Glad you picked up on Verhoeven's satire of the way colonization and exploitation destroy the less fortunate, while the rich profit off their misery while knowingly withholding the means to treat them better. My favorite theory is that Arnold never makes it out of the lab. The 'doctor' who shows up on Mars also does the commercial voice for the Recal ads, lays out a bunch of third act moments before they happen, and the bead of sweat is easily Doug's brain trying to convince him the man is lying, to preserve the idea that this is real. Still a great movie.
I never thought the sweat was very strong evidence, even though I’d like to think it all happened. 😢 one interesting bit which I got from the novelization was that Melina reveals she had done modeling work for Rekall, explaining how her image was there. The more I think about it, the more I feel like there is evidence both ways that conflicts. Supposedly Verhoeven had it fade to white at the end specifically to show it was a dream! I still wonder how Quaid would have memories of people doing things where he was not present though... 🤔
I mean, the guy may have been sweating because he was on the edge of losing his patient, and, even if it's a dream, having a gun on you might still make you sweat. I don't know why Quaid takes it as proof he's lying.
My second favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger movie!! A Sci-fi Action Thriller that makes us wonder whether it's all real or all a lie. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
I'm early 40s now and this is my favorite movie ever. I used to sneak downstairs as a kid n watch the vhs of dad's as he said I was to young to watch it ... then when I hit 17 and was going to film n media college I'd recorded this and predator onto cassette tape to listen to on the bus on the way :) I was also reading the pulp fiction script and full metal jacket script a friends dad printed me ... Happy days :)
FIlm uses blue screen and digital video uses green. This is because there are more green photosites on the sensor in digital video, meaning there's more detail in the green channel to be able to pull a key. Whereas for film blue is better. This doesn't mean you can't use the opposite, it'd just easier to get good results. They have also used yellow in some old TV programmes, because the colour doesn't bleed as much onto the subjects at a time they couldn't as easily fix it.
7:43 - Just the kind of thing someone wants to hear from the guy who's operating on their brain. Imagine if you were going into heart surgery, and the surgeon told you, 'Don't worry. Things hardly ever f--- up around here,' right before putting you under.
Y'know, I'd kind of appreciate if, when the dentist sticks you with the needle when injecting novacaine, they'd say "I'm gonna stab you in the face now" rather than "You'll feel a little pinch." For the honesty.
The director has said that the end fades to white as opposed to black because that is the moment he has the embolism and dies. He really should have taken the pill.
And yet it can be interpreted as fading to white because he wakes from the dream in a brightly lit room. It's part of the awesome indeterminate nature of the movie. Is it Quaid's implanted dream of being Hauser? It it all real? If it's a memory implant, when does the implanted memory start? When Quaid goes to Rekall? Does it start earlier, so Quaid's resire to go to Rekall is part of the implant? Is the entire movie itself a memory implant into us, the audience? Am I real? Am I dreaming of being Quaid dreaming of being Hauser? This is the kind of mind-bending "What is real? Who am I really?" stuff that Philip K. Dick specialized in.
Arnie throwing some Turkish Delight at the rat... I think Arnie is a secret animal lover. On his youtube channel there's a really funny video of Arnie playing with his miniature pony, getting chased around the paddock. He loves that pony.
It was all a dream. That is not speculation, Verhoeven said so himself. That is why it ends with a fade to white, which is what they do for the end of dream or someone dying, rather than a fade to black at the end.
I was long resistant to the idea that the action taking place in the film was all in Quaid's head. But over the years, I've come to accept that this is almost certainly the case. Still, the film is ambiguous enough that people can--and do--disagree on this point.
The implant is called "Blue skies on Mars" and everything goes the way the memory implant said it would. And how would a "memory trip" have the girl he dreamt of as a part of it? The movie starts after he had already been. Well, in my opinion.
He got disarmed on the elevator! Another fun reaction, your expressions were like 😲😱🤯 pretty much throughout! Paul does do a lot of really good movies, even ones he did not like, such as Hollow Man, after which, he decided that he would only work on movies that spoke to him as a director. Speaking of which, you might like his movie Black Book (Zwartboek), his first Dutch film since 1983 when he moved to the USA.
On a side note it’s possible the man with the pill was right. The remaining of the movie follow exactly what he said what happen, and the final shot of the movie where it goes white can be Arnold being Lobotomized.
