So refreshing to see someone of your caliber in this sport come to the deeper reckoning of ultimately who you are and what motivates you. Sending you my deepest respect and gratitude for your years on the bike we have all benefitted from watching and gratitude for your bravery to step off the train. Best of luck, Tom!
The beauty of watching sport is that the people we are watching, but for their gift, are people like us. He's been one of the very best for the last few years but listening to this everyone can understand the emptiness that comes with needing to live up to other people's expectations. Chapeau for having the courage of your convictions Tom.
You are doing the right thing! You are not the first athlete who has taken a break, of cycling no longer makes you feel happy and is not professionally rewarding, than what would motivate you to push forward!? Hope to see you on the bike again but best of luck with whatever your next adventure is!
What a wonderful interview! Tom Dumoulin shows himself to be a very deep thinker who is placing a greater value on being a complete human being rather than just a star athlete. I have the deepest respect for Tom and the decision he has made. It is not an easy one but if he decides to leave competitive cycling altogether or to come back refreshed, he will have made the right decision. All my best to Tom Dumoulin. You have my greatest respect.
Never forget that moment ... Tom, take Care!
Good to see him making this decision, some time in the making judging by last year's struggles. Really odd though that this is announced the day after the team announces their selection for this year's Tour which Dumoulin was a part of.
Best of luck to him. I understand what he's getting at. So many of us get into a career or a path and just stick with it because the money is good and they're doing rather successful (according to society's standards), but ultimately they're not happy what they're doing. It sounds like he was just running on inertia these past years, doing it just to do it but with no real heart. It's best to step away and decide if he really wants to continue to cycle. If not, best of luck on his new path. He's had a great career even if he stopped right now.
You have my respect, Tom! Hope you´ll find your new way and get back to peloton again. If you´ll find you dont want to get on the train again, I wish you the best and enjoy riding and life.
Grts Luc
The best for you Tom, find yourself and be happy, nomal people like us don not understand the pressure you guys carry all the time, but I hope to see you back as the good rider you are, enjoy your vacations...
Good luck, Tom! Do what's right for you: you are a champion and you deserve to be happy. Spend time with your loved ones. You know what's important. We will miss you in the races, but maybe you will return to the peloton one day. Respect.
Tom, je hebt ons wielerliefhebbers mooie momenten laten meebeleven. Ga nu lekker medicijnen studeren in Maastricht en vind je weg. Gaat helemaal lukken! Succes. Komt goed! Paul Doorenbosch
I got a bit teary eyed at the news. Totally understand that he needs to get to a place where cycling is something he does for himself and not for others. It is not sustainable to live according to what others expect from you. I hope he finds the love for it and can come back happy to just be racing. Would be heart breaking to see him leave the sport at such a young age. I maintain he has been the most consistent cyclist over the last 3-4 years. This dude is part of the reason I came to love cycling so much. He simply elevates the playing field. Best of luck Tom!
Entirely understand your decision. You have given us all some great memories. Whatever you do next is entirely your choice. If you do come back to racing, we are all with you. Just be happy that you are physically and mentally well.
First grand tour i watched i was bed ridden after being hit by a car cycling was the 2017 Giro. Been a fan since, sad to see a break but hopefully it will do him well!
I agree with you tom. It will feel good to finally get a full inhale in your lungs of relaxed air! Love your family. Get love from your family. Drink beer. Laugh. Listen to some good music. Dance. Go outside and shout out a victory yell. And when you are ready, get on your bike and go out by yourself. Feel your body power. Enjoy it. Relax. Like it felt as a kid. Only when you feel like it. Repeat as necessary. Take your time. Smile. We love you.
finally........a......human....being....a personality.......not a 'cyclist'........a sportsman.....an olympian....none of these are essential to a life worth living;;;;;;remember.....being a physician was his passion....cycling his pastime..yet he had a knack for cycling which beyond the .08% 0f applicants who get accepted into medical school in holland(easily one of the top five medical education systems in the world) yet as far as cycling he was at .ooo1%, in other words 1 in at least 1.5 million of elite cyclists of his cohort.....TDF stage winner, grand tour champion,...Giro Stage Winner, Olympic Medalist, ICU World Champion.....yup he has done well he needs a rest
Well done Tom. Be yourself, recover your health and wellbeing. Relax and enjoy your life. You have much time ahead of you, whatever you choose to do. You are a champion cyclist, a great sportsman, a humble and honest gentleman.
A view I'd like to share with one of the most respectful (and low-profile) cyclist: enjoy climbing without a chronometer. Here the sound of the air, feel your freedom in the climb. Do it alone, with no people along the roads. And then when U hopefully get back, stay that "human being" rather than solely a racer on your bicyle ! You may get appreciated for being what you are, for your kindness and fair spirit, share your thoughts or advising, your great sense of low-profile but also of competition (Frenchies need , or sometimes miss such nice spirit of low-profile athletes): share your thoughts, lots of people will be interested, even when you don't win ! Show the world winning is not the only way. "Natural Selection" or competition for a unique winner, are ideas of the 18th century...you're a 21 century great athlete. Anyway, thanks for what you shared w/ us.
These are existential questions everyone has a right to pose themselves unless they're scrabbling around in the dirt wondering where their next meal is coming from, which means a fair chunk of the planet. If Tom does come up with the answers and chooses to return to cycling, the maturity of outlook he will have acquired might make him an even tougher competitor.
Bèste Tom. Iech begriep dien beslissing hiel good. Oets höb iech dat aoch gehad in mien eige werrek. De wèls ut good doen veur eederein mèr dat geit neet. In euze wereld mooste väöl mie aon diech zellef dinke.
in a cycling where the time trials have been eliminated his presence has become useless. this is the truth, today the grand tours are designed only for pure climbers, being complete athletes no longer pays.

