I love Riptide as a bot because its just such a menacing weapon - Reminiscent of how Tombstone would just obliterate robots - But where Ray Billings geniunely enjoys the sport and loves to ''tease'' in a respectful way, i never have that feeling with Team Riptide. Its cockyness every single time. Truth be told, they are allowed to be a little cocky - Their robot is intensely powerful so a competitor has to find a way to beat them. But their cockyness goes beyond highlighting that you are great - It borders on arrogance. And i think that's unjustified, every single time.
I think people said this about End Game's team as well, and tbh...I'm not sure if I noticed it compared to Ethan and Team Riptide. xD And after all the RT controversy, I did some looking up of other "villains" as well, such as Ray and Jake, and if people saw them being kind out of battle, y'know what? That's good enough for me. And if Ray himself mentioned the honor rule, where if one wants to avoid taking more damage, they can tell the other team and they'll back off - I'll take that as well. I've never seen BB fights in person (would love to, but alas, I can't afford it right now), but if I did, I'd much rather see EG, TS, or Hydra over freaking Riptide any time. Of course, I'd be there for SubZero or Ripperoni (or other faves of mine), but hey~ :P
Riptide goes beyond cocky they are arrogant not in the way teams like hypershock and others they are arrogant and they get upset and cry foul when they lose like in the witch doctor fight or the whyatchi fight or the two that were most impressive the fights with broco and the sawblaze or can't forget the utter annihilation from bloodsport they claimed they were hit after the buzzer but if you watch they had gone in for a shot after the buzzer during the hypershock when they were called out on it they claimed it was payback for an illegal after fight hit I enjoy when they get beat
"Modifying the robot after making weight is against the rules" whether or not it was to their advantage they broke the rules. At this point I'm disappointed in the organization for doing nothing more than giving them a stem talking to. This needs to be addressed in the rules next year and actual punishments/penalties need to be given like in any other sport if BattleBots is ever going to be taken seriously otherwise they are just inviting teams to cheat.
If it was really a broken rule they would have been removed. Proving it is all fake for views. Hydra isn't the villans anymore so they need a new villan team
@@dellaraewhat evidence of any kind do you have to back this up? Because there's a mountain of evidence that you're just wrong, namely from every bot builder (who, I remind you can barely hande the post fight interviews and are certainly not actors) who've talked about the season's controversies and the showrunners who are fed up with talking about this stuff. I've no doubt that the post-production crew ramped up the controversy because it's juicy but to say it's staged with no evidence is cringe.
That weapon is a fantastic design. By making it wider and adding mass along its axis, but shorter than other vertical spinners from tip to axis, it increases torque without increasing tip speed. It also makes it easier to land hits because the striking area is so large. Combined that with a durable, low-profile chassis with enclosed wheels, and it's akin to military-focused engineering. May not be a likable team but that machine is on another competitive level. Hammer style bots - the whole weapon concept is relatively ineffective and non-competitive imho.
Yeah but they also stole the design wholesale. Lynx is a dominant 3lb beetleweight, and apparently they even copied the design to the point at which there were holes in the bot specific to the evolution of Lynx that got copied to Riptide that had no reason to be there apart from the fact that they existed on older designs of Lynx. I'm not a fan. I don't like his and the team's attitude. See the fight against Captain Sherdderator.
@@elemkay5104 "Apparently" almost always translates to "I have no evidence but I heard it somewhere." Also the Riptide ppl had a 3lb that competed with Lynx in the early days of NHRL.
@@UnpatternedGarbageRiptide itself is mostly just an upscaled Rival with a ton of alterations made for the heavyweight scale, but Rival is an entirely unapologetic Lynx clone. Not that that's necessarily bad - what is bad is not giving credit (and also the team behind Riptide in general). The reason half of all beetlweights are 4wd eggbeater verts is because they're Lynx clones; the main difference is that Rival was more or less a 1:1 clone.
Ignoring the controversy, this fight was insane. Shatter survived longer than black dragon or mad catter. Riptide hit harder than pretty much any other bot, they would be so entertaining if they didn't.... Well, I'll just leave it at that. Overall this episode was definitely a good one, every fight was action packed and deserved to be fight of the week.
i'd like to see what carbide and tombstone have to say about that "harder than any other bot". in fact Ray has a new bot now (forgot the name), but its similar to tombstone, looks more durable and they won their first test fight. can't wait to see it in action!
@@SethiozProject Pretty sure you're thinking of Mortician, which is just middleweight Tombstone. It made its debut at this year's Robogames. Whether its upgrades will transfer to its heavyweight cousin remains to be seen, Tombstone was already redesigned for 2021.
Even I could see from the lousy camera angle that they were taping a stage prop on Riptide. Adam knew it too, but he chose to stir up trouble. He and his team were scared. Terrified. And they had every reason to be. Buh-bye Adam.
@@bryansummers3219 The rules are pretty clear you aren't allowed to work on the bot after weigh-in. In literally every other sport once your machine has been inspected you aren't allowed to work on it anymore, and BattleBots is supposed to be the same way. If they were just putting on some pre-fight decorations then they should have cleared that with production instead of doing it in a dark hallway right before the fight.
I wouldn't say cheating, but Riptide could've handled it better than trying to victimize himself (Ethan) and saying something dumb about Adam. Ethan is probably the most unlikable person in the BB field.
The rules say you can't work on your robot after weigh in, but it was 2 pounds lighter so obviously they modified it so that is cheating lol, people love to make excuses for cheaters
The consensus I've seen is his fellow Battlebots teams think Ethan is immature. Why else would he make a scene during the post fight interview instead of just talking to Adam privately?
