Fun fact: At some point during the development of DS3, Pontiff Sulyvahn was supposed to be the final boss of the game and his theme was the current main menu theme that we have. No wonder why his name is all over the item descriptions.
No way, i would k!ll for a boss fight with the main menu theme .
He was also originally titled the “Old Black King.”
@@MrTrueCaller619 We kinda got that with Elden Ring. Also I assume that it became the main menu theme after they decided that Pontiff would not be the final boss.
If you know the lore you know how important to the story he still is
I’m glad they didn’t go that approach honestly. It doesn’t fit the theme of the game as well as the final boss they chose and Pontiffs placement in Irrithyl is perfect imo
Sulyvahn is one of those rare Fromsoft bosses whose actually sane enough to be evil, he probably hangs out with Mohg, Nashandra, and [REDACTED] from Sekiro.
I would like to issue a formal apology to
Lord Mohg. I understand now that I have made inaccurate assumptions that have negative impacted him and all those within his dynasty.
Sulyvahn def drove me nuts at first. There is a reason why that person left s sign at the door. Bastard ahead lol you really can't get greedy with attacks on this guy.
@@josephinejekyl5848 It was more about the Lore aspect. Sulyvahn is the typical "Evil because Evil Guy" in DS3.
@@V-u-l-p yea i figured that too, but my first thought when i saw it was, this is gonna take more then a few attempts. The sign ain't wrong though. This guy is pretty sick
Which character did you have in mind for Sekiro?
@@wundt626 I’m not gonna say it because Mati hasn’t played Sekiro yet and I don’t wanna spoil anything, but if you remember the story and how the different endings play out you can probably guess.
Of all the people I’ve watched play this game, online or irl, you are by FAR the most calm and understanding! It’s a wonder how readily you engage the boss on its level - there’s no rage, it’s just “damn, I’m panic-rolling, I should try not to next time.” The ability to recognize that is very, VERY refreshing.
100% agree. It’s so inspiring. Made me go back to Elden Ring and approach certain bosses differently. Stay calm, learn moves, don’t rage and just have a ton of fun.
48:03 That is Nashandra from Dark Souls 2. It is the same painting that curses you in Drangleic Castle.
The paintings next to it are:
The Old Iron King’s Throne
Duke’s Archives
Eleum Loyce
Anor Londo
One of them also looks like, Spoilers for DS3:
One of the thrones of the pygmy lords from the Ringed City?
I think the throne is the "throne of wants" from DS 2
Didn't even picked up on the DS2 callbacks. So glad Mati didn't skip DS2.
@@leithaziz2716 no yeah SPOILERS:
All of those paintings are teasers for the DLC. You have; The Pygmy throne and the place from Ashes of Ariandel
Death Count: 90
13:50 Thanks for the shoutout man! Massively enjoying the series
Of course bro! 🤘
Been waiting for this episode. Nearly every boss from this point onwards is an absolute banger.
Lets gooo im so stoked!
@Mati He's right. And Boi is the cape dope. Embered like you, but touched by Dark.
Bro, the one we will not name, I can't wait to see that fight.
@@karri-sebastiancalitu4306 same the boss you said and the boss with the initials D.M I’m looking forward to that one too.
I can guess which one isn’t the banger
whenever mati post ds3. my day immediately becomes better by a solid 9001%
:) same, classic!
My heart… I appreciate you joyboy
Same : - )
nah fr I be waiting all day for an episode to come out
@@cheesously6234 and that's ong 😤
I can't gush enough about Irithyll. It's one of my favorite settings in the series. From an aesthetic viewpoint, I'm always impressed by the sight you get of the city when you first leave the Catacombs. After being surrounded by a gray color pallete throughout, Irithyll feels straight out of a fairy tale (in a beautifull manner).
I KNEW those horrable spider things would have a viceral effect on him 😂
I expected nothing less from you Toyoda
Seriously, I was a bit worried. Mati didn't look too happy ...
@@TomLok He became physically ill. Imagine if those spiders were even a little harder to kill than dogs
@Mati you said that you can't use the weapon art with a shild? That is wrong bro 🤣 there are shields that let you use it while you are blocking. You need to switch your shild. And please try the weapon art for the exiled greatsword. You have to press the button multiple times and mix with attacks. I like that weapon art more than the sword that you have equipped.
@@thetoyodacar22642ععص7ع جدع
Everything from this point forward is 10x better than what u have been thru so far. Most anticipated series for me. Keep it up🥵🥵
Holy and it’s already been amazing 😅 I’m so stoked!
