- With memories of a sunken narrowboat in our heads, we finally face our demons and tackle the deep Stenson Lock on the Trent & Mersey Canal as we take our narrowboat back home to Mercia Marina, where our narrowboat journey began with life aboard our tiny floating home.

Hello! We're Caroline and Pete, and in 2021, after 10 years living in Texas, we sold up and moved back home to the UK to live full time aboard a 60ft narrowboat with our West Highland Terriers! Join us in our day to day life as we continuously cruise the canals and rivers of the UK. All of the ups, and the downs and everything in between!
If you would like to support our channel you can buy us a coffee or the westies some treats here www.buymeacoff... (we are saving up for new audio equipment!)

Exploring times past. A great piece of our heritage. Will times past become times present as the world fall apart. God Bless your work of keeping the past alive.
Thank you Gerard. The history of the canal network never fails to astound us 😊
Aww lovely to see your children. That lock gave us food for thought. Better get some training in 😅 xxx
We have learnt so much now! I think it being so close to where we launched, and so deep and the sinking was so recent I got a bit freaked out 😂
You took some great photos! Thanks for sharing them. It was truly nice to meet your children.
So glad you enjoyed it Shirley! It was lovely to have Sophie and Alex to visit the boat 😊
Thank you, so lovely well done we do appreciate your vlog 🙏✝️🙏🇨🇦
That’s so lovely to hear James 😊
Hi Pete and Caroline. It must have been wonderful to introduce your children to the boat that first time. I bet the pups were glad to see them and vice versa. Your vlogs have such a unique look and feel to them. About that sunken nb: how did it sink in a lock? Who got it out of there and how did they do it? How are the cakes from Holly? I watch their vlogs, too. Cute couple with adorable William. Any way, be well and have a good Mothers Day this weekend. Leigh
Hi Leigh! It was just lovely having Alex and Sophie finally visit the boat after they had seen it on FaceTime so often, and they loved seeing all the dogs again! It was definitely mutual! Apparently that boat sunk as there is quite a fierce flow of water into the lock if you don’t open the paddles slowly, and it went in the front of the boat and sank it quickly. So very sad. Every cake we have had from Holly the Cafe Boat had been so yummy! Jo and Vic and William are just as lovely in real life as on their wonderful videos ❤️🍰
Aww, your children are so like you !
😊 thank you
Fab vlog and great to see Alrewas again and where you where a few weeks ago. Lovely family pic with Alex and Sophie. Bet they loved the boat when they saw it ‘in the flesh’. Seeing sunken boats is horrible isn’t it? One of the worst things to see I think.
See you soon 😘 xxx
Sunken boats are always such a sad sight as you know it’s someone’s home 😞. It was so lovely having Alex and Sophie to visit and for them to see the boat for real!! See you very soon xxx
Lovely vlog! We’re doing something very similar, we’re going back to the marina where we started from 🥰 well done for conquering that lock! See you soon! xx 😘
It’s lovely going back to all those memories and friends. Can’t wait to see you VERY SOON! ❤️
Thank you for such a wonderful vlog, poetic and interesting! Love the history parts in it, lovely kids you have 😊🩵💙👏
That’s so lovely to hear Claudia. Thank you for your wonderful comments 😊
Oh my goodness! This is when we saw you in Mercia last summer. We left the same day I think! What a wonderful year we have both had! Great video as always 😊👍🏼
So much has happened in the last year hasn’t it! What great stories we have to tell now. Will you be at Crick this year? 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard certainly has been a busy but lovely year! I’m afraid we won’t be at Crick, meeting friends in Oxford that weekend. Hopefully catch up soon xx
Stenson Deep is fine, you just take the same level of care as you would in any lock. Good to see our old stomping ground. We moored at Mercia in 2010/11 when we first bought our boat. A very well run set up. No pub back then but we still loved it there.
We loved our short time at Mercia too when we launched. And we have been back a few times since then too. Such a great community there and as you say, very well run with lovely office staff. That always makes all the difference. I now know Stenson lock is fine and now have a chuckle that I was so obsessed with not turning left out of the marina when we first launched! The sunken boat was too recent for me to feel relaxed, but now I know that can happen anywhere for all sorts of reasons. It’s a steep learning curve at the start isn’t it 😊
We had hired a good few times prior to buying and the year before we bought did the Leicester Ring so we knew that section of the T&M quite well so we didn't feel too daunted when we first had our own boat TBH.@@onedaymoreaboard
We were those crazy people that jumped right in to boat ownership with no experience other than a one day party boat hire (those boats we now avoid!) and a half hour trip boat to Blisworth Tunnel and back between us! But thankfully its all worked out well 😊
Stunning boat. Wow.
Thanks 😊
What a wonderful video. Also makes me realise what a mistake I made. I bought a Fairline targa sports boat 34 ft with 400 hp. It just drank money from the day I bought it. My 2nd option was a Barge like yours. Too late now the money pit was soon emptied.
Reagards.
Steve.
Glad you enjoyed it! So sorry about your own boat story. We have been so lucky with ours and it’s been a great 18 months so far with only a few hiccups. Thanks for watching 😊
Great family picture ❤ where did that year dissappear to? Nice your confidence has grown so much when maneuvering One Day More 😊
Thanks so much! If has been such a fast and wonderful year full of adventures 😊
Awwww love Mercia. Only been there once and almost bought a new boat there. Wish I had now. Lol. Great vlog. Every best wish. ❤
Thanks so much! We love going back to Mercia every now and again 😊
Thank you for the video. Hope the weather is good for the both of you (and the puppies). Spring is here, leaves are out and some flowers blooming. 70s to 80's this week. Take care, hope the family and you are doing well.
You’re so welcome Tom! I am sure you are glad for the spring weather and temperatures. Their are lambs in the fields and duckling, cygnets and goslings are beginning to hatch. It’s so lovely to see 😊
I love your Vlogs. Where in the USA do your kids live ? I have put Shardlow on my list of places to visit next time I come to the UK. Did you previously live in the states ? I also follow Holly the Cafe Boat and Julie and Martin ! Small world .
We are good friends with the lovely Julie and Martin after a wonderful winter with them on the Llangollen canal. We lived close to Houston, TX for 10 years before we moved back home to the UK in 2021. Sophie lives in Madison, WI and Alex moved to the UK recently. It was so lovely to have them stay on the boat 😊
Great family photo at the end. Do the children think you are crazy for moving onto a narrowboat? My wife and I have just retired and I know our children would have some comments if we took off on such a lark. We would have to take a few of the grand kids with us.
Thank you! From the start they have been supportive of our crazy idea, and even more so now they have seen us living and enjoying this life so much. It’s a big talking point with their friends! And it’s funny that some of their friends know us on social media without realising we are their parents! ‘OMG they are the people who live on the boat with the westies, I follow them!’ That’s what they hear quite often 😂
Love your vlogs, but why so far behind?
Thanks so much John. We didn’t actually start putting vlogs out until 6 months into our boating life aboard, so we’ve been playing catch up ever since! It’s been suggested that we cut out sections of footage so that we are more up to date, but one of the main reasons we started recording our travels was for our own diary, so that’s not really an option. We are doing our best to catch up and maybe one day we will, but for now we will be showing lambs and ducklings in November, and snow and ice in June 😂 Hope you still enjoy the videos though 😊
