    The previous owners of our place left a cat behind. "He's feral" they said, "just leave some food out", they said. It took us weeks, but he became an indoor cat who worships the ground my wife walks on. He's her boy, sleeps with her, watches TV with her. I'm just the litter box cleaner and feed flunky. :D

      I had a cat that kind of did that. It was kind of a grrrrr sound. I don't think she really ever meowed. Just made the grrrrr sound. It was basically her way of saying hello. I loved that cat. She was tuxedo cat. A lot of times when I would get home from work she would be on the front steps. I would drive down the driveway to the garage and look in my rear view window and she would be trotting down the driveway following me to welcome me home. I will never forget her. She died at about 17 years old.

    My cat, I think, was abandoned by her previous owners. I knew he wasn’t feral as he walked right up to my door and was meowing. I was never a cat person, I actually had two pugs at the time but she was so hungry and she was very tiny I could tell. I went right out to the store and bought a bunch of food and treats. I started by feeding her on the porch since I wasn’t sure how my dogs would react. As the days and nights grew colder I couldn’t bear to see this poor cat out in the cold so I brought her inside.
    That was 5 years ago and she’s my best friend now.

      51Saffron,
      Thank you for taking care and loving senior animals. Most people want young cat’s or dog’s, they don’t want to begin loving the senior animal and then they pass away. They want to avoid the pain of loss when a senior animal dies. My husband and I have always adopted homeless kitties. Samson my youngest cat, was adopted from the SPCA, he was just 12 weeks old. Chloe is my older cat. If my husband and I didn’t take her into our family, the shelter her owner was going to put her in, would’ve kept her just 5 day’s, if she wasn’t adopted during that time, they would’ve put her down. When I heard what would happen to her, I told my sister-in-law to bring her to her new home. I wasn’t going to let her be put down. My sister-in-law said “Chloe was around 13 years old.” First thing I did was take Chloe to the vets and get her checked out. The previous owner didn’t take care of her. No vet checks or shots. We got her fixed, so we wouldn’t have kittens running around the apartment. She got all of her shots and her nails clipped. It took some time, but she learned how to live in doors! She’s a very loving cat and I can’t imagine life without her! Both of my kitties are adorable and I wouldn’t give them up for the world. My kitties are my babies/children. Oh it turned out that Chloe wasn’t 13, she was 9 years old when she came to her forever home, that was 5, almost 6 years ago. Chloe and Samson took about 6-9 months before I’d leave them in the same room while I wasn’t home. They get along great now!

    Everytime I went to my fathers neighborhood I would see the same stray cat. My father said his neighbors complained that the owners left the young cat behind months ago when they moved. The kitty was desperate for attention and a new home. Temperatures are freezing and below right now. I decided if I saw the kitty the next time I visited my father that I was going to keep him. As soon as I left my fathers house at my next visit I saw the kitty sitting next to my truck. It was fate lol I looked at him and asked if he wanted to go home with me, are we going to do this?. I opened my door and he jumped right in. I didnt have a carrier or box with me and I was nervous about starting the vehicle and how he would react. I started my truck and the kitty looked around hopped onto the backseat, propped his paws under himself and hunkered down for the trip home. I was amazed! Not even a meow. I made a few laps around my Dads neighborhood before heading out onto the road just to be sure he wouldnt get too scared. He sat the entire ride home and is now a cherished part of our family. We had recently lost our beloved kitty of 15yrs and finding this furry ball of love was just what our family needed. We named him Myles. He takes turns sleeping under our chin at night. We decided as a family that from now on this is how we will find our new furry family members. There are so many of them living outdoors who need a warm loving home. I feel really lucky to have come across Myles. Hes a very special kitty with an extraordinary personality ❤

      I had a similar situation with my youngest cat. He hung around my girlfriends old apartment, a neighbor took him in for a few days but then tossed him back out during subzero freezing days...even after we said we would take him, they said they would give him a home but then kicked him out again. My girlfriend brought him in out of concern that he would freeze, I took him to the vet a day later and he came home with me after that. He is the sweetest most loving cat, I don't know how any one could be so cruel to toss any animals out side in such horrific weather conditions.

      @@lolab1447 I dont know how ppl can do that either. My neighborhood had a HOA meeting and during that meeting residents were complaining about the feral cats. Some wanted everyone to agree to stop feeding/watering/housing them. The area where a few of us feed them isn't inside the community property so it isnt a HOA decision to be voted on. I absolutely will not stop feeding, watering and putting cat houses up for them. Today was 19 degrees with the windchill. To cut those cats/kittens off from food and shelter would be cruel. I made the comment that if there was a litter of puppies in that same area everyone in my neighborhood would be feeding them or bringing them home. Most ppl in my neighborhood are dog lovers.