AYOO
@Mati the shields are more likely than the ones in Elden Ring. Some have skills and you can use the weapon art while you're blocking with the shild. I told you about this multiple times 🤣. Shields have skills themselves some let you use the weapon art.
@@tobitroyer9429 i am greedy and mostly use the shield of want 😗
The barrier at the start Irithyll of the Boreal Valley only lets you through with the Small Doll from the Cathedral. If you hadn't done that boss yet, then you wouldn't have been able to continue.
Yes that bridge is basically meant for you to sprint 🏃♂️ into safety behind that wall 🧱.
37:40 if you hadn’t killed the watchdog on the bridge it would have jumped down and chased you through the water, it’s an interaction even I missed because I’ve typically killed it in the ambush 🤣
Mati: "Anything with legs scares the shit out of me."
Scared of every living thing in life ;)
Mati when he sees tables and chairs 😳
Besides Snakes and Worms...and late Anakin Skywalker
When you go to the dungeons Siegward mentioned, do not enter any boss rooms until you have found and helped Siegward again or you will permanently miss his questline.
The sudden reveal of Irythill coming out of the cave to me is in my Top 3 Holy Sh*t moments in FromSoft games. The other two moments being going down the siofra river elevator for the first time and realising there's another layer to the already gigantic world of Elden Ring and the other one is when you finally arrive at that place in Sekiro (if you know you know).
@@chase6579 It's up there for sure it's just hard to pick a Top 3 when we have so many awesome games to choose from!
...yeah, hitting Irithyl is a real turning point in the game. I love the first sections, but the feel of the game really shifts... which makes sense, there's... you start on the High Wall, and basically spiral down into the underworld, have a "dark night" (literal) passage through the underworld, and emerge into the real world of the game. Other areas may or may not be even more beautiful, or awe inspiring or other variations, but nothing in the game beats the experience of coming out of the catacombs to that view.
@@kayla8402im playing ds3 for the first time since the ringed city came out after doing an all bosses region lock randomizer in er. I just came out to irithyll today and had that "oh shit" moment again. Its so beautiful and daunting at the same time. And then an irithyll knight sent my ass back to the bonfire and brought me back to reality. Lmao
Gotta Respect Mati for being an anime hero. Watching Bosses transitioning in their second phase without hitting them.
LET'S GOOOOO, have been so excited for you to get to this part of the game! Watching this immediately!
It was a trip and half 😅 fav souls area in a long long time
Same!
@@matiasgago Including the sewers? I hope you totally forget those things from here on onwards
@@tapsin3923 He can't though, he has to go back to get to that other path, later on.
@@3dmaster205 But it's not necessary to enter, he can run through the river to the other side
The reveal of this place is breathtaking ,Fromsoft always has amazing places but this one is one of the top tear one❤
They really went crazy with this one 😅
@Mati please you have to notice that you can use your weapon art while you're blocking. You need to read the skills for the shields 🛡. Shields are more like in Elden Ring. They have skills themselves and you need to read them. Some let you use the weapon art while you're blocking. You will appreciate that in harder times. 🤣
You talkin about the whole valley or the cathedral where sulyvahn at?cause for me the best boss fight area is sister friede
The most beautiful place ever
Outrageously beautiful
@@matiasgago😅😮
YESSS FINALLY couldn't wait to see how you do to pontiff, first real challenging boss imo
Challenging indeeeed bro
Hardest boss in the game for me including the Nameless King & Soul Of Cinder.
(without the parrying)
@@MrTrueCaller619 Why do you spoiler boss names?
@@MrTrueCaller619 you should totally change this before mati sees it. Major spoilers bro
@@MrTrueCaller619 delete this shit bro 😂
"I almost threw up in my coffee. That would've been good content."
Me, who has severe emetophobia (fear of vomiting): Neither of us is safe in these videos
Fun fact, Sully's design was originally going to be used for the last boss of the game but they changed the lore so it got repurposed to his current version and placement. For a good while Sully was my favorite Souls boss, man's an absolute beast.
Can’t wait to watch after work! I have a feeling you’re gonna absolutely love this area and the next
We'll be here when you get off chief
The barrier on the entrance of the city would stop you if you didn't kill the Deacons before arriving in Irithyll, that's what the doll you get is for and why there's the funny sound and the crazy dog guarding the bridge. Irithyll is one of my favorite places in the game, good luck Mati!