I've ALWAYS loved Michael Ironside! Ever since I first saw him in the made for TV mini-series, V: The Final Battle. I actually really really recommend both V: The Final Battle and the first V mini series. It's great storytelling! There's a movie that came out about 10 years ago called Turbo Kid. Even though it was made in this 2000's, it was made like it was a movie made in the 80's about an apocalyptic future. Of course they had to get Michael Ironside to be the villian! The next Arnold movie you need to watch is The Running Man! Best Regards!
V was one of the defining tv events of my childhood. It was a big to-do, my sister and I were glued to it, just seeing it mentioned is a major nostalgia hit😁
The music cue at the end signifies it was all just a dream. (ask Verhoeven) Can you find the coke can in the miniature shot at the very end? Seeing this in the theater when I was 9 blew my mind. Welcome to the club dude!
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions last shot. Its even in your reaction clip👍 The largest Minaiture set up to that point in movies too. And if you liked True Lies and "Secret Agent/double life" movies, check out LONG KISS GOODNIGHT 1996(No Spoilers!).
I like to think that the events of this movie happened. The whole "It Was A Dream" plot rarely ever works out in movies unless it's showen what really happened.
Me too, especially because we see scenes where Arnold is not present or is unconscious. How could he have implanted memories that don’t involve him? Plus, it is more awesome if it happened for real. 😁👍
Michael Ironside said himself that he patterned "Richter" in this film after Ham Tyler- right down to the leather suit jacket. I watched and enjoyed V as well way back then.
Yea I was afraid at the end that they would say that it was not real. However looking at it now in retrospect, it would be kinda cool that they would reveal that Arnold is still basically at Recall and it was the adventure they gave him. They should have done a more of these movies were everytime it's an adventure at a different place. Next could be fighting aliens in another World. Then fighting World of vampires, etc...
You said something good about Michael Ironside, another movie to watch with him would be Extreme Prejudice (1987), starring Nick Nolte (was in the movie 48 Hours with Eddie Murphy, his 1st movie), and Powers Booth (Tombstone). Excellent movie.
Great movie! Another great reaction... (you get used to the picture issue 5 minutes into it until you don't notice) . "Totally" got your "recall" joke hmmm... Useless movie trivia lol : The line "Clever girl" which you said was also in Jurassic Park.. I also remember it from two other non-related movies... Both times it was said to the same actress playing two completely different characters. ?? A couple other movies that will keep you guessing... if you haven't seen them .. Shutter Island is one of those "wait....what?" movies :) And Psycho by Hitchcock is perfect. I can't wait for Last Action Hero... It's so much fun. You'll especially love it.
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions Its Jody Foster.. Silence Of The Lambs... and Contact! both amazing. :) useless info but now you know 4 movies with that line lol
Don't know if this is a Mandela Effect thing, but I actually remember an alternate ending scene. I looked for it on RUclips but I can not seem to find it, so maybe I am wrong or from some alternate universe LOL. In this alternate ending, the memory engineer is standing over Arnie after the kiss and the flash of sunlight and he says "Poor ba***rd suffered an aneurysm." Then the female stands and looks at him dead in the chair. The alternate ending was depicting that his memory trip worked but in the space of a few seconds before he died and the light was his brain dying... Weird I can not find this as I remember it so vividly.
If you wanna call your friend Paul Verhoeven correctly in Dutch, you have to pronounce the OE as an OO, like in Hoover Dam - Paul Verhooven! 😉😁👍🏻 If you wanna see something totally different from Paul, you should watch the icy hot thriller Basic Instinct (1992), also with Sharon Stone and it has one of the most recognisable scenes in movie historie! 🥶🥵👌🏼🤞🏻 He also made a lot of great Dutch classics and even some controversial ones for Dutch standards! 😜 I would definitely recommend them and i think, you can find them with subtitles, if that's not a problem. His most famous film is Turks Fruit (1973) Turkish Fruit! 🥰✌🏼
Subtitles are totally fine and I'm pretty sure I have some of his Dutch movies on my list of movies to watch on this channel! And also thank you for letting me know how to properly pronounce his name! :)
I can't wait until you do the two Bladerunner movies now! It's a rare case where I thought the sequel was roughly as good as the original, but somehow makes the original even better!