One day he had the garage door open and was tidying out his car. In walked the cat, parked herself in the driver’s seat and that was it. He had a cat. I had a similar experience with a huge yellow tom who was part of 3 feral cats one black female and a tabby kitten. After many weeks of feeding them, I finally got him to come to me with food. The other two followed him but never opened up to me as he did. Tigger came in the house after a trip to the vet, and the other two came in also. He was with me all the time, but the other two kept to themselves. They wanted to be near him, not me, and I couldn't change their minds. I swear he communicated with those two cats with sounds I'd not heard before from a cat. I know how crazy it sounds, but it happened. He had the big tom cat cheeks, too, and knew that I loved him. I'll never forget him and his two buddies who may have been his mate and kitten I suppose. I love a happy ending. That was many years ago, and nothing like that has happened since. I'll never forget him.

    I found my MeMow cowering next to a trash can at the front parking lot of the city park. When I first drove by I thought, Man that is so strange for a feral cat to be sitting exposed like that. So I circled back and drove past again, and he was still there. So I decided to slowly pull into the parking lot and stop to see how he would react. Instead of getting scared he just stayed and watched, and to my surprise he got even more curious when I stepped out of the door.
    I took my time and slowly walked over to where he was, there was a bench a few feet from the trash can he was hiding next to and I just sat there and acted like I didn't even notice him. Not even a minute later this cat was ALL over me. Rubbing on my legs, jumping on my lap and just being thee most affectionate thing you could imagine.
    I was like "yo this cat is way to social to be a stray" so I started playing with him a bit and I noticed he had been declawed and my heart sank. Someone had this cat for about two years, declawed him, and when they were done with him they must of just dumped him at the park because he was waiting there for his owners to come back for him. Left him there all alone and didn't even leave him with claws to hunt or fend for himself. ( I'm roughly guessing he was about two years old because he had reached his full adult size but had a little bit of kitten left in him)
    We waited there for about an hour to see if someone would come looking for him just in case he got out by mistake because I was hoping I was wrong. That cat never left my side that whole time and when it came time to leave he followed me and jumped into my car. I have no idea who would do something so cruel to such a loving animal but I'm glad he's mine.
    He has been thee perfect kitty since day one, he never bites too hard when we play, he never gets into anything he's not supposed to, and he has been the sweetest foster dad to our newest rescue MeMew. My only regret with this cat are the conditions I found him in. Not only should you NEVER de-claw your cat but to abandon him after taking his claws away? That's just the most heartless thing I could think of.

      Never even knew that was a thing, vets will do anything for money I guess. My cat came back one night with a broken leg and they were trying to pressure me into amputating his leg or putting him down because that was all they could do. It was broken completely all the way and was through his elbow joint so I admit it was a tricky break.
      Anyways I got him to another vet that technically wasn't officially a specialist but saw the x-ray and said he could do it. Charged me $2500 whereas if I'd gone to a specialist it woulda been closer to $5000. Cat kept his leg and seems fine, jumps up on table and cupboards fine he just doesn't like jumping down anymore he likes a chair pulled out.

      I found a beautiful red haired Australian Shepard border collie mix dog laying in the last cage at a local shelter. She had several missing teeth and several health conditions from injuries she got from her abusive home. She was 8 years old. That dog was the most gentle and angelic creature i had ever met. All she wanted to do was hide in a corner out of the way of everyone else but after months of gentle coxing she opened up and came to life. We had her for 5 years and it was worth every cent we put into that old dog 8 times over.

      What is fiv?

    • @justso4509
      @justso4509 5 лет назад +54

      @@draghag - FIV is short for feline immunodeficiency virus, it's kind of like the kitty cat equivalent of HIV in humans. You're supposed to keep FIV positive cats away from uninfected ones so as to not spread the disease. It's transmitted mostly via bite wounds.
      My mom once took in a starving stray who tested positive for FIV. That cat was absolutely skin and bones. The vet estimated she was probably 10 years old & we expected she wouldn't live a lot longer, especially since she had to stay outdoors because Mom already had indoor cats.
      We gave her a heated cat house and kept it in the garage. Imagine our surprise when she regained full health and then lived another 10 vivacious years until kidney disease took her out.
      She was so sweet & a great hunter, keeping the garden mostly free of pests and often leaving fresh-killed "gifts" at Mom's back door. I know that sounds gross, but from the cat's perspective she was trying to do a good thing!

