- The Candela C8 is coming to Australia and it could change the way we think about marine leisure craft 👉 Read more Dandela stories here: www.boatsales....
Making electric boats efficient is difficult because they’re heavy and they’re pushing through a lot of water… but the Swedish-built Candela C8 does things a little differently, but using hydrofoils to lift the hull out of the water and reduce hydrodynamic drag.
As such, it doesn’t need a hugely powerful electric motor to propel it at reasonable speeds through the water. Indeed, the 50kW direct-drive e-motor can push the 1750kg leisure craft to 27knots in this case.
With room for eight passengers and a number of different body styles available, the Candela C8 is an intriguing new boat design that’s due in Australia later in 2024. But will it be worth the circa-$700,000 asking price? We took it for a spin to find out.

They should have use a toroidal propeller for max efficiency
2:14 At 1.2 kw hours per nautical mile it’s fuel cost would be only 8% of my current 20 foot boat. This is based on what I pay for electricity and petrol in my country.
I would like to see this operate in extremely choppy water.
Can the propulsion system be a jet prop.
This should be a standard on lakes.
$700000 for this small boat is too much.
ikr, like the early days of Tesla. let's hope it comes down over time.
700 AUD…
👍
If they've used parts from the Volvo group, why haven't they also used their hybrid power system with a small petrol or diesel to cruise with. A little 1.5 diesel engine would be more than enough power to let it cruise at 22 knots all day long.
hybrid is just a band-aid solution. just guy pure ICE or pure electric, two drivetrains = 2x the problem, weight and cost.
Hybrid's biggest pros are a more responsive throttle and regen when braking, both dont really matter for a cruising boat