Now that you have seen Paul Verhoeven’s science fiction “trilogy”, I suggest you watch his medieval movie “Flesh+Blood” sometime. It’s a good one, starring Rutger Hauer, and has amazing music by Basil Poledouris.
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions OK now I have to sub so I can get notification, Flesh + Blood was one of my favorite movies in the day. I had no idea it was by Verhoeven.
There are many analyses that examine whether the events were real or a memory implant. The movie leaves it unclear, but the balance of evidence is in favor of it all being a false memory. You can read these if you search for them. I think the slightly deeper question is whether it matters. I think that I have a job, a wife, a family, and various experiences. But I only think that because I remember it. If the memory was real but the events didn’t really happen, would that make any difference to me?
I agree the evidence was there and would prefer to believe it was a dream. But how could we see things that happened when Quaid wasnt there. If it was all in Quaid's head the whole movie would have been from his POV
The best thing about the remake is Kate Beckinsale. Combining the Michel Ironsides and Sharon Stone roles into a single character was a nice touch. And Kate really sells the idea that she could beat the crap out of Farrell.
Lol he must’ve thought Ronny Cox played “The Old Man” in Robocop lmao because he was basically the same corporate asshole character in both movies! Oh and btw, I’m also one of those people who commented about Dean Norris but as soon as I got to the end of the review, I deleted the comment 😂
Would a human explode or implode? Neither. The human body can withstand a change of 1 atmosphere of pressure without much damage as long as you exhale. Damage is generally limited to maybe some small capillary bleeding in the surface of the skin or eyes. A prime example of this was when a space suit failed during a vacuum test. The guy in the suit passed out at after 15 seconds as the oxygen was pulled back out of his circulatory system through his lungs. They got him out in less than 90 seconds and he was fine. He did say before he passed out he felt the saliva on his tongue boiling in the low pressure. Deep sea divers on the other hand have died from large pressure changes. Look up the Byford Dolphin diving accident (or don’t because it’s nasty)
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions sorry :( At any rate the most realistic depictions of being exposed to a vacuum on TV/Cinema are probably The Expanse and 2001.
Great movie. I thought you did this movie. The remake for this movie sucks don't watch it not even with your eyes close :) . I hope you do The Running Man 1987 next. Almost no one react to this movie (Somebody beat you to it :) )
Political system Paul Verhoeven is referring to in his movies is authoritarianism. Good reaction, please consider to remove the circle from the middle of the watermark, because it covers the picture too much to enjoy the movie. Thanks for another good material 👍🏻
I know it's more than a year since you posted this and the chance of you reading this comment is very small, but I wanted to address a couple of things you mentioned in your commentary and critique. 1st - Verhoeven's use of violence and gore: These scenes are always delivered in such a way that a large majority of the audience will be horrified when unspeakable things are being done to a good guy, but delighted when equally unspeakable things are being done to a bad guy. Think of how queasy we feel when Murphy is basically being killed near the beginning of Robocop, and how thrilled we are when Boddicker gets killed in the end. I think Verhoeven is trying to point out a kind of in-built hypocrisy in our psyches. 2nd - In Robocop, presumably Detroit still has a municipal government, but they have contracted out all policing services to a private corporation. This would be equivalent to turning over policing to a really well-funded right-wing extremist group. In Starship Troopers, the whole planet is ruled by what Verhoeven himself has said is essentially a fascist government. In Total Recall, I believe that Mars is a "Corp-ocracy" - i.e., run by a corporation (there's probably a much better and more elegant word for this!) which results in a fascist-style dictatorship. Always pleased to see Huxley!
Course I'll read this comment! I really liked your observation on his use of violence with good and bad characters. I'll have to rewatch these movies with those thoughts in mind!

The nurse at Recall says what really happened. Its not a dream.
Quade is asleep in the chair after being injected.
So he can't be in the dream while having an out of body experience about him dreaming inside a dream?
"We have never heard of Douglas Quade" - guy at Recall scene.
This all takes place outside of Quade's conciousness. And then he wakes up in Johnny Cab and we see things from his point of view.
For example if your dreaming and someone injected you to fall asleep inside your dream. Would the dream be of you outside of your body watching yourself go to sleep and hear what people are talking about around you?