    • @kimdawcatgirl
      @kimdawcatgirl 5 лет назад +24

      @@justso4509 You don't need to keep FIV cats away from other cats unless they are not fixed and prone to fighting as most cats, even large groups, rarely bite each other. I would know as I have a cat sanctuary and take care of a large number of barn cats at the neighbors dairy farm. FIV positive cats do very well in communities of cats, if fixed and are very low risk of infecting others. It takes a very deep bite wound to spread it and usually fighting toms are the high risk group.

      Thanks Kim, good to hear! Mom actually did let the kitty inside during the last years of her life since she'd clearly made friends with the other cats (through the screen door, haha). Thought she was "breaking a rule" so didn't want to say anything, but all the other cats were fine in the end. The FIV kitty did get fixed a few months after she showed up at Mom's house, once she was healthy enough for it.

I am also heartbroken. I have 3 other cats & I love them with all of my heart but Rafe was my soul mate & Mia was just the quirkiest, funniest most adorable cat I've ever had. It's like she never grew up. It was mutual adoration with Rafe & his favourite place with me was on my right shoulder & he would nuzzle his nose into my hair or my ear. He never went after birds or mice, he had no desire to kill anything, he was too old a soul for that. |
      I always suspected this was the case & when I started working with Higher Dimensional Guides & Angels they confirmed this for me. They told me that my Rafe had to leave me for a while to give me heart healing which was achieved through my tears of grief. I think I've cried every day for at least 2 months. They told me early on that he would be back again soon.
      I'd been told I would find Rafe in the area I am presently living in. I had no intention of moving back here, but, that's how things turned out. But, within a week of being back here, I found him practically on my doorstep! He turned up as a little lost kitten on the road literally right outside my house! And, I knew straight away he was mine.

      So if you give it time & somehow your beloved pet will find you again & again. So keep your eyes open, for that one cat or kitten that really needs a home & when you find it, it will feel like destiny has had a hand in this. May God bless & keep you safe with the promise that your beloved pet will be home with you again soon

      A neighbour in an adjoining colony would feed the cat, but would push him out, once fed.
      I did ask them to give him to me, they refused.
      Then one cold Sunday morning the cat was so roughly flung out, and l happened to be there coz the landlady was a friend l often spent time with. She witnessed this scene.
      I told her I wanted take him with me and she said it would gladden her heart, as the lovely fella was so mistreated. I picked him up and cuddled him in my coat.
      That day a former pupil dropped in and l said to him, "Guess what, I stole this cat to give him a better life"
      His reply : It's very important to be Honest, but it's way more important to be Right.

It’s just show to never “put down” (kill) a cat because those issues can be treated and you can see how much life and happiness the action of saving and giving love and care to the kitty brought to the world, and his mama and rescuer said his happiness and love and healing and to give him in his senior years the love and affection he so much needs , was worth everything in the world and every bit of effort and How believe that’s effort and life giving is what truly counts by God. So thank you dear lady who rescued and helped heal the kitty and the kitty’s parent , you are both angels and inspiration, and I wish kitty Mr.B many many many many many happy and healthy and loving years with her great parent and many many many happy and healthy years to the rescuer . The kitty we rescued, what an experience! We lived in an apartment and had a number of "stray/feral" kitties. We left dry food out for them. One morning when getting our paper off the porch there was a note from the paper delivery person. The note said that a big white rat was eating the food we had out. It wasn't a rat, but a very scared scruffy, kitty. It took 6 months of patience to get him to trust us. We would open the door and all we'd see was a blurr! First he just ran away, then he'd run to the edge of the porch, then to the bottom of the stairs, then the middle of the stairs, then to the edge of the first stair. He let us pet him, not to much and he was gone. The next day he actually sat and let us pet him for an hour before he left. The next day he came into the apartment, he wouldn't go further than the door, but he stayed in the door and watched our cats play. The next day when he came back he came into the apartment and was okay with the door being closed. He stayed a couple hours than wanted out. The next morning he was waiting at the door, came in, walked over to the couch, He got up on it, curled up into a ball and slept most of the day. He left that night and I expected him to be waiting at the door the next morning, when he wasn't there I was disappointed. When he didn't come all day I started to worry, I went and looked for him and nothing. Left his food out and nothing. The next morning I open the door and there was our beautiful, filthy, yellow kitty with the bright blue eyes. I was so excited, but didn't want to scare him. I'd rather him come visit each day and leave at night. That night he didn't want outside, he never left again. He was our Reggie! Under all that yellow dirt was a beautiful snow white, soft, fluffy boy. He was gentle, calm, sweet, caring, loving, the best nurse ever! He watched my partners every move. If he sat on the couch, Reggie sat on the couch, if he went to bed, Reggie went to bed. He comforted us when we were sad or sick. He was our quiet calm place! We were blessed and honored that he allowed us to be his humans. We had him for seven wonderful years, I didn't realize the impact he had on our lives until the day we lost him. We never said we wouldn't get another kitty, we gave ourselves time and when another kitty needed help, we jumped right in. It was the best experience of our lives. That was 20 yrs ago, still makes me smile every time I think of him. 🐾💙🐾

