The problem with the Ohlone culture that is preached, except for the proven archaeological evidence, is that most of it are half truths made up by mixed-race descendants, who paint an idyllic society where everything was "perfect" until the Spaniards came and ruined everything. Some of the traditions, costume designs, and dances are completely made up, with adulterated designs borrowed from Central American cultures and traditions. In reality, the Ohlone people were mostly naked. Life in pre-colonial SF peninsula wasn't easy, and the +50 Ohlone tribe villages both traded and fought each other for territory and resources. Technically, it's not a land give back, that Ohlone group are new property owners ($27 million paid by the city). Exempt from taxes as a non-profit, but the group will still have to follow all federal and state laws. Also, cannot make their own separate laws. It's not an independent nation within California. The place will be a small public theme park, about Ohlone people. Too early to know if they'll manage to do anything, since the group has limited funds.
