I love Sauron as a villain. But my favorite aspect of him you only see in the Silmarillon. In LOTR, people tend to dismiss him as just the stereotype of the dark lord but in the Silmarillon, he is crafty, he is cunning, he is manipulative…he is patient as all hell. “Oh, look an island of blessed humans I can’t match in military might. How about I spend literal generations corrupting them and making God himself take them out?”

My top 3 are 1. A certain dude from Bleach 2. A certain dude from Berserk 3. A certain dude from Monster All 3 have an aura around them which signifies them as the one in control even in the worst case scenarios and the sense of superiority that each of them possesses is so natural and you would think that would be there biggest fault but it isn't. Its their attitude and the way they are presented that makes them such good characters in general

Have you ever read Worm?? It's a web series. I think it has a good Villain/Protagonist dynamic and even premises. You'll literally question other story if their powers was from Alien Eldritch Simulations.
I recently watched Season 1 of Jessica Jones, and what surprised me is that Kilgrave genuinely seems to believe he's done nothing wrong. Most of the justifications he gives are obvious bullshit, like when he says he never killed anyone because he makes other people do it. I think his worldview is so warped that he actually believes every word of his own BS and that's fascinating to me.
When he complains about how hard it is for him to word any requests in such a way that his power doesn't come into play, and how he always thought Jessica was genuinely consenting to sex, it was such a disturbing character moment
@@taylor_green_9 at that moment I was practically yelling at the screen "you could've asked her, jackass! you literally asked someone to tell the truth earlier today!"
@@jalapenoofjustice4682 I think that's one of those things he absolutely didn't want to know the truth of. He *wanted* her to love him, and he didn't want to believe she didn't; so even if there was ample reasons to test for the truth he never would have. What he wants matters more to him than what she wants, which is part of why he is a vaillain-- but it's also part of why he's human, he's selfish, but until Jessica he rarely had to confront that reality. His ego is built on the idea that it's not his fault that people do what he wants, and that because he can't help who he is that means he should get to do things, even if that hurts people. Love to hate him. He's just... Entitled in a way that gives me shivers.
I'm on Rhythm of War from my Stormlight re-read. I won't say his original name because of spoilers but... Vyre. This man. Every single time he is on the page he makes my skin crawl and anger boil inside so hard that I almost want to skip to the next scene or POV. Great video, thank you! Definitely agree about THAT one from the First Law, the last pages did leave a very strong aftertaste. Also, wanna give a shoutout to King's "Revival" and the incredibly unsettling, creepy, malevolent but somewhat relatable Charles Jacobs. Personally, the entire book I desperately wanted him to be right, even though his flaws were evident from the start.
I think a kinda underappreciated type of villain is the one that's just really pathetic. Stoic and badass villains are also cool ig, but there's just something so interesting and human about a character who isn't above begging and crying and groveling (and then probably stabbing you in the back as soon as you start to pity them) to get what they want
doffy is one of my favorite villains.the scene where the henchmen laughs at pica's voice and his explanation of how his officer agents are his family and that they are closer to him than his blood relatives and that monet and vergo gave there lives for him and you see how much it hurt him too have them do it even though we know how cold and heartless he can truly be.
[REDACTED] from Monster is the only fictional villain, or fictional character really, who has scared me by quietly appearing in a scene and then doing nothing.
A character who I really appreciate for how it was well written is Light Yagami, from Death Note. You can understand how manipulative and subtle he can be, doing the wrong things for a "right cause". Light is very smart, and I liked how he was portrayed, how he articulates his movements, making his path clear of clues that he is Kira. First time I got into DN I enjoyed him a lot, second time I was more into L's side, although I still enjoy Light's character.
