We always pay attention to what’s popular because it’s...you know...popular. But the vast majority of stuff that’s out there is not popular. It’s underground. It’s obscure. Over 5 billion videos are watched on RUclips every day, but the vast majority of those are watched by hardly anyone. Obscurity. And the vast majority of videos, this one included, will never be seen by almost everyone. By the way,you should feel very special knowing that now.
But every once in awhile, something released to the public stays in obscurity for a long time, but then later becomes popular. Today, Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most beloved writers of all time, credited with basically inventing detective fiction and popularizing the short story. Yet, when he was alive, he was not famous at all, at least not for his own writings. He was known as a literary critic, but struggled to get his own work published. Although he was the first known American to actually make a “living” through writing alone, he lived most of his life in poverty. He went door to door trying to sell his poems in order to feed his family. But when Poe was alive, few people gave a crap about his original works, despite the fact that Poe tried desperately to make his stuff accessible to the masses. That’s right, he tried to sell out, but still no one cared. Flash forward to 2009, when one of the copies of his first books, Tamerlane and Other Poems, sold for a record price of $662,500. I guess we are ready for that. But people weren’t ready for that back then.
Somewhat similar to the story of Poe is the story of Johann Sebastian Bach. Today, he is one of the most famous composers of all time. When he was alive, however, he was known as a very talented...organist, who was known regionally but not throughout the world, or even Europe. But his real passion was composing original music, which nobody seemed to care about. Less than 10% of his compositions were published when he was alive. Yet, 79 years after Bach died, another German composer named Felix Mendelssohn helped popularize some of Bach’s old compositions. After that, there was no turning back. Today, when music dorks think of the Baroque period, Bach is usually the first composer who comes to mind.
And it’s not just Poe and Bach. Other people who were not that famous and appreciated when they were alive but became household names long after they died include Emily Dickinson, Galileo, and Vincent van Gogh, who struggled to sell his paintings when he was alive. In 1990, this painting, called Portrait of Dr. Gachet, sold for $82.5 million, or around $155 million adjusted for inflation.
Now these paintings would not be sold for millions of dollars. At least not today. These are some paintings by former American President George W. Bush. Imagine Bush being famous in 500 years for his...paintings, not for being a President.
So why does this happen? Why are some people not appreciated in their lifetime yet are greatly appreciated long after their death? One simple explanation is that people’s tastes change. When Bob Marley and the Wailers released their song “Turn Your Lights Down Low” in 1977, few people cared. In 1999, with the help of Lauryn Hill, it became a hit and was nominated for a Grammy. Other factors include how things are promoted. For example, something will stay obscure if there is no money to promote it to the masses. The duo known as Capital Cities recorded their song “Safe and Sound” in 2010 and released it in early 2011. But it wasn’t until 2013 that the song became a worldwide hit, after lots of money and marketing went into promoting it.
So often, we are not ready for that unless we’ve been told we’re ready for that.
Sure, this RUclips channel, currently sitting at about 1400 subscribers, is lost in the obscurity of the internet. But imagine how ridiculous it would be if one day, long after I die, it randomly gets tens of millions of subscribers. Because maybe, maybe you’re just not ready for this.

I could actually imagine Bush being more famous for his paintings than his presidency in the 22nd/23rd century. History works in weird ways sometimes.

I love how mister Beat steps away from his awesome president, movie or music items and just throws you a piece that encourages you to approach thinking about life in a more intelligent way.
Its people like him that leave life long passions in students, and i truely think that his actual students are lucky to have him.

I think an example of this would be a band called the Monks, they were a group of American G.I.'s stationed in Germany during the 1960s who all wore black robes and shaved their heads like monks. They formed a beat/garage rock band but when you listen to them it sounds almost identitcal to Post-Punk bands like Pere Ubu and Devo of the late 70s early 80s. They are also sometimes accredited with using guitar feedback for the first time aswell. Yet their album, Black Monk Time, was written and recorded in 1964/5 and released in 1966, before the Psychedelic explosion, before even Pet Sounds. They were barely big in Germany at the time and their label refused to release the album in the USA because of its strong anti-Vietnam message. In hindsight they can be accredited with influencing many Krautrock and Post-Punk bands with Can and The Fall naming them as an influence, even influencing techno music with their drum style. Although they're not appreciated in the mainstream today they still have more recognition and emulation than they ever did in their time.

