I love the versatility and grit that Havertz brings to this team. He was everywhere doing everything and allows us to play different tactical styles. His engine is insane, bro is running the full 90 minutes end to end.
I think it was established that Odegaard was Arsenal's most hardworking player in the front press but it felt like it was Havertz time to shine with him out. You don't need to be a genius to beat Ange's Tottenham. Gary O'Neil set out the blueprint on Monday Night Football last year and since then everyone knows what to do. Ange has said he won't change for anyone and everyone has him figured out, so it's an easy win. Sit deep, stay narrow and compact, wait for the useless forwards to not hit a barn door and keep Son and Porro pinned back as they're the only players that can actually score. Then when they've flooded the midfield with practically the entire team, hit them high and wide then when the CBs come across, cut it back for an easy goal. Or if you don't want to do that just get a set piece, literally any set piece, the more you get, the more goals you score.
Southgoat would have been proud of the Arsenal set-up. Unlike Arteta though, this was Southgoat’s only dimension/geared the Arsenal players were 100% committed to the plan.

Love this, difficult to see these things during a tight and nerve racking game but the biggest take away is that Arteta has the tactical ability to solve a huge spectrum of challenges, even in the biggest games. I would argue that the only game he got wrong all last season was Fulham away. In every other game we lost he had us competing and often creating a ludicrous number of chances (WHU at home). He can’t score the goals for us but he cannot be blamed for our attackers not taking chances (Villa at home and away big examples of outplaying opponents but missing too many chances). He’s awesome, but as any Arsenal fan will tell you, we are so conditioned to clown show defending from the late Wenger and Emery eras that we cannot accept we have the best defence in Europe and still sit terrified in the latter stages of close games like yesterday when I imagine most neutrals couldn’t see Spurs scoring. Tottenham in this game could have been a team from the late wenger years. Dominating the ball, but hardly creating anything and give a stupid goal away from set piece (or counter attack)
@@robc1014 sometimes no matter how good you are football has a funny way of ignoring that. All it takes is some ricochets and panic in the box. Let me remind you that it was only last season that Luis Diaz scored ridiculously against us
This is a game Arsenal would have lost a season or two ago. Every year they evolve further under Arteta and now know how to win ugly. That's the sign of a champion team.
Arsenal fan I am. Brilliant analysis! When you watch a game you don't really notice the nuances that you picked up on. For me watching it live, I felt that we defended superbly, Timber was huge at blocking off the right, but they were all excellent. I was worried though about the spaces in the middle. Partey was slow at times and Jorginho was clearly knackered. Without a number 10 I was also worried about the lack of possession and how we were going to score. Spurs worked hard but couldn't find a way through. When we defended, we were very solid. A hard-fought win was how I saw it. Your point about the desire and discipline is what I'll take away from the game. Brilliant that we have that understanding and belief. We had a simple game plan that the players could follow; basically - defend together, stop them moving and hope for a break or set piece goal. Spurs were frustrated by that and when their plan wasn't working they didn't really have a plan B. So, maybe they lost belief and slacked off enough for the poor defending to let Gabriel get free at the right moment for the goal. He was a man possessed. Fantastic to see.
Arsenal's out of possession play was interesting. Think you can coin what they did as the "phase block". Extremely flexible (mostly by Jorgi, Trossard and Havertz) narrow squeezed shape when the opponents had the ball centrally then 2 on 2 defending from full backs and wingers when the opponents had the ball out wide. Possession rarely felt relaxed for Spurs even if they had lots of it because of Arsenal's dedication to block conventional paths
I've seen more than a few better North London Derbies, but I've got to say as a 50 year Gooner, with all the players out, this was up there with the best.
"Arsenal weren't defensive" Trossard's most touches on his heat map are on the edge of his own box. Saka and Martinelli playing wingbacks. If Solanke was a world class striker, then Tottenham go in at the break 1 up. Arsenal win with a badly defended corner. This was just modern park the bus football. Mourinho or Simeone would be proud of this.