Let's all read "The Rules" together before making unfounded accusations, shall we? BattleBots Tournament Rules - 5.6.4 Pre-Match Inspection - - - - Prior to its Match, a Robot will be tested for functionality and also weighed to confirm compliance with the regulations. Once the Pre-Match Inspection of a Robot starts, no changes are allowed to be made the Robot that involve the ADDITION of any parts that affect the weight or functionality of a Robot. REMOVAL of parts MAY BE ALLOWED.
@@Garfie489 They weighed in two pounds lighter, so there's no evidence they added anything. Officials inspected the bot three times and found no evidence of cheating. The BB producers are just creating fake drama for ratings. Don't be so easily manipulated by a TV show, kiddo.
@@fortheclip3098 may means they need to ask permission. Doing it without permission is still a breach as it may not be allowed. Just because something may be allowed, it doesnt mean by default you are. On a plane you may remove your seatbelt after takeoff - you are not required to do so however.
@@Garfie489 It sounds like you're interpreting that rule to fit your narrative. If the rule the guy stated was taken straight out of the book, there isn't any mention of permission.
Shatters hammer( and the bot) is actually so durable now, they shoved the hammer into riptides weapon quite a few times and it didnt break, in previous seasons the hammer got decapitated by WD and Malice( I think)
Same here it doesnt reflect well on the sport when everyone looks like a bunch of spoilt little drama queens and team whyachi confirmed that the battlebox actually uses sound to monitor tip speed rule compliance so yeah I think it's at least mostly just manufactured outrage. All the same we don't need it.
I don’t know if he cheated. But that was still pretty shady. They knowingly broke the rules which made the bot lighter. And refused to say what they did to make it lighter.
What's the margin of error on that scale? A scale that weights objects weighing hundreds of pounds is probably not accurate up to one pound. It's the producers editing the show to make Riptide the bad guys. All that controversy gets people to talk about the show, it drives up the number of views and comments.
But are you sure they actually made it lighter? They're using industrial scales to weigh 250-300 pound bots. What do you want to bet that the scale has a 1-2% margin of error, which at 200+ pounds is 2 pounds +/-. These aren't state certified food or chemistry scales, where you need to be gram or microgram precise.
@@TheRocco96 I don’t know the exact model, but generally rice lake floor scales are accurate to 1 pound for every 5000. So for a 250 pound robot the margin of error is 1/20th a pound
The drama wasn’t handled very well, but these guys all put in a lot of work for a three-minute match and that’s got to warp your perceptions. Teams who have been in this sport a long time know how to take the good with the bad and move on. Hopefully both teams will mature moving forward.
Regardless of the reasons, the rules are there for a reason and they definitely did *something* to their bot - the fact that its weight changed absolutely proves that. If it was fair and above board, they would have just explained what they did rather than tried blaming the scales or making excuses. Weather it actually helped or not is beside the point - the rules are clearly stated and the other team had every right to request checks on the bot. The entire thing was shady as anything - if it was just some decoration it would have *gained* weight.
Multiple teams including End Game, HyperShock and Skorpios have said the scales are wildly inconsistent. They said even the AC and placement can affect the reading. Imagine the axe is similar to adding pool noodles to block the weapon. Because it won't be on the bot during the fight there is no foul.
Imagine being one of the best bots around but owned and driven by the shttiest team in Battlebots history. I feel bad for Riptide (the bot). The bot is great but owned by a shtty team
At the end of the day battlebots is a TV show and entertainment product. They need villains like Hydra, Tombstone, and Riptide to give the show exciting ups and downs, rivalries and revenge stories. I would not be surprised in the least if the producers encouraged the people inclined to be villains to be even more overt.
@@robertallen2366 totally stole the design. They are unapologetic villains. Keep in mind that lots of people apply to battlebots and the produces want some mean teams.
@@jonsmith6331 Ray and Jake are great people. They only act like a villain on camera. Team Riptide is just disrespectful. If I put it into words, "Ray and Jake are great villains with redeeming qualities. Team Riptide is a bad villain without any redeeming qualities"
Wow Riptide just didn't let up! Pretty slick driving to be right on their heels after all the throws! Epic Match. Almost a juggling act. Not sure how that goes down with the rules but it was fun to see. Here's hoping Shatter makes a comeback for a revenge rematch sometime.
yup .. and that's what wins matches -- control over your bot! .. which shatter did NOT have. at least twice they were just spinning around and turning their side and took a hit. i get its hard to re-gain control after being hit, but they had few good chances to get a hit on riptide, but they just spun around, while riptide was in control of their own bot. its enjoyable to watch battles where at least one driver is in control of their bot.
Honestly the vibe I had from the intro was that they weren't going to back off for a KO at any point, and I was kind of surprised they did while any part of Shatter was operational Not necessarily good sportsmanship, but I don't think you really expect that from Riptide, and they were clearly offended; I thought they'd try to turn shatter into shrapnel.
@TriVos Ahren it’s not cheating. If the scales were off, which other teams have experienced, then they removed a part. Removing parts іs allowed. Adding parts that add weight or functionality isn’t. Read the actual rules before you complain.
@@Pseudoscience-is-a-scam they were taping their crow bar to the weapon to make an entrance of riptide being a hammer bot to then take off before the fight, an antic like many bots do. BB way over hyped it into a controversy
@@sevenofzach That's because Ray was playing a character so pretty easy to carry yourself well when you just playing the bad guy for the camera's easy to know to turn it off on on. As opposed to Ethan who is just legit unlikable and isn't playing any sort of character he's like this regardless if the camera is on him or not.
