  • Avidya is not simply a lack of knowledge; it is a lack of true knowledge of self and true nature of reality. Shankaracharya in his commentary has described avidya in the form of preface, which is known as 'Adhyasbhashya’.
Adhyas is another name for Avidya. Shankaracharya has given the definition of Adhyas as ‘Acknowledging the existence of a non-existent thing in something is 'Adhyasa'.
    Functions of Avidya
    (1) The power of veiling (Avarana-shakti)
    (2) The power of projection (Vikshepa-shakti)
