Fascinating how he gets stronger and faster as the race heads to the clubhouse turn and down the stretch!

I was 16 yrs old in 1974... watching this game on tv... wasn't a fan of either of these teams but recognized their greatness. To this day, I don't know how in hell Clarence Davis caught this ball (thrown by "The Snake")... one of the greatest games ever played!!

Love the intro to this. I remember West Coast football in the 70’s and 80’s when California had four or five outdoor grass stadiums, and you couldn’t wait for the 4:00 ET games esp. from Oakland, Los Angeles, and later San Francisco.

I love watching this precious footage of the beautiful Secretariat. I enjoy everything but animal abuse is my biggest upsetment. I don't think it's right to whip the horses while running. It so upsets me. If they just leave these creatures of beauty alone, they will perform the best they can. Why is this practice allowed? I don't know much about the sport, but I heard Ron Turcotte say he whipped him. Sham was also whipped to hell at the Belmont Stakes. I think it should be outlawed. Doing that will make them afraid in my opinion. Do they still allow that today???? It's terrible.

I was there that day. Unfortunately I was in the hotel answering a bomb scare that was called in. I was a firefighter at the time and was in the building evacuating and checking rooms when the race was being run. I never got to see Secretariat but I remember that crowd and traffic was tremendous.

The Raiders would lose to The Steelers at home in the AFC Championship game the following week, they would have to wait 2 more years before they win SB IX

Secretariat got off to a poor start, but while that might have cost him a shot at the track record, it didn’t make a difference as far as winning this race. My Gallant and Our Native are both solid racehorses, but they’re clearly not in Secretariat’s class. The only things that I was curious about in this race was who was going to finish second and how much Secretariat was going to win by. I was mildly surprised that My Gallant beat Our Native. He race a very solid race.

If Malone sits down in bounds at the 15, the Raiders have to use Timeout #1 at about 2:17 and it's 1st & 10. Dolphins run and Raiders use 2nd timeout at 2:07. Dolphins run again and reach 2:00 warning. If they get a 1st down, Miami runs click down to :03 and kicks a FG with 0:00 on the clock. If they don't get a 1st down on those three plays, Miami will have run the Raiders out of timeouts and attempting to take a one point lead leaving about 1:43 on the clock for Oakland but with no timeouts instead of all 3. Being that neither of Miami's starting CBs played that game, you would think Shula and Griese would be hellbent on eating up every second of that clock and all of the Raiders' TOs. Griese did say he almost told the guys in the huddle to not go into the end zone even if it's a cakewalk in; to fall down in bounds. The 1:43 scenario would be the same had Malone dropped at the 1 yard line. Outside the ten would have enabled the possibility of another first down, in which case the Raiders never see the ball again. Bad coaching by Shula and equal blame to Griese for not strategizing the winning formula. If Malone goes down at the 12 it ends up being a 29 yard chipshot. Barely a difference from an extra point for Garo. I heard how smart Shula and Griese both were my whole life but that was as dumb of football that has ever been played and they had two chances to get it right. I'd be embarrassed to this day if I was either of them. Miami was pushing their D around at that point and getting two more 1st downs, winding the clock down to all zeroes looked like a pretty sure bet. Yeah, embarrassing stupidity sank the reigning back to back world champions. As it turned out, it took the Raiders 1:43 to go down and get the winning TD but they had all three TOs instead of 0. Shameful really.

Lost in the greatness of this game, was how poorly Griese played in the first half. He missed a number of passes, of wide open receivers down the field. Its so surprising considering how efficient Griese always was. Jake Scott's injury cost Miami big time in this game. There was no better center field safety in the game. And, when he went out, Snake and his corps of receivers really went to work.

As a Kentuckian, being 12 years old at the time, the memories of the Kentucky derby. It was unbelievably specical to be at my grandmothers home. 2 blocks down from the horse barns, my Aunt Beulah parking cars for grandmas Christmas money. We all were thunderstruck by the big red horse. Because of him we gathered for the next two races. It was a hard time financially and this horse brought hope and magic to our lifes when we needed it. I'm not much at stats or equine history but if I could see a race, I'd like to see Man O War matched up with big red. Secretariat will always be the magic from the Kentucky Derby of my youth.
