I was at this show. Some friends of mine and I heard there was a free concert for students at Auburn - and Mtv was filming it. It was The Godfathers (who we knew because they had a modest Mtv hit at the time), plus two other bands I didn't know: The Sugarcubes and Living Colour. We were attending Jacksonville State Univ. about 2 hours away. Five of us hopped in a tiny Honda hatchback and made the trek, only to find out it was free for AUBURN students. But the person at the window felt bad and let us in anyway. When The Godfathers played, the arena was full. When Living Colour came on, it was about half full. When The Sugarcubes came on, the place was all but empty. I don’t think people knew what to make of the latter two bands. The audience (what was left) crammed into the front to make it look crowded for the Mtv cameras. I thought The Godfathers were ok. But I was blown away by both Living Colour and the Sugarcubes - both of whom were largely unknown at that point. If anyone else tells you they were there and saw The Sugarcubes play, approach it with skepticism. There probably weren't more than 150 people there by the end of their show.
+Real.Piece.Of.Work. There were at the beginning of the night but not by the end of the show. If the video shows differently (I haven't watched every frame), I'd assume it falls under "creative editing."
+BAMADICK12. I believe that it was. Keep in mind I've only ever been to the Auburn campus once, and it was 28 years ago - that part of the memory is a little hazy.
Thanks for posting this! I knew it had to be the same show! As a kid up in Canada I saw the MTV broadcast of it (on muchmusic, most likely). It was called something like "The CMJ New Music College Assault" or something. I was kind of a Godfathers fan and major Living Colour fan, but I ended up recording this show on VHS because of this Sugarcubes performance. Just so....wow. They blew my mind. Watched the Living Colour and Sugarcubes performances for yeeeeeears afterward and feel like I noticed something new every time.
The whole point of the Sugarcubes was Einar/Bjork as a synthesis, it is art, it is bold, very Icelandic, and thankfully it's still taking the piss out of people decades later.
I can't stand the male vocalist. He's just barking over Bjork's beautiful singing. It spoils it for me; Bjork fan from the beginning of her solo career.
I fell in love with the Sugarcubes in the late 80s. They were amazing! It might be an unpopular opinion, but when Björk went solo with her style completely different from alternative music, I was disappointed in the electronica direction. Björk’s vocal prowess - melodic, screams, growling - with the Sugarcubes’ music was just mesmerizing, and solely missed on my part
i loved the band when i was a teen , i'm almost to tears listening to this again ... her voice cuts through the bones , makes me want to yell and jump off the roofs ... pure pop punk genius ...
Her vocals. Oh my god they're perfect. There is so much talent just emitting from everyone on that stage. This is raw talent in it's purest form. Long live Bjork and The Sugarcubes!
have to mention just how extraordinary ! is the 'Cubes drummer... Just remarkable, tight, inventive, hard driving... 5 stars. I loved the MTV airing of their show and it really elevated my musical taste to close out the 80's.
Sime kind of emotional expressive freedom as The Cure. Sadness happiness, playfullness and every feeling that human is capable of feeling. She loves life more than anything
Nope. Many others of us do too :). I find myself singing what I think Einar would have sung when I hear a Bjork solo track. It's amusing to me that the whole world kisses Bjork's butt now, but the Sugarcubes were by and large treated like crap on their first US tour. I saw them with Public Image Limited and New Order in Denver on that time and the audience was incredibly rude to them. And yet the band were the nicest people (met them after the gig).
I saw the sugarcubes around this time. When they performed Birthday it was like a transcendental experience. Björk's voice on that song was just unlike anything I'd ever heard live before. Amazing! (Gonna save myself some time: 03:30)
Sick for Toys is a great opener. I wish that I'd been anywhere near a show on this tour. The Sugarcubes were always seen as a "one hit wonder" band, but I like all of their music. While their existence was brief, they gave us a lot of great music. I'm glad Bjork's genius extended past the band's notoriety. So many memories.
Saw them live in Detroit , late eighties. About 2/3rds through the show someone threw a bracelet on the stage and it hit Einar in the eye. He threw a fit calling us all fuckers and he stormed off the stage. That ended the show. I was bummed because they were killing it on stage.
I have this on videocassette somewhere in storage. I saw the band just two months prior to this at The Roxy in Hollywood in August of 1988. Great band!
Ver a BJÖRK tan joven y linda...los SUGARCUBES me traen tantos recuerdos, los empecé a escuchar en 1988 cuando estaba en un internado en Madrid, gracias a una amiga que le encantaban, que también era muy linda también...ABTR
I don't get people banging on Einar. The wonderful interplay between his stupid chaotic masculinity and the elfish power of Bjork's beautiful femininity was what The Sugarcubes were all about. Sexy Chaos.
Einar is an awesome person also :D a kind and a very funny guy :) , and a bit chaotic :P :P his band Ghostdigital is pretty awesome :D ( more of that chaos :P )
I didn't realize just how much I liked him or the other members of the band until Bjork went solo. While she was clearly the star and focal point of the band, I never liked any of her solo work as much as I did as when she was with the Sugarcubes (at least for their very first 2 albums).
That transition into Traitor is the nastiest!! Darkness and light; chaos and order. You feel like anything can happen in that moment and anything is possible. Pure ecstasy
i never realy know any of the sugarcube stuff, only the stuff Bjork did after, wow there briliant. great creative songs and performance, great musician's, i always love the way Bjork uses her voice, i like the screams, very emotional, great rapping.
I remember watching this concert live on MTV. In Living Color preformed as well. This was at the time The Sugar Cubes/Bjork was becoming known to must of us here in the states🤘🏿😎
actually, this is alchemy....he s destroying in a artistic way what Bjork is constantly repairing by her shining voice.... but people dont get it.....Bjork alone would be good but not as much like this
zataraaaaaa well she obviously agreed to be in the band, if she didn't want him to sing with her she wouldn't have been in it. If you don't like it don't listen to it. it's that simple.
saw this tour, twice and the following year tour and Bjork's 1st solo tour. all were magnificent and I'll always cherish those shows years. 1988 was a Grand year. I was 22.. so long ago.. once before when we were hip and into the new, happening.
That's fair enough, but I think we also have to except that he was a member, a valuable member of The Sugarcubes who played the foil to Bjork's wonderful vocals. These kids were virtually sonic anarchists in their bands before they turned into The Sugarcubes, they weren't meant to be all sweetness and light, they were designed to lure you with Bjork's alluring voice and then stab you in the back with some odd time signatures, themes and Einar's jabbing contributions. It's what the Sugarcubes is.
I was fortunate to see them in SF in 1992. The FOH amps failed and Einar held a 150lb monitor wedge on his head to continue the show. I'm still shaking 34 years later. Pure Bliss... It's black coffee ☕ with sugar. Some people only consume sugar, it feels beautiful but rots the teeth and the quality of life is worse.
einar ruins it bjork is a generational talent, thank god she went solo

right? so fuken incredible.

Birthday is the most beautiful song ever written!
Sonically superb 🎂 Birthday 🌎 🔥 🕯.
Bjork is epic and sublime. ❤
Such a big voice from such a little thing! I forgot how much I love this most singular band.
agreed bro, i like em a lot.
WHAT!!! The Sugarcubes came to my area when I was 2 years old??!!!
I was at this show. Totally free. 120 minutes college tour. Junior at Auburn. What a great time to be alive

What a voice. Only Cocteau Twins can compare.
