My mother’s family were from Grundy, Virginia and they all sang this way and greeted each other with hugs and handshakes every church day. They were the most loving, accepting, non judgmental people I’ve ever known.

    Thanks for this.
The singing to me is beautiful.
Reminds me of goung to Grandview Baptist Church in Hardin County KY.

I was an Old Baptist outdoor service in Pikeville, KY about 15 years ago. During the singing, I could feel something move inside me that tied me to the generations of family long before me.

Probably the congregation my Great Grandma attended. She was Primitive Baptist and lived/died in Pikeville!

This makes me cry with nostalgia & love. My grandparents were Primitive Baptists & I fondly remember June meetings. They attended Tumbling Creek Primitive Baptist Church in SW Virginia Between Saltville & Meadowview

The Louisa Primitve Babptest Church Is Located on Rocky Road about 14 miles south east of Pikeville, KY near Fishtrap Lake. The caption locates it at Louisa, KY. Traditionaly we pronounce it "Lou-I'-sa". I don't know who recorded this but it looks like it's lead by Robbie W. and it features my brother Gary, my cousen Todd, and several other familiar faces.

I grew up on stories about hard-shell Baptists in Pikeville, from my grandmother, who grew up there and went to church there. I have been in many places since, but I am still a hard-shell Baptist and love that way of singing, one of my earliest memories from 70 years ago.

This is the only one I can find that reminds me of how my mother loved it. It made her cry so hard she couldn't breath when she heard it because it reminded her of people she'd lost over the years, but only when it's sung like this! I miss her every day and listening to this, I can cry and remember her. Her Mamma and Daddy were Primitive Baptist growing up but then she and her sister turned to Missionary Baptists years later. They lived and grew up in Tenn and hearing it like this, is just how I needed. Thank you for posting. :/

Enjoyed the singing. My grandmother Earl Owens was a member of the Cannonsburg, KY Primitive Baptist Church. I used to visit there a lot when I was a child. I'd love to connect with you if you ever knew my grandmother. She was very special. I miss her dearly. Blessings to all of you!

+Pam Owens-Orgeron Mom and I were just watching Cumberland Highlanders a show on RFD TV. It's a bluegrass show recorded on Jerusalem Ridge which is Ralph Stanly's farm in eastern KY. The episode I recorded and was watching included the song Amazing Grace being lined. I got on here to see if I could find some songs being lined and low and behold who do I find making a comment but my cousin Pam Owens-Orgeron! Love you cuz!

+Bryan Sturgill --Hi Bryan, yes, Milton had never heard songs lined before. I found this one as an example to let him hear. It's a small world! Obviously, you, your mom, and I share similar tastes in music. Take care! Love you too cuz!!!

This was the most traumatic part of any funeral that I ever went to in Eastern Kentucky. When my mother passed and wanted to be buried in the family plot, my sister and I made sure this non-sense did not happen at her funeral.
