You might have actually been the victim of a byte flip. 1024 is 2 to the power of 10. Entirely possible for cosmic radiation to have done done that to you. There are other examples of this happening in gaming.
I'd actually speculate that the lost 1024 pokos were the result of an overflow error. The game probably tracks enemy corpses by how many points they are worth (IE: 500 corpses * 1 poko = 500 pokos, 100 corpses * 5 pokos = 500 pokos). He probably had an overflow on the 1-point-enemies, which is why he didn't get a complete reset of the pokos earned in the cave.
It probably just overflowed a variable (like a 16 bit integer) because he collected so many metites at the end, that it slightly corrupted the save after exiting the cave
Im on my first playthrough and I've been proceastinating going into the wistful wild but watching your series made me actually do it, i was on day 33 for a week and now im on day 38
Heff: "It doesn't matter to me how many blues we lose."
Water Wraith: "I'll take that as consent!"
8:00 This was the equivalent of jaywalking on the freeway with a class of kindergarteners
more like instructing the kindergarteners to walk in front of a freight train
"Blue pikmin lives mean nothing to us anymore"
Water Wraith: "Bonjour"

Imagine the universe literally stealing from you.
if this is true that would be hilarious

An overflow wouldn't change a number by 1024, overflows are by powers of 2 of 8x or 8x-1. Assuming 8 bit bytes at least.

This series is great but I can’t believe you overwrote your Mario Superstar Baseball save file for it. That game is awesome.

Just saying if you haven't figured it out pikmin don't need to be in anybody's squad or near the ship to go into the next floor of a cave
