dielectric grease on all terminals in connectors including bulbs to keep moisture off. Way less problems with no voltage drop due to resistance. And today (Dec 2022) with LED's used everywhere, they can not function correctly with any voltage drop as they pull under 0.030 amps and way less voltage, so protect them. It is like changing turn signals to LED, you need an electronic flasher, as conventional heater type won't flash because of low current.
    Alternator produces B+ when running, key on has B+ so charge lamp goes out (B+ with B+ = no light) When alternator quits working or off, the key is on, the regulator or center connection of "Y-Connect) stator go to ground. This completes the circuit and bulb comes on. Imports from Japan call this the "Neutral" terminal or Neuter, labeled "L". But this is a bug. Remove plastic on single connectors, Solder, shrink tube and dab of dielectric grease.

      Thank you so much. I’m definitely no mechanic. I am always about learning. I totally learned what I did on the fly and it all works excellent to this day no problems. I would definitely liked to know this easier method. I am honored that you are certified and watched my video on how I did it. I am always about learning and trying to get people not intimidated on doing different things on their own and feel good about it. Take care and thank you again for this information.

      @@HowYouCanDoItToo Certified doesn't mean much as guys told me of guy that hired on and spent 3 days on intermittent wipers.
      Mine came after they started in 72 (Google It) but service mgr ask 7 guys in VW, Porsche and Datsun dealer. No one was interested. Customer pay was $24 per hour and most techs earned $6.50 flat rate. Boss offered a nickel per test that I passed & I could use $0.40 extra! Two months later, went to college and 60 questions per test in 8 categories. WoW! The proctor was asleep and I was last. Turned in last test and forgot. 3 months past and mgr called me to his office and racked my brain thinking I did something wrong. The owner, service director and mgr were all in office and thought I killed someone. They opened package and had patches, plaque, cards, wall display. Then I was told that I had the second highest score in the nation of all test & given a $100 check. Now, remember, a TV in a console came with Hi-Fi Stereo radio on one side and record player on other with TV in middle with doors to hide cost $110. I was speechless & scared when walked in, just shook hands & smiled for photos. It took 3 minutes for everyone in the shop to call me "Hot-Shot", "Hollywood", even cheater as I had answers on legs! What, I forgot and never studied. They have you come back every five years to re-cert, but only half the questions.
      Crazy thinking back as questions included front drum questions!
      Like engine performance; section
      Customer has hesitation when stepping on gas. Tech A says Fuel pump is likely the cause. Tech B says vacuum advance is ruptured.
      Who is right? A: Tech A. B: Tech B.
      C: Both Tech A & B. D: Neither.
      Multiple choice X 60 for one test or category. Answer: Tech B. Easy...right?
      Test was put together by a board of current professionals, retired professionals and engineers.
      Originally called; National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, soon shorten to ASE. I guess it was just a way to weed out bad techs or Elevate or Raise technicians to level to paying field.
      Technology keeps changes and I have no clue on the VW engine + systems. But most work the same way. Believe it or not, but in 1976, only Datsun/Nissan 280Z & Cadillac Seville had multiport fuel injection. Just two! Everything else used CIS (Constant Injection System) with air plate down or up, or mechanical like Mercedes Benz or Corvettes Hilborn. Then in 84, Buick introduced "Sequential Fuel Injection". This changed the world as it allowed mid-fire detection.
      Crank sensor tells the ECM which pair of pistons are at TDC. The cam sensor tells which one is on the power stroke. So now, using software can set PO300 by comparing speed increase pattern against speed deceleration pattern. Then if misfire last long enough to decide which cylinder is on power stroke, it can figure out which cylinder like #5. So, PO305.
      It is part of me I take to the grave with me as if I no I have 5 fingers!

    you didn't explain the 3 red wires... you said one went to the battery and I assume 1 went to the alternator but where does the 3rd red wire come from or go to?

      Hello, I am only showing how to bypass the regulator and hook up the alternator. Are you asking cause you don't have 3 red wires. I am not a mechanic, but if you have 3 red wires and hook them up like the video shows. Mine works awesome. I only know that I was told to hook up the three red wires at the regulator to bypass it cause your Alternator has the built in regulator. I'm sorry if I'm not answering your question correctly. I am only assuming it might go to your fuse box or starter solenoid but not sure. I try to help the best way not being a mechanic. Take care...Tony

      sorry about the confusion but the car I have is missing a lot of it's wiring... I don't know what previous owners plans were but it looks like I will have to do a complete wire job... just thought you could shed some light on my dilemma... I'll figure it out... thanks any way...

      Hello, I wish I could see a picture of how you got it hooked up. Make sure none of your connections are touching each other. I am assuming that if the alternator and fan is turning. You are saying your starter is what is in-gauging. Re-trace your wiring and check at your starer that wires are not touching each other. Please let me know after you do that.
