Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Sonata No. 8 in A minor, K. 310 Piano: Hélène Grimaud 0:00 - Allegro maestoso 7:51 - Andante cantabile con espressione 18:12 - Presto
From what I know about Mozart, he would have been delighted with his performance. Then, he would’ve asked Helene how she was feeling the day she performed it.
@Ernie Quist Do you know that Steinway was founded in Europe under the name Steinweg? There is also a piano factory called Grotrian-Steinweg. I don't mind Grimaud playing on a Steinway!
This is one of the best performances that I have ever heard! She maintains and supports every single note, you can hear it so clearly, it's truly amazing. My only criticism is that it is a tad fast. Not a problem per se, but some of the phrasing gets a little muddy, eg, the 5 minute mark and a few brief parts thereafter. But I must say, I am astounded at the beauty of this version.
One of the best performances in the rendering of this sonata, which raises difficult choices to the pianist. The greatest mistake is to interpret it as a preromantic score. HG avoids that and her rendering is perfect.
Exactly what I was thinking! My rhythmic sense is poor, so glad to learn I'm not completely nuts. I recently met her backstage for like 2 minutes. Besides being super nice she is also super smart, she thinks out everything. I'd love to hear her reasoning.
Must be a VERY bad recording - I do not remember hearing an experieced pianst playing so dreadfully. Most of her other recordings on You tube are fine.
Hélène Grimaud should really give up attempting to play Mozart. She simply doesn’t know how to do it. This performance is an interpretive massacre. It sounds like a hiccuping piano roll that occasionally undergoes fits of rubato. It lacks all sensitivity to classical style: tempos, dynamics, phrasing, and even the trills are painfully wayward and totally uncharacteristic of Mozart. In fact, her performance has the character of an improvisation - abusing Mozart to please herself.
I agree that her interpretation here is a little beyond the norm for Mozart, but it's not so bad that she should "give up attempting" to play Mozart. Don't you think she knows she's outside the norm? Of course a Chopinesque rubato in Mozart is "edgy." But she's an accomplished pianist who knows exactly what the traditional performance style is. Gould certainly did some non-traditional things with Bach (Did J.S. Bach hum along while he played?), and the limited liberties Grimaud takes here aren't disqualifying. Pletnev does some unusual things with pieces too, but for me he makes pieces I've heard many times "new"--and not in a bad way. Rather, I hear different aspects of the same music. If Grimaud is too far off script here, perhaps we should all "give up attempting to play Mozart" on the modern piano. Mozart certainly never played his compositions on a modern piano.
The thing is Hélène doesn't prefer Mozart that much. She is a great fan of Brahms as much as I've heard from her interviews. A pianist plays with intense passion, the composer he/she loves the most. Rubinstein can play Chopin well, same goes for Mitsuko Uchida- Mozart, Brendan- Beethoven and so on
This is terrible. She sounds like she is actually hitting the keys. She needs a much lighter touch for Mozart. If she played any heavier, she would drown out an orchestra.

Mozart through a romantic sensibility. Wonderful! Refreshing!! Loved it.
Obrigada, cara Helene, pela maravilhosa interpretação desta sonata!!! Saudações de Brasil!
If you feel you have to criticize music then you missed the whole point of music in the first place......that is all i have to add......

Absolut astonishing, Brava Helene!
Grata, Helene Grimaud, pelos sons lindos!Meu espírito exaltou-se!
Mozart...excellent, love it !
She is genius! She plays Mozart with strong opinion!
never heard such kind of Mozart before.....She surely thought a lot but I cannot tell whether in a right way or just opposite......
Interpretation & Technique are superb. #1
POR LA PRESION QUE EJERCE EN LA MEMBRANA PUEDO ASEGURAR QUE ESTO ES MARAVILLOSO Y REAL HELENE GRIMAUD EXCELENTE
MARAVILLOSA SALUDOS HELENE GRIMUAD
Bravissima!!!!

At they call her the best Mozart interpreter alive...

So strange. Three different tempos in the first 20 seconds. Perhaps she was suggesting turmoil.

Eccezionale.
Executou o primeiro movimento com muita rapidez e pouca emoção. Quanto ao resto, excelente, como sempre.
The version is right for me
I like Helene, a lot. Here the Andante is however much too slow
BUENOS DIAS HELENE GRIMAUD
Well........
Great, but a little rushy
Must be a VERY bad recording - I do not remember hearing an experieced pianst playing so dreadfully. Most of her other recordings on You tube are fine.
the description has another pianist listed, Jennifer Larmore, which would make sense because Helen Grimaud is ALOT better then this
Christopher Pilcher I think it is a mistake; it was played by Larmore not Grimaud
OMG is she drunk? What a ridiculous opening.
I like so much Madame Grimaud when plays Brahms or Schumann. Your Mozart not so much. Here plays too fast
Much too fast and frenetic

Wilhelm Backhaus could play Mozart to near perfection.

I agree with you
