I love the way you blended the soft and hard and I rewatch you to understand your beautiful talented painting with a difficult medium I’m use to oil but wanted to learn water and thank you for your information.

I used to do oils as well.
But I had an injury to my dominant hand and I haven't tried any painting for 20+ years. Louise has inspired me to paint and to learn watercolor. She makes it fun and comprehensible.

The lion looks majestic! I liked how you got most of the painting done with the wet on wet technique and avoided painting every detail on the lion from the reference.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Although I don't think I'm interested in painting a lion right now, I definitely appreciated the validation of using your studies a lot when painting so that you don't get bogged down in the details. I find when I get stuck in the details, I fuss around with my paint far more than I should. Thanks again for the fantastic vido, Louise!
Lovely painting and tutorial Louise. I share yours with my students occasionally to show them various techniques now that we don't meet. Would you mind sharing how you do your drawing, always so clean? It has puzzled me from the very start. A lot of people struggle with the drawing of something with precise proportions, myself included. Now that you do two paintings of same subject, I wonder if you have a "drawing shortcut?" It would save time and frustration. I love your color choices in this painting, shows the soul of this lion. Also, your use of the brush here is beautifully displayed. Thank you so much. You give much joy.🥂💞😊
From what I know, I think she uses tracing paper over her photo and then a graphite pencil on the back of the tracing paper. From there, she can transfer the image to the watercolour paper seamlessly. Personally, I skip the tracing paper and go straight for graphite paper under my photo. I trace it onto the paper. If you choose this technique, I find its best to already know what you want to trace before you start tracing. Its really hard to erase marks in this method so I recommend using a very sharp pencil, or better yet, a mechanical pencil. Its a balance between finding the right amount of pressure to create a visible line and not making your marks too bold so that they show through your final painting. You probably already know this if you're teaching art, but I thought it was worth the reply!

Hi, you basically did two paintings as the study was very detailed. You didn’t use your journal to do the study but rather watercolor paper. Was that too anxiety provoking? (I’m almost sure you used Arches for the study as well). The panting is marvelous! indeed, the texture of the paper shows through and it looks, smooth, silky 🙂
Thank you Mr S. Yes I used Arches for both. I was so unsure of it that I wanted to practice and make sure I knew what I was doing before I went larger.

I always watch your videos with the highest interest, I can feel you commit yourself in posting contents that are worked very professionaly, addind a delicious funny touch at the end of some of the tutorials. But what keeps me watching is the work you did to achieve with (what appears to be) simplicity a realistic rendering. I love the way you bring the eye to where you want it ... Love the birds feather details you succeed in giving and that inspires me a lot !...
