“Davis became embroiled in a new, more serious controversy when several weapons registered in her name were used in an attempted prisoner escape in a San Rafael, California, courtroom on August 7, 1970. Political activist Jonathan Jackson stormed the courtroom armed with a rifle and pistols, handed pistols to three black prisoners at the courthouse, and demanded the release of the Soledad Brothers, including his brother George Jackson, who was romantically involved with Davis. As the armed men attempted to leave with hostages, shots were fired. In the subsequent shootout between the men, police officers, and prison guards, four people, including a judge, were killed and four individuals were injured.
Davis owned two of the pistols that Jackson used. She had legally purchased them in 1968 and 1969 and had purchased the shotgun that was used to kill the judge two days before the courthouse gun battle. The guns had come from a collection of weapons that the Che-Lumumba Club used for target practice and were available to any member. Newspapers and magazines had a field day publicizing her ownership of the weapons. The Marin County attorney general initially held the position that Davis bore no fault in the crimes unless it could be proven that Davis had given the guns to Jackson with the intent that they be used to commit a crime, but he reversed that decision after the storm of publicity. On August 15, 1970, California authorities issued a warrant for Davis’s arrest on the grounds that she had aided in the crime. She faced charges of murder and kidnapping, but other than ownership of the guns, there was no proof that Davis was involved in the attack. She did not issue any comments about the situation, and the police were unable to locate her. Accordingly, a federal warrant was issued, and Davis became only the third woman to date to appear on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list.
Within a few weeks, Davis was captured in New York City, which she believed was a safe place for a black person to be arrested. Denied bail and returned to California, Davis spent 16 months in jail before her acquittal in 1972. A massive “Free Angela Davis” campaign turned her into an internationally known figure.” -Encyclopedia of Alabama

Angela Davis has always been an inspiration of mine when it comes to human/civil rights and the awareness of the injustices that capitalism thrives on. I began reading her book “Women, Race, & Class” (copyright 1981) and discovered her analogies of the black women slaves as referred to as breeders and their “young taken as calves from the cow.” And that’s what led me here. I’ve been studying Miss Davis for quite a few years now and I couldn’t be more elated to discover that she “practices what she preaches” so to speak when it comes to the oppression of all living beings. As another commenter stated, as if I needed another reason to love and respect this woman more than I already have. Thank you Miss Davis. I’m sure you would agree this is the bare minimum. Brilliant, and sadly really crucial that this comes from Davis herself. Within modern/contemporary Civil Rights Movement and Minority Activism it is often alleged (check your privilege etc) that the suffering of non-human beings is less important and therefore we should not consider it at all until we have managed to stop all human exploitation and suffering. When really, it would seem to me anyway, that if we could stop torturing and abusing animals, we might learn of a more universal empathy and how to show more love and compassion to our fellow brothers and sisters as well.

Plants have feelings too. If you can't see that anything you eat has to die to give you life and suffer in the process than by all means increase your sensitivities. More animals and critters are killed for vegetables than meat. All lives count! For me 85% of my food is vegetables and the rest meat, and I don't eat anything out of a box. Food is a story. When I eat deer, I eat that story of Texas hillcountry and he gentle ways a deer dances around the land as its savvy senses play melodies with the plants. When I eat okras, I eat an interstellar transmitter by where spaceships are the okras and the seeds passengers. What story do you put in your body? And thank you for nourishing yourself as best as you can.

eating animals, for us, is just simple the circle of life. although food and capitalism don't mix, which can be proven by the affordability of food, food desserts, starvation anddepression of the quality of food in the last hundred years, human beings are omnivores. the only reason i see for going vegan is just to boycott the capitalistic food system, especially if you can't afford humanly raised, grassfed beef or other.

    • @diaryofasheep

the "circle of life"? do you think the zebra lays down its life for the lion because of the 'circle of life'? before you use that term as some means of justification for our needlessly taking the lives of trillions of animals, rethink it. and human bodies, unlike lions, don't need animal products to survive.
you really don't see ANY other reason for going vegan? not for the sake of causing less suffering to other sentient animals? not for any of the other reasons Angela Davis points out here? and, on top of that, you want to point the finger at capitalism as the culprit then you turn around and talk about 'humanely raised'. you don't think capitalism had anything to do with the marketing term 'humanely raised' that you are endorsing?
