When I was growing up in the 1960's thru 1970's, Virna Lisi was probably the most beautiful actress I ever laid eyes on and watched in movies. So sad she passed already in 2014.

IMO Virna Lisi was one of the three most attractive actresses in motion picture history. (The other two being Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly.) She was stunning, natural beauty into her 70s.

Larry Blyden wound up becoming the third and final host of "WML" before his untimely death in a mid-70s car crash. Rest in peace, Larry.
In a way, Larry Blyden has been a part of me since I was a child when I first saw him in a Twilight Zone episode called "A Nice Place To Visit." The cast and crew had the next four weeks off, and were back to live broadcasts on November 27, over a year after Dorothy had passed away, with the Frank Sinatra (one of Dorothy's biggest enemies) and Mia Farrow episode.
7:35 -- This is one of two mentions made on Sunday Night WML of Dorothy Kilgallen after her death. It was as if, most of the time, Dorothy had not ever happened on WML. About that Race Round The World: Dorothy had to use scheduled airliners and airships for that race, which was not terribly easy in 1936, even if you had a travel agent. Still, she got to use the Hindenburg for that adventure -- and there were the most luxurious flight cabins available in 1936.
@soulierinvestments - As I recall this was covered in a bit of detail in Lee Israel's biography of Dorothy and she did some extraordinarily clever things to win that race, even considering the difficulties of this sort of contest back at that time. I should reread it to recall what her shrewd behaviors were, but she was active in her own win even then: always using her brain problem-solving.

Being an English woman it's likely that the contestant knew nothing about Kilgallen which accounts for her rather disinterested response. Indeed she's barely known, if at all, over here in the UK even today. She should've made history of course.

A very talented and interesting italian actress
Bennet Cerf speaks warmly about Dorothy Kilgallen, the panel member who died (some people say was killed) the year before. Elsewhere I read that she wasn't trusted by her colleagues on the show because any personal information they gave in backstage talk might appear in her column - she was always looking for a story. After people die, I think we tend to remember the best and forgive the worst traits in their character - I hope so!

Well, trustworthy or not, you have to admit that watching the panelists on here reminds us of how far IQs have dropped since I was a kid. There is actual genius on these panels.

I noticed the first guest, air plane pilot, wore her hair in the same style as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger.

I have a nerve condition that sometimes causes muscle spasms in my right leg. When Miss Lisi appeared on-screen, my leg started hopping up and down for a good 15 seconds.

I have a spinal disorder, and have all sorts of problems, pain, twitches and numbness in my legs, but I hear ya, every once in a while, that leg'll start twitching away when something catches its attention. Cheers!

Virna Lisi died last December 18th at the age of 78.
I've read some comment's concerning the death Larry B. The original story that I read years ago was that after his car rolled and he was injured bandits arrived rob him and left him for dead, the doctors thought that if he had gotten to them they had a good chance of saving him.

When I was a kid, there were a lot of gorgeous actresses. I think of Hedy Lamar, Gene Tierney, Ann Blyth, Jeanne Craine, Anne Baxter, Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch, Solidad Miranda (I am partial to brunettes obviously), etc. However, Virna Lisi may be the most gorgeous creature that ever lived (with the exception of my wife of course)!

Gil Fates wrote in his WML book that when Larry Blyden hosted syndicated WML, his catch phrase when meeting a woman along the lines of Virna Lisa was "I would love to jump her bones." So, Bennett's last question probably should have gone to Larry.

I personally would not recommend this style for Arlene. She is relatively small-busted and an Empire waist pretty much obliterates her curves and bust line, especially when adding that large bow to the waist.
I'm not much for ribbons. I would have liked the dress without it. She still looked good in it.

Larry Blyden was the second host of the syndicated What's My Line from 1972 until his death in a car accident abroad in 1975....the nationally syndicated version originated from NBC Rockefeller Center and Blyden's version gave New York celebrities national exposure...TV weatherman Frank Field,film critics Pat Collins,Leonard Harris and Rex Reed and anchorwoman Melba Rollover made regular appearances

Virna Lisi had a mole on the bottom-right corner of her lips, just like Anne Francis (of "Honey West" fame) did. Virna had it removed at around 1983 or 1984.

"Bennett mentioned that "our very much missed Dorothy Kilgallen was the first girl who ever went around the world by herself using aircraft, many years ago." Bennett did not clarify that Dorothy was not the pilot, which prompted Sheila Scott to add that in 1964, Jerrie Mock became the first woman to fly solo around the world as a pilot. Bennett and John then clarified that Dorothy was not the pilot, but a reporter. In September 1936, Dorothy participated in an around-the-world airplane race against fellow newsmen "Bud" Ekins (Herbert Roslyn Ekins, born 1901, aka H.R. Elkins) of the NY World-Telegram and Leo Kieran of the New York Times. Dorothy was the only female contestant in this aviation race around the world on commercial flights. The race also inspired Dorothy's autobiography, "Girl Around The World," which would later be turned into a 1937 mystery movie titled "Fly Away Baby" featuring the character "Torchy Blane." The film's loosely-based screenplay was written by Don Ryan and Kenneth Gamet, and the UK title of this movie was "Crime in the Clouds." The actual trip took Kilgallen 24 days and she came in second to Bud Ekins of the New York World-Telegram, who completed the trip in 21 days."
It was nice that Bennett brought up Dorothy that way. I think the unique factor in the "race around the world" in which Dorothy participated was that all the participants had to use regularly scheduled transportation. They couldn't just charter a plane strictly for their own use.

