  • I absolutely love those Jimmy Van Heusen tunes. They usually have the signature descending bass line that identify them. I first heard ‘’Like Someone In Love’’ on Dave Brubeck’s ‘’Tritonis” album in 1982. Then I got my hands on the ‘’Real Book’’ Eb major chart in 1984 but still I couldn’t play it harmonically till 1986.
Even when I could play it, I couldn’t even play through the changes; but I still loved it. Then in 1987 at the Sydney conservatorium, George Golla told me to drop the tune into C major so as to use a few open stings to advantage.
In 2016 in the USA, Kurt Warren (former professor of jazz guitar at the University of Texas El Paso) suggested an ascending bass line to me in A major that I had never even dreamt possible.
Later in L.A. Barry Zweig (who studied with Johnny Smith and was in the Buddy Rich band etc) showed me the starting chord that Joe Pass showed to John Pisano (who was Joe’s go-to back up guitarist) who showed it to Barry!
And still I can’t play it………..if only I’d have watched what I was doing instead of closing my eyes and looking the wrong way, I may have got it right; but on the other hand I thought I’d be finished jazz guitar by now…… and since I retired I’m firing on all cylinders.
