Hi Sam. Non-finished cab gauges: did they just forget? Quartering: if you move the loco so that one side of the coupling rods are 'top dead centre' (to use a motorcar engine term), then look at the other side, won't your eye allow you to tell whether the quartering is correct (you won't get a quantitative measure- but, like my late father would say "a blind man would like to see the difference"!). Being a bit of a pessimist, I can't help feeling forlorn over your hopes that Bachmann (or any manufacturer) will re-issue models for which there is still a demand!
Hard to say - there's a very well planned and precise manufacturing process that goes into these... so it's impossible for them to just forget... but it'd be interesting to see some other batches of these to compare! Yes that's true - you can tell to an extent just by looking! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I think the popularity of the 0-6-2 wheel arrangement is because it has most of the advantages of a 0-6-0 tank with a little extra space to cram more in so the coal and cab can be carried on the pony truck and you can have a bigger firebox and longer boiler or simply just give it a big bunker and the loco still doesn't struggle to go round bends as the wheel base isn't so fixed. I think this is why it was so popular for both London suburban services and welsh coal trains. I think the paint finish is most likely the paint being a slight gloss as opposed to matt or satin which contray to rivet counters belief make the locos look plastic, locos are made of metal and painted gloss so they should look shiny. Great video by the way
Sam's trains I used to not have anything to do with someone not from the us but when I figured out you were British I changed my mind so thanks for opening my eyes and don't ask why I hated people outside of my country I will never be able to explain
Wow what a day, I see steam hauled test trains at the Embasy and Bolton abbey steam railway, get home and an exquisite Sam's trains video, you put so much effort into your uploads and that is a testament to you. You should be very proud Sam
God, LBSC Umber is wonderful (probably even better than Improved Engine Green).Especially on the E4, one of my favourite tank engines (which I have never sadly sat in a train pulled by one, because Birch Grove has been awaiting an overhaul for ages). I hope Bachmann brings this back one day, as I would *absolutely* get it.
I really like the E4. I think it’s such a nicely proportioned loco. I really should find a good one to buy before they dry up! Great video as usual. Slowly catching up with the backlog 😂😂
Wow 100k . Congratulations. Really like your channel and you no nonsense reviews . This has just become the influence of a complete redesign of a Thomas OC I have had in mind for our theater director, who is leaving us after this semester concludes in May. I call her Francesca the Theater Engine. Originally, it was going to be a completely original design, combining elements from American and British railways together... but this proved to be absolute rubbish. After seeing this review, I went on making the OC look so much better and cleaner by simply adding the face on the smokebox, nameplates from smokebox to boiler, adding a 1 in front of the 579, and adding a small badge underneath the LBSC insignia. I must say that this model and engine is an absolute masterpiece. If only I had the supplies for an actual face for the smokebox door and other things I have on it...

I bought two unlined BR black ones (fantastic runners); One reliveried and numbered as 2510 in Southern black, the one sent to the Isle Of Wight 1947 to 1949. The other one is W37 "Blackgang" a "what if the trial had been successful?"
4.54 Cab roofs were often made of wood planks overlaid with canvas. This was then waterproofed with several coats of white lead -- cheap and effective -- to fill the pores of the canvas and kill off dry-rot funghi. Naturally it didn't stay white very long, but not many passengers are going to check out the loco's cab roof. For the same reason, most nineteenth-century coach roofs were also white, to start with at least. If you want that just-out-of-the-workshop look to go with that magnificent livery, white it is.

I have an example of this locomotive which i have weathered to working condition in a goods figuration. As a part of this weathering I usually dust the coal load with actual, fine ground, coal. Nothing looks more realistic and a fine dusting of this onto the Bachmann coal load makes for just right in my eyes.
Bachmann have really been on fire with their tank engines in recent times. Fairly priced, nicely decorated and almost always good runners. Have you ever reviewed their 57xx/87xx Pannier? I'm pretty sure it's old tooling but the decorations still look ok
Hi Sam - another great review of a lovely loco. According to Wikipedia sprung buffers came in with the Liverpool and Manchester in the 1830s; however, they are not really of practical use to most 00-gauge modellers, and these buffers certainly look fine. Also per Wikipedia, the brown+cream Pullman livery was copied from an LBSC coach livery, as the LBSC used Pullmans a lot; so a Pullman train is very appropriate.
