Can a $100 tune up bring back my E36's lost horsepower?

In today's video, we give Dory the bmw 328i convertible a much-needed tune up and try to regain some horsepower and torque that the car has lost over the years. Usually, gaining horse power in a naturally aspirated engine like this bmw M52 is a bit tricky, especially without forced induction like a turbo or supercharger. However, I suspected my e36 might need some basic maintenance and BMW-ish things to bring back some of the horse power that was already lurking under the hood. If you have an e36, e46, e90, e92, etc. (or other old bmw) there are plenty of leaks, filters, and tune up items to address that might give your car some extra power :)
Follow along for more e36 build content with Dory the 328i! Thanks for watching, see you next week :)

You should look into the fuel pump. Changed mine in a 214k mile 328i, and it definitely made a difference. However, i did change mine because I kept noticing the car's 'eagerness' after a complete refuel. Seems like the sheer weight pressure was helping a dying pump

Hey Logan! I followed your advice today. Hooked up a smoke machine to intake on my e30.. found a huge vacuum leak from the oil cap. Replaced it and my cold start is smoother than ever. Ty ty!

Found you because I just bought that same bumper for my track car. I have 2 328i sedans, one a 97 and the other a 98. Both have the ZF 5-speed and one takes MTF and one ATF per the labels on the transmissions. So, you gotta look on the actual trans to know. These cars are pretty good to work on but just hard to troubleshoot sometimes. I've found just cleaning the MAF periodically helps and I've also had a host of problems I eventually sourced to a cheap and easy to replace failing coolant temp sensor. Keep up the E36 content!

@@logan-taylor yeah, I've gone through 4 sensors, one being hella that didn't work when the car was cold and lasted half a year max, not even Continental/VDO works, only the original one does, and it makes a night and day difference on performance. If you use BMW software it will throw a code for it when reading the ECU.

As the M52 family of engines is based on a Siemens ECU, every sensor needs to be Siemens/VDO. I mean every sensor. Crankshaft, Camshaft, MAF, O2. If you're replacing parts and you put in a part that is not Siemens, the engine will run and drive, but you will be missing out on performance and fuel consumption. Camshaft and Crankshaft sensors will degrade over time, you will not really notice, up until they give up and you can't turn on your engine.
Before changing my Camshaft Positions sensor, i had owned my E36 for about 4 years. In this period i noticed that on decceleration the engine had a slight burble and pop overrun. After changing the Camshaft Position sensor with an OEM one, the burble and pops went away completely. This is one sign of a degraded cam sensor. Engine pulls a lot better and much better fuel consumption.
