This movie feels like we are actually transported into the times of Mayan civilization. The big reason is Mel's decision to use the actual language and the hard work they did in costume design. Mel is an extraordinary director. I feel sad that he didn't get any awards for "The Passion" and "Apocalypto," but he has won the hearts of his audience which is above all awards.
As mel said they use real jaguar who is standing for real to jump the man.. I know it was real at first without the behind story. I think he is man trained wild jaguar
Impossível receber um Oscar sobre qualquer filme que coloca a brutalidade dos judeus nua e crua, ou seja, como ela é. Neste filme apocalipyto narra nas entrelinhas finais a chegada dos judeus nas Américas.
No it doesn't. If you actually know anything about that period of history you would 99% of this is movie nowhere near Mayan history or culture. You can't have smallpox in Mayan society, or have Mayan bei g astonished at a city, or starvation on that scale, also the sacrifice was way overboard and more akin to Aztec not Mayan, and then the Spanish come in at the end. He isn't very good at getting history correct. Only have to watch Braveheart to know tell8ng a correct story isn't important
It’s unbelievable just how good this movie is. Most of the actors had no previous experience & the sheer amount of emotion and intensity, 95% of hollywood “greats” cant deliver something like this. This movie has and always will be my number 1.
I am still baffled why Mel Gibson didn't get an oscar for this. 16 years later I am still moved by this movie although it's brutal. It's a complete masterpiece; No one has ever done such a movie.
@Arlette_Fitover40 - Personally, I'm not suprised about it at all. The whole Hollywood (pretty much that would include every movie studio, management (and top level studio executives and so on) - is about perception, politics, statistics regarding the movies, current marketing trends, and so on. Like everything in US. Money and greed, with a bit of marketing here and there. So personally I'm not suprised about it, considering the so called "Hollywood" approach to anything different, or general approach to something like a native population and so on.
Unfortunately, Gibson was being 'blacklisted' by Hollywood at just about the perfectly wrong timing for the movie. I recall it got some nominations but only for things like set design or some technical awards and then was 'shunned' and "that which shall not be spoken". for sure, its just an astonishing movie but for political/social reasons it was 'canceled'
This movie is in a league of its own. Never seen anything ever like it and probably never will. Stunning cinematography combined with an amazing yet gory story line, easily makes this thriller one of Mel's best!
Just when I was thinking about how to translate these thoughts into English, I came across your comment. You wrote what I was going to write, I don't have to write anymore.
What I appreciate about the gore in this film is that it all makes perfect sense. Everything about the gore is reasonable for the setting. Of course they would use captured and enslaved people as target practice. Of course being impaled would rip the breath from your body. Of course blunt force trauma directly to the temple would involve a little spurt of blood from your temporal lobe. It’s gory as hell, but that’s because these things are realistic, and things EXACTLY LIKE THIS actually happened, all over the world, in societies amid development.
Honestly.. it probably is the greatest film ever made.. considering that its real-world.visually, its on par with LotR.. but, not fantasy/not cgi.. I don't have to explain 😉
I watched this film as a child with my much older cousins. I knew it was something special, 20 years later I still stand by that. Great great piece of cinema.

When Mel Gibson made this movie,i realized that making good movie doesnt need famous actor or actress to cast.Choosing a right material or story and a good Director is the key.Braveheart,Patriot,Passion of the Christ,Apocalypto are all great movies.
I agree! I think Mel Gibson is one of the greatest producers of all times! I didnt know who produced some of those movies until after seeing them and I was blown away to find out every movie I absolutely love is produced by Mel Gibson! What an AMAZING mind!!!!
For all of you out there wandering why Mel didn’t get nominated for this movie which is masterpiece and very cinematography unbelievable is because Mel was blackballed by Hollywood elites . Even passion of Christ was a masterpiece
Yep. He made the mistake of having an opinion and that is not allowed if it breaks the New Rules decreed by an army of hypocrites. He had to be punished.
The BALLS it took to make this film and the BRILLANCE in which Gibson pulls it off cannot be overstated.. No other word to describe it other than MASTERPIECE...
I've watched it again recently after so many years when it came out, it still gives out the same feeling when i first watch it. Pure epic awesomeness. Mel Gibson's work is really one of a kind.
I definitely agree that it's a great movie, but I struggle to think of anything understated about it. The vibrancy and difference of their culture to our own, the violence, the costuming.... all seems blindingly extravagant to me (and the better for it)
This movie would have won at least 4 academy awards had Mel not been blacklisted. He was forced to finance the film himself and astonishingly used a lot of non local actors and was able to coach them into giving an incredibly real performance. Truly incredible

too much work, not enough profit. They prefer stuff they can just subcontract out to computer artists that will return 5-10x as much in revenue. To hollywood, there is no reason to make these movies. And now with streaming you arent' likely to ever see movies like this get made again. This movie made maybe 20-40 million in profit, and that was with a full theatrical release, today nobody would go see it and it would be a financial disaster. Just look at "The Last Duel".