This series never disappoints 🙏
My man 🙏🏽
You have been really impressive with your extemporaneous lore analysis. Picking up on certain things, callbacks to the lore of previous games, and applying them to the lore snippits of the current game. Looks like all the lore and chill videos have really sunk in :)
Fun fact, pontiff sulivahn was originally going to be the final boss of DS3, and the menu theme was his theme during early development. However they scraped it during development.
We got one of the best main menu tracks out of it, so I see it as a win.
If you want to fight what Pontiff Sulyvhan could've been, play the Convergence Mod.
@@broccolin Isn't that just Pontiff with Isshin's moveset? Cause movesets like that just tend to be a pain to fight when put out into a different game where you have stamina and other limitations.
No way lmao I am glad we got the menu music we have now though that shit is an anthem
Yes, he has the spear in his new third phase, but also the main menu music.
Pontiff's six-piece-no-drink is the predecessor to Malenia's waterfowl dance and you can't convince me otherwise.
This is so brilliant! In fact, he's a proto-Elden Ring boss in a lot of ways the more I think about it. Great observation!!!
Absolutely love the videos, always a highlight of my days
It’s my highlight bringing it to you guys
The Pontiff is one if not the most evil character in DS lore, an ambitious sorcerer from a painted world that was able to dethrone the old gods (Can't say more cuz i don't want to spoil my man mati )
lmao in terms of evil this guy is nothing compared to the next boss mati will fight.
@@illusion8457 He is the boss of the next boss pal, go watch vaati XD
False...man got corrupted by the Profaned Flame while exploring once he got out of the painting..
*steps out of painting*
"AYO THE GODS NEED TO DO THEIR JOB"
*finds the gods*
"AYO WTF ALL THE COOL GODS ARE DEAD?"
*imprisons the survivors*
*establishes himself as the Pontiff, claiming to speak on the gods behalf*
*Seeks the profaned flame*
*seeks the power of the darkmoon*
*succeeds in harnessing both*
*established the Church of the Deep, a corrupted version of the original religion, and used it to exert his influence over the people.*
*allies with Aldrich so he can eat the gods while he stays in power*
*makes attacks on lothric itself hence vordt and other outrider knight locations.*
*does all this and hes literally not even from this world, hes from a fucking painting.*
absolute GIGACHAD
@@Earendil760 he probably isn't, some things hint that there wa sa fight in iryhtil between him and the next boss. they're not allies, at least since the lords woke up
Let’s goooo been hype for this one! 17k subs already. Good shit Mati!
Crazy to think about bro I love this community 🫶🏽
God i am having such a fantastic time with this series, easily my favorite souls game, and it only continues to get better.
Its so fun seeing someone who gets so invested in these games experience what it has to offer, can't wait for more of this playthrough.
My favorite boss (outside of the final one of the series)
The man that is responsible for everything set in motion in Dark Souls 3, the man who desired the first flame to fade away, the man who ensured it and climbed to the top to make it happen
The Pontiff Sulyvahn
Word of advice, for future bosses try rolling into attacks and not away from them. I know it can be scary but the day I figured that out it helped me so much in order to survive in this games.
Still I love your videos bro! You're amazing and very entertaining.
I miss Hollow Knight so much 😂😂 can't wait for the day you bring it back ❤
"It makes sense that there are no children in these games."
And no infants, either. Nooooo infants...🙄
Not sure if you figured it out yet, but the painting at 48:04 is actually Nashandra from Ds2. Also, love your videos man, keep up the great work!👍
Right, I’m caught up - just finished smouldering lake episode. Flying through this game man. Cannot wait to see you take on nameless king.
Honestly so happy to see how quickly your channel is growing too man. You make great content. I hope you continue to kill it with these videos and keep growing. Much love
57:38 The frost damage came from the jar that the archer broke with his arrow. A similar thing was happening down in the catacombs in previous episodes where you were rolling and breaking jars that were shooting purple dark magic spells and I think you thought it was coming only from the skeletons and didn't realize what actually was happening.
I am impressed with how fast you are advancing and you finally reached the beautiful Irithyll, keep it up Matiii🎉🎉
Your playthrough inspired me to replay the game and finally try the ringed city dlc myself and i just beat pontiff. God i hate that guy😂
Lets goo love to hear it bro
That dlc goes hard, some amazing bosses, hope you enjoy it!
Fromsoftware have such a talent for creating those amazing cities and architectures, that's the kind of stuff you'd never see anywhere else.
The area after Pontiff Sullyvahn's boss room is a huge spike in difficulty and you are intended to do Irithyll Dungeon first, the entrance to which is down in the hairy centipede river.
