How to Play Piano Man by Billy Joel (Piano Tutorial)

- If there is one song that EVERY piano player should know, it’s "Piano Man"! Even if you hate the song, it’s a good idea to know how to play it. If you ever sit down at a piano in front of people, there’s a good chance someone will request "Piano Man". They’ll be happy to sing it, but you’ll have to play.
The story behind the song is very cool. Billy Joel wrote it as a semi-autobiographical story of his time as a piano player in a bar in L. A and it is the song that really put him on the map as an artist.
There aren't too many parts to this song. As you'll see, the verse and chorus follow a very similar chord progression.
The song begins with a bit of a wild and crazy intro riff. For simplicity's sake, I’ve not included this riff for this version of the lesson but you will see it in the downloadable notation in case you want to give it a try yourself. We've also included the notation for the piano solo, but I haven't covered that here. I wanted to keep this lesson relatively simple and achievable!

I've been playing piano by ear for years but I'm only mediocre, I'm not good. You're the perfect teacher for me. I'm so glad I found your channel.
I just love your lessons, so clear and well explained. Your voice sounds really kind as well...
Love your instruction and methods. I am a way old guy trying to teach myself to play piano; not professionally, not in front of an audience, just for me to get lost in the music. I really appreciate your videos and all the effort you put in to help others love the music.
Love your teaching style! Thank you for this!
Thanks I love this song watched now to try.
Once again you nailed it Lisa!! Thanks for this piece!! I love it!
So glad you had fun with this Gloria!
Love this tutorial! Great song!
I‘ve been watching your lessons quite a while now. And your positive attitude makes it really fun to learn. Thank you so much. As you come up with entire popular songs and lead sheets at a beginners level now, it‘s even more motivating. Nice songs with a feasable voicing - that‘s really great. Keep it up!
Wow! Thank you so much for your kind words- i'm glad you are enjoying the lessons!!
Thank you so much, your videos have inspired me to sit back down at my piano. I needed this.
That's so awesome to hear!! Thanks!
This song always makes me smile and tingle but I always thought it must be so hard to play, Lisa you have given me hope lol..... I love ur voice by the way, please play the piece along with u singing it... Thanks again.
Love this
My god your energy is amazing and contagious even through a screen!
I used your guide to learn Bohemian Rhapsody this past week, and wow was it wonderful. I’ve never been able to get my left hand into a song.
Your format for teaching is wonderful, and-Lisa-your teaching is fantastic. I cannot read sheet music, but found it *extremely* helpful while learning the song. Made timing my left hand actually possible.
Thank you for the help, and I hope you continue to make these.
I’d also like to seperately thank you for providing the sheet music for free, as you had absolutely no obligation to do so.
Awww so so happy to help! The goal is to help people play the piano and love the piano :)
Great job explaining👍. Nice singing voice also!
Very nice tutorial! I play it with the harp in the neck holder, love the song. In the "strong" part of the song, I would recommend to play double stops / half chords on the right hand for melody, for harmony emphasis. Cheers!
Me: Yes! I think I got it! *plays song

I LOVE IT.... THANKS!!!
Thank you so much for all the care and everything you do to help, I'm going to go right away to your site and sign on to become a member of your school :)
You are heaven sent!!!!
Great tutorial. Billy wrote the song based on a regular gig he had at a bar in Los Angeles. All of the characters in the song are people he encountered there. On a side note he eventually married the waitress practicing politics, she was his first wife.
ok
Brilliant
A beautiful song. Thank You!
Have fun playing it!
This is awesome!! ❤️❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!