I tried Death Note but didn't get into it... It's just... I hate it when you portrait a Character to be extremely smart and than let him do something stupid so the plot get's along. In an early episode someone exclaimed on live television that they would find this Kira. And the first thing I thought was _It's a Trap!_ After all until then they had no real evidence that someone controlled their deaths, so for some Detective to go on live television and claim they are going to capture Kira sounded so sus... And instead of looking into it Light immediatly killed him... Why? Sure he had a God Complex, but at that time there was no threat to him nor any real reason to kill a police officer who did or at least looked like to do his job. There are a few stories that may very well be good, that I haven't finished because of things like that. If your Character isn't smart, than let them make big mistakes. But if you have a smart character and have later have him fight in a battle of wits with another character... Than don't let him make stupid things to get the story along.
@Anarchy Rising but that's what I said, just because you have a God Complex doesn't mean you suddenly become stupid. Sure probably thought no-one could outsmart him or something like that, but at that point no-one had evidence that there actually was someone doing that. So some Detective claiming he will investigate into someone who can kill you without being in the same room... No conplex in the world can explain that stupidity. It just feels like an attempt to give the police the knowledge where they should look into. Let's be honest if he didn't make that mistake, they porbably would have never been able to catch him, since they would have never known where Kira was. Light making mistakes is fine, especially when he starts thinking of himself as a god more and more, but just at the beginning, where he shortly before build a complicated security system for the Death Note...
@@jackwriter1908 I get your criticism. But you are wrong on a few fronts. Light had a a narcissistic attitude from the beginning actually. You can see hints of that in his first convo with Ryuk. Also, God complex CAN make you that stupid. In real life, it usually makes people even more stupid than light was tbh. Narcissism makes you incredibly delusional and unable to see reality in a practical way. Moreover, if you are a new murderer (like light was), then an action like L's would trigger a nervous reaction which would make you reckless and stupid, no matter how logical you are. You are seriously underestimating the amount of influence mental issues and phenomena can have on someone.
@@jackwriter1908 him killing the detective is not stupid at all. If by any chance he was L, Light could've gotten rid of him. Moreover if he wasn't Light could've made an impression as a god like being who can punish people without coming in contact with them. It's just that L was too smart for a highschool student which is completely fine.
@@trollerno.150 sorry, but your name was too distracting... If he would want to portait a God like Image then he would have tried to kill the Detective beforehand, the fact that he killed him only after watching the livestream showed that he was a human, after all why would a god wait until there was a live stream. He could have easily waited a couple of days and then let the "Detective" kill some criminals before commuting suicide, instead he does something rash.
I just love how you said Kyle's name the first time round, basically everyone I know who has read Liveships says it the exact same way and its great XD
One of the Villains from Tigana, by Guy Gavriel Kay gave me my first fantastic taste of what a fully fledged antagonist could add to an already Epic Story. In his followup book, A Song For Arbonne, Kay gave me 3 Antagonists of varying villainy, who added nuance to the emotional impact he’d successfully established in earlier work. David Gemmell’s Rigante Books had a satisfying mix of depth and oleaginous evil in the numerous antagonists presented.
Hao Asakura from Shaman King is one of my favourite villains from my childhood. I like how pleasant a person he is, how much of a presence he has on the story and how unbelievably strong he is. **SPOILER** I love how he ends up essentially winning in the end, with everyone else being VERY aware that they are on borrowed time at the end of the series.
I love Hao, and I love his arc, he’s my favorite character since childhood. I absolutely hate the humor in the series though, and the way it handled his ‘defeat’.
@@PlusquamPerfekt256 agreed, every page he’s on except the final chapter, he’s a MENACE, but the end cheapened it so much by that stupid mom calling him out thing. Ugh. I cringe so hard thinking about it and can’t get over it lol!

