I read The Gulag Archipelago when I was 14 years old. That book made me grow up sooner than I should have to the horrors of the world and man kind. Stalin and his henchmen were monsters
I had to read a 'day in the life' at school when I was 14... It was a complete waste of time, because it meant nothing to me, and the teacher had no idea how to make it meaningful. C'est la vie.
I was of similar age when I got the second volume into my hand and didn't want to stop reading. I found the first and third volume in our library soon after and read them all. Some memories from that reading have stayed with me for decades.
Very good to hear his voice and see him talk. Since 1970 I have read nearly everything he wrote, partly many times over. But all the time I find new stuff, because translations are lagging behind. Soon March and April 17 will be finally translated into English too.
Excellent documentary, beautiful production, and great for the extended, uninterrupted speaking of AS. Am near finished with the second volume of GA. Monumental! Truly a great man!

Good documentary, but the English speaking narrator just butchered all the Russian names of people and places. The cellist's name is Rostropovich, pronounced Rahs-trah-po-vich with emphasis on the third syllable.
Two Hundred Years Together is out of course in the original Russian as well as in French and German. With respect to an English edition-an authorized translation of the full work is in progress and scheduled for publication in 2024.

The 90's were an appalling time, Putin gets support for stabilising thinks and controlling the oligarchs who in the nineties acted like bandits and indeed very often had mafia connections. On top of this Putin is a Russian nationalist, and at the very least pretends to be deeply orthodox, the hope of the Russian right is that he will hand over power to a Romanov heir and then the work of destroying every vestige of the Soviet Union can begin, and the old system brought back. Cossacks and other groups are often aligned with this and display it by wearing imperial uniforms and carrying the old imperial flag, other nationalist groups deify the wartime struggle and thus glorify the regime of the time and hate the monarchists and nobles of the white movement for siding with the Germans during the war. Putin tries to balance both sides as he doesn't want to alienate either, especially when many of the older generation from which he draws his support are nostalgic for Soviet times and proud of the sacrifice of the war generation, and indeed Putin is very much one of that group himself, as has become obvious in some of his statements about the current war.
Solzhenitsyn fought in the Second World War, was sent to the Gulag, and developed cancer, and still made it to 89 years old. What a survivor.
What a revival?
*At school the crucifix I wore was torn from my neck : it was a way of saying, Look at him, he's the enemy.*

Amazing man who's inspired me since I first saw him in the early seventies. Thank you so much for an amazing documentary , respect : )
Mr Solzhenitsyn is spot on in his condemnation of the laziness and mediocrity of most Western journalists including the self-important BBC.