Happy to help :)!
Very nice tutorial !
Thanks :)!
Thank you so much
You are welcome :)
I love 💕 it
Trying to learn this song after i learned The Scientist with your Video. Timing is pretty rough, i feel like it will take me long to put left and right hand together. 😓
Never my 2hands shall meet! Hard for an absolute beginner but cool.
Beautyful Voice :))
Thank you :)!
I, like everyone else, love the way Lisa teaches. Very infectious. Very informative. I finally figured out inversions on one of her other videos. One thing I would like to see (might be just me) is the notes written somewhere on the screen for some of the movements. I find when I try to keep up with the graphic (which is also very good) I have to keep repeatedly view the section to get the notes and sequence right. Otherwise perfect.
Thanks for the lesson. I feel it went little too quick at 7.09 onwards
AmazingLisa♡
I made 2 more accounts specifically to like this video 3 times, thank you soooooo goddamn much
Lisa is the queen of embellishments.

U r best and beautiful 😻
Hi Lisa, Could you do a lesson on SOUNDS OF SILENCE by Simon and Garfunkel. Thank you so much!!
It misses the introduction of the song but apart from that it was perfect
We've got the intro in the sheet music for you and we teach that part of the song (and the bridge/solo) in full in our pianote members area :)
For £30/month....sure
Hi can You make video tutorial for Boggie woogie Stomp and Boogie Woogie river. we love that fast songs.
Hi, i want to learn this..where can i get the lead sheet? thank you in,advance
I just can't get the hands together! How do you do it
I hope you can do it now but if not here's a tip that helped me. Don't think of it as playing 2 hands together instead playing a rhythm where your hands go back and forth and sometimes at the same time. In pop songs for example, it's usually left hand chord on left followed by some keys in that scale, then another left hand chord, etc. Also when reading sheet music, practice and master each hand separately then together but without sheet music
@@deepdive1338 Thanks mate, actually helps!
A little hard to follow for me, but you know positive reviews
Brazil
Hi, let me repeat my question. Is it possible to make arpeggio by left hand and improvise by right hand without losing the rhythm? How much time could it take from the level when you can do it separately?
Hi Pavel, yes it would be possible. As for how long it would take to put it together, I cannot answer that for you. It really depends on your practice!
I learned Halleluya thanks to you Lisa, workin on it to be more harmonious so my piano doesnt think am mad at him. This song may be next.
Is it normal for my left hand to hurt a bit? I practice like 3 hours a day
If your hand hurts you should definitely take more breaks and remember to do some stretches as well! Here's a video on some piano Warm-ups to make sure your hand doesn't hurt when you practice! :) ruclips.net/video/TcJYCtWZat4/видео.html
I gotta say that not adding how to sync both hands, which is obviously the hardest part of this song makes no sense to me.
Ur amazing!!! It would be so cool if u food do a tutorial for before you go , by Lewis capaldi
Première biographie française : Billy Joel l'histoire du Piano Man (Camion Blanc).
Hey! Can someone tell me the simple chord progression?
Where's the intro? Did I miss it or did you go right into the first verse?
B4
*when I didn’t get it* “I got it!” But absolutely fails it
I wish the LEFT hand instructions could be a LOT slower, since we’ve already got the sheet music to read for right hand. Don’t know about anyone else, but I’d like to be able to note what you’re doing with the LEFT. But you go too fast to take notes on left. :(
A question in regards to the vocals. How do you get melodies to sound like the words if that makes sense?
Like how do I sing the words? I'm sorry I'm not sure I understand the question.
@@PianoteOfficial how do you get the melody to match/sound similar to the words to a song as you would be writing it.
So for example you have the words ' this is Jack's house' how do you get a melody to sound like those words as you construct the melody.
Robin?
Uf i found the notation pretty hard as i am used for left and right hand notes. I dont understand the left hand you are playing :/
👏🎖🎖🎖👏🤙🎼🎹
i can play the right hand... the left hand.. well.. *cries in piano*
Is this how billy Joel plays it exactly?
Hey, please cover some song and sing it. Your voice is quite something 😁
Awww thanks Anderian!
OMG, you're so cute!
I can’t do two hands 😭
Practice one hand at a time until you can do each hand really well, then start with two hands SLOWLY!
I watch on TV. No way to slow down the play back. My phone is way too small to watch on. Yes, it will slow down on phone, but not when it is cast. Please have a slow version. I am sure I am not the only one that cast videos to learn.
mini ladd
I just can't play with two hands
Ok ok, what is whispered at the very start of the video? Hidden messages?
Haha that's the sound effect of the piano being drawn :) It's like a pencil or crayon sound effect.
I can't read the lead sheet. I'm illiterate. Help.
If you can't read the sheet, that is okay- watch the keys and my hands and then try to replicate on your piano :)
I dont understand the lead sheet...... HELP
Ok! Which part don't you understand? FYI here's a better link to it: pianote.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/pdf/Piano-Man-LeadSheet.pdf
The lead sheet shows the melody notated, with the chords written above the page. Are there some chords you don't quite know? Or is it the melody notes?
There are quite a few slash chords in this song (eg. F/A) - we have a lesson on those here: ruclips.net/video/YW0FsV5CI_U/видео.html
wisecrack
Next up lesson play the harmonica and sing with it while playing it on the piano.