One of my favorite villains is Agatha Christie’s The Man in the Brown Suit. The most unsettling thing about him is that you can’t help but like him even after he is revealed, even after knowing all the horrid stuff he’s been a part of. Christie made you love him, then pulled away the lies at the last second to reveal what I never would have guessed. So yeah that book is fantastic.
Thank you for this video, you really make me feel what you seem to feel talking about these vilains because that's just what you do. I am continuing my journey of convincing you to begin to read Kingdom, the same way as my fellow One Piece fan did, by telling you that it is one of the greyest stories I've ever read. It has protagonists of course but, as Doflamingo said, the winner defines what justice is. And so, history decided we should stand for one particular side but really there isn't a "good" side. Thus reading Kingdom you find yourself cheering for monsters on your side and fearing ones that could be considered saints on the other side. This feels really confusing but great at the same time.
One of my favorite villains is actually Bleeder from Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson. He sets it up so well and really puts Wax through the ringer with what he does. One of Sanderson's best-written villains for sure
Hisoka and the phantom troupe are amazing. I won't talk about him to much incase you ever decide to read it but I love Pain from Naruto as well. He came in there and turned the whole story upside down.
I don’t read a lot of stories that necessarily have villains, but one of my faves is from the webcomic Tower of God. She’s not really anyone special, and I think I read that rather than the protagonist, she’s the one the reader is supposed to insert themselves into or relate to. But the author uses her presence in the story so well!
For villains in terms of manga, I recommend reading 20th Century Boys and Monster, Manga created by Naoki Urasawa. He is a genius. Also if you can, please read Homunculus manga, it took me an entire night to read it, it's a quick read
Bondrewd from Made in Abyss is the only villain that has made me throw up with disgust from what he did. Not only is he horrible enough to leave an impression on me forever, but he is also so dang charismatic I can't help but like him despite everything he did.
He was a truly appalling monster. But I feel the same way about Accelerator in Index. I know the majority of people think he's a cool anti-hero type, but killing 10,000 girls in a few weeks and laughingly brutalizing them while he was at it is an unforgivable act, no matter how he tries to redeem himself now.
1- I love your sweater and 2- yesss bring all the baddies. I love a WELL WRITTEN Villain, especially if I REALLY hate them, you know they're good LOL. You should check out A Lesson in Vengeance (YA Dark Academia Psychological Thriller) It's not a full on villain reveal (well it's hard to say without spoilers lol) but it messes with you where there's information about the story that you get breadcrumbs and dont know till almost the end, and the ending OMG.
I rate meruem the highest. He is complex... new born and even made it the short span of his live questionable if we are right. Sometimes i think about about the world with such a ruler and basicly more time to adapt
- Iago (legit makes my blood boil) - Shaiapouf (i love how absurdly committed he is to his ideals, plus his dramatic soliloquies) - Nurse Ratched (her job/position makes her tyranny feel so much worse) - Long John Silver (layered and complex, feels so dangerous/imposing by the end) - Aizen (he's cool af, and I never believed for a second that the good guys could take him)
If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to find and watch the TV series Black Sails. It's sort of a prequel to Treasure Island mixed with some historical characters and events. It does some really interesting things with the characters of Long John Silver and Captain Flint. It has a somewhat shaky start (and is a bit frontloaded with violence and sex as most cable shows are) but once it gets going it has some of the most magnificent writing and performances on television (seasons 2-4 in particular).
President Snow from Hunger games. He's cruel, ruthless and he doesn't care about anything but power. And he's damn smart. Their cofrontations with Katniss were so damn entertaining to read. And the fact that the man has no regrets AT ALL...
Mine is :- Jeoffry Ramsey Euron Greyjoy, this list wont stop( when it comes to making horrible villains George is genius) Umbridge from harrypotter Doflamingo from one piece King Bradley from full metal alchemist Ayt Madashi from green bone saga Johan Liebert from Monster
This isn't what you asked for, but: I'd love to see a video where you suggest actors/actresses you think best to play roles for movie adaptations of books which haven't been done before...
I personally love villains who are terrible people, can do horrible things without any remorse yet STILL manage to make me laugh somehow. Exemple: the Joker, Spandam and Ceasar from One Piece, Aku from Samurai Jack.