Regarding the weigh-in before and after. The initial weigh-in was performed off-camera. Was the bot's first weigh-in done WITH the safety bar still installed? The second weigh-in was performed with the safety bar removed as evident at the 0:24 mark. That safety bar could very well be the 2 lb. difference if the safety bar was still installed on the initial weigh-in.
Didn't see if they showed it in this video (mostly came to check out the comments) but when I watched it on amazon the bald dude on team Riptide stated to a member of team shatter "We made it lighter" without addressing what they actually did during the second weigh-in after the team shatter member asked what was up. So as far as I can tell, Riptide is just salty they got caught and doesn't want to acknowledge they did anything.
@creativelybankrupt7237 i was thinking several things, including this comment that you had stated. But I can not make any judgments without knowing the full story. At this time, we only have bits and pieces which don't make up the full picture. I'm not denying that there's anything fishy going on. But, I for one, cannot jump to conclusions without knowing the full story.
@@Soujourn_Sylvainthe rules actually allow for the ability to remove thing, just not add after weigh in, I think it needs to be approved, but removing things isn't in itself necessarily a violation like adding.
I have also had high hopes for the omni-wheels with their omni-directional movement but they have obvious flaws over standard tires such as trading movement flexibility for Torque and sloppy movement. Seems every omni-wheel bot is moving like they are on an ice field with sloppy turns with oversteers or slow start from 0. Forget winning a pushing match with them. That said they are still pretty new and can be refined to knock out the problems.
The one thing Triple Crown did right was use swerve drive. It allows the same range of motion as omniwheels with the power and traction of normal wheels. It’s already been shown to be effective in small weight classes with bots like Aren Hill’s Shifty.
I mean, in a sport as notoriously congenial as Battlebots, getting to the point of refusing after match handshakes is notable no matter how you spin it.
Ethan is not very smart, it will come back to bite him eventually. Confidence is one thing, cockiness and mocking is another. Good piece of humble pie is coming his way.
If hes not very smart I am sure another team will eventually build a bot that can stop them. Until then if Ethan isn't smart it just makes everyone that loses to him look even worse :)
If I were acused of being a cheater in the sport I love in front of the whole world you can bet that team Shater would hear A LOT more. If they accused them of cheating instead of handling with maturity and NO PARANOIA they should also say sorry for the accusation, not sorry for asking to have riptide checked. Very easy to throw suspicion in others and then not even having to say sorry when proven wrong
sorry but that Adam guy seems like a right ar*sehole, all Ethan did was call them out for the constant reweighing and delays to the fight because of Adams paranoia, and then still gets destroyed like it was nothing xD
love how everyone is mad that Riptide team is being arrogant and proud of their bot and their design, they are allowed to be. It's a game show about destruction, the goal is to destroy, take the loss with pride as well and move on my friend.
Accidentally liked after previously liking, lol. But I agree. They really need to learn how this just turns a robot combat show into another Jerry Springer... Don't need that.
Yeah it’s always sad to see poor sportsmanship. If the rule is you can’t modify after inspection, and you’re seen working on the bot, it’s not paranoia to want it checked.
Don't want to be called out for violating the rules? Don't violate the rules. Working on your bot after weigh in is not allowed and that 2 pounds missing means something was modified.
Hope it's Riptide and Minotar in the finals for the Big Nut.. my two favorite bots going to war. Wish the the Championship match was battle to the death instead of 3 minutes though.. Battle Bots should do that.
I haven't seen enough comments stating this, so I'll add one to the pool: Team Riptide was duct-taping a gag "hammer" to their weapon as a joke for the walk-out (think of the other times a robot has walked out "wearing a hat," etc.) when Team Shatter! spotted them. Apparently, Team Riptide's reputation as the "villains" led Team Shatter! to suspect they were cheating, but they were just adding a decoration. (You can actually see the hammer in the shot at the beginning.) BattleBots, of course, leapt at the opportunity to bolster Riptide's "villain" persona so viewers would root against them and, thus, keep watching the season in hopes of seeing them lose, so they omitted that critical detail. And the scale read only slightly differently because, as we all know, scales are not perfectly precise (although frankly, if making weight is an enforceable requirement, those scales should be accurate to at least a tenth of a pound).
2 pounds different on a digital scale is not "slightly" different. 🤣 "as we all know, scales are not perfectly precise" - Correct, but there's a difference between accurate and consistent.
The problem wasn’t the modifications they were making, it was that they were being so secretive about them. However, it’s impossible to prove that they were just adding a hammer to the robot, just as it’s impossible to prove they had been making an illegal modification. Maybe they really were adding a hammer, but they might have been making a modification too. There’s not enough evidence to confirm or deny their alibi, just as we can’t as of now confirm or deny their guilt. Ultimately though this whole thing could have been avoided if Riptide had just gotten permission from someone, but yes, Battlebots is definitely trying to stir up controversy here
@@grapploct2796 I can't prove they were adding it, but if you watch them wheel the bot out, they are very clearly holding a crowbar with a pickaxe head alongside the handle. Of cause the weigh in does not include any physical safety mechanism, and it should be the weight as the bot going into the fight. Most of the pits are in a same building so what happens in your pit are visibale to other teams. In the first footage they were not even in the pit but in the waiting queue to the fight.
Shot of the fight is when rip tide shot shatter in the air and then they caught it with the hammer and slammed it back down to the floor ... perfect timing and amazing shot.
No they weren’t! Rules say that you can remove parts after weigh in. 0:32 We can’t deny the possibility of Riptide crew removing parts from the bot that resulted in the weight loss for Riptide.

