Why is Hilleberg Enan better than Durston X Mid?

- Why the Duston X Mid 1p solid inner fails to match the Hilleberg Enan especially for me as a right sided leaner in camp and set up for wild camping. I know they say four pegs only needed but in reality you need most if not all the 14 for a good pitch unless it is very calm conditions for a tight pitch.

I have always loved Hilleberg Tent. ❤
as an xmid 1p owner from scotland (just completed the west highland way solo with it), I wanted to point out some things:
- it's (imo) the fastest and easiest tents to erect (important for many)
- the inner is a parallelogram shape
- the tent has 2 vestibules which are the same size
- roll the door tight from the bottom and it will hold in place
- use the doors, when erecting the tent, to put the poles in - its easier
- i've never had trouble attaching the inner to the pole on the ground
- since it's going to light weight, the space is smaller, but i sit up when i cook also and can still stay covered in a quilt (however, you seem to have the same gripe with the Hilleburg so i'm not sure thats a mark off the xmid tbh)
- you can use a stick or another pole to turn the door into an awening type cover for a bit more space and shelter (check Dan's pitching video).
- you can roll back almost all of the flysheet with actually removing the fly to gaze at stars (check Dan's pitching video).
- with walking pole tents, some may like the pole being out of the way of the door, where as you seem to prefer to have a pole to be placed to cook better. - which is also fine (perhaps dan should offer a mirror image of the current tent he makes which would at least adress that particualr issue)
- i would think of the inner as more like a ultralight bivvy instead of an expected palace (after all it is a trekking pole tent without any little extra poles to give more head and foot room)
- with skill, you can do a "skinny pitch" on the xmis (check Dan's pitching video)
- i'm not worried about ventalation at all when i have doors wide open.
- main bugbear is if one corner stake comes out with no other support then your tent falls down but i dont muck around with crappy short pegs for that to happen.
In the winter i remove the inner and use a polycro groundsheet a 2gosystems bivvy bag so I have more space. i've also modified the 4 corner seams with 2 tie out points each to for more stability/structure in the wind (also to stop corner ground peg tent structure failure). The xmid is light so you have trade-offs. I do want a hilleburg solo though lol

I have a xmid 1 which i love and a Hilleberg Niak which is truly amazing but I wouldn’t compare the two they are very different designs for different situations.
Durston make the most amazing backpack also Kakwa 55
I find I can get a bit more head room in the Enan by twisting the inner tent togle loops to shorten them under the centre pole. Makes the inner tight like a drum.
Is that to make inner marginally narrower and therefore higher
@@TonyHobbs no it just pulls the inner up closer to the centre pole. Seems to me that there's enough clearance between inner and fly to sacrifice a bit for the extra headroom.
I have the xmid. Love it more than I thought I would. Can’t believe you don’t use tent pockets, give it a try it’ll change your life. Haha. Good comparison video Tony. Enjoyed watching.

I will keep my solomid XL Tony , since I went over to DCF I don’t get the rain sag like I would occasionally get using the silnylon duomid . I would lean to the hilly over the durston but I have neither 😂 hope your well atb Dave

