Gotta love that they broke out everything for this album. Vocals , nylons, 6,7&8 strings, pinch harmonics, thumping, Meshuggah like chugs, and even a Dimebag sort of style solo for this song in particular. So much going on but it's still 100% Polyphia
pretty sure the solo is written and/or recorded by Wes Hauch of Alluvial, but I am only speculating. He did writethe beginning solo of Playing God though, this, Tim said that in the making of Playing God video, this is why I'm thinking they collaborated here again
I definitely wasnt surprised chino worked with them because he sounds a lot like this in Crosses, but the real shock is Scott and Tim managing to go back in forth between such absolute different tones styles and chord choices. I think chinos angel voice and clay ripping this absolute beats manages to hold them together somehow
This album blew me away with how diverse it shows Polyphia can be. You got dark lofi with Chino. Then bright pop goodness with Sophia in ABC. The whole band comes together so well 👏
I love all the different answers. Reverie and Chimera hit particularly hard for me. Though I can say, this is the first time I've liked anything related to the Deftones.
@Dragon Ball fans can't read Like them or not, there's plenty unique about what they're doing; there are very few artists that sound similar to them, and every one of them are derivative of Polyphia. I've seen you in Nik's comment section for literal years; there's no reason for you to be here if all you're going to do is spout takes that are not only always negative, but completely brainless.
@Dragon Ball fans can't read >fretboard noodling over 4/4 trap beats Please point me who else is doing this particular thing. No, seriously, i want more of this.
I feel like Chino's vocals can go well with almost anything at this point, especially after hearing this and all the "White Pony" Anniversary Remixes, I want more Chino vocals on EDM tracks 😂
When I heard Lamb of God's Embers for the first time the hairs stood up on my neck at Chinos end vox..best thing about it was because he wasn't mentioned on the track listing it hit me completely out the blue...surprise pikachu face was an understatement 😄
Polyphia mixed so many styles together on this album. On paper it sounds insane and shouldn’t work but hats off to them on making all these styles work together so perfectly. I haven’t been this addicted to a record in years.
What I love about this album is everyone I've spoke to has a different favorite track. I loved this but The Audacity is my favorite for sure. It's a fire album.
Chino has always been one of my favorite vocalists. This track is all I could have hoped this collab could have been and so much more. I need a whole album from Polyphia + Chino! Had this on repeat so much since it dropped :D
Bloodbath is my favorite song bc of the blend!! The structure of this album was (fresh new ideas and cool features, song Polyphia madness, and then ending it all with two legends in the back end of the album. Leaving THE guitar legend himself for the end of the album) this album is INSANELY GOOD and Polyphia did their thang AGAIN!! Two back to back amazing albums with high replay ability. Especially Bloodbath imo
This was definitely my most anticipated collaboration on the album, and I'll admit that even as a Deftones and Polyphia obsessive I was slightly worried that this might end up a shitshow. Very happy and not shocked that these great musicians pulled it off. Just knowing that almost every Chino project I have heard is kind of minimalist, wall of sound style songs which is the opposite of Polyphia's schtick had me a bit apprehensive but I should have known that both of these musical deities have massive range!
Personally, Chimera is my favorite but I love this song too. honestly the whole album is fire. I love that they're dabbling into 8 strings and djent stuff. they're actually becoming kinda heavy and Its too hot to handle
Literally same! It feels like Scott's voice on the album is with that metal AF distorted 7 string that he used in Ego Death. It felt more atmospheric than anything with Tim almost in the backseat which was super interesting.
I feel like this is Polyphia saying, "oh by the way, we slay other things too when we're bored." I don't know how the Chino collab happened but I love it. Tim is so smart business-wise. All of the collabs on this album are REALLY gonna get their name out there to SO many new fans. The Lil Wesr track is gonna put them in front of hip hop fans. The Vai track is gonna put them on front of old school guitar guys like Vai and Satch fans. There will be fewer people who don't know who they are than people who do wnow who they are after this album. And they deserve it. The whe band is amazing but Tim and Scott are the new guitar gods. There's no denying it whether you like them or not. Whether it was intended or not, Ego Death was the passing of the torch, the changing of the guard. This is where we are now and they make the decisions from here on out.
This is what real prog music is supposed to be, mixing genres and taking em apart to make something you never heard before. That being said it wasn't my favorite song but I respect that I've never heard anything like it
I have to say, I think "The Audacity" is probably my favorite track off this album. Didn't know it was possible to beat out Ego Death and Playing God, but Anomalie really brings something new and different to the table. Super fresh track.
Felt the same, this really feels like a late stage work that is a culmination rather than an evolution. Which is weird since judging by the unreleased stuff, there’s still a lot more evolution left in the tank.
This album proves that Polyphia can explore any kind of music without letting go of their musical roots (idk what I'm trying to say) but anyway they are one of the most talented musicians out there
The whole album is pure art. The flow of the whole album takes you on such a journey through genre blending every imaginable genre and yet is so cohesive and so polyphia. And not only do they blend their style with all different genres but they are doing it in very unexpected ways. Like when people talked about bringing rappers on board i guarantee they didn't imagine it in the way they actually did it. So brilliant. So creative. Makes music exciting
The album as a whole is honestly their best work to date. There’s literally a song for every genre. You want a rap song?, well there’s Chimera and Fuck Around and Find Out. You want some jazz?, there’s a song for that. Pop? Got it covered. Metal? Absolutely. Then you got the legend himself Steve Vai to work on a song with you guys. Then you got this gem of a song called Playing God that’s incredible. Definitely their finest work. I’ve had this album playing essentially nonstop since it came out. It’s been forever since I’ve listened to an album from start to finish.
1. Get better soon, man! 2. Yeah, this song made me melt a little bit too lol. It's one of those things that you only realize works when you hear it. It's beautiful.
To your point about the squad being core kids, Nik, my brother went to a Meshuggah show in Texas back in October and was in line for Meshuggah merch with drummer Clay. Wonder if the rest of the boys were there… I fucking loved Scott getting to rip some crunchy ass, down tuned, distorted riffs on this album. Especially on “Chimera”. It seems like they’re shifting their aesthetic, both sound wise and visually, to be a bit darker and I’m absolutely here for it.
This is my favorite Chino and the techno-groovy-industrial ambiance suits his voice so well. Reminds me a bit of Crosses, which is a very good thing. Nice feature!
Look, I don't think I'm being hyperbolic by saying that this track has Grammy potential all over it. There are multiple tracks on this album that could land a nom, but this track reminds me of the first time I heard Wax Simulacra by Mars Volta. Not the same energy but the same emotional response. The feeling like the world changed for me after hearing it.
For some reason they definitly played with my feels on this one, the pure "hot"ness in this song with the bait of heavyness that just made me crave some growls with the drums beatin off, would be perfect with just 1-3 seconds. Made me feel like a sucker for pain -.- Would be so perfect, soothing to a bit of chaos, they would make it just pure bliss.
Had this album for a month before it came out to review it and as soon as I heard this track I knew Nik would like it. Been looking forward to this vid!
the string of the last three songs on this album, chimera, bloodbath, ego death, is monumental, polyphia is changing the understanding of music mixing genres at 11/10 skill and creativity.
I love how we got 3 band styles in one sound! Of course we got the beautifully instrumental that is Polyphia, The smooth vocals that remind me of early Deftones, and then a solo that would make Dimebag Darrell proud!