Removal of parts may be allowed. The functionality can still be affected. Either way competitors and staff can request re weighting.
Controversy not withstanding, this was a better fight between the two bots. It was still very one sided, but Shatter was very durable here until it wasn't. Riptide is such a scary bot this year.

Got a loooong comment here, but I'll try to keep it brief. First: There IS a rumored penalty in the works for those who show poor sportsmanship in season 8 according to the BB Wiki. I'm sure Riptide is the sole reason, but then again, this has been happening for a while now, so it's ABOUT FREAKING TIME something popped up about this. PLEASE be sure this is enforced evenly as well! And before anyone comes in and says "it's robot combat, there should be carnage!", yes, there should be. But no one should be going overkill mode OR saying things like Ethan says. They're on air, they should be presenting themselves in their BEST way. Imo, Ethan and his team are representing themselves as the biggest jerks on BB, and even Ray Billings mentioned an honor role - if the opponent wants to avoid any more damage, they can inform the other team and they'll let a countdown begin. Second: Team Riptide literally mentioned altering the Bot after being accepted. That's breaking the rules if it's as "illegal" as it was just said. Of course, while I wasn't there, I can't prove anything, but if you really can't alter anything after being weighed in and given the go, WHY THE HECK did they say that they did just that and got to go in anyway?? Third: I am in agreement with the offered handshake not being genuine. Plus after Ethan flat out insulted them out of battle, I wouldn't shake his hand either. I was honestly waiting for someone to deny him because he's the one who says "I'm sorry it won't happen again", smirks at you, and does something else that's just as bad to someone else. I don't think Ethan or his team really care about being good sports. And for the record, I am also ND (high functioning autism), so I can somewhat relate to Ethan in the mental department, BUT I was taught how to behave around people, and it sounds like this guy just has his daddy making excuses (and supposedly lying about "curing" his autism). Even though it was said later that they supposedly made up, I just can't trust Ethan or team Riptide at all. Jake, hand your trophy over now. :P We already know Darth Ethan is the real BB Villain. Fourth: I will also echo others when they say "it's not the Bot, it's the pilot (or team)". Riptide (the Bot) is great! Strong, durable, all that good stuff (I can't say for certain if it's a ripoff of MadCatter's Lynx; I see a ton of similar designs so can only take that with a grain of salt). The TEAM, on the other hand, is a bunch of jerks. Although I did hear that one of them did go see Team Shrederator after that fight, gave a (supposedly) genuine apology, and HELPED them repair. But all in all, I feel like the team is just super toxic and it could be because of them people see BB as a laughingstock sport, more of a robot/human soap opera with tons of drama, where there just needs to be robot combat and the teams acting like someone with BRAINS. There are (and WERE) many rookie teams who showed real sportsmanship, and even though they lost, they left a huge impact on the sport, and that's great! It just comes to show you that you don't have to have a powerful Bot to be good, just have an attitude that doesn't equal that of a snake's venom! You're representing not only yourself, but in a way, the show, when you come on the stage, and if everyone was just a bunch of Ethan Kurtz-es...Yeah...That wouldn't look so good, would it? Again, the BOTS are not doing wrong, it's the PEOPLE who are. Just like dogs; The dogs are just being dogs. It's the owner who has to train it to behave right. If you can't do that, you shouldn't have a dog. If you can't behave like a person with a brain out of battle, you shouldn't join BattleBots.
I agree with everything but the villlian award being passed on: It's not actually a villian award, its a heel award. Ray and Jake aren't bad people. They're both really chill and agreeable off screen but they try to play up a character for the show/TV, while still knowing their limits and being respectful to other competitors off camera, and show sportsmanship. Ethan/ Team Break32 does not fit this criteria
TS would need to improve their spin up time a lot. RT would box rush them weapon to weapon, flip them, and then pick off both tires in no time. TS won't be strong as long as the upper deck is constraining the box size. They ping pong around too much, and can't evade well while they spin up.
this is funny how people complain about riptide cockiness while in the end it's the other team that was unsportmanlike, you call them cheater, they called you paranoid and destroy your bot, i think the trade is fair, get over it.
Oh boy, after that great speech from Marco from Minotaur last week at the end of the last episode, THIS happens which really ruins and undermines his speech.
b. Weight Exclusions Safety covers and restraints do not count towards the weight of your bot. If you (or BattleBots) install one or two small cameras on your bot, the weight of such cameras will not count towards the weight limit of your bot. If BattleBots installs a telemetry package into your bot, the weight of the telemetry package will not count towards the weight limit of your bot
Recently Riptide came out saying that they were duct taping a crowbar to the weapon to make it look like a hammer bot, you can even see one of them on the left holding thee duct tape during the footage. Not saying Riptides team doesn't have its fair share of problems, but I am saying that im more dissapointed in Battlebots as this seems more like battlebots attempting to stir up some drama for the sake of views and attention. Lately in the past couple of seasons, Battlebots has been a bit more "Reality show" like and personally I'm not a massive fan of it, not judging if you like it more that way as its just my taste and for all I know I may be in the minority on this one, but I just wish battlebots could steer a bit away from that aspect and maybe focus more on the process of building, repairing, and preparing for fights rather than focus on the drama going on behind the scenes (Or even just make a series for the behind the scenes drama and whatnot). Sorry about this weird rant. I'm not trying to start any fights or argue about this (because there already is enough of that) I just wanted to share my opinion.