Yo, I'm on book 3 of Liveship Traders. I'm constantly amazed both how good the story continues to be and how very different it is than Assassin's Apprentice.
I think that you will really like Kingdom. It's a war story manga. It's just like every war that have existed, but like no war story that have ever been told
I always like a villain that knows what they are doing is wrong and bad, but they do it anyway because it keep them satisfying for their own needs and goal. I also like a villain to be funny that is not taken serious and a villain that have the intelligence and the power that make them a threat
In my opinion some of the best villains in manga are Griffith from Berserk, Johan Liebert from Monster and Friend from 20th century boys, but when it comes to my favourite ones its probably Doflamingo from One piece and Lieutenant Tsurumi from Golden Kamuy. I don't really want to get to deep into the reasons why I love/hate them because of spoilers, but all I'll say is this, man I love/ despise me a good manipulator in a story and even more the ones that have somewhat human reasoning and bonus points for the ones who lead a misguided band of misfits ( I know the last part is wierdly specific but for some reason I love that trope, even if I don't come across it that often)
I am so curious about Ship of Magic now. When I think villains Doffy is my go to guy but lately I have been reading The Scum Villain's Self Saving System and wondering if Shen Qingqiu counts. He is technically the villain... But the rest would be spoilers. 😏
Marco Inaros from The Expanse. Having endured (and finally escaping) a relationship with a narcissist, I had a hard time getting through his storyline and not feeling deeply upset on a personal level. He was very well written as a wholly dispiccable character. In particular, the way he used and manipulated his son had me grinding my teeth in anger. Hate him.
My favourite villian is kunagawa from the manga media box. He makes the entire show. It's hard to recommend as the start of the series is trying to find it's footing a lot in a competitive environment in jump and in that environment there is fumbling in the begging until they find a popular direction for the story. But once it introduces kumagawa it's beautiful
Admittedly, I like villains with morally grey motivations, like they're characters you could side with because their logic is sound, it's not necessarily 'bad', but it just depends on the point of view of the reader and the characters seeing what's going on. It's like, the villain isn't even cruel, perhaps manipulative, but not harsh, it's a character that people actually like and want to follow, but his motivation is in the gray area and can be seen as right or wrong depending on the perspective.
Ooh that First Law trilogy bad guy was a kick in the teeth. Once I realised, I absolutely hated the guy, probably mostly because I didn't see it coming fully.
Favorite villains: Top 2 are the best, everyone else could go in any order. 1: Griffith (Berserk) 2: Johan (Monster) 3. Autarch Sartori (Imajica) 4. Unnamed (First Law) 5. Zaheer (Legend of Korra) 6. Roy Batty (Blade Runner) 7. Zeke Yeager (Attack on Titan) 8. The Joker 9. The Jackal (Red Rising) 10. Chrollo (Hunter X Hunter) There are a lot of villains that I love but my brain can't think of all of them. Hunter X Hunter has the best villains/antagonists cast ever.
My favorite villain of all time is Shira (although Anotsu Kagehisa is my favorite antagonist) from a manga called Blade of the Immortal. If there was someone you wanted to eradicate from the face of the Earth, it would definitely be Shira. Everytime he appears near your favorite characters, it always sends a chill down your spine. There was even a period in the story where he ended up having brain damage and he turned out to be even WORSE because he couldn’t feel pain anymore
Now there's a villain I haven't thought about in a while. What made him stand out was that all the other "villains" in that story had some noble goal, tragic backstory or redeeming quality that made them somewhat sympathetic or even likable at times. Shira was like "screw all that nonsense, I'm just here to rape, murder and rape whilst murdering all I want and have a good time".
Donflamingo is definitely a great villain. Honestly, he represents all the qualities in villains I like - good backstory and being able to understand their motivations, a lot of cruelty, and manipulation I also remembered, there was a kids series I used to read called wings of fire. It had a villain, a queen who basically captured prisoners, used them as playthings and tortured them, or forced them to fight to the death in an arena. She also manipulated a child soldier, basically, into psychotic loyalty of her, and into killing anyone that opposed her. Then she was poisoned, disfigured, then came back a few books later, took her family hostage, got the throne back, murdered a lot of people, then was finally killed
I think Zuko should qualify, I know he got one hell of redemption arc and he had good in him all along, but he was a great villain for 2 whole seasons. It was a joy to follow his journey
A villain I remember viscerally hating was Nyra from Guardians of Ga'Hoole. I don't think she was the deepest villain ever, but she was so evil and destructive that she earned every bit of my ire as I was reading the series
Seeing as Merphy has already mentioned First Law, I'll add that there are two characters in the followup Age of Madness Trilogy who are also pretty memorable (I'll avoid names for spoilers). One is a pretty terrible person, but I can't help but adore her, while the other has managed to steadily climb towards the top of my most hated and frustrating characters in the series over the course of the three books. Though she isn't necessarily an outright villain, I also really enjoy Phillipa Eilhart in the Witcher books and games, as she's such an interesting character and I always enjoy what she brings to the narrative. As for anime/manga/light novel/visual novel villains, anything written by either Ryukishi07 (Higurashi, Umineko etc.) and Ryogho Narita (Baccano, Durarara etc.) is guaranteed to have fantastic villains who you can both love and love to hate. I'll cut this short so that I don't wind up write essays about all of the villains I consider great. Villains are a really interesting topic in literature and media and it would be great to hear more on the topic from you.
Great discussion. It got me thinking about what makes a villain... well, villainous. Taking something or someone good and poisoning them and their "goodness", shows a true villain. Making truth into a lie. Making bad into good. Those are the WORST!
Hey merphy, it's me again.. Merphy, I got a suggestion. I am also a novel reader as well as manga but I don't think I can suggest many books you haven't read it, I can though, suggest mangas. So here I go. 1 - Naruto - I been rereading and It really reminded of you, there are plany of themes you enjoy like loyalty, found families, friendship and adventure. Naruto has been dismissed a lot lately but it is a really good series, the fights are smart like Hxh and so full of them, I think you would love it. From a business perspective is by far the best choice after one piece and is a finished series Wich is a good experience. 2 - Akatsuki no Yona - I don't know how is being your experience with fruit basket, because I never read it, but is definitely the best shojo I ever read. Even though you my not be interested in the romance plot, as I'm not, there is a lot mor going on. I hope that reachs you, because I'm gonna insist on it. 😂
Doflamingo’s madness really just. I don’t know what it is about characters consumed by anger, especially villains, because it causes them to act with intense extremity and abandon, but anger itself is a relatable emotion. We all feel it. Like it feels terrible to say but I couldn’t say that I wouldn’t end up like Doflamingo in his circumstances. There’s a scene in the anime, and I can’t recall whether or not it’s in the manga, but it probably is, where Doflamingo is remembering his family being tortured and he just can’t help but laugh at it all. Idk, I truly love “burn it all!!” characters. Great video! It is very entertaining watching you go off about these characters 😭
Martel, from David Eddings the Elenium series. He is the quintessential guy who had once been noble, but was pushed from grace, and ended up being a real Monster. You hate him, but you also feel kind of bad for him as well.

