  • Te Anau is a town on the South Island of New Zealand (172 KM from Queenstown). It’s known as a gateway to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound. Te Anau Caves feature a limestone grotto of Glowworms and an underground waterfall (Real Journeys run 1 hour tour to Glow-warm cave).
Milford Sound is an inlet (sound) in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island (285 KM from Queenstown and 118 KM from Te Anau). The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound is very beautiful. Eglington Valley, Mirror Lake, The Divide, Monkey Creek, Homer Tunnel are few of the attractions on the way to Milford Sound. Beautiful mountain ranges with glacier at the peak are both side of the road.
The beauty of Milford Sound doesn’t have any word. This is my little afford to showcase the trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound via Te Anau.
    Video resolution is 1080P.

I drove from Te Anau to Milford sound in the beginning of winter back in June 2019. Woke up at 7am to get to Milford Sound for a 10am kayak around the sound. Probably the most beautiful drive I'd ever seen in my life. Will 100% do it again.

Driving to milford sound in winter is more beautiful than driving during Spring or not?
      Just curious.
I plan to go to milford sound in winter.
Not sure if it's a good time to visit tho

@@norpriest521 in my mind, Spring is beautiful as well, just a different kind of beauty. That’s why NZ is so awesome!

So beautiful it still breaks my heart and I’ve been going there often for 70 years. First time was when the Homer tunnel had just started being formed and not one person or car did we see either way from Te Anau. The only place to buy a few groceries was from a caravan at Te Anau. There was a nice old hotel and we would go on a Saturday night and sit on benches to watch a movie. I recall Bells of St. Mary’s with Bing Crosby. It was just after Christmas so all the workmen had gone home. My most favourite place in the world.

Thanks so much for this video, we love visiting Queenstown (usually in September) and we always do the bus trip down to Milford Sound with the boat trip included. Watching this bought back so many memories, can't wait till September this year to visit again. Thanks Australia/NZ travel bubble.

I'm a local, disappointed you didn't record some of the drive between Homer Tunnel and the Sound and no footage of Mitre Peak, which is the largest geographical feature there..
However, what you did record was very good...
The eighth wonder of the world..

Hi local . What’s it like in September? Can you drive to Milford Sound at that time of year? Milford or Doubtful? It would be great to see some extra footage of the drive..others have footage that I’ve watched. looks amazing!

@@carolyneg3780 Hi Carolyn, road is open all year round..
(But not today..Lol. Closed by heavy snowfall..)
September is spring time so road should be open, the avalanche risk monitored at all times..It's a fabulous trip, I've done it many times..just take your time, stop often..
My late wife was English, she was speechless... we went there on honeymoon, helicopter flight over Mitre Peak an experience I will never forget...So just do it..!!
It's a trip you need to do twice, once on a fine day, then on a fine day after heavy rain..waterfalls spectacular..
Doubtful Sound is also worth a visit...accessible only by boat from Manapouri..overnight trip on the Sound by boat magical..

Best to stay in Te Anau..much closer to Milford Sound. Leave either early or later to avoid the tourist buses..Or be on one, this road claims a few distracted drivers, accidents happen regularly..

@@Skiwi51 In the end we stayed in Te Anau and took a minibus tour from there with a local company. It was lovely and quiet due to the lack of mass tourism and in these conditions you could easily drive down from Te Anau by car and take a boat without booking it in advance. One of the few good things about this Covid plague is that travelling around NZ has become comfortable and nature is recovering. Our guide showed us how the river had regenerated and rare birds not seen there for years had come back. When it is bumper to bumper travel coaches, probably best to book a tour in my opinion.
