Many people start off teaching. When I moved to Bangkok at 23, I taught for a few years before moving on to other things. This last year my wife joined a local trail running group and they do regular weekly training runs in the mountains of Chiang Rai from 20 to 50 kilometers. Once you get into that world you find a huge number of races all over Thailand. Unfortunately I can no longer keep up with her so focus more on the gym but I am amazed the distances they do.
Yes teaching in Thailand or Asia is a great stepping stone and escape from the collapse of the western world. Most people start off with budgets under 50k per month ... this was more realistic 8 years ago ... also we need to take inflation into consideration and the high costs of phuket.
This is a bit out if context as he discussing when he first came 8 years ago or so ... many English teachers entered Thailand making 30k a month ... 12k back then was expensive.