Subscribed, that's 1 most closer to tens of millions.
I'm way lost in the obscurity of the internet.
In the early 2000's I was a semi famous graffiti artist (under an alias), pieces being exhibited around the world, appearing in books and documentaries, to the point that one of my street works was mis-recognised as Banksy and almost 20 years later reproductions of it are still sold online, look up "Blank Walls are Criminal." The police officer is me. Through the 2010's I moved into DJ'ing open format sets, playing every genre possible and juxtaposing the music with projected visuals from every film ever made as well as including thousands of popular culture references. Think: "Singin' In The Rain" with A Clockwork Orange, when one of the droogs gets knocked into the water, "Underwater Love" by Smoke City with underwater scenes from films, then "I'm On A Boat" with Titanic. The 'Ezekiel 25:17' monolog into the gun shots of M.I.A. "Paper Planes." I was playing to 200 people once a week, handing out popcorn, giving away red cyan glasses to play Bowie's "Space Oddity" with a 3D edit of the opening scene from Gravity for example. Performing for between 4-10hrs, sets would reflect current events, the political landscape, musicians and actors who'd passed away days before, programs trending on Netflix, videogames and internet culture, with 1950's pop to new releases. The crowd would dance, laugh, sing and applaud and I kept trying to find ways to expand my audience.
Recording it and publishing it online is almost impossible so my RUclips channel doesn't reflect any of it, not only due to technical limitations, but copyright flagging as well (though Vimeo is a way around this). Not to mention, I just don't have an online audience that will ever see my work or be willing to dedicate 60 minutes to watch something that took me months to make. As I'm not playing live now, I've got the time to work on recording.. thinking that someday people will find the videos I publish after I'm dead gives hope, because they're not seeing them now.

It's also true in a way with movies that flop at the box office but gain a cult following later on. The same thing is true with songs and memes. I don't think anyone gave too much thought to Rick Astley's minor hit "Never Going to Give You Up" until 20 years later when RickRolling became a thing.

    • @mattbeatgoeson
      @mattbeatgoeson  6 лет назад +4

Definitely. That's why I brought up It's A Wonderful Life. Imagine a movie being so bad it's released into the public domain EARLY. That's what happened with it. And yeah, Rick Astley is living pretty nice today thanks to RickRolling.

"I don't think anyone gave too much thought to Rick Astley's minor hit "Never Going to Give You Up" until 20 years later when RickRolling became a thing"
You clearly are a zoomer because you have absolutely no idea what you are talking. "Never Going to Give You Up" was anything but a minor hit. When it was released it was massive smash hit reaching number 1 in practically every country when the song was released back in 1987. It even won Best British Single that same year. You claiming no one cared about it until children on the internet made up "RickRolling" is nothing but fantasy. It is amazing how blatant misinformation can spread out of pure ignorance like what you did with that comment by not taking two seconds to research it before posting nonsense.

Dude, I had no idea this channel existed. Where does your prolifitude end? Anyway, I happen to believe 30 Rock is about the best TV show ever made. It didn’t do so great when it ran, but man I love it. I wouldn’t shy away from saying it had moments of genius... but it seems like most people I know just thought it was kind of dumb. Arrested Development falls under that banner too. Netflix tried to give it a revival, but apparently the world STILL wasn’t ready for it.

    • @mattbeatgoeson

Ha! Thanks man! I've never really watched 30 Rock before, but it seems I must check it out now. Arrested Development was genius its first couple of seasons but lost its magic...for now...until it returns in the 23rd century!

While Beethoven was certainly appreciated in his own time, his late string quartets were not. The Groẞe Fuge in particular was not understood in it's day, it was originally the final movement to his 13th string quartet but his publisher asked him to change it. It took about a century for it to be appreciated, with Igor Stravinsky describing it as a piece that is, "contemporary forever." His late quartets are now considered to be some of his greatest works.

I would request some videos about heavier bands, like Metallica, Slayer, Judas priest, Iron maiden and...
Btw do consider them mainstream or underground?
And fot mr.beat channel have you considered talking about religons? Like make a video explaining about a speciffic religon, or is ot too risky?

    Unknown/bypassed in their lifetime:
    "It's A Wonderful Life" (1946)
    Edgar Allan Poe
    Johann Sebastian Bach
    Emily Dickinson
    Galileo Galilei
    Vincent Van Gogh
    Eva Cassidy
*I discovered Eva Cassidy during a Google! search for performances of "Over The Rainbow" in early 2000. That led to the first edition of "Live at Blues Alley," and on to other Blix Street releases over the years.

I would say the great power trio from Detroit in the early 70's known as Death. These 3 brothas created a sound we've now come to recognize as Punk Rock years ahead of bands like The Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, etc. And since they couldn't even get arrested in their time (especially due to the shock of their name and being a Black band playing Rock and Roll instead of R&B or Jazz) they faded into obscurity and became a buried treasure for a long time. Thankfully they've since gotten recognition as musical pioneers, are back on tour and even have a great documentary about them called "A Band Called Death". And their music kick ass! 🤘🏾