Dude will ascend to heaven in the next episode 😅 well provided he won't tour the dungeons first. I respect that you pushed through the sewers. That fear was palpable, hope you're ok.
That first spot in the beginning where you killed the Crystal lizard, might be due another thorough inspection 😉Loving your Playthrough man, keep it up and thank you for allowing us to live vicariously through you.
"You bastard ahead" might be the most appropriate message ever left in a souls game. Also, Sulyvahn is definitely Martyr Logarius 2.0
100% got the same vibe, but i enjoyed Martyr much more. Pontiff's endurance and combos were at first, veeeeey overwhelming😭
Ive watched so many ds3 playthroughs but im really hyped to see your videos, really just a vibe fr
and i love that you also read descriptions, listen to the music etc a vid every 2 days has become part of my routine
There truly is nothing like coming upon a view in a Fromsoft game, it’s often like a reward for all the hardship.
The spider lady reaction is something that I can understand. Those centipede monsters are jarring the first time.
As well as hidden doors there may be a hidden balcony of sorts off the main square before the little cathedral
The entrance to Irithyll is protected by a kind of force field that you can only cross if you have a doll, which you had. Otherwise you wouldn't have been able to cross it.
It's extra cool since Pontiff rules over irithyll and he's from the painting and in ds1 we used the doll to enter the painted world.
Pontiff is the skill check of the game like Ornstein and Smough. I was stuck on him all night the first time I fought him. lol
Great episode! For me, Pontiff was the first boss of the game that actually got my blood pumping and the heart racing. I'm pretty sure the boss becomes trivial if you are good at parrying, but always had a though time parrying in DS3 compared to DS1. Definitely where the game really starts to pick up!
This channel's ratio of subs to views and likes is kinda crazy. You can see why tho, the guy's genuinely awesome. Keep doing what you're doing my dude!
you give me something to watch at work today, thanks dude, it was clutch.
Those centipede-woman-monsters are one of the most horrifying creatures I've seen in anything ever.
I’ve been waiting for 84 years to see Mati do this boss and it didn’t disappoint. Hold on to your seat my dude, there’s a lot more coming your way! So glad to see you enjoying this, peak content 100%
Wow. I was soooooo excited for this episode. And you did not let us down Mati. Excelent content. Love your playthrough so far!!!!
It is SOOO much fun seeing you geek out over the boreal valley just like most of us did back in the day :D A nice treat for making the trek through the catacombs.
The angel in me loves to see Mati enjoy the heck out of these games and kick ass.
The devil in me loves to see Mati discover the spider creatures because it's funny as shit.
Man Mati actually nailed the Anor Londo theory right out of the cave.
Kinda like how the Silver Knight archers on the walkways going to nail him to the wall when he gets to them
EVERY TIME I THINK ABOUT A NEW EPISODE: MATI PROVIDES!
Woooooo!!! Let’s go!
We back babiiii 🙏🏽
This ,anor londo in ds1 and leyndell defintely best areas in the series. And all of yharnam.
Fun fact: Dataminers have found that at some early point in DS3's development, Pontiff Sulyvahn was the game's final boss. It seems that in this early version, the whole game's story was vastly different, but we dont have any details that I'm aware of.
Sulyvahn is my personal favorite boss in DS3. I like how relentless he is. He's really good at keeping pace and the sounds of him grunting and slamming his sword into the ground makes it feel like he's actually trying to kill you.
If U R not able to parry him, he would've been THE hardest boss in all of Soulsgames . IMHO.
@@MrTrueCaller619parrying him ruins the boss fight imo. Same with champ gundyr.
great episode!!!! when you got sulyvahn i cheered with you ahaha. a great boss!
Glad to see this, have been binging your DS1 series between these DS3 episodes, just starting your journey to Artorias now. Its been a pleasure to watch you experience and react to one of the most amazing videogame series around. Its been a pleasure and I'm so glad YT recommended your channel to me!
putting the boss attempt number below the webcam is so clutch, i've never seen anybody who wasn't a speedrunner do that on a first playthrough
Agreed. :)) Loved that addition
One of the best bosses and one of the most beautiful areas in the game, I've been waiting for this!
Remember, if you want to skip dialogue do it normally if its the first time you heard it, never walk away, you miss things an NPC may give you, you missed the sleep gesture from Siegward again 😭
This game was my first souls game, and it remains my favorite. Some really cool stuff coming up! Excited to see you experience it for the first time too!
This series is so good, haven't enjoyed a playtrough as much since your bloodborne one.
I had the same reaction seeing Irithyll for the first time from the lookout point. The contrast from the previous area was a breath of fresh air. And the fact it has a very bloodborne vibe.
