"Race shouldn't matter" is Liberalism. Color is all that matters is Leftism. Not at all the same. In fact those two philosophies have been in conflict with each other since the 1700s.

Wtf are they suppose to do if they wanted to make castaway today?! "Is your film diverse enough?" "Well there's...a ball...does that count? No? I guess we'll have to recast Tom Hanks then."
Tom Hanks, poster child of a white privileged dude, should be axed then, right? And Wilson (the ball) is too white. They'd better ban the movie now and bring in a basketball instead. It's brown

People want to be hired period. Kind hard to be hired if people don't make an effort to look for talent where they normally don't. Fuck isn't that the point of most feel good movies of poor kids who were ignored because they weren't given the same chances?
That's the dumbest excuse ever. Its intention is to expand and consider talents beyond an existing discrimating power structure. Same surface argument against equity in a democracy because of the myth of meritocracy and American exceptionalism.

Hollywood used to be a way for great artists to gather and become financial successes in a free market with lots of big investors taking risks on young visionaries. Nowadays all the ideas are played out, the audience aware of tropes and meta-meta-meta commentary. It's not shocked or surprised by anything and has a thousand references to compare each idea with similar ideas. Nothing is fresh and so only sequels are being produced. Conformity to the Chinese market while totally failing at virtue signaling to the US public is not only pathetic, it's basically open treason and a declaration of war against western values in favor of socialist capitalism. The fuck is happening? Have the chinese already won? Sometimes I think the war has ended a few years ago and we have capitulated in secret.
The only race being held back IN PRINT (with legally binding contracts) is white people. Whether it's at award shows, jobs, schools, anywhere. It's always a white person who has to give something up, and it's all in WRITING so PROOF is readily available. Anyone who still believes this is fantasy I can show you the legal documents surrounding affirmation action programs. I can show you the documents for how schools select students for university. Bill Maher just showed you the documents for how Hollywood selects movies for awards.
When 5 decades ago during the first Equal Opportunity legislation my employer gave me the job of recording the data. The CEO joked that to improve our numbers he would be glad to hire a female black wounded disabled lesbian Vietnam vet because we could count her 5 times. Our society has improved a lot since then, but still our "CEO" (ex-president) gets wink-and-nod approval to grab women by the pussy, and 74 million people voted for him anyway. Go figure.
That last part hits home for me. Back in university some of my classmates overheard the higher-ups complaining that there weren't enough minorities in our program. Hearing this, while already dealing depression and feelings of worthlessness, I couldn't help but wonder "did I only get accepted because of my foreign name? Maybe I wasn't actually good enough." Getting into such a competitive program had been a moment of pride at the time, but to this day I wonder if I actually got in on my own merit or just because my parents aren't White.
It is not yours to feel bad about, yet for those whose choices they themselves allow to be diluted with bias, favor bias or cancel bias included (hey an accidental pun!) My brother checked the "black" box on his application to Ryder College in NJ, way back in 1973 - very vivid times for causes, mostly- and he is mostly Ladino Gypsy, Sephardic, mostly like me, same mom, so he also is 1/2 white, I pass, so it's alright. I take issue now and then, yet only if I slip or feel any good can come of it. My brother did get his full "quota based acceptance" with grants for such the same. It was that he threatened to sue the school if they were biased, just because he checked the wrong box!
Bill is spot on. Schindler’s List wouldn’t even be nominated because the cast is the wrong race according to the Academy. Isn’t that ironic. A movie about the horrors of racial identity would be shunned by Hollywood because of the race of the people in the movie. Quotas are the death of creativity.
Ok sure, it wouldn't have made the cut but why not focus on the future? We can easily have more diverse films that are just as impactful. Society will continue to change and we need to get with the program.
The Movie Hangout can you imagine taking Art class in college while trying to teach kids to express themselves creatively while also slamming a bunch of minority regulations into their own art?