Apocalypto is a masterpiece and I was very disappointed Hollywood politics got in the way and deprived Gibson and his team of the recognition they so deserved for this.
God rest my mother, this was one of her favorite movies of all time!! It took me a bit to convince her to watch it...she said "I don't like subtitled movies, I always pay attention to the subtitles more and end up missing the movie"...well, she ended up watching it anyway after my recommendations, and it became one of her most watched movies as something she could revisit when there was nothing else on she liked! She smiled so big when I found out she took my advice..."You were SOOO right!! Even with the subtitles...it somehow makes it BETTER!! I didn't think I'd ever think that!" I miss my mother. She was an open-minded woman...RIP Mom❤
Apocalypto is a masterpiece of film making. Brilliantly done, amazing cast and support actors. I am puzzled why few talk about it now in the early 21st Century. Gibson seems like an amazing energetic manic director with crativity and vision few have ever possess. I rate this film in my list of the ten top eye-popping movies ever produced.
Maybe it's just because in some scenes of the movie..it's too Savage.. although the story needs such scenes, some don't have the guts to watch removing of organ in such a way..even it should be rated to 18 and above, because some parts are really disturbing.
I remember I walked in to my brothers room when he was watching this when I was about 12 or so, he immediately told me to get out and wait till I’m older to watch this. So that’s what I did and now I’m 23 and just watched it for the first time thinking now was a great time to watch this especially with the eclipse that is coming and I’m much older. And wow what a film. It’s one of those movies you wish you never saw because after the first time you watch it, you just want to go back and watch it again and again without knowing what happens next. Such a phenomenal film, it’s really a masterpiece!
As a person with southamerican native roots myself, I was very sceptic of this movie at first. I must say, that sentiment turned into fascination. One of the best movies I’ve seen so far.
*MEL GIBSON IS ONE OF THOSE DIRECTORS THAT NEVER SETTLES FOR ANYTHING LESS THAN PERFECT AND HE GETS IT!!* *IT'S WHAT SEPARATES HIS WORK FROM ALL OTHERS, HE'S A GENIUS IN HIS CRAFT OF INCREDIBLE FILM MAKING !!!*
Till this day I always thought Mel went to a community that actually existed like this with their culture kept untainted to shoot this movie. The movie felt so real and amazing to the extent that I was convinced some how that some of the scenes were shot at a real place. Everything they put in this movie is an absolute master piece of an art. Such dedication
Mel Gibson has copped a lot of flak over the years, but this film was iconic and represents him at the peak of his creativity. I remember when it first came out, my eyes never left the screen from start to finish, masterful storytelling that will be appreciated far into the future.
Only saw this recently... Mel Gibson is a beast of a creative talent. Hollywood would never produce something this original or interesting. It's only Marvel, Star Wars, or stupid ghost movies. So grateful there are people like Mel trying to do original things.
A truly magnificent and realistic film by Mel Gibson! The cinematography, costumes and set design, historical perspectives, location and everything coupled with unknown actors that did well. A masterpiece!
Mel Gibson gave us students at The Institute of American Indian Arts a chance to watch the film before it's premier. Went to a small local theater in Santa Fe, NM and everyone watched it and had a good time.
I am an Indian. This is one of those movies that felt like a miracle. This movie takes our mind to another world. Thanks to its director MEL GIBSON & FARHAD SAFINIA for making such a movie. Let this miracle happen again
Hands down one of the best movie I have ever seen! The first time I watched it I was super young and had to hide lol but I got to watch the full movie and wow it’s amazing! This movie deserves an award till this day!
Thank heavens for film-makers like Gibson who aren't afraid to be bold and original, and be highly creative about it. I wish there were more movies like this for those of us who aren't into comic book characters, space wars and zombies. Apocalypto is a stunning movie. If ancient Mayan culture _didn't_ look the way it does in the film, I'd be pretty surprised. Everybody involved certainly did their homework.
Mel is a genius, He is a true artist and one of the greatest directors. This film along with The Passion of the Christ, is a masterpiece, both are. Amazing films, amazing director. Massive respect for MG.
Masterpiece of a film form a Genius filmmaker. This is one of those cinematic gems that generations will always discover and love, it is a timeless story and amazing civilisation it shows us. Thank you Mel.
I loved this movie too. but please don't confuse it with authentic history. If you want to know the truth, watch the "History buffs" take on this movie. It's on RUclips, or read a book about the Mayans. If you get your history from Hollywood.... well, let's just say, that's not the best place. that said, yes, it was a lot of fun.
