They did on Valtteri Bottas in Bottas in 2013 but only on a few occasions during FP1 and it was during an installation lap. They should get those glasses that have a camera built into it.

To all the people complaining about mirrors and not being eye level - I play the f1 games in cockpit view and have never used the mirrors because they're no good. This is excellent, thanks for the footage.
Who gives a damn about the point of view being a bit higher then eye level....the man is going 270+ km/h in that weather on that track...

That did feel a little too high, but it was good to get somewhat of an idea of what the driver would be seeing.
Better than the Williams' version anyway - that one was way too low.

did you notice the different colors blue went on it was a turn and full colors was just full power very good

People complaining the lap is slow, have you even read the description! He is only looking through one eye. The camera is blocking one of his eyes.

mirrors on an f1 car are shit. they probably didnt even have them set up, this was alone
100% correct Lynkk. I drove formula cars professionally for years, when the engineers setup your driving position they want your head as low as possible to get you out of the air and to get your body mass as low as possible for better CG, you can barely see over the wheel. And I'm sorry Dick Dousche but the mirrors are absolutely used all the time, you need to know if you are clear before moving back over after overtaking. I would say the cam is on the helmet just over top the visor. Getting close though, if they ever do get real eye level cam, you will see just how confined your view point really is.
@@ianhenderson8032 , you are so right. In real life, the steering wheel is higher and you don't see the hood. Plus, in reality you're going to see the edges of your helmet visor.
regarder la f1 à la télé c'est une chose...être au volant en est une autre ...certainement beaucoup de monde ici a déjà eu la chance de sortir des stands a spa en condition mixte comme c'est le cas ici, avec une voiture performante, pour prendre l'eau rouge à fond au premier passage ...mise à pars dans grand tourismo et pc cars, c'est la sortie assurer ...mais bon, dans un jeu video on recommence ...

I believe this is eye level. Just the camera is probably placed outside of the helmet (in front of one his eyes) causing the reflections in the mirrors to be facing downwards.

On top of that, the track is clearly wet. Look at the moisture on camera..
It is eye level, but I feel like the view we see is much further forward. If you look at the mirrors, all we see is the asphalt, meaning it's either a high pov, or further forward pov.

I think it is proper to conclude that the camera is higher than eye level as the mirrors show the side pods not the correct rear view.

it's not the real driver POV, but it's very close. as copperkipper1 said, it's a few inches higher than eye level. Nico once said that you see the road ahead just above the steering wheel, and sometimes he even needed to stretch his neck to see more clearly.
PLUS, if it was the REAL driver POV, we should be seeing the road on the side mirrors, not the body of the f1.

For those saying this isn't eye level: The focal length of the lens has a lot to do with why you're not seeing the mirrors and such.

Well, we both have different ways of getting our information: I agree with what you said but, I was talking about the Super Sport (the black and orange one!) plus the Top Gear UK guys did test it, and James May got 500 kph of i, but then; the buggati test-driver got even more, I believe!
Anyways, it was a road car with 1000 horse power: a F1 car can't have that much power nor horse power or else it will simply break parts, which are very expensive (he sterring thing is over 500 euros....)

can't help you with the F1 cars, but the Buggati Veyron Supper Sport broke the 500 km/h barrier!
Plus, the track was wet and it was raining and that is why his to speed was only 280 km/h! pretty good on a wet track, though

And I think the time is damn fast considering he had ONE EYE CLOSED! and it was WET!

Great video! but I want to see a modified cam so the driver has 2 eyes to see on a balls to the walls dry hotlap. Still good lap in the rain with one eye

This looks so much faster than the traditional onboards - especially above 200kph.
For those who doesn't understand why F1 can't go more than 400km/h is because FIA have regulations which every year make them more difficult for the teams. Before some years F1 had V10 engine with 3L, now it's V8 with 2.4L and in two years the engines will be V6 with 1.6L + turbo. The point for F1 cars are not the top speed but the high speed corners and the fast accelerating and braking. Remember the F1 cars are the fastest cars on the planet for cornering. Also please read the description...
I hope that something similar, as far as driver's POV is concerned, will be introduced to F1 broadcasts sooner or later, because from now on usual on board cams on the top of a F1 car suck...

My question is this: have you ever driven an F1 car in real life? no? ...
A) Why on earth would a professional racing driver quoted as saying " I had to drive with only one eye open as the camera was blocking my other eye, quite tricky" lie about this being eye level. Y'all need to shut up and just admire the driving and the epicness that is F1.
B) Prove to me, with logical and complete physical evidence that this isn't eye level.