I have both the Dyneema and Sil Poly X-Mids and I have an Enan. The footprint is quite large on the X-Mid as several have said, so the Enan is going to fit in more places. It is also lower and stealthier. However, from my experience, the Enan is much less comfortable and is more claustrophobic than the X-Mid. I’m 5’9” and can’t fully sit up in the Enan - my head brushes on the roof of the inner. Getting changed and getting in and out of a sleeping bag is also more constricted in the Enan. I don’t understand Tony’s criticism of the porches in the X-Mid, as there is lots of room to store your pack, boots and other clutter out of the way. Incidentally, I’ve had full-coverage footprints made for my X-Mids, so stuff in the vestibules isn’t on wet grass. Cooking while lying on your side isn’t something most people tend to do, is it?
Are you UK Based? I think in UK we cook in porches a lot. Did you see my Video with Chris Townsend and his views on this? I agree the Enan is lower and a tall person might struggle more. Did you watch my videos with Enan in Wales a few months ago? It is fine too live in I lived in it quite happy for a few days in the Brecons. I find as I described the porch far superior than X Mid. I'm sure Dan will be along as It would be great to configure it for more porch space.... It's dead space in my view, the only covered porch space is that bit behind the pole which yes is reasonable sized but not as big as Enan and you can't really get to it easily. Yes I have seen some sit with feet out and cook in that area but it's awkward and if raining you need to cook in porch. As I mention there is space but open door and the porch is now outside ... agreed the other side is under cover it's just awkward for me. As stated I'm trying to like it and get to grips with it, check back for a X Mid vs Trailstar soon hopefully and a X Mid goes to Dartmoor for three nights soon... thank you for comment
@@TonyHobbsThanks for your prompt and detailed reply Tony. Yes, I am UK based, from Cheshire, so fortunate to have the Peak District, Lakes and Snowdonia within practical reach. I’ll have a look at your Enan camp in the Brecons. I do cook inside, but tend to sit or kneel. As you say in your review, it’s all down to personal preference at the end of the day. By the way, have you tried the Nallo 2? Overall it’s my favourite tent. Relatively heavy i.e. Soulo weight, but with far more room for 1 than the Soulo and a highly practical vestible straight in front of the bedroom. With the option of double poleing it’s always going to be strong enough. Going back to the X-Mid, Dan Durston in one of his videos shows how you should tension each corner after pegging out your rectangle shape i.e. before ‘raising’ the tent on the poles. I’ve started doing it and it gives a very good pitch. All the best.
I'll try tomorrow to tighten the x mid when flat then raise pole when I pitch no pun it against trailstar ;)

Both great shelters to be honest, both have good features, I’ve got the xmid, but I don’t think it’s a worse shelter than say my hilleberg soulo or WC helm, just different tents for different scenarios, my wife has the akto, very similar to the enan, a would agree that its got a better usuable porch when zipped up than the xmid, but I do like that I can have my gear/boots in one porch and food/cooking in the other side on the xmid, Can’t wait to try out my Trailstar when it arrives 😀👍enjoyed your comparison between the two Tony, look forward to the next one, atb Mick 👍

Bit of a tangent to this video, but what is your opinion of Oookworks inners - worth purchasing for a tarp? I read some unfavourable reviews of the company and noticed their products featured in some of your videos…
I have a double silnylon groundsheet plus a DCF groundsheet for trailstar plus a dog groundsheet. I have had it all over 10 years. Yes it's good but the original guy I believe sold so I've no idea on current status. When he was working there were huge waiting times like many many many months often having paid upfront. After two years two inners I ordered still hadn't arrived and I had to request a refund

Thanks for comparing. I’ve had my share of shelters over the years and have owned some of the popular light weight ones - trailstar - duomid - scarp - duplex. I find it difficult to get enthusiastic about another new lightweight tent and nowadays prefer to take a Hilleberg and soak up a little extra weight. The extra weight is often not much more than a bottle of water for a one person. I don’t need to worry about breaking a walking pole (which has happened), and I get a very durable and weather-worthy shelter. I saw a Durston 1p and was surprised at the size of the footprint. I’m sure it’s a good option but it’s just not attractive enough for me to spend more money and depart from what I already have. If someone said would you like to swap your Akto or Niak for my Xmid, my answer would be no thanks.
Great comment thank you yes I agree it just misses the mark for me. As you may know I have the Trasilstar the Duomid the DMXL and Scarp plus others too, all are much much better for me than X Mid - and I'll pit one or two more vs it in time, whilst my friend allows me use of X Mid then maybe an inter rivalry of my stuff...
I have all of them and would say the opposit. I don't really feel like theres a point to using my hilleberg tents anymore, my Durston can handle everything. Just did the hole PCT this year thrue 3 climate zones in the worst snow year in its history. I did 40% of the trail with a country man that used the Hilleberg Ena on the PCT. So I saw the difference between our tents on trail aswell. Both he and me would choose the Durston after that experiance. Im from sweden and Ive used the Hilleberg tents for 35 years and have 5 of them. Im a winter survival instructor in the Swedish armed forces and have used the Hilleberg tents professionella in extrem winter for example aswell... but... I have 2 Durston tents right know, one Dyneema one silpoly and thats all I need for 4 season.
Yes, use your stuff you have. But don't talk about a product that you never used and say that you wouldent choose it. The Durston are very different from the zpack tents like the duplex and other Dyneema tents. The Durston are the first real 4 season Dyneema tent for example.
(Yes, the black lable hilleberg would be stronger in the most extreme weather. But no hobby hiker goes out in that typ of wearher, you don't need that ability. The durston are very strong and strong enough)
@@SigfridSWE Nice. Congratulations on your rank and achievements and glad to hear it works well for you. I’m not a survival instructor in the army and I haven’t done the PCT. If I were, and I had, then it’s possible I might agree with you. However, I’m afraid following order is not my strong suit. I am entitled to voice my opinion (as you are to yours), which is that I’m sure the xmid’s a good option (there are lots of glowing reviews out there) but that it’s not attractive enough for me to part with more money when I already have good options that I like and enjoy using.
Sometimes it almost feels like enan has better ventilation than x-mid. Both are quite drippy.
In certain conditions anything can be . I found enam fine on two or three camps I've used it in tbf one was very very hot lol but others very very wet and no issues. Thanks for watching 👀 🙂
instead of repegging the corners of X-Mid after you already inserted the poles, make sure to have all the sides of the rectangle drum tight before you insert the poles. then it will erect in a perfectly tight pitch that’s solid against the wind and not have the flapping on the sides that you can see in your video