yeah absolutely, the real villian is starting to show as the production team that made this a controversy and like a mystery why they were cheating, when both of the scales they use do not always weight the same
@@jacobe1942 I absolutely agreee, it all feels so staged to just pump out drama and conflict. Having Riptidde fight Madcatter, not releasing what really happened during the Riptide Vs Shatter fiasco, and even having the first post episode bot-opsy be with shatter to give them a platform to talk about it more. To be honest jackpot was much more heavily damaged and they even stated that the most damaged bot would be included in the bot-opsy.
@@davetheduck9115 yeah something is wrong when Riptide is the bad guy but its seeminly ok for all these rumors to spread by other bot teams with no substance to them that caused team shatter to think they were cheating. In this instance all they were doing was taping a crow bar (that allegedly some of the production knew about and were even doing it in the presence of production people as seen in the video) right before their entrance to do some of those intimidating things many bots do to provoke the other team. And yeah.... using Shatter to then get to talk about it, but not let Riptide defend itself is shady, as Ethan said they were put to retest thier bot 3x~! to look for possible cheats, and with the variability of the scales had the error gone the other way likely would have DQ's them.... so Ethan kind of was right in saying not even these accusations can stop them.
Watch the slomo at the end of the fight careful, the weapon does not even slows down on a direct hit. Beside the manor of the team, the bot is engineerd very well.
Some people were speculating that the removed part could have been from the weapon, to let it exceed the maximum tip speed allowed by the rulebook and make the weapon more powerful than it should be. That turned out to not be the case because Riptide still passed tip speed tests after the fight, but it's still something that could theoretically be done to cheat with a post-inspection modification.
Yes, it would. RT literally adds or removes bolts to hit 250 exactly at weigh-in. They just used a different scale at weigh-in, and that one is known to read 1-2 lbs lighter.
I don't care much for either team. The Wrigley's talk smack then turn into pissy little "Bs" when things don't go their way. The Riptide team drips with arrogance. That said, Riptide (as a bot) is wickedly brutal! I love the bot, not so much the attitude of the team. As far as the drama goes... there was nothing that Riptide could have done post inspection to change that outcome.
Trust me... I really enjoy that part. The bot get flip up into it and the Pulvervizer bring it down and it never stop work. 😅. This match was very entertaining.
Wait....so they cant modify their robots? So what did Ghost Raptor do when fighting Icewave? Or other teams do to their robots when adding extra armour or a particular set of forks/prongs to get under another robot? Am i missing something here?
Teams are allowed to modify as much as they like in the pits, but before they can enter the box, they need to undergo safety and technical inspections. It’s only after the inspections that modifications aren’t allowed. In Riptide/Shatter’s scenario, since Riptide had already passed its safety inspections, them seemly making modifications afterwards would be against the rules. The Official BattleBots rule book talks about this in section 5.6 if you’re interested in reading more, but the most relevant bits are: • “If an inspected Robot is subsequently modified in any way that could affect its safety, efficacy, operation or appearance, the Robot’s Team must request that the modification(s) be inspected and approved by a Safety/Tech Inspector.” • “If any BattleBots Official or Competitor has reason to believe that a Robot does not comply with any of the Rules, they can request that the Robot be re-weighed and/or re-inspected at any time except while the Robot is in the Arena competing in a Match.” Hope this helps!
You need free-spinning roller-bumpers to deal with a vertical spinning weapon like Riptide's that flips you more than chews you up. When contact is made, a lot of the energy from the weapon just spins your bumpers instead of being transferred to the main chassis.
That's a terrible idea. They would need to be extremely solid construction, which means a lot of weight, and precisely positioned/engineered to be effective. And they would be rendered ineffective with small amounts of damage or if the bot was at a slight angle etc.
Just outrange them. Riptide's main "innovation" is having wider but narrower spinners. If you're have a free-hinged longer ranged weapon, it'd do a lot to neutralise riptide's spinner.
1: when these things weigh a couple hundred pounds, a 2 pound weight reduction is not going to shift the results of the match in any meaningful degree especially when you see how effective it was during the fight. 2 pounds wouldn't have changed results 2: a random 2 pound difference very much could've been a scale error. it's electronic. if it was re-zeroed with some weight on it, could've skewed results. 3: if there was something genuinely wrong they would've caught it.
@@evgenynoschenko in addition to what he said, if we look at what the rule does, it quite clear, Bot have a max weight, modifying the bot after balance would allow you to bypass that limit, so it's not allowed, in this case the weight was lighter, it's still not allowed, but there's clearly no sign of trying to bypass the rule and since there's no proof of any modification, there's no need to dive further.
Technically within the rules. I don't like it. Shatter had zero shot against Riptide regardless …Riptide is the one bot most teams fear going up against. Hopefully we get to see another season which is hard to believe it hasn’t even been renewed yet.
If making modifications after weigh-ins is against the rules this should be a DQ for Riptide. I say this as a day 1 BB fan that is a fan of both teams.
There was no tangible proof of modifications done to the bot after the first weigh in. They weighed in 2 pounds lighter which is within the margin of error for the scale used, and also passed inspection multiple times without any modifications found. I don’t really know what else has to be said. They couldn’t of changed anything major in the tunnel before the area and the supposedly lost weight so it’s hard to see how this would change the out come of the fight.