Or would you just skip to the next scene your dream is in.
I think we as an audience are meant to think its a dream. But he's playing out events for real.
And all the characters and locations all existed before his dream or visit to recall.
Dude you need to do Commando trust me mindless Arnie film fantastic or the running man or both
Running Man!!! What a classic!
Both for sure. I have yet to see any of the movie reaction youtubers I follow do those and am getting anxious. 😁
Don't worry I am planning to do both!
Eraser is also a lot of fun.

So underrated !
Really love how you take your time at the end to express your thoughts about the movie, not many reactors do that. Plus your Top 10 Anime Betrayals really got me 😆
PS: For the record it's pronounced the same: Ver- hoe - ven.
Best scene in the movie is that little person woman shooting that machine gun standing on the bar top. Awesome.
@ 21:29 Dude! You can thank Philip K. Dick for that. LOL!! ✌️😎
1:20 - Kind of like Death Wish. You can't really do a good remake of that movie, because nobody could be Charles Bronson.
100%
Awww! I guess Conan Arnold didn't get the memo when he punched those camels!
"Turkish Delight" is another movie directed by Verhoeven.
It's been a long time since I watched it, but since you are an Arnold fan try out "Running Man". It has a great smarmy villain in Richard Dawson.
the commentary for this movie is hilarious LOL same with conan ‘ its litearlly arnold explaining what he’s doing on screen LOL. and paul laughing
It was all a dream. That is not speculation, Verhoeven said so himself. That is why it ends with a fade to white, which is what they do for the end of dream or someone dying, rather than a fade to black at the end.
Thank you so much for the awesome movie review reaction! One of my favorite movies!
Suggestions for movies: THE FLY (1986), The running man, Predator
He got disarmed on the elevator!
Another fun reaction, your expressions were like 😲😱🤯 pretty much throughout!
Paul does do a lot of really good movies, even ones he did not like, such as Hollow Man, after which, he decided that he would only work on movies that spoke to him as a director.
Speaking of which, you might like his movie Black Book (Zwartboek), his first Dutch film since 1983 when he moved to the USA.
I have a few of his other movies on my movie list including Hollow Man!
On a side note it’s possible the man with the pill was right. The remaining of the movie follow exactly what he said what happen, and the final shot of the movie where it goes white can be Arnold being Lobotomized.
Ronnie Cox...Robocop CEO...blows up rival ...had a sinister lieutenant...red from that 70s show.
(ask Verhoeven)
Can you find the coke can in the miniature shot at the very end?
Seeing this in the theater when I was 9 blew my mind.
Welcome to the club dude!
There is a coke can in the miniature at the end! Now I must find it
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions last shot.
@@namelessjedi2242 I made the same point in another comment
Anyone else here think of Michael Ironside, first and foremost, as Ham Tyler from V?
Michael Ironside said himself that he patterned "Richter" in this film after Ham Tyler- right down to the leather suit jacket. I watched and enjoyed V as well way back then.
Yea I was afraid at the end that they would say that it was not real. However looking at it now in retrospect, it would be kinda cool that they would reveal that Arnold is still basically at Recall and it was the adventure they gave him. They should have done a more of these movies were everytime it's an adventure at a different place. Next could be fighting aliens in another World. Then fighting World of vampires, etc...
Great Arnie that constantly makes you question what's really happening
This is the colorful masterpiece you get when combining Verhoeven, Schwarzenegger and Goldsmith. Quite the crazy ride.
Highlander is also a great film! You gotta watch that! There can be only one!
Don’t bother with the other ones lol
Definitely top ten anime betrayals. We all liked him, we all trusted him.
6:58 - Because Arnold Schwarzenegger saying 'Saturn' isn't really that meme-worthy. Arnold Schwarzenegger saying 'Mars' is amazing.
Arnold saying "Uranus" wouldn't have been a bit too much, though. "Get your ass to Uranus" would be an awesomely bad line.
I've seen both of those movies and I really love them! Also that piece of movie trivia is pretty wild maybe it's that actresses specialty!
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions Its Jody Foster.. Silence Of The Lambs... and Contact! both amazing. :) useless info but now you know 4 movies with that line lol
Awesome! This is a really fantastic movie😀
Ollie, seriously dude, as much as I love this movie, I just couldn't concentrate on it. Where did you get your tee shirt mate? It's awesome lol 🤣🤣
Redbubble!!