That was an unbelievable win for us and this video just increased my confidence in Arteta. I'm no longer worriee about the squad unless we start seeing more injuries. Im confident he and Edu would of thought about it clearly. Its amazing to see how bought in the players are tohis ideas and tactics. We're truly lucky to have him
The setup is deadlocking tactics that Tottenham can’t get through, this tactic is not for winning the game but to block Tottenham, however Arsenal win by set-pieces (corner) which is why they win
Great stuff Adam thankyou! Was thrilled with this result as an Arsenal fan, as an Aussie I am a bit worried for big Ange, he's a great manager and fella but I think Arteta exposed how important it is to have tactical flexibility depending on your opposition. Puts us in a really good space to face City next week and asks the question should we play in a similar way to beat them? They do struggle with low blocks sometimes, maybe it is all really about being Jose's 08 Chelsea after all. lol.
Can you do a video on nufc? Supposed to be slow starters under Howe, and performances show that. But somehow they have 10pts. Are things going to kick into gear or will their luck run out?

Raya is the better keeper but Ramsdale doesn't deserve to have ended up at Southampton where he will be exposed to some horendous defending infront of him and be faced with a volume of shots that makes errors inevitable, he's better than that and would help a lot of mid table teams and compete for an England spot, I still think he's a better keepr than Pickford. a second relegation will be hard to come back from and I don't expect we'll see him at a top half premier league team again, maybe not even in the premier league at all until he's just accpeted a senior back up role.
As an Arsenal fan I was worried all week going into this game due to the absences, but Mikel Arteta has shown how smart he is and how elite he's becoming by going into these games with the faith that what he's drilled into these players will always give us a chance he's turned my "Soft underbelly" Arsenal into an absolute unit of monsters that will fight every minute on the pitch for the team Don't get me wrong I'd like a few more signings in Jan to strengthen our depth but I have full faith and Trust in Arteta to lead us all the way big test this weekend though
I'd love to see a video specifically on Timber and his involvement, He was my man of the match, The difference maker on the day. As a fan I'd say yes but we still have a lot of work to do, Still a few games without key players and that's a little worrying but as you mentioned it was the determination to track back to support one another and to fight for the ball that won them the game so I have full faith they can do it.
I think it was an Arteta masterclass, both in tactics and in getting his players to buy in. The players know they are on to something, so they are willing to listen to the gaffer to get it done.
Arsenal defended very well. Is that a surprise? They worked hard enough to deserve a 0-0 draw. Why has there been so little focus on the way Romero was marking Gabriel? I have no experience at playing football but I do have experience as a basketball defender. To me, it should have been EASY for Romero to defend Gabriel, especially when pushing your opponent is legal. Romero's starting position should have been further to the right. Obviously, my football defensive knowledge is not up to speed. What am I missing?
Spurs are literally beating themselves each time. Not clinical or creative enough with the amount they control the ball in the oppositions 3rd and not fixing the same persistent issues. The persistent issues aren't only set pieces, but they're too open and got very lucky with the chances they were given Arsenal...and other teams so far this season. You're not quite right about Maddison and he has played deeper in general with Udogie pushing higher. The idea is to get Maddison on the ball and be that creative pivit, but it then means when Spurs have the ball higher up the pitch it's not necessarily the players they'd want on the ball. It's not Arsenal that forced Maddison's position, but more by design. A player that impressed me for Arsenal was Saka. His work rate was phenomenal in that game and not only tracked back but was effective in winning the ball. Spurs are just way too predictable in that teams know that there is SO much space on the wings and Arsenal did really well exploiting that, but most teams do and will do as it's easy haha
If you’re up for a rewatch, I would recommend looking at Arteta actually leaving his full backs 1v1 vs the spurs wingers instead of a traditional 2v1 when defending compactly in order to cover out the inverting Udogie and Porro. Jon Mackenzie has done a nice thread on Twitter about it Arteta gambled on Spurs wingers not being good 1v1 threats to have an extra man cover another player or cut space in the block, but changed this after Odobert came on.
Not worried about tactical changes when we’re missing 3/5 of our main midfielders (I guess 6 if you want to count Havertz) and not having Gabi Jesus fit. We’re also playing away in a derby against a very tactically inflexible team. With regards to winning the league - we would have won it twice without 115 FC in the mix, so 3rd times gotta be the charm 😅😊
These types of games and moments in a season make you appreciate a player like Havertz. Can see more and more why Teta wanted him, and dished that 60m out.
