  • High Altitude Balloon Flight, Oct. 4, 2011
    Call Sign KJ4IES
Project Team: Ernest Legg and Richard Jandrew
Objective: To launch a high altitude balloon with HD video camera and temperature sensors. Altitude and lat/long to be provided by GPS.
Launch Site: 10 miles west of Culpepper, VA at the Reva Volunteer Fire Station
Recovery Site: Doswell, VA, approx. 7 miles west of King's Dominion theme park
Flight Summary: Balloon ascended to an altitude in excess of 75,000 feet before bursting due to very low atmospheric pressure. Temperature fell as low as -47 degrees F. Hardware payload returned via 3 meter parachute constructed of rip-stop nylon. Total flight duration was 93 minutes; 68 minutes ascending and 25 minutes descending. Distance traveled over land was 54 miles.
Balloon system: A 1500 gram latex balloon was purchased from Scientific Sales, Inc. Balloons are sold by weight. This balloon was chosen because of the payload total weight. There were 2 packages tethered that weighed 6 pounds each. This follows FAA rules for unmanned amateur balloon flights. Hydrogen was used to fill the balloon as the cost of Helium is just too high. A 300 cubic foot cylinder and a reserve 80 cubic foot cylinder were rented from Airgas of Fredericksburg. A custom filling tube and hose were constructed and equipped with a shut-off valve. A large tarp covered the balloon during the fill. It was tied to the ground with nylon rope and tent stakes.
Payload Hardware: Two cameras were used: a Kodak Playsport ZX3 HD video camera with a 32 GB SDHC card, and a Canon SD1000 Powershot 7.1 Megapixel still camera. The Canon camera was loaded with special firmware called "CHDK" that allows for interval shooting. This was set for 1 exposure every 20 seconds. The Kodak video camera was set to record just prior to launch and continued to record well after touchdown. The Canon camera was redundant, and the videos from the Kodak Playsport turned out to be preferable.
For tracking, redundant GPS receivers were used. They were coupled with "Tiny Track" TNC modems. Both GPS modules and Tiny Tracks were purchased from Byonics Corp. The modulated audio containing the GPS information was formatted per APRS standard, a system used by Ham Radio Operators. The 2 separate APRS "packets" were transmitted to the ground on 2 meter band Handheld Transceivers at 5 watts. The frequencies were 144.390 MHz and 144.140 MHz. A homemade J-pole twin lead antenna was used with one transceiver. A half wave monopole whip was used for the second transceiver.
Two 11.1 lithium polymer batteries were used in parallel to power the payload. A custom telemetry module was constructed using an Atmel Atmega 328p microcontroller. The temperature sensor was a Maxim 1-wire device. Voltage monitoring was also performed using the ADC functions on the Atmega.
A secondary payload consisting of a stowed 6 meter Parafoil failed to deploy during descent. This was intended to auto-steer the payload to a desired field or clearing (vice landing in a forest or lake). Since only the initial parachute was in use, the payload did indeed land in a dense forest.
Ground Hardware: The recovery vehicle was equipped with a Kenwood DX-710 2 meter transceiver. A roof-mount antenna worked as expected. A backup handheld Yagi antenna was available if more gain was needed. The Kenwood radio send demodulated APRS data to 2 laptop PC's. One laptop was using "Balloon Track" and "AGWPE" packet engine. The payload position was plotted automatically in "Microsoft MapPoint 2004." The second laptop was using "UIVIEW32" and "Precision Mapping 2010" to also plot the payload's position. Both laptops successfully plotted the entire flight. The payload continued to transmit after touchdown. This enabled us to locate it after 1.5 hours of hiking through the woods. Many thanks to Mr. Jandrew for this effort.
Special thanks to Zach Kenny for his video editing and uploading to RUclips.

Was on a plane recently about 5 miles up and caught a very nice photo of a very flat horizon. At 30,000 feet, the horizon is 200 miles away, and the line of site across the horizon is at least 3 times longer. So I had a friendly debate on another video and was given this tool to see for myself that 30,000 feet was not high enough. Ironically, the tool he gave me did show curvature at 30,000 feet and so I ended the chat. But this video is rare. It’s not easy to find any non fish eye videos online of high altitude. People who call out makes and just go back and forth with no real data of their own are unfortunately ignorant. Here is the tool I was given by a globe believer and I will also take a photo of the curvature it shows you should see at 75,000 feet. On a side note, if you look at 250 miles up with the tool, where the ISS travels, the curvature seems to be on point with what NASA gives us. I’m not saying they aren’t lying to us like they did saying they went to the moon, but instead I’m saying at 25 miles up, you should see 1/10th of the curvature you see at the ISS height. But I don’t see that. Here’s the tool:

If anyone is watching this, salivating at the mouth, believing the earth is flat, just remind yourselves that this balloon goes up to around 15 miles. That's not high enough to see curvature on a globe with a 25000 mile circumference.
But who knows, maybe the Earth is flat. I'm just saying what I've read. Don't give a shit either way.