Mel Gibson is a GENIUS.... I have watched this movie countless times and I am still moved by the whole production.... This has to be one of the greatest movies ever.
One of Mel Gibson's greatest movie of all time. We should all not also forget to give credit to all those people involve in the production of this masterpiece.👏👏👏
Just watched this again tonight and convinced my wife to watch it ! She loved it and the only thing better than watching a great movie is watching it again with someone who hasn’t seen it !
This movie is the best of the best. The first time when I watched it I remember covering my eyes because it looked so real. I screamed because I was so scared as if it was me in the movie. I really loved it. Thank you all of you for putting a lot of effort to make such an awesome movie!!!!!
I hope Disney is taking notes after all the garbage they and Hollywood have been putting out lately, Mell is a true genius, and I am very grateful to still have this guy still around and looking forward to his next movie.
I saw it in theater when it came out. Me and my friends went to the cinema and this one was the only movie that had a few tickets left. We had no knowledge of the movie beforehand. We sat in the front row looking up at this gigantic screen from very close and you couldn't see anything else. It was a stunning and immersive experience. On of the best cinema-experienced ever.
I can't help but to feel mesmerised by this movie. It takes you into it, like you're living it and filling the shoes of every character in focus. The contrast between the beauty of nature against the brutality of survival and humanity, every minute detail that goes into the production, the stellar performance by the cast, the atmosphere, the pacing... You just can't help but get sucked right into the story. It's been 16 years, and still this movie takes the first place as my top favourite movie of all time.
I was scared as hell when they were at the ceremonial table and just after they executed one of the prisoners, the guy with the ceremonial mask turns to look at the main character like "you are next!"...I felt like he was looking at me and I felt so small and powerless, I forgot I was watching a movie and became one of the prisoners! Excellent movie from Mel and all his team, Bravo!
Yeah in Hollywood telling the truth is a bad patch that got Mel so much hate from former waiters, but Weinstein was a righteous guy for the same no talent crowd…
I can't believe it took me so long to watch this masterpiece. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Rudy Youngblood (Jaguar Paw) was BRILLIANT. He held the screen so well. And major props to all the actors - they truly committed to their roles and this captivating storyline. Sheesh, what a movie. Well done, Mel.
I can’t fathom how much I love this movie I watched it when I was a little kid and did not comprehend it much and now years later I can’t appreciate how much passion and dedication they put into this work of art!!! 🙏❤️❤️❤️
From the moment I saw this film it has been my all time favorite, nothing can surpass. I watch it several times a year. My utmost thanks to Mel and everyone who participated in its production.
This movie scared the crap out me when I first saw it long ago. I remember being absolutely riveted by the intensity and rawness of the story. And it does a great job of bringing you into that world.
This is one of my all time favourite films, it was absolutely breathtaking . I never get bored of watching , ive seen it more than 20 times.Mel Gibson created something Completely awe inspiring , Simply a masterpiece!

Apocalypto is a masterpiece and I was very disappointed Hollywood politics got in the way and deprived Gibson and his team of the recognition they so deserved for this.
Easy, because they put the anti-Semite label on him.
Pretty epic that he did it from outside of the establishment though
Hollywood is not a place for movie lovers. It's an Elite club where you need to suck up to get an award
Hope the same team are not just being used lol hope they are rich by now 😂
I love Mel Gibson and all his films he's a very good And talented man I saw the hearts too awesome
S she is resting in peace.. God blessed her❤
your comment looks very good !
Did you watch it with subtitles or voice dub?
I loved the MAD MAX feeling of this movie, and all the detail of the great actors and director.
This movie was an absolute visual masterpiece! Each and every actor was Oscar worthy performance
and yet never won any oscars, with only 3 nomination. A truly underrated film.
One of the first american movie I saw, I was amazed by the production quality.
American production, but not a American film.
This is about the Mayan Culture a civilization from Central America.
You should watch “The Matrix”!
Especially before the 4th film in the series is released.
Прошу снять фильм о Манасе в Кыргызстане,из величайших эпосов Востока
the barbary in this movie is shocking

Mel Gibson is so much better than all of Hollywood. He is truly a great director
Why he never got a Oscar for this is beyond belief.
Who needs an oscar when you have this masterpiece?
Apocalypto is a masterpiece of film making. Brilliantly done, amazing cast and support actors. I am puzzled why few talk about it now in the early 21st Century. Gibson seems like an amazing energetic manic director with crativity and vision few have ever possess. I rate this film in my list of the ten top eye-popping movies ever produced.