Respect Tom. To bad we won't see you on the bike for a while and maybe this is the end but you did well. Good luck!

Probably my favourite rider. Although it's sad that he is stopping his career, I certainly don't think it's a bad decision. Good luck Tom!

I watch all tours because of you Tom. And i respect your desition. It is your life - and your choice.

Think about it !!!
And what ever you do is right !!!
But do it for you !!!
Nice to see you happy 😊

For us you will always be a champ that won all the harts of cycling fans!

I just bought the pink tcr advanced sl that has your name on a few weeks ago...Wish you all the best Tom...
Got the Giant Trinity he rode at the 2017 Giro here :-) Hope I’ll be able to give it a fast ride at a tt around here once covid lets us...

Enjoy your free time Tom Domoulin! Thinking about yourself is the most important thing in life.
Sad and happy at the same time. Sad to loose such an extraordenary cyclist, happy for him and his courageous decision. I wish all the best!!

Dat laatste shot is een goede samenvatting.
So sad to me. I was hoping to see Tom wearing someday the yellow jersey in Paris.
Best of luck Tom

Wise thing to do

Tom good luck!
Another great cyclist also spoke of himself in 3rd person. Better to leave like this than to end up like him. All the best, Tom
😭❤
happy for him. life can feel like a rat race at times. just imagine the expectations he has to feel.
he really hates riding Cervelo, when will you all finally listen to him

Einde oefening.
Come back soon😥
Een wielrenner met een burnout...? Guru Tom?
Translation: he Wanda to be GC leader

This is what happens after less than a month of riding ****ing Cervelo bikes!
oh oh ca pue le dopage !!

Nou wat zielig ,altijd jammeren .
He need break, because he is not strong enough to ride with jumbo riders..... I have known this from the start he came in jumbo...
Not True. If his mental state is not 100% cyclist at the moment, he can't be fysical 100% cyclist.
@@TheBarts27 exactly
WHO ARE YOU?
7th place at the tour is not strong enough?
He is not strong as Kruijswijk or Wout or Roglic or Sepp Kuss... Sorry, we saw this on tour...