You can see it because the curve wil bend also in the wrong direction sometimes. USGS they believe the earth is a sphere ball. But at the same time they have a map from flat earth on their flag. Because they know it. Pilot byrd was the first voor america to go look voor the edges he found it. At that moment operation deep freeze started . Us military and scientist whent to examine there. They put fences, signs, maybe even booby traps for you not to pass. Enough evidence.

Why would it really mean anything to anyone today that people got burned for reading books 100 years ago ? Does that actually change anything today ?
Would the whole world fall apart if they had not been doing that ? Did we learn anything significant by people being burned back then ?
Did it help people today ? Did it help curing any deseases ? Prevent any wars ?
No. Well sure it might have helped along the way as far as religious freedom goes. But what does religion have to do with science ? nothing.

What I find most intriguing is that from point of take off to point of landing is a mere 75 miles land distance (if it is considered in as the crow flies). I would have thought that the balloon would be caught up by "jet stream" and run a distance further. Of course; in researching Betrand Picard's flight (16 hours?) the same or similar values of distance are charted...weird.

I used a straight edge throughout and never saw curvature, not even at 75,500 feet.
I looked up a horizon mileage tool and it said that at 74,000 feet, the horizon is 333 miles away. That's close to the widest point of Arizona. Based on the lines of latitude, Arizona takes up 6° of the 360°, if the earth was a globe. Six degrees of a globe should reveal a slight curve. No curve was visible in this video. Use a straight edge to confirm because angled views appear to be curved, but it is an optical illusion.

What do you mean "horizon line drop"? The horizon is a horizontal line, the drop is after the line, out of sight, that's why you don't see it. Point is: Earth is very very big. For all practical purposes it is flat to us, but that's a matter of being so tiny in relation to the magnitude of the Earth.

I have thought this for a long time. Maybe some of you flat earthers could give me some ideas. What difference would it make to anybody if they did admit that the earth was flat? Would our lives not be the same? Would we not have to get up and go to work everyday to make the money to pay our bills? I am just not sure what would be gained except a bunch of people would feel justified that they "knew it" all along. As I see it, this is just really a religious debate that would lead nowhere, no matter which way it went. I don't think that insulting someones intelligence is really a way to prove your point, it just makes you look classless and petty.

Well if you fancy knowing that you are limited in where you can go , what you can explore , and you can swallow being lied to all your life.. Even had family die in wars they were brainwashed or forced into going to .. all because they dont want you to know there is more land.. they'd rather control everyone one of us and keep the population down because we're growing.. on our tiny piece of earth. Perhaps that should bother you more. Sounds like some good reasons to start questioning one's perimeter and the war on oil I'd say.

    • @beanybway
      @beanybway 7 лет назад +3

Andrew McAllister, you say imagine the earth was flat nothing would change, well I disagree.
If the world is flat it means we have all been purposely lied to about this and thousands of other day to day things that rely on a globe earth.
Now why would we be lied to you ask? or what would they have to gain from keeping this from us? Well if the world if flat it pretty much proves gods existence, so if the people at the top where let's say satanist, devil worshippers or evil it would be in their interest to suppress the truth about the flat earth to stop people from turning to God.
Now I'm neither religious or a flat earther but i know through clear evidence that a lot of the top people running our world actually are satanists, they don't hide it, they even display the symbols of devil worship in their logos for all to see.
You should just for a second stop and wonder why the people running this world, with the most money, power and knowledge waste so much of their time, effort and money worshipping something that they know isn't real? Unless they know otherwise perhaps?
As I look in to this as a whole and research each aspect as I go along the most impossible explanation starts to become the most plausible.
Whatever the truth is I hope we all keep an open enough mind to finally discover it.
      Good vibes to all!

Andrew McAllister The flat earth proves that there is a creator. The entire "cosmic explosion " science religion theory would be totally thrown into the garbage. People would have to accept that there is a creator and that he is called God and he sent his son Jesus Christ to die for the sins of mankind. That is why there is a difference on whether or not the world is a spinning globe or a flat earth.
This video clearly shows zero curvature and I'm surprised to see comments that say they see curvature. Are people that brainwashed even when the proof is shown, they still cannot see with their eyes wide open. It's like believing in Jesus Christ, people see with their eyes wide open yet they still deny his existence.

The lense of the camera isn't powerful enough and doesn't absorb enough light. Also, this person launched the balloon in the day time, so the sun is shining on that part of Earth. The Earth reflects quite a bit of light and is very bright. It is hard to see stars if it is really bright.

If you don't believe what your eyes are seeing why not cast the video to your 53 inch wide screen lcd TV, expand the screen to full size and put a straight edge across it to prove to yourself what you are seeing is true. You may also notice the earth is completely stationary as described in the Bible 'the world cannot be moved' and despite the height of the camera being about 14 miles up above the earths surface the LINE of the horizon is at camera / eye view level, an impossibility on a ball no matter what it's size.