Morning Sam, always enjoy watching the reviews you seem very honest about what you find, I have noticed and this makes me laugh with your serious models you always start by saying "this is one of my absolute favourites" just admit you like model trains. Well done you keep up the great reviews and I must say this is one of my favourites as well. Look after yourself, Eddy xx
Hi Sam. I have just bought 2 E4's from eBay but close to Bachmann's price. One is in Southern Green and the other the one you reviewed. I have got my eye on the Hornby or Hattons four wheel coaches. Thank you for your review. Bye from Ian.
Congratulations on 100k subscribers Sam. Lovely locomotive Sam. I love to have a locomotive like that in Southern Sunshine livery. Very nice indeed. An interesting video Sam i have enjoyed this immensely thank you 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🐖🚅🚄
Any chance to see that E4 and Atlantic again is most welcome! Possibly my favourite models, but, like pies, my favourite is usually what I’m eating at the moment lol! Hard to choose an all time fav but these two are contenders. An no, I don’t eat models hahaha!
Interested to see a rereview of this locomotive! The E4 shape always kinda reminds me of what Thomas looks like, especially the splashes on the front wheel as well as the dome, and rear.
Hi Sam! Wonderful Video. I have an engine I think you would really enjoy. It is the HO Scale Union Pacific P-10 4-6-2 USRA Light Pacific #2880 produced by Bachmann. They are around 200 USD, and come from factory with DCC and Sound. Don’t let the price discourage you though, it is truly worth the money. Even though it’s an American loco, I strongly believe you’ll enjoy it.
I got mine (32500 in br lined black, weathered by its previous owner) as payment for fixing a couple of his other locos (bachmann 57xx, 5 pole ringfield flying scotsman, bachmann 37/0). Runs really well, haven't run it in a while though.
On the topic of paint finishes, I believe it's the type enamel they use for the top coat. Some are glossy(dealership shine) and some are applied just to hold everything in to give a brushed metal type look(more realistic).
Nice-looking loco and your usual competent, detailed review. Would you mind explaining your overall rating system for those of us who came in relatively late? I mean, this engine scored (if I counted right) 20.5 out of 25 stars and had a pulling power of 22 coaches on S&L track -- how does that translate to an overall score of 8.59 out of 10? Not criticising at all, but I am curious as to how the overall rating is obtained.
Many thanks, really glad you liked it! The different categories carry different weights, so it's not as simple as just averaging them out. I've written a small program that generates the scores! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam! It’s certainly a lovely looking little loco, isn’t it? I wonder if the versions in the current Bachmann range still have the same mechanisms? It still feels weird to me to hear a little LBSC tank is called E4.... I said it before, but to me an E4 is a great big double-deck high speed train, specifically the one in my profile photo! And.... The “interloper” was the bright green LBSC Thomas, right? The colour scheme makes me think of a can of 7 Up,... 🤣🤣
The LBSC probably had the largest concentration of beautiful locos out of all the pre- grouping railways. The E4 is one of the best.
Ahh that sounds fantastic - bet this does look great with a bit of weathering actually!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
100k considering what your channel focuses on, you are legendary
haha thanks so much Jason, I wouldn't go that far though! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Bachmann have really been on fire with their tank engines in recent times. Fairly priced, nicely decorated and almost always good runners. Have you ever reviewed their 57xx/87xx Pannier? I'm pretty sure it's old tooling but the decorations still look ok
They have - tank engines are something they do amazingly well!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Beautiful locomotive and great review! Definitely like tank engines!
Thanks a lot mate - me too!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks a lot for sharing Rick - so this should have them really then!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Very good looking locomotive
Congrats on 100k
I agree - it's epic isn't it? :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Good morning - and yes, I won't deny that... very few models aren't my favourites! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I do love a vary in liveries every so often. Lbsc liveries are a joy to look at. :P
I agree - this is one of the best isn't it?
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
OH YEAH THIS IS HAPPENING Congratulations on the 100k sub bro
Thanks so much Zech, really appreciate it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I may not be able to go to the nrm in York but I do enjoy watching your trains run around your layout😀
haha glad to hear that Sam! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
You know, there's a reason why I love the E4s, probably because the livery fits the overall design.
