    In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felony assault and false imprisonment.[22] One of the victims gave testimony of how Karenga and other men tortured her and another woman. The woman described having been stripped naked and beaten with an electrical cord. Karenga's estranged wife, Brenda Lorraine Karenga, testified that she sat on the other woman's stomach while another man forced water into her mouth through a hose.

      But the celebration itself is good isn’t it? Black people didn’t decide to accept Christianity on a nice beautiful sunny day. They accepted it at the end of a whip. Then there was the Christian crusade. It was nothing nice. People were tortured into accepting that religion. Christianity was and is built on war, incest, mayhem, rape, conquering of nations and so much more ugliness on a much larger scale than Karenga. We are not celebrating him. We are celebrating ourselves and others like us. What are your thoughts?

    I'm African, from Angola 🇦🇴
    The name Kwanza comes from Angola, from the Kimbundo language.
    Kwanza means "first" our "beginning".
    It is the name of the largest river in Angola, and also the name of our currency.
    It's also the name of two provinces of Angola, North Kwanza and South Kwanza.

    Was just reading about Dr Karenga and what a fine upstanding citizen he is/was. In 1971, he was convicted of felony assault, torture, and false imprisonment of women. He denied involvement and claimed the prosecution was political in nature. Karenga was imprisoned in California Men's Colony until he received parole in 1975. Now he's full time race hustler. Best regards from the UK.

      Not a fan of Karenga's actions, but he is just a man. All men are fallible. But the concept of Kwanzaa is a positive addition to Black culture. We don't have to throw the baby out with the dirty bath water! We are a thinking people. Take the good, and throw out the bad. But let's not cut off our noses to spite our faces. Research the origin of ALL the holidays and you will find some unsavory facts. Aint nobody mad about a fable of a white man bringing everyone free gifts?? Cursing the origins of Easter (a celebration of sex!)? Lets think like the brilliant people we are.

    • @TiffanySoulbird
      @TiffanySoulbird 11 дней назад

      Alright, let's talk about crimes against women! Misogyny is harmful and he was imprisoned which was fair....what is not fair is that there are so many people of African descent who have European ancestry because of what white men got away with doing to our ancestral mothers. 🤷🏾 A good number of these men are celebrated today. What is not fair is that black men are disproportionately punished for crimes, often unfairly. How about we tell the whole story that your education has deprived you of?

    • @TiffanySoulbird
      @TiffanySoulbird 11 дней назад

      The absolute nerve of people like you. He was punished for what many celebrated men of history got away with, because their victims were black women. If you want to talk about crimes against women you might ask why so many ppl of African descent have European ancestry. Hint: it was not because of consensual interracial relationships. Education really does make a difference. Go peddle your ignorance elsewhere.

    Thank you for your explanation of Kwanza. My husband is African American and when we first got married, I asked him about this when we had attended a Kwanza party. He said he didn't celebrate this so I let it go. I'll talk to him more about this later. Maybe we'll jump into celebrating this next year.❤

    We don't have education about the meaning of Christmas either but do we need it?. We already know what to do - make the decorations, make and ice the cake, put silver coins in the pudding, try not to break your teeth or swallow them, put up the Christmas tree with a star on the top, go carol singing, wrap presents, put a pie and milk out for Santa, be good and play games.

      I think it also uses a language that is not an ancestral language of black Americans. He also uses a first fruit feast from South African which we don't come from. The colors are also no aligned with actual African cutlures.

      @jasminepearls1047 Swahili and the colors Red, Black & Green were chosen because they represent Pan-Africanism.

    • @seun0203
      @seun0203 2 года назад +1

      @@jasminepearls1047 That's true, a West or Central African language would have been better. I think Swahili was chosen as it's spoken in multiple African countries but that there's no connection to African Americans.

      In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felony assault and false imprisonment. One of the victims gave testimony of how Karenga and other men tortured her and another woman. The woman described having been stripped naked and beaten with an electrical cord. Karenga's estranged wife, Brenda Lorraine Karenga, testified that she sat on the other woman's stomach while another man forced water into her mouth through a hose. What a great guy to emulate

    Celebrating Kwanzaa with my family this year for the 3rd time since 2020 however we celebrated a lot more consistently when I was a child in the 90s.

    While the concept and principles are awesome, I think the main reason it has not gained momentum is because of the dark past associated with the founder. While his horrible lifestyle doesn’t negate the fact that the holiday is an awesome idea and is needed, I can see how a lot of people are turned away from it because of him.
