  • Amid intense frontline combat, a soldier fighting for Russia under the Luhansk People's Republic found himself buried in a bunker and left to freeze to death by his Russian comrades.
After spending two and a half gruelling days trapped underground, not knowing if he would freeze to death, Ukrainian soldiers found and rescued Igor Mikhailovich Trofimenko, 49, and carried him away from constant shelling to safety.

Life on the Frontline series: • Life on the Frontline
"Those people [Ukrainian soldiers] we called fascists. They just dug me out at their own risk... Knowing full well they wouldn’t receive anything in return”. Prisoner of war, Mr Trofimenko said in an interview with Vans Without Borders (VWB). A British humanitarian group who deliver essential food and medical supplies to civilians living near the Ukrainian frontline.
Jack Ross is a volunteer aid worker who heads the charity. He and his team have braved countless dangers and travelled along bombed-out roads since March 2022.
They've bought relief to vulnerable people left to starve in the wake of Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
After nearly a year of touring Ukraine distributing aid, VWB has forged contacts within the Ukrainian army and in-country security intelligence, who grant them interviews with some of the most hard-to-reach people.
Mr Trofimenko was given medical assistance as soon as he was delivered to a Ukrainian base and gave consent to be interviewed.
The LPR prisoner claims he became disillusioned with fighting for the Russians long before his capture. Detailing an application to leave the frontline for health reasons, which was denied.
"Following mobilisation, they said we had to serve three months, then half a year and then until further notice." He said.

When I die, then bury me
      On a rolling plain.
Raise my barrow in the soil
      Of my dear Ukraine.
With the wheatfields and the cliffs
      Of a plunging shore
Where I can see them and can hear
      The booming Dnipro’s roar.
      When its seaward waters bear
      The invaders’ blood
From Ukraine, then I will leave
      Field and hill for good.
I will quit it all and fly
      Bursting up to God
And say prayers … but ‘til then

By looking at the hands I can tell that it's not frostbite. Frostbite is tissue necrosis that turns affected tissue black. He might be suffering from chilblains, a precursor or first-stage cold weather injury. What normally follows from prolonged wet and cold exposure is skin turning grey or blue, loss of feeling, and sometimes blistering. Continued exposure to wet and cold over time will cause the tissue cells to disrupt and die causing necrosis.

Ehhh, i mean, this man got under artillery barrage and literally was buried in the bunker. If there were russians around, they'd help him, but either all other russians on this position were dead or injured after artillery or he was like... alone on this position? Either way, it's just happened that simple ukrainian guys found him. It's not like he was thrown to die by russians deliberately as reporter was trying to paint it. Simple vietnamese PAVN soldiers during vietnam war also were "saving" americans after shelling them for hours and then dragging them into POW camps for miles. On the other hand, there were vietnamese guys who were executing american POW's in dozens... and in this war there were a lot of ukrainians who didn't have respect for every living creature, i saw too many evidences and videos that proove a point this man was trying to hint on when saying "those were two simple working ukrainian guys".
Not every ukrainian soldier is "a simple worker guy".

I live in a very warm country. One year I went to New Orleans for a holiday in winter and the room I stayed in the heating broke down. So there was no heating and the temperature dropped down to 0 degrees C. I had to sleep with many layers of clothing from my suitcase and I was still shivering all night long. Worst 3 nights I have ever experienced, and these people in Ukraine have to do this for weeks... so sad.
