- Jew in the City was created to counter stereotypes that non-Orthodox Jews have about the Orthodox community, but several years into our work, we discovered that some of the ex-hasidic community had been following us and wanted to connect with the kind of Orthodoxy we were showing. I lived in NY for a year and a half and loved my interaction with Orthodox Jews. I was a Catholic nun at the time. Because my religious tradition grew out of Judaism I've tried to educate myself. Offerings solutions instead of judgment will go a very long way to drawing people back to their roots. This project makes my heart happy for your community. Many blessings!

Hi Jew in the city. I think it's just important to mention that not all Hasidic/ charedi Jews are extremists. Although there are deffinately some that are we can't paint the whole community as such. I myself don't like labels I just consider myself Orthodox. However I have many Hasidic friends who are very pro science and amazing people. Every religion will have extremists.
Of COURSE not all charedi/hasidic Jews are extremists. As I said in my message -the disenfranchised of the community approached us for help. Most in the community are living happy lives.

After the recent release of Netflix's documentary "One Of Us" about those who leave Hasidism and/or fall of the derech, this Project Makom promo couldn't have come sooner. It's awesome to see that JITC is helping keep Jews Jewish, and even more so, Torah observant.
WOW! this sounds like a fantastic group! I am not of the Jewish faith, but if I was, this would definately be an organization I would join.

So glad this movement exists. This is a more positive alternative than Footsteps. All Jews wherever we are on the spectrum of observance need chizuk. That's why I enjoy your videos and your posts on social media
I’m a secular Jew, (raised modern orthodox from a Jewish dad and a Korean Convert mom). Even though we were modern orthodox we lived in a few Hasidic communities, most people were nice and friendly, but some were radical extremists who could care less.
I might describe myself as a secular Jew but I still keep the sabbath, go to a temple, celebrate the holidays and technically I’m kosher (I’m vegetarian).
It’s very sad to see Jews leave Judaism as a whole and have 0 connection to Judaism, not pass it on to their kids, and so on.
Really like the program that you’re doing and wish you the best in helping Jewish youth!

Can someone explain the difference between Hasid Jews and Orthodox Jews?
Hasidic Jews are a type of Orthodox Jews. Orthodoxy is basically all there was until a couple hundred years ago when progressive movements started coming out. But within the Orthodox world, there has always been a diversity of groups. Some were more mystical, some were more intellectual, some believed in staying separate from the world, some believed more in mixing with the world in as much as it is kosher/appropriate. The hasidic tradition began in Europe a couple hundred years ago when there were peasants who were not scholars and were lacking spiritual connection. The leader, the Baal Shem Tov, showed these peasants that they could connect to God through song and dance and prayer. Not every man in a black hat is a hasid but basically all hasidic men where black or fur hats. Within the hasidic movement there is a range of more modern and more ultra.