Awesome track! But damn Nik, that censor bleep ripped my face off it was so damn loud! Headphone user beware! Hah😂 Love the low tuning, and they killed that bendyboi Mike Stringer style riffage, with those bouncyboi low bends, sick!

Hey Nik, please get well soon, greetings from Bavaria 🙂🙂
you should check out Chimera next, that one also CHONKS
No boomer bends! we use zoomer bends round these parts.
react to The Audacity next time maybe?
Can't pick between this one and Ego Death for my favorite

It's more satriani than dimebag

Definitely Dimebag inspired. Scott and Clay G have talked about how much they like Pantera on several occasions.
@@theparadoxwithin232 Scott said it was inspired by Dime and Wes in an article with Guitar World :) gotta love the whammys🤝
Yup
So like...how do we convince Chino to keep doing songs with them
Ask him to do so......
I'm sure he'd be fine with it.
❤️
I would definitely enjoy an ep or album that featured Chino on Polyphia songs.
More like, 'how do we convince Polyphia to keep doing songs with Chino?'
No Way. Let Polyphia collab once in a while. A permanent singer, even though he's good, will only lock Polyphia into a specific genre. No.
@@montreauxs Not necessarily, Deftones has wildly varying sounds across their Discography
Chino still sounds the same even after 30 years, he never ages! Reminds me of "Around the Fur" times.
30 years ? He's been at it for that long ? Damn
@J H My thoughts exactly
@@yannjoanno6933 Yeah Deftones formed in 1988.
Around the Fur….mmmmm. One of my favorite albums ever

Crosses is the tits
This album blew me away with how diverse it shows Polyphia can be. You got dark lofi with Chino. Then bright pop goodness with Sophia in ABC. The whole band comes together so well 👏
Yeah plus some electro jazz with anomalie and just some super classical/bossa nova, just nuts all across the board
Best song on the album easily for me.. Scott really shines in this track and mannnn, Chino's voice 👏👏👏👏
Same
For me its chimera, but this one comes really close. i feel like after some time, my favorite song on the album will change on a daily basis.
Same but my favorite section or part of the album is the entire R&B section with ABC into Memento Mori then Fuck Around.
Idk man something about Playing God and Neurotica just get me juiced up.
I love all the different answers. Reverie and Chimera hit particularly hard for me. Though I can say, this is the first time I've liked anything related to the Deftones.
Polyphia plus deftones is every metalhead’s dream
Polyphia has their unique renaissance/ muse sound + thall + djent + rap + bossa nova and the album somehow just works.
They even got flamenco and pop in there. Absolutely ridiculous.

Tim and Scott remembered they’re hardcore bois at their core with this album. Unexpected but welcome
Polyphia mixed so many styles together on this album. On paper it sounds insane and shouldn’t work but hats off to them on making all these styles work together so perfectly. I haven’t been this addicted to a record in years.
