My dad had just bought us a brand new color t.v. for Christmas and this was the first thing we watched on it. To this day, it's still my favorite game. I was 13.
The game that ripped my heart out. The pain persists to this day whenever I see game highlights. Brutal if you were Miami fan. Worse loss they ever suffered. Definitely worse than epic Chargers/Dolphins playoff game in 81.
I remember watching this game and to this day one of the greatest games I have ever seen. Miami was so close they dropped a pass that would have been a first down and keeping a drive alive and possibly leading to a Touchdown that would have gave them a two score lead in the fourth quarter. Instead they had to settle for a field goal only giving them a five point lead. Cliff Branch’s long Touchdown catch when he fell to the ground was a trap as the ball clearly hits the ground but no replay in those days to overturn it. Miami had Davis covered as good as you could have drew it up and Stabler was falling to the ground and just threw the ball up. Sometimes it just happens and on that day the Raiders just got the big plays when they needed them. Another thing is Miami scored too soon. They were in field position and I remember Griese saying during an interview years later when Malone scored, he said we scored too soon. They possibly could have used up another minute on the clock forcing Oakland to use their timeouts and settle for a field goal or possibly a touchdown by pounding it in but how do you tell a guy not to score when he is making a great run ? Just a great game all the way through.
Love the intro to this. I remember West Coast football in the 70’s and 80’s when California had four or five outdoor grass stadiums, and you couldn’t wait for the 4:00 ET games esp. from Oakland, Los Angeles, and later San Francisco.
I was 16 yrs old in 1974... watching this game on tv... wasn't a fan of either of these teams but recognized their greatness. To this day, I don't know how in hell Clarence Davis caught this ball (thrown by "The Snake")... one of the greatest games ever played!!
What do you think of Cliff Branch's supposed catch? 142:50. The ball never seems to bounce or move, but not sure how it's possible for it to be a clean catch that close to the turf with his forearms. Given the rules back then pretty sure it would have been overturned had there been replay. By todays rules if the ball doesn't move you can get away with trapping it.
Crazy how you managed to pull this off. iirc Steve Sabol recalled that the the last original film taping by NBC for this game was thought to have been lost in Mexico and only in Spanish. On top of that, the NFL Films footage was lost for nearly 35 years when they moved the company from Philadelphia to Mount Laurel, NJ and couldn't find it until 2007-08. I give you a round of applause.
Thanks for slowing the action down a bit. I usually have to do that on my own. Most old NFL games on video RUclips are slightly to fast. Not enjoyable.
Lost in the greatness of this game, was how poorly Griese played in the first half. He missed a number of passes, of wide open receivers down the field. Its so surprising considering how efficient Griese always was. Jake Scott's injury cost Miami big time in this game. There was no better center field safety in the game. And, when he went out, Snake and his corps of receivers really went to work.
Miami had they won would have had to go to Pittsburgh to play that games they couldn't automatically host and would have needed Buffalo to beat Pittsburgh to host
If Malone sits down in bounds at the 15, the Raiders have to use Timeout #1 at about 2:17 and it's 1st & 10. Dolphins run and Raiders use 2nd timeout at 2:07. Dolphins run again and reach 2:00 warning. If they get a 1st down, Miami runs click down to :03 and kicks a FG with 0:00 on the clock. If they don't get a 1st down on those three plays, Miami will have run the Raiders out of timeouts and attempting to take a one point lead leaving about 1:43 on the clock for Oakland but with no timeouts instead of all 3. Being that neither of Miami's starting CBs played that game, you would think Shula and Griese would be hellbent on eating up every second of that clock and all of the Raiders' TOs. Griese did say he almost told the guys in the huddle to not go into the end zone even if it's a cakewalk in; to fall down in bounds. The 1:43 scenario would be the same had Malone dropped at the 1 yard line. Outside the ten would have enabled the possibility of another first down, in which case the Raiders never see the ball again. Bad coaching by Shula and equal blame to Griese for not strategizing the winning formula. If Malone goes down at the 12 it ends up being a 29 yard chipshot. Barely a difference from an extra point for Garo. I heard how smart Shula and Griese both were my whole life but that was as dumb of football that has ever been played and they had two chances to get it right. I'd be embarrassed to this day if I was either of them. Miami was pushing their D around at that point and getting two more 1st downs, winding the clock down to all zeroes looked like a pretty sure bet. Yeah, embarrassing stupidity sank the reigning back to back world champions. As it turned out, it took the Raiders 1:43 to go down and get the winning TD but they had all three TOs instead of 0. Shameful really.
