It's my favorite verse. I cried a lot growing up. I felt guilty about it. Then I read that Jesus cried too and it let me know if Jesus could cry, it would be okay if I did too.

Jefferson despite his intellectualism seemed unable to reconcile himself to Britain and followed the French. This was most notable in his refusal to ally with the various anti-Napoleonic coalitions and that he financed Napoleon through the Louisiana Purchase which he could have marched into for nothing. So Jefferson effectively kept the Napoleonic Wars going internationally. Presumably he wanted to take the Canada's provinces as a gift of war instead. Certainly this seems to be Jefferson's acolyte Madison's motivation for the Napoleonic War in North America which is misleadingly called the 'War of 1812'. This ended in total humiliation for him, running from Washington DC as the Capitol and White House was burned. Baltimore was under siege by Anglo-Canadian forces, there was no 'decisive victory' there at all, the British forces withdrew after a bombardment , there was no counter attack from it. Buffalo was burned down, New York declared neutrality. the Royal Navy and Marines depredated the coastal communities at will. Madison was fortunate that Britain did not finish him and US independence off by imposing harsh terms but was magnanimous in offering status quo ante and that all future territorial disputes be settled by arbitration and negotiation. No - the skirmish at New Orleans was irrelevant to the overall prosecution of the war, it had already been surpassed by the Treaty of Ghent, and the defeat of the US as an ally of Republican France. Fortunately the wise counsel of Lord Liverpool, Castlereagh and Wellington prevailed to let America be. It was not a 'draw', as the British had no territorial demands on the US but Madison wanted Canada.
The Monroe Doctrine was fatuous hot air and aspiration. It did not stop French domination of Mexico which was intended to destabilise the US during the Civil War nor did it stop the British domination of the former Spanish colonies of South America.