I love watching Lassie's expression while you're talking..I'm sure She's thinking."What the hell's he going on about now!"...I find your videos very entertaining and I have a good chuckle watching them. I haven't got either of these tents but my vote would be for the Enan. I had a Luxe Hexpeak walking pole tent, which I suppose is the same genre as the Durston and I just found it too fiddly to put up..I couldn't relax as I was always fiddling about trying to get it better and then the inner would be touching the outer..drove me nuts. I do have the Enan's big brother, the Anjan, which is so simple. 2 poles and minimum 4 pegs or 8, with the guys, and its a lovely sturdy pitch and tons of room; and I think you could brew up easily whether you're left or right handed!
Thanks for great comment Tim they great fun to make and share. As you probably know I have loads of MLD stuff which is maybe similar to Hexpeak? I get what you mean they can be fiddly on occasion vs a tent.. So from that point I'd agree. It's the space inside and around you I like with my MLD stuff or indeed the Enan. I hope to get hold of a Nammatj 2 soon ish to try that seems a really nice tent, different weight though. Lassie says woof Lizzy says bark... it's a bit chilly for her to stand around I think at mo and mum on Lizzy duties whilst she able lol
does the Enan absorb a lot of water and sag? and does it become heavier when packed up after a wet night? I never had to worry about that in an X-Mid because silpoly doesn't absord water so I never once had to step out of my warm sleeping bag at night to tighten the guylines, and it doesn't become a burden to carry a wet rainfly.
In 12 years of camping with silnylon I have never once got out to tension my tent. The only time it was a real problem was the silnylon MLD supermid that thing is so huge it draped in the morning once and I got a DCF version .... I don't really get the weight argument as all tents even poly you'll not shake all drops off and it its raining when pack it away rain will get into packing if that makes sense so yes you might save a bit but not a huge amount. I have a few poly shelters - check back for more vids.... I think the shelter not the material in the think I'll weigh it up on. Great comment thought thanks
I’m a Duomid & Trailstar man but have borrowed my Dads X-Mid 2P Solid Inner a couple of times. I really enjoyed using it but definitely didn’t love it and I much Prefer my Duomid any day of the week.
I must admit, I don’t like the look of the Ennan as I like to be able to sit up cross legged and I suspect the Ennan wouldn’t allow me to do that.

