    yup, it is pretty crazy to think that they only had one #1. but you also have to remember that there were other huge bands like queen, led zeppelin, black sabbath, etc that were sweeping up the charts at the time lol 😂

    • @trashandcheese3636
      @trashandcheese3636 Год назад

      In the UK they didn't release many singles because proper rock bands just didn't release singles in the '70s - singles were the medium for pop and easy-listening. So, for instance, Comfortably Numb wasn't a "hit" because it wasn't a single.

      @Far Stox You clearly need to pay better attention to the lyrics. It's a beautifully tragic story of a man who doesn't know how to deal with trauma and quite literally loses his sanity and sense of who he is. Then in the middle of his mania he understands he was the issue the whole time. He realizes he needs to take responsibility for his actions and breaks down his wall. I relate to the story because I feel like I've gone down a similar path but on a smaller scale. I'm still trying to break down my wall.

    There was a great BBC documentary on Pink Floyd from 2007 that was on RUclips called “Which One’s Pink?” but I think they pulled it down. That would have given you an excellent idea of what the band members thoughts as well as general history.

    Pink Floyd wasn't about singles. They were an album band if ever there was one. Their songs skewed too long, too dark, too experimental for top 40 radio. But man did they sell the hell out of some albums!! They were about concepts and storytelling that unfolded over the course of an entire album. This was their superpower.
    That doc was painfully brief.

    Pink Floyd, like Led Zeppelin were an album band so only released singles sporadically. No 1 in the singles chart doesn't mean as much as producing whole albums of complete genius in my opinion.
    Bands like Queen were more prolific in producing hit singles as opposed to legendary albums.
    That's why The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are the top 3 best selling bands ever because they all produced a run of masterpiece albums in succession. I highly recommend going back to the start of Pink Floyd's catalogue. Peace

    Pink Floyd stopped trying to make radio singles in 1968. Syd was the pop singles guy. Once he left, they struggled to make a popular pop song so they gave up and started going towards experimental long songs. They kept refining and found what worked and what didn’t. You start seeing this evolution through their albums.

    Was never a fan of the "Pre - Meddle" Pink Floyd..... EXCEPT..... "The Nile Song" which early '69 has to be one of the first "proto-metal" tracks, being released months before Black Sabbath brought out their first album Black Sabbath.
    Not a style Floyd would stick with but still pretty awesome 😉

    A few comments:
    1. Pink Floyd convened in London but are properly considered a Cambridge band - because that's where they all came from.
    2. Comfortably Numb wasn't a "hit" because it wasn't released as a single - simple as that.
    3. Albums like Atom Heart Mother and especially Ummagumma - along with lesser-known, improv-oriented recordings like the John Latham Session or the early performances of The Man And The Journey - separate the hardcores from the fellow-travellers because they show Pink Floyd's connection to the 1960s schools of performance art and free-improvisation-as-a-genre. Basically, it's easier to appreciate that stuff (and recognise its limitations) if you know who Evan Parker and Steve Stapleton are, and can name more than one member of the Fluxus Group. People who don't know tend to appear on RUclips listening to it and spouting insulting nonsense like "they must have been on drugs, only mad dopeheads do this sort of thing".

    Pink Floyd’s music style really did not “fit in” with the typical “Top 40” parameters, especially with regard to song length. The longer a song is, the less chance it will receive any airplay, especially if it is 4 minutes or more.

    It was a trend among big groups to focus on albums, and the more progressive you were as a band, the more you were not interested in hits. And the music style with all the odd chord changes and odd rhythm patterns made it not to be hit material. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody was an exception because despite their manager's advice, they were persistent to release it as a single.

  • @MsCosmosnut
    @MsCosmosnut 2 года назад

    The music industry has time limit standards for radio play. Most progressive rock albums failed to produce songs that made the pop charts due to the length of the songs.

    Crazy to think that Dark Side was their 7th (I think?) album and their first breakthrough album. And then they still kept getting better after that. A good lesson in sticking with what you love.
    I think you can view their career in four phases: the Syd Barrett era (including the Saucerful album which Syd barely appears on. It is still in that style). Then their experimental era, their next three or four albums). Then the classic era, which you could start at with Meddle but really it’s their four huge albums from Dark Side to the Wall. Final Cut was basically a companion to the Wall but with even less input from the other band members. The cover even said something like “by Roger Waters, performed by Pink Floyd.” Then the fourth and final era, the David Gilmour led band. All are great in their own way but they are different. But still always inspired by their founder Syd. And yes, some of those songs, like Comfortable Numb, have only grown more popular over the years. They never really released “singles” which explains why they only had one #1 song. They didn’t need to try for that. People bought their albums anyway.