      FIV is transmitted through blood or through sex (as in mating, I am not sure it's the correct term, English is not my first language) so they cannot be around other cats only if the cat hasn't been spayed/neutered, or if they are feral and aggressive.
      *Once they get spayed/neutered and they are socialized, they can be around, eat, sleep and use the same litter box with other non-fiv-cats without risk*.
      They only have a weaker immune system than others, but I have seen many FIV positive cats live a happy and long life, even going outdoors.
      I am writing this because so many times people are afraid to adopt a FIV cat, or they get abandoned/eutanised because of fear mixed with ignorance...

    Adopt older animals!
    They're at such great risk, and they are in the saddest situation.
    Every cat and dog I have adopted have been seniors, with the exception of one, my dog Neptune who was 2 when we met.
    The softest, most tender, most loving part of my heart is reserved for senior animals in need. I have empathy for all living things, of course, but nothing could ever shatter my heart more than a senior dog dying in a dog pound because they were abandoned.

    Last January we stopped for a stray tom sitting in the middle of the road... he had been mauled by a dog or coyote and had no skin around about 80% of his neck (just a little patch of fur under his chin survived the attack). He was almost certainly on his last day and finally asked for help. Even though he was suffering and in pain he was a sweetheart right from the beginning. We took him to the vet, he was badly malnourished and dehydrated, weighing less than 7lbs. I was initially thinking it would be just to end his suffering but he ate at the vets and we decided to give him a couple days of care to see how it went. He spent 4 days in the hospital getting his neck treated, neutered, wormed (bad worms), and re-hydrated/fed... then we brought him home. The plan was to find a home for him once his neck healed but within a month it was clear he wasn't going anywhere (which is good, because his neck is finally almost healed... after 7 months). We weren't really thinking about getting another cat... but he's so affectionate and happy that he's impossible to resist. He's now a decidedly plump 16lbs... I was thinking we should put him on a diet but the vet said "after what he went through... he deserves to be a bit fat". So Sir Francis Neck Bacon (don't ask, my wife and I have a twisted sense of humor) will be with us for the long haul.

      FYI- you need to keep the cat at normal weight for his size. Starvation typically damages the liver and the extra weight could radically shorten his life. That is not what he deserves.

      Dear Stephanie,
      Obesity is not good for animals, you are absolutely right, it shortens the lifetime - as with humans.
      When buying food, everyone should pay attention to the ingredients (I do not know, however, whether the ingredients are listed on the packaging in America.) In some of the offered cat food here in Germany is sugar - you should not believe it. I basically buy a food without sugar and give my two dear old tomcats no leftovers from the table (begging was never an issue).

    • @kuhndj67
      @kuhndj67 5 лет назад +41

      He's not obese... he's just not thin. Our vet (who has seen him at least once a month as he has recovered) assured us he was very healthy and to not worry about his weight as long as he maintained it at this level.

      @@zoolkhan In my life God has had everything "to do with it"!! Mostly God uses people to bless others (and animals). Why does one have to cancel out the other? I donate what I can to my local shelter and to well researched shelters around the world. I volunteer at my local rescue shelter. I also love people and work with the homeless. In my case, I feel my faith has blessed me and encouraged me to be compassionate. I have received much more in return than anything I did. I am not here to argue with you so I mean no offense. We are fostering kittens right now, it depends how long you have them, a week is easy. But as they stay longer you do get more attached, it’s also harder to find an adopter. You find that the longer you have them the more ‘perfect’ you want their forever home to be.

    The most beautiful souls we've ever had here at Wildcat Hill have been old, run-down, near end-of-life toms. They seem to be the most serene, gracious, thankful and wonderful cats we've ever had to grace our lives. When they come to us, we go out of our way to make their last year or years as loving and pleasant as possible... and they give back 1,000%.