Same here. It is a masterpiece
Maybe it's just because in some scenes of the movie..it's too Savage.. although the story needs such scenes, some don't have the guts to watch removing of organ in such a way..even it should be rated to 18 and above, because some parts are really disturbing.
This film is just beyond incredible!
I was worried the film wouldn’t represent my recent struggle either but it did.
I remember when it first came out, my eyes never left the screen from start to finish, masterful storytelling that will be appreciated far into the future.
this movie never gets old, I don't remember how many times I've watched it already. superbo!
Let this miracle happen again
why say ur a indian tho
Im a native
@@Blakeskate55 to assert the fact that the movie indeed has moved a lot of people from corners of the world

Movies like this are made only once. Unbelievably worked so hard. It’s a masterpiece.
Our movie MM also❤❤❤will be made once only
Hands down one of the best movie I have ever seen!
They really need to finance more of his films because everything he directs is gold - Braveheart, The Passion, Apocalypto, Hacksaw Ridge.
Absolutely. Puts the trash hollywood spots out to shame.
This has to be the most ambitious movie ever produced. It's not just a "good movie", it inspires awe. This is the apex of cinema as an art form.
Masterpiece of a film form a Genius filmmaker. This is one of those cinematic gems that generations will always discover and love, it is a timeless story and amazing civilisation it shows us. Thank you Mel.
If you haven’t seen this movie yet, you’ve missed a well done and spectacular movie! Gibson does not make anything but great movies.
This is far greater than a masterpiece...it's breathtakingly authentic
It's close to being authentic but there's a few puzzling decisions that were made that could have easily been changed to make it more authentic.
Well, they put 110% in that for sure.
who needs Oscar winning actors when you have Mel Gibson as a director.. 👏👏 A movie of its own kind! 😊
Mel Gibson is a GENIUS.... I have watched this movie countless times and I am still moved by the whole production.... This has to be one of the greatest movies ever.
Me too... ❤❤
I love putting people on this movie and seeing their reactions!
This isn't just a movie about the past, it's a time machine. A superb work of art. Bravo!
One of the best movies I have ever watched.
One of the most underrated movies of all time.
we need another movie like this.... a true work of art
Wow, how incredible. This is a movie worth viewing over and over again. The raw emotions, everything moves you.
It is mesmerising, you just sit there fully zoned in and taking it all in.It does it every time I watch it. One of the best films of all time.
An achievement unparalleled in its Beauty, drama and action. One of the best films ever and an enduring testament to Gibson’s vision and talent.
Mel Gibson has had some bad patches in life, as has we all. But you can't deny that he's a brilliant actor and director.
Say what you want about him, but that son of a bitch knows story structure.
bad patches? like what? some very true comments about a certain tribe?
Yeah in Hollywood telling the truth is a bad patch that got Mel so much hate from former waiters, but Weinstein was a righteous guy for the same no talent crowd…
They slandered him, and still do, because he told the TRUTH.
Talk for him only good he is genius.
Well done, Mel.
one of the most well made film... its will always be in my collection
❤️
Same
This movie scared the crap out me when I first saw it long ago. I remember being absolutely riveted by the intensity and rawness of the story. And it does a great job of bringing you into that world.
I was thinking the same thing I could not keep my eyes open i always close my eyes and just listened i almost pee on my pans lol
This is one of my all time favourite films, it was absolutely breathtaking . I never get bored of watching , ive seen it more than 20 times.Mel Gibson created something Completely awe inspiring , Simply a masterpiece!
For start Im sure mel and those cast members use translator throughout the shoot for these amazing craft
One of my very favorite films. I watch it often. I always pick up on something I hadn’t before. Mel and everyone super amazing job.
This is literally in my top 5 best movies I've ever watched. I loved this so much.
For me one of the best 10 films ever made. A masterpiece. i will never understand why they got no Oscar for makeup and costumes.
Because the Oscar’s are a fraud
Mel Gibson was basically black listed at this point, that's why.
what are the other 9?
Can I see your list of ten best , it's in mine too?
which the other 9 ? yes this was super
Masterpiece in every aspect
Pure genius. I would love watching more movies made by Gibson and his uniquely skilled and gifted team.
It really makes you appreciate the attention of detail that goes into making a film.
Not just a movie,
It's a masterpiece ❤️
This is not just a film, it is a brocken time machine, as it drives me to the further era that I never tought at all. ❤
One of my first college courses was a class about ancient Americas civilizations. This movie has the mayas spot on
The timeline?
This is one of the most underrated movies that really needed part 2
Agreed. A second part is demanded for this historical tour de force. It begs to continue the fate of the Mayans following the Spanish invasion.
Underrated Yes. In need of a sequel.. Fukk no
I don't think this movie was underrated
No, no, no sequel.. just make another good movies..