This title helps nobody, this being the "fight of the week" helps nobody. You couldn't have just let CV and Madcatter be fight of the week and let the fans be happy, instead you've kicked a hornets nest and ran away to foam at the mouth at the mess and irritation you've caused. You're ruining the fans' enjoyment of the sport worse than the Riptide team ever has.
It's what give them a lot of engagement. Genuine fans don't make up the majority of the viewers sadly. Most people won't care that much about the robot combat community or the builders behind it so they are not affected by the harmful drama. The fight, itself, was actually pretty good but I prefer Claw Viper and MadCatter's close fight.
Tbh, I think they'll add a real Fight of the Week later on; They did this with RT vs Shred as well, before adding another vid that didn't have controversy attached.

When weighing your robot your safety mechanisms must be in place. At 0:25 you can see team Riptide removing the safety bar on the scale, resulting in a weight loss of probably two pounds (if I may guess wildly). Also: Taping stage props to your but is not considered as "modification" but rather as "decoration". Not shaking your oponent's hand however is very unsportsmanlike. Whatever you have to settle, you can do so after everything is over. But until then act like gentlemen, please!

I’m curious about what’s going to happen from here. If I were the other teams, I’d be keeping a close eye on anything that Riptide’s team does. If I knew they were making modifications to their bot after weigh-in, I’d be asking questions too. I love Battlebots because the teams are always there to have fun and are respectful of each other. Any team that puts that into jeopardy should be penalized.