Yes enan not very high. I was never able to sit cross legged my legs not bendy lol I'll admit but shhhh the x mid growing on me it's OK for what is but absolutely no trailstar or duomid.
I've got four Hilleberg tents including the Enan which I've had since 2017. I've also got the Durston X-mid-Pro 1. I like both tents but have to make a few comments on your video. You cerrainly need a refresher on how to properly set up the Enan seeing how it is not at all how Hilleberg's instructions suggest it. I find the setup of the X-mid to be really nice and easy on level ground but extremely annoying if one of the corners is not level, requiring multiple re-adjustments and finding a perfect pitch near impossible then. The light weight of the pro version is less than 500 grams, which is amazing, but the volume is quite large for it's size. That is no bother when hiking but when cycling, which is my preffered way to travel, it is a bit of a factor. What I hate about the hilleberg are the two end poles, which I never take out as you do, and it makes packing a bit more difficult that I like. I value being able to stuff a tent rather than roll it up. So both tents are very good bits of kit, but in the end if I could only have one tent ... well I could never stand such a situation. ;) Oh, I have short six inch leghts of zing-it line with tarp flys (from duthcware) attached for the four corner tie outs to handle the problem you mentioned. It just makes set up quick and easy, with no guesswork as to where to put the stakes.
Which part is incorrect in Enan set up? It's difficult to do wrong.... four pegs front back plus two more on front back lines plus two pegs on side lines. Not sure what complicated or can get wrong?
I think hope I made it clear I don't usually *indeed never have until then to demonstrate its possible. They quite short so fit across top of pack or even better my usual preference is outside front pocket for immediate ease of access.
I always take or try to remember to take spare lines just a few bits and can use for corners or corner if needed which it was in Wales last year. Your plan sounds wise. Thanks for watching and posting comment
@@TonyHobbs As hilleberg shows it the small difference is that one end should have the corners staked and the end guyed out - then the pole goes in and gets snugged in via the adjustable loop, and then finaly the other end gets the corners and guyline in. the two side guyouts are optional but highly recomended. Putting the pole into a loose, not fully pegged out tent is a fair bit easier - but of course personal prefferences are always legit as always.
@1DrBar ah OK so I wasn't wrong just different order to hilleberg? I think a few have mentioned this and it's an interesting topic as sometimes I prefer my way as that's my usual.... I never really thought if pegging one end then poles then pegging out other end ... I have done it on calm days recently but I feel when windy securing front too is helpful (?) Thanks for reply 😊
Watching your chat with chris made me rethink about buying a xmid as the 2 big issues with its pitching size and being too exposed when the doors are open and rain coming in, not ideal for uk imo
I'd agree. But it seems popular in uk ....maybe we missing something... I don't think so I think it's very hyped and some people might just get it as its all over RUclips everyone saying how fab it is when there are alternatives.... or it's not necessarily the best option for people. Dan has done a fab job and I take nothing away from that he has my respect but too many say how brilliant it is when I feel its lacking and better someone just stands up and says think before you buy and if it's for you great but don't necessarily follow the herd lol hats off to Dan though and hopefully he enjoys vid 😀 it's vs trailstar tomorrow.... when I head out for a day and next week I'll take it for three nights on dartmoor and let's see what it's like there . @TonyHobbs this is because you cam change vestibules for cooking so no matter what way the wind is blowing you will get protection from it as they face the opposite way to each other. Not many other tents give you this protection.
Of course, the x-mid pro 1 is way lighter than either of these. The pro 2 might even be lighter, with way more room.
Had to give up half way through the video. Painful. You've set it up wrong and don't seem to know the first thing about it.
Which and how and watch next and we can’t all be experts and surely it can’t be origami for average user ?
@TonyHobbs set up too loose to start with. Didn't put the pole handles in thr bungee loops at the bottom and then said not sure why Dan thinks it'll give you more space if you move the poles. Because it pulls the inner out with it! Rolling the door up is the most basic thing you can do. Roll tightly from the bottom up and it will hold the whole thing in. You rolled it from high up so it will never work like that. I stopped after that point so not sure what else you did wrong but it looked awful from your set up. Making it look like it's a difficult tent to set up and now saying it's origami. Really not that hard for anyone to do.

My concern is the magnetic tie back slipping and door landing on stove and yes watch my follow up trip there is space but its limited unless perform bone bending things or feet out door.

btw - I don't use the magnetic clips - I fixed a small bit of bungie cord on both doors with a draw string toggle that goes through the fly tie out point . works a treat
Hi Hayden, yes they are "big" Collie swallowing porches behind the poles but it is dead space there, it is ok for chucking stuff like packs boots dogs etc but you can't do anything in them unless you angle your body awkwardly. Esp for me I can't cook or actively make use of it. What my next few vids where I take it camping. As explained here I need to cook in the narrow bit which actually worked ok due to grass but could be tricky if terrain less friendly. It was an acceptable experience the trip using it for three nights. I prefer porch space all in one generally as discussed in the video plus in TS video that followed this one. I'm not really a Hilleberg die hard fan more yes they make good tents but I'm definitely a Mountain Laurel Designs MLD fan lol and not really a huge fan of x mid... its OK but others offer options some people might be interested in

How do you loose your ventilation when you open the doors in the X-mid?
Well tbf I do correct myself in video as yes you’re correct the door is now the vent but you lose what you had it other shelters the vent is separate from the door so opening the door gives extra venting….