Yeah I agree - amazing livery!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam. I have just bought 2 E4's from eBay but close to Bachmann's price. One is in Southern Green and the other the one you reviewed. I have got my eye on the Hornby or Hattons four wheel coaches. Thank you for your review. Bye from Ian.
Ahh very interesting - hope you find them decent Ian!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Congratulations on 100k subscribers Sam. Lovely locomotive Sam. I love to have a locomotive like that in Southern Sunshine livery. Very nice indeed. An interesting video Sam i have enjoyed this immensely thank you 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🐖🚅🚄
Thanks so much Mark! Oh lucky you - as you say, very nice indeed!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I am slowly falling in love with that LBSC livery, very elegant indeed, maybe we could get a sams trains top 5 liveries?
Me too Josh - it's very lovely isn't it? :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That’s a very good idea
Congrats on 100k dude!
Thank you so much!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Congrats one 100k subs Sam.
As for the E4 it looks brilliant, I want one.
Thank you so much Sean!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Any chance to see that E4 and Atlantic again is most welcome! Possibly my favourite models, but, like pies, my favourite is usually what I’m eating at the moment lol! Hard to choose an all time fav but these two are contenders. An no, I don’t eat models hahaha!
haha I heartily agree - and I don't blame you, they don't taste right...
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wow the finish on the livery is amazing, much better than my dapolN gauge terrier in the LSBCR livery-Ben
It really is isn't it? Superb liveries from Bachmann!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Interested to see a rereview of this locomotive! The E4 shape always kinda reminds me of what Thomas looks like, especially the splashes on the front wheel as well as the dome, and rear.
The E2 (Thomas) was meant to be a go between the E4 and the ageing Stroudly E1s.
Thank you! Yeah you're right - it does a lot of folks too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ive been watching sam for about 4 3 years
Oh wow! That's a long time - thanks so much!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Happy 100K Sam. I’m so happy you made it to this awesome milestone. Also I though this engine was of Thomas’s basis.
Thanks so much my friend - and it sure does look like him!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great review and an engine on my list. Paintwork reminds me, Easter eggs tomorrow!
haha thanks Gareth - that's very true actually!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I am the 100,000th subscriber! Thank you, thank you. Please -- no applause! I look forward to my celebration party invitation!
haha amazing - thanks so much for the support! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I thought you were reviewing foot locker most of the Thomas was based off of but I was sorely surprised and honestly I really enjoyed it
haha thanks David, glad to hear that!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks a lot mate - that does sound amazing, I'd love to try one of those! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love the lbsc livery congratulations on 100k
Thanks so much Lewis!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I got mine (32500 in br lined black, weathered by its previous owner) as payment for fixing a couple of his other locos (bachmann 57xx, 5 pole ringfield flying scotsman, bachmann 37/0). Runs really well, haven't run it in a while though.
Ahh fantastic - they are great runners! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
On the topic of paint finishes, I believe it's the type enamel they use for the top coat. Some are glossy(dealership shine) and some are applied just to hold everything in to give a brushed metal type look(more realistic).
Very interesting - wonder if you're right? It does wonders, whatever it is!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Beautiful model Sam! A successful design indeed and we're lucky to have a surviving example!
Thanks a lot Ryno - we sure are! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another wonderful video sam! Keep it up!
Thank you!! :D
Happy Easter Sam!
(BTW we haven't seen bullman in a while )
Happy Easter!! :D
Hi Sam, You do have some nice engine's, the E4 has some good looks, nice review, (and not a bit of glue in sight) All the Best Brian 🤗
Thanks so much Brian - really glad you liked it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
When can you do a shunting video using some of your tank engines like this one
*cough *cough E2 *cough *cough
Damn they really skipped the E3 lol
The E4 wasn't the kind of shunting tank engine
@@n.wbrakevanstudios1005 much agree
I know it! Do have a few shunting videos planned, so watch out! :D
Very much so Ewan - I expect so yeah, not aware of any updates! Yeah that is weird, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Congrats on 100k you deserve it!
Cheers Dan :)
Cheers Dan, thanks ever so much! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