It's apparent that relying on a hammer is futile. The most success comes when your opposition is tossed high in the air so that gravity becomes an additional weapon.
This was a top 32 fight - both are in because they won fights. Until this season, Shatter had a positive win record. Its also a previous tournament winner outside of battlebots.
Bite force isn’t in battle bots because it would dominate the field. I would like to see endgame vs BF. That would be epic. Bite would win. But it would be a battle for sure.
I feel like, unless he upgraded it, it wouldn’t do as well, especially after realizing quite a few of its wins were kinda luck (like when Huge split in half due to not having been fixed properly after its previous match). Modern Huge would destroy Bite Force, going off of how Huge was most definitely winning that past fight.
Riptide were being good sports. It was shatter who were being jerks. At the very least shake hands. Not shaking hands is a sign of disrespect and no one wants that.
theres nothing wrong with ensuring a fair fight, but even after riptide was cleared again shatter was still calling cheats. at first i was on shatters side with this, but their continuous mentality that riptide must be cheating even after they were cleared swayed me.
I think people said this about End Game's team as well, and tbh...I'm not sure if I noticed it compared to Ethan and Team Riptide. xD
And after all the RT controversy, I did some looking up of other "villains" as well, such as Ray and Jake, and if people saw them being kind out of battle, y'know what? That's good enough for me.
And if Ray himself mentioned the honor rule, where if one wants to avoid taking more damage, they can tell the other team and they'll back off - I'll take that as well. I've never seen BB fights in person (would love to, but alas, I can't afford it right now), but if I did, I'd much rather see EG, TS, or Hydra over freaking Riptide any time. Of course, I'd be there for SubZero or Ripperoni (or other faves of mine), but hey~ :P
"tease in a respectful way" lol no he don't Ray has zero sportsmanship and team Riptide are going down the same path