The movie “Basic Instinct” another great flick directed by your friend Paul Verhoeven
Cool! 👍😁 Knew you would like it 😎
Some suggestion movies for ya!
- Pee Wees Big Adventure
- BeetleJuice
- Edward Scissorhands
- Dark City
Jerry Goldsmith is one of the greats.
If you like Michael Ironside, you should react to David Cronenberg's classic "Scanners."
Yeah, I am surprised he hasn’t watched it.
Woah what if that ending was a Rekall mind moment that you had...
I don't remember that ending.
7:32, he's gonna have the ride of his life.
If you wanna call your friend Paul Verhoeven correctly in Dutch, you have to pronounce the OE as an OO, like in Hoover Dam - Paul Verhooven! 😉😁👍🏻
If you wanna see something totally different from Paul, you should watch the icy hot thriller Basic Instinct (1992), also with Sharon Stone and it has one of the most recognisable scenes in movie historie! 🥶🥵👌🏼🤞🏻
He also made a lot of great Dutch classics and even some controversial ones for Dutch standards! 😜
I would definitely recommend them and i think, you can find them with subtitles, if that's not a problem.
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions Oh that's great, that you already have some on your list! 👌🏼✌🏼
Great joke at end lol. Great reaction!
I can't wait until you do the two Bladerunner movies now! It's a rare case where I thought the sequel was roughly as good as the original, but somehow makes the original even better!
I have already seen those and I own them both on Blue Ray! SO good right!
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions Awesome! I'm so glad you saw and enjoyed them!
Now that you have seen Paul Verhoeven’s science fiction “trilogy”, I suggest you watch his medieval movie “Flesh+Blood” sometime. It’s a good one, starring Rutger Hauer, and has amazing music by Basil Poledouris.
I'm watching that one soon I believe!
If it was all in Quaid's head the whole movie would have been from his POV
micheal ironside and "the other lady"......OMG
Another great movie with cool soundtrack, I don't like the Remake though. Another good Schwarzenegger one is The Running Man
The best thing about the remake is Kate Beckinsale.
Conan The Barbarian is another essential Arnold movie.
Those are already on the channel!
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions Oh, silly me! I actually already watched your Conan videos and totally forgot.
You have good taste if you liked Starship Troopers. Next Hollowman or Basic Instincts.
oxygenated was the right word
It's a great movie with a lot of thinking on top of an awesome action movie
All of the trip salesman's promises came true.
Just looked it up and I regret
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions I just did the same! What was I thinking! 😱
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions sorry :(
At any rate the most realistic depictions of being exposed to a vacuum on TV/Cinema are probably The Expanse and 2001.
@@paratus04 Haha don't be sorry! It was a super interesting read through those events and what went wrong!
Great reaction!
9:25, goes all John Wick on their asses!
John Wick is not the first awesome action hero like people seem to think.
14:19here's real life almost copying a movie but instead of that thing, it's with a Q-tip.
check out commando and running man early 80s Arnold 😉
love how much this one messes with your brain all the way through right up til the end. Was it all real or just a 'Recall" delusion?
See you at the party Richter!
Great movie. I thought you did this movie. The remake for this movie sucks don't watch it not even with your eyes close :) . I hope you do The Running Man 1987 next. Almost no one react to this movie (Somebody beat you to it :) )
Where'd you get that T-shirt? Love it!
I got it from Redbubble! It's pretty great isn't it
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions Found it! Thanks for the reply. Really enjoying your reactions to some of my favorite films growing up.
One hit wonder as in; "I wonder why they made a remake?"
Political system Paul Verhoeven is referring to in his movies is authoritarianism. Good reaction, please consider to remove the circle from the middle of the watermark, because it covers the picture too much to enjoy the movie. Thanks for another good material 👍🏻
6:12 Memory implant.
8:18, something went wrong with the implant.
I can't believe I was only 12 years old when I saw this movie for the first time 30 years ago !
As u will find out the remake does not live up to the original
Just wait tell you watch robocop two
I hope he does. I’ve always enjoyed it even if it is not as great as the first.
See you at the party 💪💪 lmao 😂

The great Jerry Goldsmith 😄