My day has immediately become better with this upload!
24.41 you indeed had me a bit worried😅. Loving ds3 though
I remember hiding behind the biggest shield I could find at this point. Can't believe you beat him like this! Great job!
I always do Irithyll dungeon before doing the Pontiff so props to Mati for doing the harder part first
The painting of that woman in the same room as Gwynevere's is actually Nashandra from DS2
Your excitement for cool connections between the series is great, they make me relive and appreciate this game more and more
Good job on Pontiff! I don't know how long the next episode will be so I'd post a little hint for the future:
When you're gonna go into the dungeon explore it extremely thoroughly before you engage the boss of this place since there's gonna be an awesome interaction that's very easy to miss
Keep up the good stuff!
I played ER first and was used to the insane combos the bosses do there, but DS3 first bosses are so slow paced (compared to ER) that I got thrown off when I got to the Pontiff, he took me an insane amount of tries.
Congrats on beating the Pontiff!
Mati: *dabs twice*
Mati: "That was not a dab" lol
Just gonna say this again Mati:
For MOST attacks roll towards the back of the enemy in the direction the attack is coming from. You end up on his side or behind him and it will close distance allowing for more attack openings
I get so HYPED when a new Mati DS3 video drops. Genuinely the second half of DS3 and the 2 DLCs are god tier in the soulsborne series. You are in for a treat 😬
I've been waiting for this moment so long! Extremely hyped!
We are here 🫶🏽
A suggestion to add an extra layer of tension and fun to the playthrough:
You're never going to run out of embers. Given that, it would be interesting to try and endeavor to stay human as long as possible. Never knowing when an invader will show up is how I personally love to play these games and I think it'll add an extra comedic element (not that you need any help!) to the playthrough. Consider it!
Also seeing Mati turn the tables and become the invader a couple times would be interesting too
Yeah I didn't use embers my first playthrough and got to the end of the DLC with like 60 of them.
the fun begins now. the first truly difficult boss of this game. but so much fun, the hard bosses in this game feel like dances you need to learn almost
Its always a treat to see irithyl for the first time. So beautiful. And then the dog appears lol i took a screenshot for the memory
We all collectively knew about the spideresk Bois and collectively said....nothing. xD we love you Mati.
I've been stoked for you to reach Irithyll! Such a beautiful place. Also, Pontiff is a hell of a boss.
love the videos, playing along with you! i want a compilation of all the times Mati backs off a staggered big-boyo instead of going in for the critical 😂 never gets old 🎉
When the attempt counter went up when you first entered, i knew we were in for a show! Great episode!!
Keep it up! Irityll is my favourite area when it comes to the vibes of it all, it also helps it being topped off with an awsome boss like Pontiff. Really looking forward to the rest of the episodes, IMO areas and bosses are just gonna get better!
Wow, watching this makes me so nostalgic as it was my first souls game. I knew so little.. beautiful.
Nice job Mati. Sulyvahn is one of those road block bosses, he's one of the toughest bosses in the game. Really good job.
Been watching since you started Bloodborne and honestly every episode I’m so impressed by the quality of your content, makes my day ad gets me hype for the future of your channel, so keep doing what you’re doing because it’s working 🙌🏼
Let's gooooo back in the day everybody used to do pvp fight clubs behind pontiff
Those pontiff knights destroyed me until I realized you just have to press them and never stop attacking
Same lol
That's literally 90% of the enemies in this game
As a dagger main, this was my main and only way. I was forced to do it almlst hitless do to my very low defense overall. Most of his attacks one-shot me.
Pontiff is one of, If not the hardest bosses in the game. His move set is very unpredictable to read, and as soon as the attack is finished, another one comes out of his pocket. You're not the only player with arachnophobia, there are a lot of people like that. One thing I don't understand is that I never got that beast on the bridge, I always had to fight it down in the water. It scared the shit out of me. Literally speaking, this is not a game to play if you're having colic pain, and I really mean that. Great video, once again. Keep them coming, we're here to cheer you up. Kind regards.
Love seeing you start the boss fight and there still being 1/3rd of the video left. haha
absolute best episode of this series so far. area top notch, jumpscare was golden, boss tough but fair, struggle was real. loving DS3 plays sooo much, but also my heart aches for hollow night too. cant wait next video brother. lets gooo!
don't know what hits harder, that second phase music, or the boss. you nailed it dude!
Oh hell yeah i was hoping this would come out today. Guess i know what I'm watching the gym today!!