We're headed to be Nazi Germany 2.0. When people ask how the cult of Nazism took hold, take a good look at what's happening here right now. Now, all we need is the leader to spark the keg.
Politics and Culture are now one and the same. Dividing the ideals is power, and combining them is war. Understanding both as seperate values is growth.
I remember a segment where he joked about white male suicide numbers going up and his audience was howling laughing. A couple minutes later he made a weave joke about black women and got booed.
I'm confused. Does 'woke' mean that you believe in covid? Or that Biden won the election? My understanding of the use of the word is opposite. To me, 10% of the audience is woke, the other 90% are just sheeples thinking they're in the Colbert studio.
What you Cons never seem to get is that Bill doesn’t have an Ultra Liberal audience. He’s too controversial and rough around the edges for them. His audience is for Democrats that are Left of Center and even Moderates. In other words...Smart people.
The Schindler's List joke hit way too close to home for the liberals in the audience, at that moment they realized their behavior is more in line with Nazis than they previously thought.
“People don’t want to be hired because they filled a quota, they wanna be hired because they’re good.” I’ve been on the receiving end of this horse hit. Bill is 100% correct.
A lot of people, ''whites'' included would be happy for any ''given'' good job. Only a minority of ALL ambitious people would feel somehow unfulfilled if ''privileged''. Kamala H. was chosen for her coloured female genitals. She does not feel bad at all about her '' given'' top job''. Anyone can see she is not up to the most important job in the world.
Julie W. I think that they don’t actually feel guilt. They have big egos, and they get off by trying to upstage each other over who is the most woke. Then they look down on others who won’t take the pandering to minorities as far as them, resulting in their self-righteousness being satisfied. All this “white privilege” stuff is nonsense anyways. Work hard enough and anyone can achieve what they want in this day and age. Don’t complain about the past, focus on the present and future, work hard, take care of your family. That’s why Nigerian immigrants do vastly better in America than Black Americans who have been here for several generations. They focus on a close family unit, are religious, and promote working hard, taking multiple jobs if necessary, doing whatever it takes to build a bright future.

Being honest, most movies on the past 20years already qualify, if you look closely the requarements are not that hard to follow, like in the diversity requirements you don't need the main cast to be diverse you only need the crew/producers and 30% of the extras and secondary cast to be, only need 2/4 of the requarements are needed there not all, most big studios already qualify. Movies like the Irishman would qualify because of the few women excutive in high position, the staff that have minorities, the only ones that would have a hard time are smaller indie studios

Napoleon • we shouldn't conflate artistic integrity with diversity. It is ridiculous to compare "forced" diversity in a movie with what took place during the Civil Rights movement. Do you think the black students who were forced upon the university felt degraded? No. They were proud to finally be given the opportunity for higher education that they deserved all along. They also had to fear for their lives. If you think Kamala Harris feels degraded because you think she was chosen to meet a quota, your sadly mistaken. She has been given the opportunity to prove that a woman of color can do the job; there's no doubt she can. I worked at an historically black university and their were racist attitudes by blacks and whites, but mostly everyone was appreciated for their abilities and work ethic. 5:58 I swear this is the point where Bill thinks "can I please go back to filming these in my backyard so I can get through one point without my audience breaking out on the wrong beat?"
think the central problem is the tension between inclusion vs pandering. Of course you want diversity, but when it's forced, all it is is pandering. You lose the ability to judge art or anything any other way
No, you do not want diversity. You want to reward excellent artists. If it's not diverse, then it's not diverse and that's it. The desire of diversity is inherently pandering.
I think the real goal isn't even inclusion itself but to reward talent and great art; the real problem is how much we judge talent and great art is filtered by our biases, which undoubtedly include racial, gender, etc. biases. Have films made by black directors and filled with black actors historically just been less artistic with less talent? Or have organizations like the Academy just been filled with racially biased voters that ignored them? Certainly we can swing too far the other way and start demanding inclusion and creating virtue check lists as a way to combat these biases, but then it does indeed feel like pandering. What's the optimal solution though? I think just telling people "judge merit" doesn't work. Everyone says they agree with MLK yet we still see huge disparities between groups even in scientific studies where we control for other environmental factors. So if people left to their own devices doesn't work, and forcing quotas doesn't work, what does?

But that is not what's happening here. It's a "straw man" argument. If that happens in a Black majority country, your argument is valid - but then I would say, it is not entirely negative to include other kinds of demographic in a black majority country. Also, being nominated is not the same as banning art making.
Dean Ismail his argument isn’t a straw man. A straw man is distorting or falsely representing a position and arguing that position. That’s not what is being done here the OP is making and analogy. He is comparing this situation to and another and applying his argument to that. The fallacy he is making is false analogy. A straw man would be if he said this was wokeness then defined wokeness in a untrue or unfaithful way. To clarify I don’t think the OPs argument is a false analogy. I think it’s framed poorly. However if discriminatory practices are deontologically wrong then any practice that discriminated against any group is also wrong and his point stands.

