Goalies used to be smaller back in the day (I'm talking about 1920s to late 1960s) and had bigger equipment to stop pucks despite the standard net at the time being 6 ft wide/ 4 ft high... nowadays goalies are on average 6'2" and have smaller equipment so the net is still 4 ft high but increased to 6'6" wide

Teams pull their goalies if they're down by a goal or two in favour of an extra attacker, as you can only have 6 players on the ice at any one time.
