  • PUTIN: "It could have been a feint, a trick!" On this topic he puts on his poker face
According to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, US presidential candidate Donald Trump is immediately ready to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine if he wins the election. Orban announced this in a letter to EU heads of state and government after his meeting with Trump last week, which was published on Tuesday.
Trump would not wait until his inauguration as the new US president in January, but would begin his efforts immediately after the election in November, Orban wrote in the letter, which was also addressed to EU Council President Charles Michel. "He (Trump) has detailed and well-founded plans for this," wrote Orban, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.
Shortly after taking over the EU Council Presidency on July 1, the controversial Hungarian Prime Minister had already met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Orban's visit to Putin and Xi caused outrage in the EU. The EU stressed that Orban had no mandate from the union of states to do so. The EU Commission drew conclusions from the unilateral actions and intends to boycott informal meetings of the Hungarian EU Council Presidency and not send any commissioners to them.