I can't think of anytime I have watched the Oscars. I don't understand the reason why people care about who gets an award for a movie they were a part of. If I'm interested in a movie I will watch it and I don't care who is in it or who is directing it and if I like it I will watch it multiple times.
I'd argue that a lot of the winners (or nominees), especially for the typical categories (Best Picture, Screenplay, Director), are legitimately good films. does that mean that I agree with every one receiving the award. of course not. but imo the amount of actually bad movies receiving those accolades is very small.
Let's think about this. Imagine that a movie stars a lesbian actress who has chosen not to let the world know about who she sleeps with. Now, the production company want the movie nominated for an Oscar so they tell her "we have to tell the Academy about you being gay, is that ok?" So the actress now have the choice of informing the world of her sexual orientation or missing the biggest career opportunity of her life. How is that morally different from when gay actors did not dare to tell people they were gay in order to have a career?
Indeed. I think a lot of the "diversity is everything" crowd forgets that not all of us want to talk openly about our sexuality. I think part of this is because the idea of "personal privacy" seems more like a novelty. After all, people are putting out the most intimate details of their lives on social media every day, so why not tell the world your sexuality? It's really quite foolish as well as, potentially, harmful.
Lady Tsuki Isn’t it ironic that Hollywood from it’s beginnings up till a few years ago felt exactly that way. During the ‘40s it was nobodies godamned business who Marlene Dietrich slept with. Only creeps and J. Edgar Hoover paid attention to those things. How far we’ve fallen.

That's the real reason Pelosi is talking about the 25th Amendment. Biden will be the shortest serving US President in history, replaced by one of the most far left politicians in our government. The question everyone needs to ask themselves is, "Do I hate Trump enough to give this "left" the reigns to the entire country for 4 whole years?" You do know what that left will do with the country if they're given that much power, don't you? They'll insure they never lose that power, and talk about elections beyond 2020 will be a joke. There won't be any fair, honest elections. They'll flood the country and get millions of more votes just by bribing migrants. That country you remember growing up will be no more. It's happened many times before throughout the world. The far left, socialism/communism screaming extremists we have in America are no less insane or capable of horrific acts against people, than the one's you've read about in history books. The Oscars lost meaning when the OscarsSowhite exposed the racial bias in the award, where mediocre films and performances where getting nominated with white people over great films directed with black lead characters. It showed the voters for the Oscars where 93% white and over 60, making it nearly impossible for films with non-white characters to get nominated because old white people only want to see films with white people. Hollywood has lost it. Give awards to those that deserve it the most. It's not about race or sex etc. It's about quality of work.

Go figure.
Name a deaf black lesbian in a wheelchair? I've never seen one that I am aware of.
It is not yours to feel bad about, yet for those whose choices they themselves allow to be diluted with bias, favor bias or cancel bias included (hey an accidental pun!) I take issue now and then, yet only if I slip or feel any good can come of it. My brother did get his full "quota based acceptance" with grants for such the same. It was that he threatened to sue the school if they were biased, just because he checked the wrong box!
Don't feel bad. You had no control over it.

think the central problem is the tension between inclusion vs pandering.
Of course you want diversity, but when it's forced, all it is is pandering. You lose the ability to judge art or anything any other way
Speak
No, you do not want diversity. You want to reward excellent artists. If it's not diverse, then it's not diverse and that's it. The desire of diversity is inherently pandering.
I agree. Art can not come with rules, it defeats the purpose of creativity.

Imagine if Oscars said "if its only black people in the movie it cant get nominated" thats another story for feminists
But that is not what's happening here. It's a "straw man" argument. If that happens in a Black majority country, your argument is valid - but then I would say, it is not entirely negative to include other kinds of demographic in a black majority country. Also, being nominated is not the same as banning art making.
@@hoxtondean9855 i get whqt you tryna say
@@hoxtondean9855 Demographics has nothing to do with racism. Stop thinking this "new" distorted meaning is correct.

Now, the production company want the movie nominated for an Oscar so they tell her "we have to tell the Academy about you being gay, is that ok?"
So the actress now have the choice of informing the world of her sexual orientation or missing the biggest career opportunity of her life.
How is that morally different from when gay actors did not dare to tell people they were gay in order to have a career?
That is so fuck...not fair on the actress at all.
Lady Tsuki
Isn’t it ironic that Hollywood from it’s beginnings up till a few years ago felt exactly that way. During the ‘40s it was nobodies godamned business who Marlene Dietrich slept with. Only creeps and J. Edgar Hoover paid attention to those things. How far we’ve fallen.
@@Ckom-Tunes Yeah, that's very true. I also see that as a sort of micro view of society as a whole. Now, EVERYTHING is our business (or so we think). As a relatively private person (which gets me yelled at plenty heh), it's quite annoying. That left you're talking about is asking for your vote in November. Biden is no moderate, and even if he was, Kamala is waiting in the wing to take his place to ensure the most radical left agenda is carried out.
We CAN absolutely become the next chapter in some history book people read in the future, adding our country to the list of countries who've done things to their own people that seem almost unimaginable. And it always started with a false demonization of the nation, a branding of hatred for the other side driven by the media, and a shifting to "transforming" the country in the name of equality and justice. And what you end up with is the exact opposite. These people you think just want to ban plastic straws, will actually cheer if you're shot in the head in the middle of the street.

Ever since then the viewership for the Oscars has plummeted as people realise it is an old white people award and not a judge of quality.