30 quid/month for an online course where 10000 people subscribed...and you take care of every members individually? Really...
Come on
Nope from me
I live your videoes I really do but this level of greed is just nonsense
I keep watching your videos and just learn myself for fun and I not gonna get into a £30 pulloff subscription when noone cares how I am developing and just get frustrated...keep up you doing good job
I learned Ed Sheeran perfect just because of you and started to feel way better in my life so a big thanks for that ;)
Hey there! First of all I'm so happy you learned "Perfect"! It's such a beautiful song :)
And as for our membership, you can TOTALLY get personal support. As much as you need (or as little as you want). All our lessons are video lessons where we have an online chat forum for each lessons. I also do weekly live Q&A lessons and weekly student reviews. So if you're a student who WANTS personal feedback, you can film a video of yourself and send it in, and I will provide personal feedback to your video during the live lesson.
It seems to work really well for the members who want that. But many don't and just enjoy the video lessons and all our song tutorials!
As for the price, it's in USD so it's more like 24 pounds in the UK. That's unlimited access to ALL the lessons, song tutorials and live sessions, which I think is great value. It's less than the average price of ONE tradition piano lesson.
Good luck with your progress and I do hope you keep finding our free videos useful!
@@PianoteOfficial You right. I was an ahole. Sorry I just got frustrated. thanks for your reply
Why does no one teach the original version? I don't want your made up version, I want the original.
Very good lesson but I do not understand why all those who do tutorials talk too much, speak less please, thank you
There are some concepts that we feel need explaining, and not everyone who watches these lessons are at the same skill level. We try to keep it moving and focused on the music as much as possible!
You have an annoying habit of breaking off every time you put together a section of notes you just showed how to play. You should play the entire song altogether first and then break it down.
Sorry if that's annoying! Because it's a song tutorial (not a performance) I feel like it makes more sense to stop and go over the different sections. But we have started including full performances at the end of our most recent tutorials! Thanks for the tip
@@PianoteOfficial I apologize if i sounded rude. Tutorials works different ways for different people. Many will find your method helpful. I just meant to say that in playing the song in full´, one would know what keys to hit in advance...in sort, to recognize it better. That would work for me. Your way of playing is better than most...i just have a hard time to remember what keys to hit if there are too many breakdowns.
You are very attractive, however I can not learn if the camera man keeps putting the camera on you and not the piano keys. I do wish you could slow video down. I have to keep stopping and starting. I can't do more than 4 measures in an hour. Way too much time. If you slowed video...I could probably at least get a page in. Other learners must have the same problem. You play too fast and me hearing you play doesn't help me learn.
Hello! Thank you for your compliment- i'm sorry that you are having a hard time following- We do have a a free sheet music download available for you in the comments, downloading that might help you follow along! We also have a more step by step walk through of this in our members area at pianote.com
Pianote I have the sheet music, that did not help at all.
Have you tried stopping the video. That's what I do. I watch what Lisa does, I stop the video and try myself.
You could put the video slower, in x0.5 for example
