One of the French Polynesia Leeward group of Islands is the Island of Bora Bora. The Island features an extinct volcano at its center which rises to two peaks called Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu.
The Island is nestled on the waters about 230 kilometers (143 miles) northwest of Papeete. It is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef.
During the Second World War, United States chose Bora Bora as a supply outpost for its South Pacific Fleet. It acted as an oil depot, airstrip, seaplane base, and defensive fortifications were constructed around it.
Bora Bora's St. Regis Resort was the scene where the movie 'Couples Retreat' was shot. It appeared on screen as the Eden Resort.