You hit the nail right on the head. (Pun intended)

What's the margin of error on that scale? A scale that weights objects weighing hundreds of pounds is probably not accurate up to one pound. Regardless of the reasons, the rules are there for a reason and they definitely did *something* to their bot - the fact that its weight changed absolutely proves that. Riptide is speed running the villain arc
(You can actually see the hammer in the shot at the beginning.)
BattleBots, of course, leapt at the opportunity to bolster Riptide's "villain" persona so viewers would root against them and, thus, keep watching the season in hopes of seeing them lose, so they omitted that critical detail. And the scale read only slightly differently because, as we all know, scales are not perfectly precise (although frankly, if making weight is an enforceable requirement, those scales should be accurate to at least a tenth of a pound).
That makes sense, I think they over reacted a tad. It is possible this was all made up by Battlebots for the reality TV side of things.
2 pounds different on a digital scale is not "slightly" different. 🤣
"as we all know, scales are not perfectly precise" - Correct, but there's a difference between accurate and consistent.
With the ability to control weapon speed via software, what is there to stop a team from breaking the weapon speed limit during the fight?

You would think that the telemetry from the controllers is not proprietary to just the team and that battlebots itself has access.

Also, not that it wouldn't be expensive as heck, but is there a rule stopping teams from filming their own footage?
Woah bro you really are sentimental eh😀😀

Riptide: F*** the haters 😂😂😂

It’s a 250lb weight limit correct? Wouldn’t it be a disadvantage to reduce weight in any way? That’s 2lbs of potential armor they aren’t using
A lighter bot could drive faster, that would be the advantage. Hypershock was 12lbs underweight for the Lucky match

The Official BattleBots rule book talks about this in section 5.6 if you’re interested in reading more, but the most relevant bits are:
• “If an inspected Robot is subsequently modified in any way that could affect its safety, efficacy, operation or appearance, the Robot’s Team must request that the modification(s) be inspected and approved by a Safety/Tech Inspector.”
• “If any BattleBots Official or Competitor has reason to believe that a Robot does not comply with any of the Rules, they can request that the Robot be re-weighed and/or re-inspected at any time except while the Robot is in the Arena competing in a Match.”
Hope this helps!
This is why I love Battle Bots. Always get a good healthy dose of electromechanical carnage.
Any theories to the bot having a different weight? I mean “0 evidence” is a pretty low amount of evidence for cheating 😵💫
what? if the weight is different the robot was 100% modified
1: when these things weigh a couple hundred pounds, a 2 pound weight reduction is not going to shift the results of the match in any meaningful degree especially when you see how effective it was during the fight. 2 pounds wouldn't have changed results
2: a random 2 pound difference very much could've been a scale error. it's electronic. if it was re-zeroed with some weight on it, could've skewed results.
3: if there was something genuinely wrong they would've caught it.
@@typhoon1575 its not about who wins or loses ,its about breaking the rules of the competition.
if they broke any rules, they would've been caught.
A 2 pound discrepancy is easily caused by a scale not properly zeroed
@@evgenynoschenko in addition to what he said, if we look at what the rule does, it quite clear, Bot have a max weight, modifying the bot after balance would allow you to bypass that limit, so it's not allowed, in this case the weight was lighter, it's still not allowed, but there's clearly no sign of trying to bypass the rule and since there's no proof of any modification, there's no need to dive further.
To borrow a phrase, the Duke Of Earl used to say that only one thing could stop him. "Nothing!"
Technically within the rules. I don't like it. Should be ZERO modification after weigh in.
5.6.4 Pre-Match Inspection

regulations.
Once the Pre-Match Inspection of a Robot starts, no changes are allowed to be made the Robot that

allowed.
He lost weight so i think it counted toward part removal which was said is allowed
I love this show!! I binged watch all the seasons on max. I need more! I love it!
If you take armor damage during the fights that you are unable to repair, does that count as a "modification after weigh in" ?