The goal itself was one of the main reasons Arteta chose to keep Raya instead of Ramsdale. Raya is a commanding keeper that would of punched that ball away before it got to Gabriel
To be honest, I think viccario is just an Italian ramsdale. They are both great shot stoppers but they never command their 6 yard box and arteta noticed that from the 2022/2023 season. Against palace, aston villa, bournmouth and Manchester united, we conceded goals from direct corners in that season. Against Brentford and Manchester city, we conceded from set pieces. I'm no longer as nervous as I was when we have to defend set pieces because of Raya now.
@@markwalton3367 the whole of spurs defense for lack of commitment to take responsibility in the box. All I'm just saying is that for Gabriel to score in the 6 yard box without the keeper stepping a few yards for to even punch the ball is poor.
Tbf it’s not really any different to how we normally setup. Watch us without the ball when we’ve got all our players back and you’ll see Martin basically playing like a false 9 alongside Kai in a 442 ish shape same as this. They both press the CB’s really well.
The whole Arsenal team is just spectacular, and Arteta is (in my opinion) the best manager in the Premier League. There is depth at every position, and they can sustain even with multiple injuries on the squad. That is, except, for Martin Odegaard. He is the core piece through which everything flows. Without him, the game plan has to change. You can have Rice miss a match. You can even have Saka take a break. But there is no replacement for Odegaard. I hope he recovers quickly.
I think for this game you can see the versatility of arsenal and how they can be a dominant team in one game and absolute monster defensive team in another. You have to take into account the players they were missing as well
Thank you Adam, sir. You have the best analysis of Arteta's Arsenal, always. You can read/watch many tactitos take on a game, but yours are always unique and special. Always learn something new and something that no one else picked up.
this game was a changer man. They started very very shakey but after the 20 mins it seemed like they got it under control and let Spurs have the ball. Great video and great content!
Summarized to save you 16 mins. Sit mid/deep in 4-4-2, wingers goal side/ball side out of possession. Play long on the counter. Snatch a win from a draw. Sam Allardyce, anyone!
Yall gonna act like Arsenal didn’t get lucky? There were moments when Tottenham could have won it. For example the solanke chance and the numerous Brennan Johnson chances(he was actually quite shite). Kudos to them for winning it but it was far from a tactical masterclass… it was more of a Tottenham incompetence in front of goal. Great analysis though
I love the versatility and grit that Havertz brings to this team. He was everywhere doing everything and allows us to play different tactical styles. His engine is insane, bro is running the full 90 minutes end to end.

I didn't like that gameplan. It worked. We have a great defense, and everyone worked very hard. I think we can beat Spurs the usual way.
These types of games and moments in a season make you appreciate a player like Havertz.
Can see more and more why Teta wanted him, and dished that 60m out.
A good manager adapts to the players he has and the opponent they face. I trust Arteta 100%.
Someone tell Ange that!
VG. And, yes, Timber is the real deal.
Arteta must of rung up George Graham for tactical advice and bored everyone to death...
@@dalisonkata7996 Who was more at fault? Viccario or Romero?
This confirms Tottenham as an Europa League side at best. They badly need better players to progress
Need a better manager first , Ange is clueless
I think for this game you can see the versatility of arsenal and how they can be a dominant team in one game and absolute monster defensive team in another. You have to take into account the players they were missing as well
Kings of London...
Genius was just a corner header by gabriel, wow…😅
Most entertaining and informative tactical analysis anywhere. I end up watching vids about other teams not just my own coz the vids are top tier!
Thank you Adam, sir. You have the best analysis of Arteta's Arsenal, always. You can read/watch many tactitos take on a game, but yours are always unique and special. Always learn something new and something that no one else picked up.
Kai Havertz, The Jack of All Trades
Why are people in the comments so upset that Arsenal played well and won?
That is it Arsenal
this game was a changer man.

Dual False 9s is Big Man Little Man False 18s
Being my least favorite part of Whatculture wrestling, Adam clearly was covering the wrong thing
A 👍 specifically for the T90 winter ball in the background cabinet.