Miami should have won that game , We scored first , we led at halftime , we led after 3 Qts , We blew the Biggest game since Super Bowl 6 and Subsequently ended our 5 yr run at the Top .
I was 6 years old about to turn 7. The week before the Raiders played the Cowboys on Monday (Saturday) night football. Oakland won but I can’t remember the final score but I do remember George Blanda coming off the bench and on his first play throwing a TD pass to Cliff Branch. Was the final 23-16 or maybe it was 28-23? I can’t remember I’m getting old but I’m thinking 28-23 Raiders
If Benny Malone doesn’t score Miami kicks the game winning FG or do they. Oakland would have gotten the ball back with no timeouts left. I take it all back … Blanda would have kicked a 60 yd FG to beat Miami 24-22.
Magnificent job on this project, they ain’t easy to do, having tried my hand at a few much more modest productions! Was the TV audio something you recorded? If not any, any interesting backstory on its discovery? I’m hopeful that a full broadcast copy of this game may eventually emerge, the guy Rick from obsolete video services is constantly unearthing video from the 1970s
I should have put in the description that I did not produce or create this video. Got this from a collector years ago. No idea who actually created it, but they did an excellent job.
The Raiders would lose to The Steelers at home in the AFC Championship game the following week, they would have to wait 2 more years before they win SB IX
Manny Fernandez was a very good football player for the Dolphins. But I get you that what he did to that young man was uncalled for. Showed unprofessionalism and lack of character (both on the late hit to Clarence Davis when he caught the winning touchdown and the unnecessary cheap elbow shot to the face of the fan after the game).
Pure luck helped this Oakland team. 74' Raiders not that good truthfully. Not only do they benefit from the 3 injured Dolphins ( Curtis Johnsons , Mike Kolen and Jake Scott on this play ( replacements Henry Stuckey 48, Charlie Babb # 49 and Larry Ball #51) but the ball is clearly on the ground.. Hey, dont get mad at me just look at this and following picture 1:44:18
I disagree with this game being called or labeled Super Bowl 8 1/2 because the winner did not go to Super Bowl 9, they lost the next week to Pittsburgh, your team needed to go up to Pittsburgh and beat the Steelers in my opinion then this game as great as it was could legitimately be called Super Bowl 81/2 😮
My dad had just bought us a brand new color t.v. for Christmas and this was the first thing we watched on it. To this day, it's still my favorite game. I was 13.
I was 8 watching on our first color TV and we went crazy
it's still one of my games too
With all the technology today NBC intro from back in the 1970s still can't be beat.
Amen brother ! ! That's exactly what I was thinking. Hell I could go back & watch that for 30min.
I listened to it 3 times before I watched the game. 👍
To me, as a Raiders fan, (in those days, anyway), this was the greatest NFL game of all-time.😊
The game that ripped my heart out. The pain persists to this day whenever I see game highlights. Brutal if you were Miami fan. Worse loss they ever suffered. Definitely worse than epic Chargers/Dolphins playoff game in 81.
I could watch this over and over
Loved the 70’s Raiders. Still a fan. Just win baby!
Last 5 minutes of this game were EPIC!
How could NBC lose the greatest football game ever played?
Someone has it, I guarantee you!
@@georgeanthony7282 I hope that you are correct 👍

I have been looking for a recording of this game for years! Wish all of the game were available, but this is pretty good too.
I loved AFC football in the 70's. Raiders,Dolphins,Steelers were some of the greatest teams of all time
Sea-of-Hands is the Greatest catch in history, with all due respect to David Tyree.

I was at this game and could not stop passing gas but did not care that folks around me were pissed - I had to pass gas
That's a really cool story.
this is the first NFL game that i watched. 9 years old in 1974
1:57:29 Sea of Hands
The Raiders fans did not storm the field the next week! The Pittsburgh Steelers were all over the field winning the AFC Championship!
Crazy how you managed to pull this off.

When football was not fake !!!!!!!🌴😎🐬🏈
This is great so far.! 👌
As a life long Dolphins fan,the Raiders are the first team I Developed Hate for.
Today those feelings remain.😂Finsup!
Curt Gowdy on the call

This is unreal
