This trademark McKenna medley includes: 1. My Funny Valentine 2. Blue Moon 3. The Blue Room 4. The Lady Is a Tramp and 5. Have You Met Miss Jones Thanks for the post and RIP Dave, heres hoping more of your wonderful work will percolate onto youtube!
Ahh....so nice to hear Dave again. If I close my eyes I'm almost back at the Copley twenty years ago. As a piano player, Dave's stuff was always particularly appealing to me. Choice changes, that left hand, so perfect whether walking, comping, or pumping out those four to the bar figures, the right hand runs and his gorgeous phrasing I recall seeing him walking down Comm Ave after Red Sox games in the mid 80s. Even if the Sox had played poorly that day, Dave never did. He was always right on!
One of the greatest musicians who ever lived. He played from the heart, every part of the heart and every note came from there. This divine musical spirit came with an enormous background of musical knowledge, every harmony more beautiful than perfect, every gesture from a rich life experiential world of a million night clubs, a million musical collaborators of every instrument and voice, and of one hundred million souls in love with love, music and life.
Dave was a kind of blue collar genius...----when he played 6 nights a week in Seattle I was always amazed at how many of the "hippest" jazzers were there...and they didn't leave after a single set!
More great stuff from my favorite pianist, and there are so many great pianists. I never got to hear him live; my wife bought a couple of his disks in 2009, the year after he died.
His walking left hand is legend. As a result, he is often remembered as a marvelous two handed pianist. But the real truth is that he was in actuality a ten handed pianist, because not only could he do anything and everything that he wanted but each finger had a life of its own. I have never heard that kind of keyboard playing from anyone else.
Man, RIP Dave...One of my very favorite piano players of any genre. His incredible sense of time, his ability to swing his ass off, and his wonderful dynamics. His music will continue to please the rest of us, thank GOD!
thank you for these, the piano was a limb to him, at one with it. I heard he would listen to baseball games on radio propped up on piano, same time while playing gigs.
My friend Myron Jones said, "He looks more like the guy that would move the piano than the guy who plays the piano, but he swings like crazy." Songs: 1) My Funny Valentine, 2) Blue Moon. I don't recognize the third one. 4) The Lady is a Tramp, 5) the start of Have You Met Miss Jones?

I had an old Dave McKenna album, one of the songs was "Don't Be Blue" by Michael Franks. Anyone have a link to that?
Dave loved that song.