In the 1880s, long before planes, Jules Verne could write about a trip around the world in 80 days. 50 years later, with the advent of airplanes and cross-oceanic plane travel, using regularly scheduled flights (and otherwise), it still took three weeks. The world was much bigger then. The upside to this was the benefit to the mainland US during World War II of not being easily reachable by plane from Europe or Asia.
The last contestant looks like a young Goldie Hawn.

She was also the iconic cover girl on the March 1965 issue of Esquire. Google it. :)

When the worm farmer said that the worms are bisexual, I'm pretty sure he meant that they come in two sexes (male and female). I don't think he meant the same thing that we mean today when we use that term.

That is apparently what the farmer meant by "bisexual." However, this still isn't what most people mean today when they refer to a person as "bisexual."

At 19:14, Bennett Cerf asked the mystery guest, "Did you make your debut in a picture directed by George Axelrod", and he got a "yes" and guessed the identity of Virna Lisi. That is not the kind of question that you would hear from a typical man-about-town who watches a lot of movies. It is a question that reflected the fact that Cerf read "Variety" and "Motion Picture Daily" and the entertainment section of the newspaper.
Along with reading Variety the show’s mystery guest quite often was a star of the latest movie or above the fold in celebrity news.

"They're bisexual, they take care of things well enough.". Daly:"That's enough of that.". How the world has changed.

Because Bennett could never conceive that he was wrong, only that he was right and was cheated. He never considers he could be wrong, and always wants to argue, even he is completely wrong. An enormous ego.
He got the right phylum, but the wrong spelling. There are two "n"'s in annelid.
Little Blue John seems to have a particular interest in that domain. It's not the first time on WML thst he's demonstrated it.

A running joke for about fifteen years is that Daly is meant to have been regularly misunderstood by the panel. Ironically I don't think Daly has said anything misunderstandable since the series started!!

Larry Blyden would go on to become the third host of What's My Line in 1972. Here he is as a panelist while playing the Devil in "The Apple Tree" on Broadway in 1966 (Mr. Blyden died under mysterious circumstances in 1975 in Morocco.).
My understanding was that Blyden simply died in a car accident. What's the mystery about the circumstances?
As I recall, Larry Blyden was driving a rental car while on vacation in Morocco, which rental car ran off the road and overturned. He died as a result of his injuries. If you want to believe that the circumstances of his death were somehow "mysterious", I don't suppose I could dissuade you, but, honestly, does every celebrity death have to be mysterious or a conspiracy?
There was no money, no passport, and no driver's licence found when his body was found. What would he be doing driving alone in another country without any of those things, especially since he was there, as he claimed, to do some antiques shopping (Blyden was an avid antiques collector) This has lead to the belief that he was carjacked and killed by robbers.

Well, some people may believe that, I suppose. Apparently, Barbara Rush said so in her commentary track on the DVD of "What Makes Sammy Run?" But the generally accepted explanation is that he was driving his rental car to Tan-Tan to shop for native jewelry and had the accident. He died in the hospital about a week after the car crash and I do remember that the news reports at the time said it was an accident. Then again, I'm not someone who readily buys into conspiracy theories or mysterious alternative explanations for such things. I think he may simply have forgotten to bring his wallet and passport with him when he drove the car that day. I remember being in Sweden and driving from Stockholm in my rental car, almost all the way to the Norwegian border, when it dawned on me that, while I had my wallet, I'd left my passport in my hotel room. I haven't read anything about Blyden's not having had any money on him, but I am certain he didn't have his ID because the hospital didn't know who he was for that reason.
The shape of things to come on syndicated WML 1972-75: Arlene and Larry Blyden together. He plays very well; it is no mystery why he captured G-T's attention.
Blyden's new play was based in part on "the Diary of Adam and Eve" by Mark Twain and by something that Jules Fieffer wrote.
The other two parts of THE APPLE TREE were based on Frank R. Stockton's "The Lady or The Tiger?" and on Jules Pfeiffer's "Passionella."

Arlene seems to have picked up the slack that may have existed after Dorothy's death. She seems to not only get the line by crafty questioning, but she seems to bump into quite a few of them as well.
I was wondering where Dorothy went. I thought she didn't die yet until around 1966 sometime but I don't know when..I have to look into that.