All 3 have an aura around them which signifies them as the one in control even in the worst case scenarios and the sense of superiority that each of them possesses is so natural and you would think that would be there biggest fault but it isn't. Its their attitude and the way they are presented that makes them such good characters in general
I agree with all of these 3. Although Aizen is weakest as a villain of the 3 imo
@@maazmunir9213 I agree, Bleach antagonist shouldn't be above Berserk antagonist.

doflamingo is still my favourite villain even after the recent saga
I figure we will get more for the most recent villain in the further story, but yeah I felt his flashback and motivations lacked a little bit
Have you ever read Worm?? It's a web series. I think it has a good Villain/Protagonist dynamic and even premises. You'll literally question other story if their powers was from Alien Eldritch Simulations.
spoilers man
I recently watched Season 1 of Jessica Jones, and what surprised me is that Kilgrave genuinely seems to believe he's done nothing wrong. Most of the justifications he gives are obvious bullshit, like when he says he never killed anyone because he makes other people do it. I think his worldview is so warped that he actually believes every word of his own BS and that's fascinating to me.
I admit that because he's played by David Tennant, I couldn't hate him straight away despite clearly being evil.
He's one of the best TV villains that I have seen. So good.
I'm on Rhythm of War from my Stormlight re-read. I won't say his original name because of spoilers but... Vyre. This man. Every single time he is on the page he makes my skin crawl and anger boil inside so hard that I almost want to skip to the next scene or POV. The arrogance and self-righteousness, the justifications, the blame shifting, the absolute horror of how he actually gets inside our beloved boi's head and is so close to making him lose it all. I hate hate hate hate him and I can't deal with my emotions about him in any rational way.
One of my favorite villains is Griffith from Berserk, and there is this guy you might now from HxH 😁
Best "I just hate them" Villains: Dolores Umbridge (Harry Potter) / Lukas Wykes (The Beginning After The End)
Best "Evil and relishing in it" Villain: DIO (JJBA)
Best "Outright terrifying" Villain: Johan Liebert (Monster)
Best "Loose cannon" Villain: Homelander (The Boys _TV Series_ )
Best "Understandable but still a monster" Villain: Griffith (Berserk)
Like that rat dude from Harry Potter?
@@SaturdayParker yeah, I guess he does qualify lmao personally I'm not that big of a fan of him tho

