In case you’re wondering who needs the services whether it be Apple or other satellite communication devices. Here’s something to think about. If you travel a lot like I do, I’m a long-haul truck driver. You will find you go through many dead spots in some areas of the country Where there is absolutely no cellular service for in some cases over 100 miles. I have run across people who have been broke down or people who have been involved in accidents with no way to call for help. That’s why I now have my iPhone 14 promax and I still carry my Garmin GPS, in reach unit.
Better than nothing, I guess. Honestly, this should be a mandated feature on all cell phones. If my out-of-service backup cell phone can annoy me at 1AM with amber alerts, then it should be able to beam a satellite SOS signal as well.
The most useful feature of my InReach is probably the weather, which can help me better plan a canoe trip while a storm arrives. It also let me send let me communicate with anyone, and preset messages are unlimited. I would love to see those feature on the iPhone too.
This would be good out west if you mountain or desert camp alot. Also, if you could use it at sea. They should have an activation fee with a per use fee. I use to use a Sat Phone in the Army and I think calls were $1/min.
Seems like the SOS feature really comes in real handy when you find yourself in a difficult situation. Network signals aren't always available in whatever region or place you're from.
Kind of disappointed that Apple isn't proactively deploying this in countries like mine that are situated in Southeast Asia where Tsunamis, Earthquakes, and Hurricanes/Typhoons happen frequently throughout the year. We NEED this and that's one of the reasons why we are all planning on upgrading to the iPhone 14 series. We badly need this, we experience 16 typhoons every year, blackouts that last weeks, etc.
Starlink could have been a much better company now but it’s owner decided to squander $44B onto another tech company that’s on the verge of bankruptcy. Apple’s innovative emergency service will improve over time without Starlink’s help.
Trying to locate a signal by physically moving here and there makes this practically useless in case of an actual emergency. This is like taking a matchbox in the middle of the woods instead of a torch. Just buy dedicated equipment.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes apple’s phone service in the future. Like in 5 years. If that happened, imagine how many subscribers Apple will have globally.
…uuuh, me`thinks simply ‘more’ people need to take {and update} certificate-classes in First-Aid Trauma Care simply for the benefit [and personal increase in self-esteem] of all family, friends and ‘people’ around you 24/7; rather than relying on “gliches” in technology [think: low battery, damaged phone (if you are ‘also’ injured), or, simply unable [you or the phone-tech] to make the satellite connection; Hallo 🤷🏻♀️‼️
Funny how WSJ has Joanna out there talking about Apple the whole time.

As always a common Joanna Stern W
imagine your drowning & your iphone makes you do a injury survey
Very informative and entertaining reporting. Thank you and keep these coming!

The emergency feature seems great........if your not in an actual emergency!

Woman who married rag doll says relationship is 'hanging on a thread' kind of funny. !
Apple should offer a pay per use because a monthly subscription would be useless due to subscribers non usage of this service monthly.
Dope
Joanna, I, too, miss the Blackberry style keyboard!!
These new safety features are very helpful. Great Job!
How is she turning and jumping around with that traumatic injury from falling off a bridge?
does anyone happen to know it’s effectiveness while in Europe?

Among us
Another solid Apple video from Joanna and the Journal crew😁
Why i love Apple!
There’s should be a test option. 911 should prepare for many false emergencies
Thats not how it works. SOS via globalstar will go to relay center. Not directly to 911 Emergency
there is a test option. It's called demo though and it doesn't really contact 911
Highlight of the video, “to the right to the right”
yess i am having heart attack and i have time to move myself and locating satellite signal ..
Then I think 911 would be your better option. This is for off the grid emergencies. Why would you go off grid if you have heart issues?
should you trust Apple with your life? lol....
If you have to
I would rather have this than not so yeah
Always a fun time with Joanna😆
does the crash detection work for iPhone 14 pro max? I am just asking cause I have one and I’m curious
Does it work on the ocean on a boat?
SOS features are useful but hopefully they aren't equally intrusive too.

Oh wow iphone 14
Means you've posted the same videos 13 times before...now it's 14...what else is *new*?!
Setting emergency contact on iPhone
Update to this video, Apple now offers messaging friends and family via satellite as part of iOS 18.
when starship is ready to fly, starlink service will be much better than apple emergency service

IS WORK FOR IPHONE 13 ?
Now that you know the horrible work conditions of Foxconn employees, would you be willing to buy a iPhone 14??????
It only works if you are in California parks
Super informative! Thank you

Wow
by the time you make contact for getting help you will be dead but apple would have sold many phones through wsj
“Apple gave me this test phone” aka this is an ad video paid by Apple
Or, they provided a phone that they know will trigger the SOS, rather than someone using their actual phone
If you’re drowning how does someone have time and ability to be searching for a satellite signal
False satellite calls from other RUclipsrs inbound.
Emergency🆘 and I have a good time to be the first time to get 7
god help you if we really need this new iPhone "service"....
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Insanely great! Jobs is rolling in his grave...

Meh
It would be great if Apple adds Geiger Counter and Air Pollution Measuring into Apple devices.
Welcome to the SOS feature Android been having for years now 😅🤣😂

Does it work on an airplane? You know, incase it gets taken over by an unknown individual(s).
@Phillip Banes well, duh 🙄 was it that obvious?
Still need to find a signal. 🤷
SOS great for a mother-in-law’s….🎉😮🫵🫡🗽🇺🇸🥂👩🏻🥇🥳🎉🚑🚨🚑🚨🚑🙌🙌🙌🙌