Shiela appeared a number of times as a WML mystery guest with her singer-actor husband and nightclub act partner Gordon MacRae. She was very blond on WML, but on "The Honeymooners" Gleason insisted that she go red of hair. Hard to document that on RUclips: the Gleason Trust keeps his copywrite on a tight leash.
They're notoriously aggressive about copyright enforcement on YT, yes. But the real reason they should keep a lid on the Color Honeymooners episodes is so we can pretend they never happened. . .
What's My Line? soulierinvestments I have heard of, but never watched any show with Sheila and Gordon MacRae. After watching Sheila as a panelist here, she didn't seem very likable to me. But, of course, one can't judge a person only by one performance.
SuperWinterborn I haven't encountered many Honeymooners fans who dislike Shelia's version of Alice nearly as much as I do, but for me, she's enough to sink the whole program. Sadly, she was far from being the only thing deeply wrong with those shows-- but she was sufficient!

I've said this before on other episodes of WML and I'll say it on this one...I find the show so unentertaining when they guess the occupations so quickly, like with the first contestant. Been watching the show chronologically and feel in its last year it lost most of its luster.
I think I figured out why left handed people have such a difficult time writing. When a righty writes, he or she has a natural rest bar in the bone of the wrist. This seems not to be as useful for lefties.

Yes, it's that, but in combination with the fact we write from right to left rather than left to right. If it were the other way around, lefties would be able to write more comfortably than righties. Presumably the reason we do write from left to right is that 90% of people are right handed.

The worm guy's voice reminds me of Tom Bodett.
This is totally superficial, but I don't know of anyone else having commented upon it. There are about a half dozen to a dozen times over the years when the diamond heart necklace Arlene wears looks considerably larger to me than it does most of the time. I do not think it is the positioning of it on her neck. It must be an optical illusion of some sort, but I always notice it immediately: ah ha, this is one of those nights when it looks way bigger than usual. I had wondered if Martin had bought her a double heart with one outside the other, so there would be two hearts and she wore the larger one less often. But, never did I see her wear the double heart, had that been the case, nor have I ever read of it when the piece is mentioned. Just odd because to me it is noticeable immediately.
I first noticed the size difference when I saw it on MATCH GAME 1978 it's as if she had second one made which would make perfect sense since everyone would want to see her wearing it as years went on and the more sentimental piece could be kept for special occasions in a safe somewhere???

@@user-ne8lh2vr2t She had it yanked off her neck getting out of a taxicab in NYC on her way into her home in Manhattan in 1988, 4 years after Martin's death and it really upset her. So if there were 2, the real one was stolen. I am just glad that someone else had noticed this, who watches these here.

I find it interesting in some way that the nearer we get in time for every episode the lesser known are the Guest panelists and Mystery guests to me. Larry Blyden, Sheila MacRae, Virna Lisi, Orson Bean, Sue Oakland (never heard of them before)... maybe because they were stars in TV and not in films.

I recognize the likes of Warren Beatty, Woody Allen, Dick Cavett, Michael Caine, Mia Farrow, Jane Fonda, Steve McQueen, The Smothers Brothers, Ursula Andress, Raquel Welch, and Barbara Feldon, far more than I would with the likes of Arthur Godfrey, Victor Borge, Charles Coburn, William Bendix, and Artie Shaw.
I guess it could be just because I'm more familiar with Modern Hollywood.

Joe Postove I choose to believe that the Color Honeymooners episodes do not exist. I can't stand MacRae's interpretation of Alice. Completely, totally wrong, and it wasn't accidental: she was on record as saying that she couldn't bear to play Alice the way Audrey Meadows did, "tearing down her man that way". Which was the entire point of the character. She was an actress playing a part, and the part called for her to be steely, strong and nasty in the face of Ralph's aggression. It shouldn't have mattered whether she agreed personally with the way the *character* dealt with her fictional husband.
And I find her attempt at a Brooklyn accent excruciating.

I don't think I've ever seen any of the episodes with Sheila MacRae. I would be interested in seeing them, though, especially after reading your comments. I completely understand the point you are making, but I'm wondering if I might personally like the Alice character better if she were gentled a bit.

Technically worms are hermaphroditic, meaning that they have both male and female sexual organs. I'm not quite sure that translates to bisexual but even calling them hermaphrodtes would have elicited a strong response and would have taken the contestant longer to explain, which would have given John more time to shut him down.

And Sheila MacRae would become a mainstay on the new WML,, as well as Blyden, who replaced Wally Bruner in 1972.

I thought she looked a bit like Goldie Hawn in certain shots. It's largely due to the hairstyle, I guess, since on close-up I didn't think she looked like her at all, but from a little distance away, she seemed to resemble Goldie Hawn in other ways as well.

It was very refreshing to hear someone from Missouri pronounce the name of the state "Miz/ur/e" and not "Miz/ur/a." It never made any sense to me for someone to pronounce the "i" like an "a."