doffy is one of my favorite villains.the scene where the henchmen laughs at pica's voice and his explanation of how his officer agents are his family and that they are closer to him than his blood relatives and that monet and vergo gave there lives for him and you see how much it hurt him too have them do it even though we know how cold and heartless he can truly be.
And the first thing I thought was _It's a Trap!_
After all until then they had no real evidence that someone controlled their deaths, so for some Detective to go on live television and claim they are going to capture Kira sounded so sus...
Best rant I've ever listened to 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I just love how you said Kyle's name the first time round, basically everyone I know who has read Liveships says it the exact same way and its great XD
**SPOILER**
I love how he ends up essentially winning in the end, with everyone else being VERY aware that they are on borrowed time at the end of the series.
Love to see someone remembering shaman king.
Hao is awesome.
I love Hao, and I love his arc, he’s my favorite character since childhood. I absolutely hate the humor in the series though, and the way it handled his ‘defeat’.

Heartbreaking twist, aswell.

Doflamingo is my favorite antagonist in one piece but Blackbeard is still probably the most conniving and impactful one
Bondrewd from Made in Abyss is the only villain that has made me throw up with disgust from what he did. Not only is he horrible enough to leave an impression on me forever, but he is also so dang charismatic I can't help but like him despite everything he did.
One word: elevator 🤢
Bondrewd is on another level, what a villain, one of the very best I have seen.
A father who loves preparing lunchboxes.....
He up there.

I love you Merphy you're hilarious!!
Such an enjoyable video
I just want to say I really appreciate the way you said "Kyle" at about 2:23.

I've only read the blade itself but it is pretty obvious that you're talking about brother longfoot xD
Ooh that First Law trilogy bad guy was a kick in the teeth. Once I realised, I absolutely hated the guy, probably mostly because I didn't see it coming fully.

2: Johan (Monster)
3. Autarch Sartori (Imajica)
4. Unnamed (First Law)
5. Zaheer (Legend of Korra)
6. Roy Batty (Blade Runner)
7. Zeke Yeager (Attack on Titan)
8. The Joker
9. The Jackal (Red Rising)
10. Chrollo (Hunter X Hunter)
There are a lot of villains that I love but my brain can't think of all of them. Hunter X Hunter has the best villains/antagonists cast ever.
Ok so please read the manga called Monster from Naoki Urasawa, this story and its villain is soooo amazing.
Eyyy blade of the immortal, i feel that series gets slept on a bit, fire take 🔥
Now there's a villain I haven't thought about in a while.
I always have soft spots for villains that are calm, patient and careful planner. Something about them just unnerves me
Donflamingo is definitely a great villain. Honestly, he represents all the qualities in villains I like - good backstory and being able to understand their motivations, a lot of cruelty, and manipulation
I also remembered, there was a kids series I used to read called wings of fire.
4:30 Doffy
🤣🤣I shouldn't laugh at your pain, but your reaction to Hobb's character had me cracking up.
I think Zuko should qualify, I know he got one hell of redemption arc and he had good in him all along, but he was a great villain for 2 whole seasons. It was a joy to follow his journey
I like Azula as a villain more, but Zuko makes a good foil/protagonist
A villain I remember viscerally hating was Nyra from Guardians of Ga'Hoole. I don't think she was the deepest villain ever, but she was so evil and destructive that she earned every bit of my ire as I was reading the series
But we all know Black Beard will be the greatest villain of all time someday. It is his crown to be taken.
I love the First Law still my favorite series to this day, there are so many villains in that series but THAT VILLAIN is different 🧙🏻♂️
Uhhh can you do a video about twist villains?? Maybe a dear authors?
